Looks: Luka can easily be mistaken for a girl, which is exactly how he likes it. He looks young, with a short stature and round face, and dresses in a feminine way. He has chin-length blond hair that he doesn’t bother to keep out of his eyes, and a distinct fashion sense. He is fond of bright or pastel colors and plentiful accessories, and can easily be picked out of a crowd based on his flamboyant attire. A frequent cause of frustration for him is his young appearance; most people meeting him just don’t believe he’s over eighteen. His high voice doesn’t help things. Basically, imagine three chipmunks standing on each others’ shoulders under a trench coat desperately trying to convince you they’re a real adult human. He has a nice
singing voice, at least.
Personality: Luka comes off as a very friendly, if strange, person. A lot of the time, he seems to be off in his own world, and in conversation his mind can go weird places. Despite being spacey and sometimes inscrutable, he’s easy to talk to and fun to be around. He’s the kind of person who would start singing out of nowhere just because he felt like it. He has a strange sense of humor, finding comedy in the absurd and slightly scary (He once imagined a horse race in which none of the horses had legs and couldn’t stop laughing for, like, an hour).
While he seems unapologetically unique to an outside observer, Luka actually hides plenty of anxiety and insecurity. He tries his best to be confident in who he is, but he’s used to feeling ashamed of himself. His way of dealing with these feelings isn’t a particularly healthy one: He ignores them, and on occasion copes using hallucinogens. He’s honestly kind of a mess, but he tries.
History: Milo and Eliza Young had very nearly built a perfect life. Milo worked in an office and made enough money for both of them, and Eliza stayed home and took care of the kids, Violet and Luka. They lived in a good neighborhood, the kids got along well, and they were the envy of their peers. The only thing that wasn’t exactly as they imagined was their son.
Luka was always different than the other boys. He was in his own little world, more at home listening to music than playing outside. He seemed to prefer clothing and toys meant for girls, and even willingly played dress-up with his older sister. His parents expected him to grow out of it in a few years, but he didn’t. He caught plenty of criticism from parents and peers both, but Violet always supported him. She told him that when someone doesn’t like who you are, just keep being yourself, if just to make them angry.
In high school, most of Luka’s classmates stopped caring about his style, and while he stayed his spacey self, he was friendly enough to have a positive reputation around school. He stayed close with his sister; in fact, when he realized he was attracted to boys, she was the first person he told (plus, she agreed to never tell their parents). Whenever Mom and Dad gave Luka shit about his clothes or mannerisms, Violet always came to his defense. Things changed, though, when Luka was 17 and Violet moved out to live on her own.
Without his sister around, Luka was subjected to the full force of his parents’ expectations. They got in arguments almost every night, and Luka rebelled even more. He fell in with a group of friends that his parents didn’t approve of. His new friends were known stoners, and he started smoking as well, finding that it gave him inspiration for his writing. The group often met at a relatively unknown campsite in the woods where they would sit around the fire and get high together. After they all graduated high school, their meetings became more frequent, but so did Luka’s fights with his parents. After a particularly harsh argument left him in a rotten mood, he left to meet his friends again, hoping to cheer himself up. Things were different this time, though. One of them had gotten their hands on some shrooms.
Luka had read up on the effects of Psylocibin mushrooms and had wanted to try them at least once in his life. He was interested in experiencing the creativity and visions that came with them, so he gladly accepted. While waiting for the drug to kick in, one of his friends made a joking comment about his feminine clothing. Normally, he would have laughed and followed it up with a jab of his own, but he was still on edge from fighting with his parents, so he reacted defensively. This lead to an argument, and Luka got up and walked away in no direction in particular.
As he got farther away from his worried friends, he felt electricity under his skin. His friends’ cries of his name started to warp in his perception until they stopped sounding like speech at all. He could almost feel the life around him, the trees seemed to be breathing, and the fireflies started splitting in two and filling the air. He saw colors more beautiful than anything he had ever seen before, and soon enough, his bad mood had entirely washed away. He had no idea where he was, and he didn’t care. He wished everyone could experience this. The world would be a much better place.
While he was distracted by the visions, Luka slipped on some wet leaves and fell. He slid down a hill, disoriented, and his hallucinations turned more sinister. He could have sworn that the pattern of the fireflies rushing past him looked like faces looking right at him. The next thing he felt was cold, and wet. He remembered the stream he had fallen into, but as his body was submerged, he couldn’t remember it ever being deeper than his ankles. Panicking, he let out a breath and the bubbles that burst from his mouth led him to the surface.
When he climbed back onto the shore, he felt different. He no longer felt the electric charge in his body, and he was much more mentally present. He didn’t feel high anymore, but what he saw didn’t make any sense. He swam through a four-inch deep stream and came out completely dry, in an unfamiliar place.
It was like a dream world, except he was sure he was awake.
