Okay I'm steady working on the RP and I think I'll kick the Aberrant connection as a thing and use it as a metric for power; we don't use dice so the use of such mechanics would be useless

I have been a part of a game or two where dice rolling was a part of the mechanics, however all of the RNG was handled by the GM, for the sake of consistency and neutrality. He made it fairly simple on himself I believe. Also helped to make things more fluid, and like most PbP gaming, rather than devolving situations that called for it into short, brief, one line encounters.
Other games have just done as you are doing, using a set of rules as a framework, and comparison aid more than anything.

With no Attunement, a character who bursts into flame is going to burn away anything he's wearing at the time. Backing This is your standing in some organization, such as the military, or police. higher ratings indicate a great deal of power and respect in that organization. Cipher This is how well hidden you are when you want to be. With this background, you are a difficult person to track down. You leave no paper trail, there are no photographs taken. Investigators come up empty-handed. Contacts For each point in this background you have 1 major contact you can go to for information. In addition, this background also represents a general pool of lesser contacts to who you can reach out. Dormancy Using this trait allows a Gamma to "dorm down", turning all his/her powers off.
