The company’s headquarters, more commonly known as Evolab Biotechnology Campus, was a sprawling two-hectare property within the Industrial District of New Florence. It was home to the brain of the company’s operations in Europe and the Americas. The technologies it introduced to the post-war rebuilding helped civilizations thrive in lands devastated by humanity after it turned on biological warfare as means to annihilate enemy’s resources. At present, Evolab was a major supplier of medical devices and animal health products, but it was its contribution to the pharmaceutical industry that made it into the giant it was.

The Campus boasted cutting edge technologies used for advanced research and development, best in class manufacturing facilities, and fully automated unmanned distribution warehouses. It showcased the organization’s commitment to seek new technology for the advancement of the industry and the betterment of the quality of human lives. A tour of these areas was organized by the event staff as part of the agenda that afternoon. Much like the noble houses of New Rome, companies like Evolab enjoyed showcasing its wealth to people who mattered. That afternoon it was the major stakeholders, investors, and distinguished guests.

Being an influential future leader, Luke was both an investor and a distinguished guest. He owned shares of the company within the allowable figures, not enough to put him on the board of directors. Besides, neither he nor any member of his immediate family was legally permitted to hold any position in a company, unless it was partly owned by the kingdom. In such cases, dividends and profits would not go into his account but instead into the kingdom’s treasury.

“Welcome to Evolab, your royal highness,” was the polite greeting of a blonde woman who appeared to be in her twenties just as he and two other uniformed men were ushered into the function hall. “My name is Merissa. Please follow me to your table.”

Unlike the straightforward businesslike impression of the lobby, hallways, and offices, the venue had subdued blue lighting and lounge music that suggested a sophistication indicative of a nobleman’s lucrative lifestyle. At the far end of the room was a stage with a massive screen as its backdrop. It presently showed muted footage about the company’s work, its happy employees, and its commitment to preserve the environment, among other things.

Luke politely declined the offer of assistance to find his seat. It was not his first time to attend such an event and usually he was seated with the highest ranked officers of the corporation. Besides, he just received a very brief message from Tobias, which had surprisingly made him feel a little relieved that he would not be playing the charming politician alone that afternoon. He had spotted familiar faces among the crowd, which included titled lords and ladies such as his uncle, businessmen, and more importantly the ambassador from the far east.

All the more reason to turn his back to the polite usher and exit the hall. His decision to invite Rhiane might have been more beneficial than he thought. Two of his bodyguards, also dressed for the occasion, exchanged glances, but didn’t say a word. They followed him out and into the exit, ignoring the other sharply dressed guests as they politely greeted their crown prince. Luke nodded in acknowledgement, a purely instinctual gesture that he never even needed to think about.
The automatic sliding doors of the main entrance opened for the small party of men. Luke took off his sunglasses when he entered the building earlier, regretted not putting it back on as the warm afternoon glow filled hilled his vision faster than his eyes could adjust. Then again, the brightness did help him find her. It wasn’t difficult. She stood out from the crowd of reporters and other newly arrived guests. The low angle of the sun in the horizon emitted the perfect wavelength that inspired her skin to glow. He noticed it the day before at the beach and had to force himself to look away. She wore an ensemble that was not something revolutionary, but she wore it so well that it felt like it was the first time he was seeing it on a woman. It wouldn’t be surprising if pencil skirts would be popular, especially in court, in the coming days.

Men and women from the media parted like the red sea as the other royal guards joined the two that was with Luke to form a protective barrier around the man. All of them led to the princess elect, who was saying something to one of the last oblivious reporters. Tobias was a tall and imposing figure by her side. Luke paid him no mind, though.

“I’ll take it from here. Thank you, Dark Horse 3,” he said, nodding to his second cousin, unconsciously repeating the same words he said during the engagement ball. Then to the woman who allegedly came to support him, he allowed himself to smile. For the cameras, he thought.

“I’m glad you decided to come,” He offered his arm, but raised a brow at the stilettos. The warm smile remained on his lips, but the gears in his head were already turning. If not for the press, he would have already asked her whose idea was it to make her wear those tall, thin, heels, and why did she agree. He felt another argument coming, but it could wait until they were out of earshot. “Let’s go inside. The party is just about to start.”

"I'm surprised she came," one of the reporters in the parting crowd murmured to a colleague as Prince Luke was passing them. She wasn't close enough to the throng of hungry broadcasters immediately next to the princess elect. As such she realized that any questions she might want to ask their future royal would not be heard much less answered.

"I wouldn't have," the man next to her responded as he adjusted his sunglasses and ran his hand through his hair. "Makes you wonder if Evolab would have ever imagined the daughter and sister of people they let die with their outrageous prices would be queen some day. Maybe we can't run the story but I don't envy them finding out the truth of their honored guest." That wasn't to say that Evolab's innovations weren't respected. Everyone realized that the company played no small role in helping civilization continue after nearly apocalyptic acts of biological warfare. More than anyone else, however, the media realized that no entity or person was wholly benevolent. Evolab had undoubtedly been started by people seeking self-preservation and to make a profit at the same time. In their current incarnation there were branches and site to the worldwide corporation that had scandal; after all, even charities had been proven time and time again to have their flaws.

"Luke," Rhiane greeted as she turned. The former farmer had expected to find her fiance in a tailored suit, or perhaps some new men's fashion that was making its rounds at the court, but not the military uniform he donned at this moment. For a second her face faltered. Judging by the cameras pointed in their direction her reaction was undoubtedly immortalized and to be plastered across the kingdom's news articles the next day. During the lapse her lips had parted slightly, her eyes had widened, and she had looked at him with undisguised appreciation. It wasn't a show. She genuinely found him to be strikingly handsome in his current attire. Perhaps it was because she recognized that he wasn't wearing anything different than what other servicemen wore and yet he made it look better. On the other hand, it was just as likely to be that for the first time he wasn't wearing clothing that was so expensive, so unreachable, so distinctively elite that he was visually her superior in every way. Luke didn't feel like he was standing on a pedestal while she was in a ditch, he just felt there, next to her, offering his arm politely.

"I knew this was a business event but I didn't realize it was a party. Perhaps a cocktail dress would have been more appropriate?" she commented once her mind no longer felt muddled by the sight in front of her. Tobias had waited patiently for her to regain her ability to speak before he let go of her arm and stepped back to allow space for her future husband to become the proper escort. Rhiane did not, however, close the distance as quickly as she might have the day before. No matter how hard she tried to forget, his romantic overtures of the night before had seared themselves in her psyche. There was a delicate balance to maintain between continuing their charade and giving false hope of sincere emotional attachment.

"Your highness," the bodyguard said, lowering his voice to a whisper and turning his head so that no clever members of the press would be able to read his lips and determine what he was saying. "I brought some of Miss Black's medication in case her shoe choice begins to cause an issue," he reassured, "I will leave it at your discretion." It was the most polite way that Tobias could admit that, despite how congenial the princess elect was with her servants, she had been resistant to his suggestion of preemptive dosing. Fortunately the brazen woman had not been so foolish as to remove her brace. The almost imperceptible silicon support was wrapped firmly around the weakened ankle in question.

Rhiane herself had not heard the minimal exchange and so, while she was curious what words might be shared between the two cousins, she was happy to proceed into the building. Hopefully they would have a few appetizers- though she was not overly optimistic that she would be able to stomach their offerings. Even without knowing the reporters were aware of her history (rather than the fabrication that had been sold to the masses) she was a bit sickened to know where she was going. It was possible she would be face to face with the same executives that so callously believed that if the poor died it was simply the 'way of things.' Certain nobles certainly held such viewpoint. None of them that she was aware of, however, had either directly or indirectly contributed to her personal tragedies of the past.

“No, you are perfect as you are. It is a business event more than a party, but these executives and investors sometimes confuse one for the other,” Luke answered as she took the arm he offered and prepared to move back into the building. “But I’m glad that you decided to come.” Whether he said it for the media coverage or for her alone, was unclear. Deep inside, he really did appreciate that finally there was somebody to share the burden with. It was a rule that he and his sister could not be in the same venue outside of the castle at the same time, except for special events that called for rigorous security measures. The same was true with the queen and Luke. Not that he expected the farmer to contribute to anything other than being a pretty figure on his arm, but at least he could have somebody else to talk to when the businessmen and lords tired him with their endless ass-kissing.

He was about to lead her on to the building and away from the camera flashes, when his cousin informed him about the medication he brought for their stubborn princess. “Hold on to it, for now,” he whispered back. “Join us inside the venue. I’ll call for you if she needs any of it.”

With that out of the way, Luke led his future wife back inside, taking care that their pace would not tax her enough that her ankle would ache. Although he much preferred that she had worn flat shoes, he conceded that the stilettos accentuated the shape of her legs, making her look a lot like a supermodel than the future queen. Heads turned when he re-entered the venue with Rhiane Black on his arm. Nobody expected the farmer-turned-princess to be in attendance. It was a place for business savvy intellectuals to mingle, not for peasants who fortunately had the face and semblance of a brain to win a contest that everybody in that room understood was a publicity stunt ran by the crown. But it would be social suicide for anybody to voice that opinion out loud. If his highness thought she was necessary to attend that afternoon, then everybody had to adjust. One thing was universally accepted though, Ms. Rhiane Black stood out.

A gentleman almost as tall as Luke politely approached the couple as they were headed to their designated table. “Your highness,” He bowed slightly from the waist in acknowledgment of the other person’s status, before straightening up. Luke knew him before he even introduced himself. Those brown eyes, slick blonde hair, and the smile that was the same in most every photo of him on the internet. “My name is Alec Wescott, the new COO of Evolab. I’m afraid we haven’t had the pleasure of meeting in person yet.” The American held out his hand.

Luke stared with question at the hand that he was supposed to shake, but managed a businesslike expression. Of all the people who would greet him, it just had to be the one he would rather not cross paths with. “The pleasure is mine, Mr. Wescott.” The invitation to shake hands and the polite smile of the businessman remained even though it was evident that the royal had no intention of honoring the invitation.

The tension was broken shortly with the intervention of another female guest. One that had much familiarity to the couple. “There you are, Alec,” she said sweetly. Then, figuring out what was happening, explained gently, “The crown prince does not shake the hands of common people. My apologies, your highness.” Her stylists and make-up artists did a good job of dressing her up for the occasion. The actress wore a glittery boatneck long sleeved cocktail dress that perfectly hugged her curves and made the visible skin look ethereal. Her thick black hair was pulled up in a classic updo, and her face had just the right amount of make-up to accentuate her natural beauty, not hide it.

“My sincerest apologies, your highness,” the foreigner echoed, bowing again.

Luke waved it off as cultural differences. “No offense taken, Mr. Wescott. By the way, let me introduce my fiancée, Ms. Rhiane Black.”

Sophia held his gaze as Luke casually, openly, introduced the farmer. There was a hint of something dark in her eyes that was absent in Luke’s when she purposefully looped her arm around the COO’s. They seemed to still be challenging each other when Alec acknowledged the princess elect. “Alec Wescott, at your service, Ms. Black. I have seen your interview last night. Might I comment that you are more beautiful in person. I also happened to recall that you mentioned about a vaccination program. Evolab has a wide array of offerings that may help you, that is, if you would like to open a discussion with our company.”

Mere minutes after Luke had reassured Rhiane that a cocktail dress would not have, in fact, been more appropriate attire, she was staring at an exquisite example of that same item on a familiar face. Idly she wondered if the crown prince had been sincere with her or taking a passive dig at the woman who he apparently was no longer on the best terms with. Technically she was not supposed to know that Sophia was the lady who had shared her fiance's bed the night of the engagement ball. The palace was nothing if not a hub of rumor and gossip, however, and even if her attendants had shielded her from all the whispers running amok they could not keep her from the numerous speculative tabloids. Even peasants seldom kept secrets borne of passion for long and royalty had even less success with their indiscretions. Nothing sold better than scandal. Perhaps, however, the comment had been made by her future husband without the knowledge that his mistress (or former mistress as she couldn't be certain) was clothed in the exact garment he had directed her away from.

There was something in the posture, the body language, and the gazes of the pair that suggested their relationship had changed. Had Luke left yet another broken heart in his way? That the actress and 'Alec' were already romantically entangled suggested he was the quickest rebound imaginable or Sophia had not been exclusive in her entanglements. For a moment she considered it was the entertainer before her that had elected to end the arrangement though she could not fathom why. Truthfully Rhiane was not in competition for anyone's heart, not even her betrothed's, and she might have been willing to come to an understanding so long as she was not required to feign friendship with the third wheel. If this petite paragon of beauty wanted to foolishly concede her claim to power that was her choice to make but her presence did not for one moment make the princess elect falter in her confidence.

"Thank you, Mr. Wescott, you are too kind," she said with an appreciative smile as she bowed her head ever so slightly in gratitude. "I did not expect my interview to attract quite so much attention as it apparently has," she continued as she forced herself not to go stiff on Luke's arm. The COO was young enough it was unlikely he had any involvement in the decisions that had resulted in her mother and brother being unable to afford life-saving treatment. She, the heir to the throne, and the business professional were all still in their teenage years or early twenties at best when the tragedy occurred. It still took substantial resolve to not let her impression of the man be tainted by the history of his employer.

Rhiane was at a crossroads. She knew better than anyone how she was perceived. At home on the Black Farm she had played the part of the simple foolish woman that her male-dominated profession imposed upon her when it had suited. She had exploited the erroneous stereotype to great effect. Despite proving herself in the contest she knew that the highly educated aristocracy thought of her: that she was an addle-minded creature, whose purpose was to create children with Luke's wit, and to smile prettily for the camera. It was her choice now if she wanted to shed this image or try to take advantage of the ignorant assumptions of the elite. Had her dream of community outreach not been on the line she would have selected the former.

"I would be delighted to discuss my vision with you, Mr. Wescott. I can not, of course, guarantee that the kingdom will subsidize such a program, but I believe it could still result in gains for Evolab as well as the people. One more familiar with tax legislation might find a way to argue any vaccines provided were charitable contributions and thus can be included on yearly deductions. Additionally any expenses that would arise, as I realize it would incur travel costs and require properly trained staff, could be included in the budget for advertising as it would certainly help elevate Evolab's public image," she concluded. Princess Elect Rhiane was not just the sultry vixen that enchanted the masses on broadcast. As Luke already knew she was a shrewd woman with a business acumen rare for those in her social class.

But Rhiane was neither try to prove herself or impress. She could sincerely care less if Alec was humoring her while judging her a fool, if Luke perpetuated himself in annoyance and condescension, and Sofia was inwardly rolling her eyes at the farmer trying to reach for influence she ought not to have. The princess elect was motivated purely by her passions and a desire, conjured of hope alone and rather unstable, to be more than a placating face for the poor. There was a possibility that she could offer insight into those stricken with poverty, tactics proud nobles dared not consider, and a reach for those dedicated to rebellion against the monarchy. She didn't necessarily care to stop the revolution, even if she was capable, but she did want to aid those in distress. They had not been forgotten by her no matter how expensive her accoutrements.

With the way she stole precious glances and longing gaze at the crown prince, Luke could guess that Sophia Keller might have miscalculated her move. That the unexpected attendance of the farmer as consequence of her honesty was unprecedented. The actress’ jealousy was the gray overcast that shielded her better judgment leading to a gross misjudgment of her rumored lover’s reaction. Introducing a third party to the already complex relationship appeared to be a good plan when she first thought of it. Luke was notoriously possessive and protective of what he thought was his. By introducing a third party, who was equally accomplished and charming as the blue-eyed prince was, she should have accomplished to activate his possessiveness, which in turn would result with him fighting the odds to buy time for the two of them instead of secretly dating and sharing his space with the farmer.

Sophia’s countenance was politely attentive of the exchange between the Alec, who she had met a few years back when she was travelling, and Luke’s pet. She was a professional actress anyway. The muscles on her face, her body language, was hers to command. A small smile on her red lips and a gentle hand on Alec’s forearm caught the man’s attention. He smiled back. “Oh! Sophia, I’m so sorry.” The businessman’s brows shot up, he shook his head slightly then chuckled nervously. “You are a celebrity, but yes, it is not polite to not have proper introductions. Again, accept my apologies, your highness and Ms. Black. I’m sure you both know Sophia Keller, award-winning actress and singer.”

“I’ve had the pleasure of being acquainted with our crown prince,” Sophia put a lot of meaning behind her words, which one could interpret through the flirtatious girlish smile and sidelong glance at the royal. “But it is the first time that I have met you, Miss Black. May I call you Rhiane?”

“Miss Black will be fine, Sophia,” Luke answered before his amiable fiancée humored the actress. The last thing he needed was for the two to feign a friendly relationship that was grounded on the fact that they both acknowledged the other as the enemy and would rather keep her close. He did not need that kind of drama in his life. Oddly though, his plan might be working. “Mr. Wescott, corporations like yours surely has a budget for corporate social responsibility as your video loop repeatedly boasts. Our kingdom also has an allocated sum of money for such initiatives promoting the health of our citizens, especially the children.” He eyed Rhiane as if to tell her that yes, there is a budget that will subsidize her pet project. “Unfortunately, it is something that I don’t find myself getting involved with, but I may be able to help endorse the project. Please constantly remind me to make calls to the right people, Rhiane.”

“I understand, your highness. We will certainly get in touch. However, the only way such endeavor will be profitable from a marketing stand point is if the media will cover it.” Friendly as he might seem, Alec Wescott was still a businessman, whose end goal was to push their products to the market to improve the turn-around time of the stakeholders’ capital. He was not running a charity institution, therefore when he proposed to open a discussion with the princess elect, he had hoped to take advantage of the perceived low education level of the woman and make her advocacy a strategic partner of Evolab. “It is possible with your help, Ms. Black. As Prince Alessandro’s future wife and this kingdom’s future queen, there will be no lack of media coverage once you spearhead this project. It’s a win-win scenario for both you and I. My company gets its desired return-on-investment and you get to boost your public image as a compassionate ruler.”

Luke had a ready answer at the tip of his tongue, but he stopped himself from uttering that single syllable that would surely earn Rhiane’s disapproval. He was not being sensitive to her preferences. The gentleman kept his lips sealed because he wanted to see how the princess elect would answer this smart businessman’s proposition. There were rules governing him as a royal, which would be the same set of rules that she had to follow once they were married. But those rules technically did not apply to her at that moment. Unlike him, she could, if she chose, endorse a brand. He would be firmly against it, but she could do it for the sake of the cause she was fighting for.

If she would look to him for his opinion on the matter, as if his opinion ever mattered for her, he would just shrug.

The flirty behavior suggested that Sofia was trying to elicit a reaction from Rhiane but she missed her mark. New Rome's princess elect was a jealous and possessive person but she did not feel sufficient attachment to Luke for these feelings to be invoked. It was true that he had made some romantic overtures the night prior, but they had been chased by thinly veiled displeasure at her innocent kiss on the cheek, and he hadn't exactly abandoned all his plans in favor of wooing her through a date today to prove the gestures genuine. The crown prince was hot-and-cold, arrogant, and distant, and while this did not make her despise him, it did make her stop short of an emotional investment beyond their political arrangement. So long as Luke held her at an arm's length she would do the same for him and, as a result, would not feel an ownership to his heart. Watching Sofia was little different from watching a girl she barely knew coyly smile at a business associate. Although she'd be lying to herself if she didn't admit that a tiny hidden part of the former farmer was slightly saddened by her conviction that Luke was so beyond her grasp.

Before answering Alec Wescott Rhiane glanced at Sofia with a look that was a mixture of polite pity and amusement. She did not say anything to the other woman but her expression clearly spoke she felt badly for the actress that had squandered whatever chance she had and was reduced to these petty little games. Soon one of them would be princess, then queen, and the other would be only the former lover rather than a mistress that might have some leverage on policy.

"I am glad to hear you approve," Rhiane said first to Luke. In public her tone was affable and sweet but he had the distinct impression that her gratitude was sincere for his endorsement of this little project she had so suddenly announced on broadcast. "We did not have much time to talk last night after the interview," she admitted. She had a spectacular ability to tell the truth- in this case they didn't have opportunity to converse- while engaging in deception- referring to how they had both fallen asleep quickly while insinuating to the other couple they had partaken in certain nighttime activities. Had he not been present himself and known nothing transpired beyond actual slumber he would have easily suspected the latter before the former. They were, after all, sharing a bed and both highly attractive people.

"The press will almost certainly want to cover this initiative, yes, and I do plan to be personally involved as it is something very dear to me," she stated. "However, I anticipate that will happen regardless of whether or not I have the support of Evolab through their products, if another pharmaceutical company approaches me with a charitable contribution, or I rely on the allocated funds in the treasury to more independently pursue my goal. One could argue that refusing a partnership would be better for an image of a 'compassionate ruler' as it would prove neither myself nor Prince Luke are beholden to a corporate empire in the pursuit of ensuring the health of our people. I concede there could be a failure in a lack of medical professional volunteers, or budgeting promised for another endeavor, but I am happy to meet with any member of the press to explain anything or anyone that might obstruct my vision." It wasn't a threat but it could certainly be interpreted that way. Rhiane was a shining star that had already charmed and dazzled the vast majority of the populace. Considering her background, her hardworking disposition, and her lack of scandal, she could rally people against Evolab more easily than the conglomerate might want to consider.

"I understand that you might be wary of a donation and might want me to personally speak well of Evolab, but I will soon be joined in holy matrimony to the royal family, and so I must be exceeding cautious so as to not reflect poorly on our monarchy. If you would like me to consider a formal endorsement I will need to examine Evolab more closely. An audit, to be performed by a forensic accountant, would be a necessity, as well as a well-documented history of all prior social programs, including not just cost but who they reached, the success with inoculation and/or treatment, and how the individuals were selected versus those that were not covered. I also believe that, in good conscience, I would need an investigation into the northern epidemic of eight years ago. How many were affected, how many Evolab assisted in testing, how many were subsidized in treatment or preventative measures, quotes that given to to the afflicted, offers extended for those in life-or-death scenarios, profit margins for that quarter. I know that predates your appointment to your position but," she said with a saccharine smile, "it would be strange if I didn't want that information, don't you think?"

Rhiane wasn't an anticipated guest. The crown had expressly forbidden any mention through the press coverage of the contest that any mention be made of the epidemics that struck the northern reaches of the kingdom from eight years ago. She had not been the only candidate who had emerged from a town devastated by contagion. This blemish on history had been buried and along with it the truth about both her mother and brother's deaths. Officially there were death certificates that said what they had died from but it was social suicide to approach the topic further. Broaching the subject could only lead to discussion of how greed, negligence, and indifference had cost the lives of more than two farmers before the nation realized they had to aggressively eliminate the threat of it spreading further if not cured.

"Luke, would it be all right if we sat?" she asked with a gesture towards her ankle in its silicone brace. It was sore but not excessively painful; she was just taking advantage of the convenient excuse to get away from the duo that neither of them truly wanted to talk with further.

Alec Wescott was not at all intimidated by the numerous requirements that the princess elect demanded as prerequisite for participation to the project that she would be organizing. An audit, a review of financial records, historical data on the company’s past charity work, and perhaps the capability of the company to react to an epidemic – these were all reasonable requests from a potential client, especially one affiliated to the crown. It was not something new to him, because on his way to becoming a COO, he had the pleasure of interacting with the different forms of governments throughout the globe. It was the farmer, who had taken him by surprise. The COO clearly underestimated the woman’s mental prowess because of her pedigree. She spoke and carried herself like an educated woman, which was not to be expected from a mere farmer.

Nevertheless, the foreigner managed to maintain his good-natured countenance. “I fully understand, Miss Black. Rest assured that Evolab will comply to all the requisites.” He turned to Luke. The woman may be the brains behind the outreach, but Alec recognized that her future husband was the real authority who could make or break the deal. “This will not be the first time that we will be engaging with a partnership with the government,” Alec continued, though he was addressing Luke directly that time. “Without meaning to boast, we’ve had successful health campaigns in the Americas and the kingdoms in the middle east, where we continue to partner with the Health Ministries or Departments – whatever they are called – in promoting better quality of life.”

The crown prince, on the other hand, was relishing the element of surprise that Rhiane brought to the table. She was his wildcard that afternoon – his secret weapon against Sophia and his against the young COO’s sweet talking. Both were working absurdly well. His ex-lover was struggling to control her composure, while her alleged new love was not getting the result he thought he would that afternoon. The quick dismissal of his sultry date was the cherry on top. Luke kept his face blank and businesslike, but deep inside he was proud of what the farmer had accomplished without his help.

“Just a moment, love,” Luke smiled at Rhiane, before addressing both the COO and the actress who had fallen inexplicably quiet throughout the exchange. “As I have mentioned, I do not usually involve myself in these types of projects. But I assure you, Mr. Wescott, that there will be a public bidding to give fair chance to every able party willing to support Rhiane’s cause. It will also work to dispel any doubt from the public’s minds that either I, my mother, or my future wife has played favorites. The matter on who gets to win the contract for this project will be left to the hands of the Bids and Awards Committee.” To anybody who knew where to find the information, every noble house’s assets was accessible. Annual reports summarizing their sources of income, properties, etc. were available to the public to show a semblance of transparency. Luke’s ownership of shares of Evolab was therefore not totally a secret. “Much as I would like to talk further about business, I’m afraid that we have to excuse ourselves.”

Alec was gracious enough to let them go without passing another argument that tried to sell the organization he represented. “It was a pleasure discussing a potential partnership with you, your highness and Miss Black. I am fully aware of Miss Black’s unfortunate accident the other night, and I rather suggest that she rest her foot. We have plenty of time to discuss business and economic matters later.” He gestured for one of the ushers to guide the couple to their table.

Luke thanked the COO and passed a glance at Sophia before turning to follow the woman tasked with leading them to their designated seats. He had a feeling that his plan was working and if her sudden lack of words was an indication, then he was correct.

“Whose idea was the stilettos?” the prince asked after a few steps. If he was smiling when he called her ‘love’ moments earlier, his voice was humorless asking her the question. She was not used to wearing heels and she already hurt herself while wearing a pair. Whoever had suggested that it was a good idea to don another pair must either be absurdly unwise or had ill-wishes towards the princess elect.

They reached a circular table covered in white table cloth with blue trimmings. Like a gentleman, he pulled her chair out for her and waited for her to take a seat before he did so himself. Four other empty chairs surrounded the furniture. “A simple ‘No’ would have sufficed,” he commented regarding her response to Evolab’s COO. “I must admit that I am impressed that you do not seem to be threatened by Alec Wescott’s stature. However, the epidemic eight years ago is very specific.” Then it hit him and when it did, when his mind was finally able to connect the dots, the prince’s lips fell into a flat line. Her mother and brother. He wanted to say something else, but a message caught his attention.

I need to talk to you, it said.

"The stilettos were my idea," Rhiane immediately replied to his inquiry without an ounce of shame or regret. "You've spent time in the military. Is there not a saying about not wading onto a battlefield unarmed? If you thought I considered this business event as anything less you are sorely mistaken. I knew I needed every weapon in my arsenal and not just for myself; if I did not wear high-heeled shoes like every other woman in attendance they would be whispering about how weak your fiancee was to let her injury get the best of her." Tobias, her attendants, and the medical staff that had been summoned briefly for a consult on what medicines to take with them in case of an emergency had all stringently opposed her selection. Unfortunately for all of them the princess elect outranked them and used this to her advantage. Queen Camilla had been busy, Luke absent, and there was not enough time for Dr. Gulsvig to intervene even if he had been so inclined. The former farmer flexed her powers in unusual circumstances and without the slightest consideration for her own well-being. Her casual tone and disposition suggested that she was relatively apathetic if she worsened the sprained joint.

She sincerely didn't know why he was so invested in her health. For a man that had to be physically chained to her by his mother to keep him from fleeing to someone else's bed it was bizarre. Multiple times now he had expressed concern between bouts of dismissal and annoyance without any real explanation. Luke did not seem the type to worry himself unnecessarily over people he cared little for. At first she had thought he was anxious about how she might reflect upon him but it felt less and less that was his primary motivation.

"There's nothing to be intimidated by," she proclaimed as she took her seat. She was speaking of Alec Wescott of course but she paused to address her betrothed. "Thank you," Rhiane said. It was etiquette that might have compelled the heir to the throne to pull out her chair but she wanted to express her gratitude nonetheless. "He has everything to lose by campaigning against me and I have very little, if nothing, to lose in comparison. It's in his best interests to play nicely with me but I do not feel any such obligation towards him."

And what she said was true. Queen Camilla, Ms. Viscomi, and the rest of the public relations team in the employ of the crown would protect Rhiane from scandal so long as it was within reason. Trying to replace a princess elect would be an inconvenience at best but potentially catastrophic at worst. If Alec Wescott in particular tried to smear her name he would be gambling whether or not the shrewd monarch would keep the reporters at bay that were angling to expose the tragic circumstances that had resulted in the loss of both Violet Black and Edwin Black eight years ago. The queen was not blameless but if she launched the story first she could paint Evolab as the true enemy of the public, or at least portray herself as trying to right wrongs and make amends by taking the former farmer into the family, while Evolab was attacking a victim of their corporate greed. He would quickly realize it was a fight that could destroy the international pharmaceutical empire or at least give their competitors a strong edge to replace their standing.

"I hope he delivers the documentation," she admitted honestly as she crossed her legs. A few lords glanced over at the movement despite themselves and glimpsed the long, immaculately bronzed skin that shifted the pencil skirt to hug the curves more. Sofia might be a distraction for the 'party' but so was the sultry vixen clad in professional attire. "Financial records are seldom as flawless as they first appear if you dig deep enough and he no doubt expects me to applaud his social programs more generously than is reality. If he's bold enough to also launch the investigation- well, I never actually intended to accept his partnership- but that doesn't mean I can't use my endorsement as leverage to get accountability. We can't change the past but we can try to right its wrongs, can't we?" she sighed.

They had never spoken explicitly about their deceased parents but she suspected that Luke might be able to empathize. He knew who killed his father as well as why but she doubted he ever truly "got over it." Nothing would bring back the dead but there was a part of her that wanted people to mourn besides her, for someone to help shoulder the sense of blame and loss, to not ache at the injustice. As she looked at Like she wondered idly if he tried to forget the late king or, if not, how he chose to remember his father. Rhiane did not know the any of the royalty intimately even now but he had seemed to be a good man, someone that even her family had approved of, and who was sorely missed in the current climate. If her fiance could be a few steps closer to his paternal side rather than so solidly representative of the maternal...

"Is something wrong?" she asked when he fell quiet. "If there is something you need to address Tobias can keep me company while you are busy. He quite agrees with you the stilettos were a poor choice so he will absolutely make certain I don't leave the table."

“What?” Luke lowered his left arm where the communication band was snuggly fitted on his wrist, concealed by the sleeves of his gray uniform. “No… Sorry just a message. Nothing important.” It was not just a message. That single line was what he had been waiting for the whole day – the chance for a conversation wherein his words would not fall into deaf ears. It was the best indication that Rhiane, whether or not she was aware of it, succeeded in fulfilling her purpose that afternoon. Nevertheless, the crown prince was not eager to respond to the request for an audience, thus he turned his attention back to his accomplice. Not that he was dismissing his paramour’s demand, he was just delaying his move so as not to be interpreted as being weak-willed.

Luke leaned his weight on one side which was closest to his date. It might be the uniform that inspired her to use a military analogy to justify her unwise choice of footwear. “Soldiers are not allowed to operate a weapon without proper training on how to use such a weapon. Moreover, when a soldier is injured, Rhiane Black, he or she will not be deployed to the battlefield. I truly appreciate you coming on a short notice, but I find myself constantly worrying that your chosen pair of shoes, regardless of how sexy those are making you look, will lead to another accident.” He felt another message notification buzzed on his wrist, but it was ignored. “The queen informed me this morning that preparations for her planned tour were already completed. We will be leaving the capital tomorrow. So, please take care not to worsen the condition of your sore ankle or inflict the same injury on the other foot. It will be very inconvenient if that happens.”

As they were conversing, a waiter carrying a silver tray of half-filled wine glasses passed nearby. Luke motioned for the young man to come over with the intention of plucking a couple of glasses for him and Rhiane. The young man who was aware of the importance of the person who summoned him, hurriedly strode to the table and gracefully placed wine glasses on the table beside all the silver fineries. Thanking the young man, the crown prince took the glass that was his and took a small sip to sample its content.

Mr. Wescott was present at the corner of his vision. He was socializing with the other attendees, getting to know the investors of the organization, and creating relationships with the people in power whose decisions may impact the industry. Luke identified himself with the COO on that ground. They were both leaders who had people dependent on them and people who could either bring the organization to its goal or ruin it. For Evolab it was the investors, but for Luke it was the noble houses then the common people.

“Do you blame Evolab for your loss?” The question came out in the middle of his musings. He theorized that the reason she was very interested in the epidemic that affected the northern territories eight years before was that it might be what killed her mother and brother. Even so, it was not fair to blame it on a corporation who, in the end, had provided the cure for the said epidemic. There was only so much that a medication could do to help cure an ailing person. It might be that her family members had weak immune system to begin with, which made it easier for the viral infection to consume the host. “I do remember you saying that your mother and brother died of the same disease. What could a biotechnology company, whose vision is to provide cure, has to do with it when this same company developed the same drug that helped cure the victims?”

The device on his wrist vibrated signifying another notification. Another message from the actress, perhaps. Like him, she was not used to waiting, but the prince was inclined to make her wait. He did, after all, waited for more than an hour in the parking lot just to see her. And when she did make time for him, she had to ruin everything by telling him that she had someone else she would like to be exclusive with.

Rhiane had barely kept herself from rolling her eyes from Luke's chastisement framed by an analogy. It was his calling her 'sexy' that sent another mixed message that made her mind whirl to a stop mid-objection. As confusing as the courts might be she had thought that he would be honest with her if she was with him; it was mutually beneficial if they could communicate clearly since their reputations affected one another directly. In practice she had found him horribly confusing. Either Luke himself wasn't quite certain how to handle the arranged marriage he was being thrust into or he was more mischievous than she had anticipated.

"You shouldn't worry. Even if I do end up aggravating my injury, or if I am purposefully toppled over again as I told you happened the first time, Tobias is going with us on the tour. The inconvenience to you should be minimal," she reassured before she found herself saying, "and I stand by my choice. If I was going to attend I wanted to ensure that I at least made a certain impression." Whether or not the fellow attendees of influence interpreted her the way she wished to be perceived remained to be seen. The princess elect was hopeful that they would see her heels as a subtle reinforcement of the strength she had shown in the contest. It was not just physical strength that had carried her to victory. Mental fortitude was just as, if not more, critical to her past, present, and future, and would be more relevant if she wanted to achieve any goals before Queen Camilla had her executed. No one- not even Luke himself- would let her spearhead any initiatives if they thought her weak and meek.

When the wine glass was delivered to their table Rhiane delicately placed it in front of her. Back on the farm she drank enough alcohol that her tolerance was higher than her brother and almost as remarkable as her father's. For the past few years they had been discreetly creating their own liquor with a distill set up on the edge of a field closest to the forest. Her hesitation in partaking was that she wasn't very familiar with wine. What it was supposed to taste like, how much she should politely imbibe without embarrassing them, how closely she should time her sips. There were many things she needed an education on to really navigate professional affairs much to her chagrin. Ordering a tall mug of dark beer would be more comfortable but scandalous for the royal couple.

Luke's question jerked her attention away from the beverage. "It's for the best I don't answer that," she said slowly. Rhiane had resolved not to lie to him so she didn't falsely assert she couldn't answer; however, she knew if they discussed how she personally assigned fault he might stumble into the realization Evolab wasn't the only entity she blamed. No matter how strained and challenging they might find their current relationship, he had not taken her prior deceptions well, and she certainly misled in every interview that even alluded to the tragedy of eight years ago. The princess elect blamed the crown for their part in her loss. If she didn't love her family more than she cared about her own livelihood she would have never submitted herself to relation to the cold indifference of the monarchy. That was what had put such a strain on her small surviving family unit.

"But what I will tell you is that when my mother fell ill we took her to the doctor. She was everything to us and so we panicked. The diagnosis was frightening but she wasn't past the "point of no return"- it was just that treatment was costly. We took her home and tried to...," Rhiane paused and cleared her throat. Thus far she had kept her composure but it was evident that the topic conjured painful memories. Her voice became increasingly detached as she compartmentalized and spoke as if it was someone else's story. If Luke idly wondered if the woman had allowed her time and space to grieve he would know now she had not. "We tried to scrape together enough money to pay for the medications. Then Edwin was sick and knew from his symptoms that he had what Mom did... but it was too late for both of them. When you're as poor as we were liquidating funds is a challenge in the best of situations. It had spread far enough in our vicinity that no one could buy our equipment because they needed to help save themselves, or someone else they knew, or they just could not afford it with spiking prices with so many people not working."

She sighed. "On official records it says we didn't take mother or brother to a physician until they were incurable. According to those reports there's no one to blame and, if there was, it would be the negligent people who inexplicably let their loved ones waste away without seeking medical attention." That was to say with the careful editing that was done both during and after the epidemic Evolab and the throne were innocent and she, her surviving brother, and her father were guilty of 'letting' death claim the lives of Violet Black and Edwin Black. It was insult to injury.

"I can say that right now I don't personally blame Mr. Wescott. Any sins of his predecessor aren't his," she added, "it's what he chooses to do with the truth, and how he steers the company forward hereafter, that I will judge him by." Rhiane danced around drawing a parallel to her fiance. Even in the privacy of the island she did not feel safe enough with the crown prince to say she thought his mother was deeply flawed, but it was a close as she could come to stating that transgressions of Queen Camilla were not Luke's in her mind. There was still an opportunity for him to set himself apart and choose a path of his own making rather than the one she laid out. "Right now I can't say he's my favorite person, though. That he thought I was a naive idiot speaks to a gap in his expertise."

“Tobias,” he said the name thoughtfully as Luke tilted the wine glass to his lips for another sip. The dark liquid had a fruity aroma, but thankfully was not too sweet. He much preferred something with more alcohol content. Then again, even if the hall was decorated to look and feel like one of the parties that aristocrats hosted, that afternoon’s event was still a business function. Thus, the light-bodied wine being served to the guests. Even then, he noticed how Rhiane politely accepted the glass only to ignore it like she did in the last few meals he had shared with her. Her alcoholic preference was not his concern though. What was stuck in his head was Tobias Lavanchy, his second cousin. Rhiane had known the man for just a day and yet she spoke of him as if he was the most reliable person in the palace.

“It is still inconvenient to walk at a slow pace while assisting an injured lady. Sometimes I might even have to carry her. Tobias will not be much help in public – which I expect is where we will be spending most of our time.” A small smile tugged the corner of his lips. For those curious eyes stealing glances at them, he thought. The prince may be criticizing her poor choices, but he was not about to let everybody in attendance see how disappointed he was at such a small misstep that had cost him his freedom. “I commend you for standing by your choice, princess. I do hope you will not make a fuss about seeing Dr. Gulsvig when you aggravate the already aggravated ankle.” He raised his glass to her, inviting her to have a drink with him, but seeing that she would not touch her own glass of wine, shrugged and savored the bittersweet liquid.

But her apparent hesitation to see a physician was not the case when she was younger. She did admit to bringing her ailing mother to a doctor. Public Health was something he happily delegated to someone else entirely. He was not a physician and the intricacies of the factors that made the body sick was not his cup of tea. Embarrassing as it may sound, but he was not fully informed of what had really happened eight years ago, not even the statistics that detailed how many were infected and how many died. Was her version of the story the truth or was she, being at fault, trying to redeem herself by rewriting history?

Nevertheless, her outreach project would happen so long as she would not drag him into the mess of the bidding process, procurement, logistics, and coordination of the whole thing. He already had a lot on his hands to supervise a small initiative that would keep her busy and out of his way. Hopefully, he could also use it as means to frequently request the monarch to disable the implants.

“I cannot comment without enough knowledge on the matter,” the prince admitted his lack of information aloud. He did promise to be honest with her anyway, plus believing her statement would be admission that there was something wrong in the system, while denying her story all together would mean an undoubtedly very public disagreement. The latter was something neither of them needed. “Although I have to ask. Do you blame me for what happened to your family?” Could it be the reason why she had repeatedly rejected his romantic advances among other things that he was offering her for free? Well, except for the cannoli.

Luke watched her quietly, no longer pretending to be discussing a light topic with her. He thought about her response. If she said yes, then it explained why she was being oddly unattracted to him. On one hand, it was good because he didn’t need to worry about her taking his gestures to mean one thing when it meant nothing. However, on the other hand, it was an unsettling feeling to have failed and to have that particular failure cost the life of a dearly loved mother. He would, if he could, prevent the accident that killed his father. But like what Sophia said, not everything was under his control.

In any case, Rhiane was saved from answering at that moment by a call. Luke, already wary of emergency situations happening in the middle of the day, immediately checked who was calling. Then he sighed. “Sorry, this is my uncle.” The man got to his feet and waved across the room to one of the men in dark tailored suits. At least it was not an emergency. “I have to at least greet him or else he might be inclined to believe that his nephew lacks courtesy. I will introduce you to the duke later, but for now please enjoy your wine.” He nodded his head at Tobias, who had automatically turned his attention to Luke as soon as the prince got to his feet. No hand gestures or messages was needed. Tobias knew what to do, especially as Luke walked away from the table leaving Rhiane alone.

Rhiane didn't blame Luke. He was older than she was and had been saddled with responsibilities as crown prince for some time now, but she sincerely doubted that eight years ago Queen Camilla would have entrusted the crisis to him if only to spare the monarchy from any scandal that might have emerged from missteps borne from inexperience. It took perfect control to paint the epidemic as a tragedy that an unavoidable health nightmare through the media. If he had utilized the wrong syntax, or not anticipated an avenue of the press coverage, or not had the leverage of power to bend the broadcast to his will their reputation would have been severely damaged. The queen might love her son but she would not unnecessarily gamble with him before he had the benefit of a few more years under his belt to form the necessary business relationships to suppress certain news. Even now Rhiane suspected that Luke didn't have expertise in handling the public as deftly as his mother might want.

She couldn't confirm, however, that she didn't fault both Queen Camilla and Evolab as well as some of the physicians that had been initially dispatched to the affected areas. Many people heard words drip from the lips of the doctors that there was nothing they could do because, while there might be a cure, or various treatments to delay the progress of the deadly affliction, or they could ease the suffering of the dying with pain medication, they personally could not finance the costs of all their patients. It had all come down to money. The crown didn't jump at the chance to subsidize some of their poorest citizens' pain management or cures. Evolab didn't generously donate their resources even as a charitable contribution that could be used on tax deductions. No one wanted to pay for the poverty-stricken and unsightly ill that were not part of their community or social circles. Rhiane had read on the first anniversary of the 'eradication' that the disease that had really killed so many loved ones was poverty.

Unfortunately for all three princes and the princess, many saw them as "fruit of the poisoned tree." Princess Calista was viewed more positively than the rest because of her perceived innocence and affable charm. There would be more difficultly for her fiance when he toured the nation. Not just the rebellion saw him as his mother's son, someone who was fiercely loyal to the aristocratic blood that flowed through his veins rather than that of his common father, someone who had all but abandoned half of his parentage. Now that she knew the man in question she worried for his composure if he realized just how much even her brother and father saw him just another generation of his mother, as if his father never existed at all, and how the belief he had forgotten the late consort was a galvanizing force against him.

Whether Luke would show empathy and understanding for all of New Rome, not just the titled and wealthy, remained to be seen. If he could, and if he could more earnestly participate in the romantic charade of their engagement, he might start to legitimately hinder the progression of the revolution.

"Tobias," she greeted as he slid into the chair previously occupied by his cousin. His hair had been carefully slicked back and while his intentions had not been challenge the finery or chiseled features of the attendees of this business event, it was hard not to notice that he was much more handsome than the other bodyguards littered around the edges of the room. Speculation about his bachelor status was not unwarranted. Had he had the desire he could have left a trail of broken hearts just as easily as Luke had though it would have been with another subsection of society.

"Miss Black," he replied in monotone with a nod of his head. In private he might have the freedom- with her approval- to address her by her first name, but in this setting such casual familiarity would have been wildly inappropriate.

"What do you think of the vaccination initiative I proposed? Not as Luke's cousin, or a member of the extended royal family, or even as my newly appointed bodyguard, but just... as a member of the world?" she asked. It was a lot to ask. So much of Tobias's life was governed by his status she wasn't certain if she would get the honest answer she wanted if she received one at all. Fortunately the taciturn individual was forthcoming when he put forth the effort to engage in conversation.

"I do not think most of the candidates would conclude their first interview thinking of others," he stated resolutely. It was the diplomatic way to say that many of the women had competed for the money, fame, and arm candy alone, not because they had selfless motivations. Of the ones he had seen that might be more compassionate some were so tender-hearted he had thought they'd be eaten alive in the courts if Luke himself didn't destroy them first. "I think it is a very worthy goal and it makes me glad you were chosen above the rest. I am sure some of the citizens feel the same."

It was an unabashed compliment that made Rhiane first smile and then grin without restraint. Onlookers might wonder what they were discussing especially since Tobias's posture was so rigid while Rhiane was reclining slightly but away from her companion rather than towards. Luke would not be fielding rumors that they were infatuated, as their body language and physical distance made it clear they were not, but he might have a few questions as to why such a lowly servitor was able to befriend someone who was more guarded with them.

“There he is, our future king,” the duke burst with pride upon spotting the heir tracing a straight line that led to him. He pointed his half-consumed wine to his nephew’s direction and like sheep to the shepherd, the lords and ladies he was conversing with turned their attention to Luke.

Lady Eladia Voight dragged her deep-set green eyes at the entirety of the tall gentleman’s appearance – from the top of his head to the tip of his boots, then the other way around. Any comment that might have formed in her head was left unsaid, but to anybody who knew the mannerisms of the forty-something woman, the thinning of those dark red lips would have been a subtle sign that she did not approve of their crown prince’s style choices. His good looks and that aura of confidence were his saving grace. Although she conceded that the man would look good even in rags, Lady Voight would argue strongly against it. Fashion was her business more than anybody’s in that ballroom and whatever these royalties wore would surely be the next fad. “I saw our beloved crown prince enter the venue with his fiancée.” She shrugged, her eyes not leaving its prey even as he drew closer. “Our future king has good sense, though, to have left her in her seat and not force us to pretend that we enjoy interacting with the common people. I mean, it’s exhausting to invent ways to flatter the unworthy, am I right?” Her pompous, modulated laughter was echoed by the others in way of agreement.

“Just be careful with that opinion around the prince,” warned another lord.

“Nonsense,” barked the duke. “My nephew is the worst out of all of us, everyone knows that.”

Lady Voight nodded. She lowered her voice when she replied with, “I mean, who in his right mind leaves his engagement ball to spend the night with another woman?” It was an open secret in court that contrary to what Queen Camilla declared on live broadcast, her son was not participating in a classified mission that night. Castello di Firanze would not be the home of the royals without rumors of scandalous affairs and acts bouncing off its glass walls. The other lords, satisfied with the example given, nodded in agreement. Unlike the general public that the crown sought to deceive, the highly educated men and women sitting near the top of the food chain were not fooled by the publicity stunt commissioned by the queen herself. They all new what the arranged marriage was all about, and oddly a significant portion of the nobility supported it.

The conversation was hushed, thoughtful faces and conflicting emotions were silenced as the subject of their discussion approached. The lords and ladies, all were at least five years older than Luke, made a customary bow as gesture of obeisance. Their future king, on the other hand, kept a straight, slightly bored expression on his face. “A pleasant afternoon, my lords and ladies,” he said in a manner of greeting.

“We were just talking about you, your highness,” the duke replied, addressing the younger man formally in public rather than being casual about his status. “For a while there I thought you opted to skip the event for something worthier of your valuable time.”

In the background, one of the hosts announced that the program will be starting in about twenty minutes but encouraged the attendees to help themselves with the small portions of appetizers being offered around by waiters. Luke waited for the masculine voice to finish his piece. “I can name a few somethings which I find are more worthwhile than socializing in an event such as this, my lord, but Evolab does provide employment for a number of our people. It contributes both to the manufacturing industry and the advancement in research, which is in alignment with the economic policies being supported by the queen.”

The duke’s light blue eyes crinkled in the corners when he grinned. “In other words, your mother will not be happy if you choose to not honor this commitment.”

“Precisely.”

The other lords and ladies joined the duke’s lighthearted laughter, but Luke only smiled. Precisely the people he wanted to avoid, which was why he could think of other things he would rather off doing. Just like finally meeting with and talking to the sender of the message that buzzed on his wrist while the older people were pretending to be amused.

“My prince, I happen to notice your fiancee is sitting with someone.” Lady Voight masked the malice in her sentence with the sweetness of her voice. At her comment, they all turned their attention at the princess elect and the undeniably attractive man occupying the seat that was once Luke’s. It was that precise moment when Rhiane was caught with a carelessly happy expression on her face as she was talking to the bodyguard. Luke had questions running in his head, but it was not the time to entertain such thoughts.

“I believe that he is the same person who escorted our princess elect to the venue,” added another lord. “Is he perhaps Miss Black’s old acquaintance?” The easiness in her body language was contrary to the stiff and formal manner with which she held herself around him. If he did not know better, he would be inclined to entertain the possibility suggested by the older man, but Luke knew Tobias and Rhiane. He was sure that the Victors ball was the first time the two met. And yet the lord had a point.

Luke’s expression did not change except for the split-second narrowing of the eyes. “Tobias Lavanchy,” he said the name as if the bodyguard was somebody the nobles should know of. Apparently, that was not the case. Not even the duke seemed to remember who it was. “Tobias is related to me by blood – second cousin, son of my father’s brother. As of this morning, he is Rhiane’s bodyguard.”

“Oh, I remember the little boy who used to play with you a lot.”

The crown prince smiled at that. “Yes, uncle. He’s the one.”

“But a male bodyguard?” the lady objected. “Shouldn’t she be assigned an equally capable female companion?”

“It is out of my hands, to be honest, my lady. Besides, I really do not care who keeps her company while I do what needs to be done.” The conversation was heading to a direction he would rather not cross, so Luke politely asked to be excused and left the group, parting the crowd of black suits as he did so.

Tobias Lavanchy was in quite the predicament. As Queen Camilla had almost certainly deduced, the palace staff was compromised. Since the death of her first husband, who was commoner by birth, the rebellion had gained momentum steadily. He knew for a fact he was not the only individual within the castle's walls that had joined its ranks as discontent among the lower and middle classes grew. Knowledge was compartmentalized by the leaders of the coup so he unfortunately did not know who was a loyalist and who was a passionate believer in the revolution's agenda. Perhaps servants of the royal family and courts had been frustrated by their proximity to titles and affluence just outside their reach. The bodyguard speculated that the more intimately someone new the nobility- their avarice, their condescension, their greed, their egos- the more it convinced that a change in power was absolutely needed. Very few saw the ugly side of the aristocracy bearing down upon them and were persuaded that there were no problems with the status quo.

But the rebellion was deeply divided on how to handle the issue of Rhiane Black.

Before she had been selected as the princess elect there had been no one to represent the general public so close to the crown. It had been easier to spread effective propaganda painting Queen Camilla, her prince consort, and her children as villains that would trample all over their rights and livelihoods. Since Rhiane's arrival, however, they had gained a figure to whom many could relate, who had struggled herself through loss and poverty, who was compassionate, who was charming, who seemed both honest and earnest. If anyone was capable of freezing their recruitment it was the bold and confident farmer who flashed bright smiles and walked among the elites as if she had always belonged.

The majority of the rebellion believed that someone as empathetic and intelligent as Rhiane could be brought to their side. If successful they would have someone who could spill all the secrets of the monarchy, who could give compelling speeches borne of personal experience, who could dispel the illusions the general public held onto that the queen only thought of their best interests. Right now all of their spokespersons were of low status and were only experts on the conditions that directly affected them. A vocal minority of the rebellion, however, thought the best way to capitalize on Rhiane's position was to make her into a martyr. Were she to tragically die now it would be a crushing blow to the crown; they would look incompetent, they would have to have a new contest for Luke's hand in marriage, and Rhiane would be forever remembered as an almost perfect princess elect. The common man and woman would be enraged. Their anger would galvanize resentment, would make them more likely to suspect Queen Camilla had her executed no matter the truth, and would remind everyone just how replaceable they were to the top of the social pyramid.

All of this led to Tobias's current problem. He did not know who among the palace staff was secretly a member of the rebellion or at least a sympathizer, he did not know who wanted to convert Rhiane and who might be plotting to kill her, and he could not even trust his cousin with his fears without outing his treason. The queen had appointed him in part, he thought, because she knew there were traitors in her midst and the family of her late husband was less likely to betray her than the heirs of less prestigious bloodlines that would benefit greatly from her downfall. He wanted Rhiane to defect to the revolutions' cause and leave Luke's sisde (who he saw as undeserving of her). If he did not act quickly, however, it was possible if not probable an assassination would happen right under his nose.

"You are a very kind person, Tobias," Rhiane said, cutting through his thoughts and momentarily distracting him from the life-or-death situation that threatened her without her knowledge. "But we must both admit there is more I could do besides a vaccination program... assuming, of course, that the promises made today are honored."

Her male counterpart was silent. Although he had to concede she was correct, if he was to help motivate her to help New Rome's citizens while still as fiancee to Prince Luke, heir to the throne, then it would be counter to his interests. Never had he imagined that he would be compelled not to help the suffering destitute for the perceived greater good.

"I'm not sure what the schedule includes for the national tour, but perhaps between the bouts of sight-seeing we could visit a hospital, or a shelter, or a food bank, or some other charitable center for the indigent and ill," she wondered aloud. Before she could continue that train of thought a waiter had come to their table with a large platter artfully decorated with several varieties of gourmet appetizers.

"Oh, thank you," she said as she selected three different types to sample. "Would you like any, Tobias."

"It would not be proper, Ms. Black," he said with a nod to the waiter who departed once it was clear that they were finished with the tray. "Does the wine not suit you? I am happy to request a glass of water instead," he offered politely.

"No, I'm just not familiar with the etiquette regarding this sort of drink," she confessed easily. "One sip should be all right, shouldn't it?" she queried rhetorically as she took the tiniest of sips. It was more sweet than she had anticipated- as she was used to the bitter taste of liquor with its high alcohol concentration- but not unpleasant. Once her mouth was washed with the liquid she delicately bit into a cracker garnished with a topping completely foreign to her.

Suddenly Tobias was anxious. If he were a member of the rebellion fixated on making Rhiane into a martyr this would be the perfect setting to impute culpability onto a corporate conglomerate, as well as create conspiracies that the royal family and the nobility were involved given their attendance and Rhiane's relative isolation at the event. Hopefully he was just being paranoid. The odds of any single attendant being a compatriot was improbably low. As the princess elect continued to eat with impeccable manners, however, he had to admit it wasn't impossible.

Just like in every social function he attended, there was not a second when the crown prince was caught being idle. He was greeted, left and right, by people whose faces he barely knew – investors and businessmen, foreign dignitaries, high-ranking officers of the company, and of course lords and ladies and their offspring. It was easy enough to smile and nod and even hold a small conversation. This was his world, and these were the people he knew how to please even though at times their too obvious flattery would get in his nerves.

The royal moved from one group of people to another. There was no lack of invitation from his peers to join them in a short conversation. He laughed at their anecdotes and briefly shared his opinion when asked, but everything was half-hearted. If anybody in any of the group knew more of the man than his title, then it would be obvious to that person that his head was somewhere else. And it was. He was continuously scanning the room for that dark-haired beauty until he found her sitting with women her age and clinking glasses of champagne. When she looked up from the lip of the glassware, her eyes flickered to his and for a second, she seemed to not believe that he was there. Just for a second, though, because she quickly excused herself as he looked away with a witty comment at the tip of his tongue for his fellow investor. As Luke conversed, he tried to keep track of her in his peripheral vision. She seemed to be headed to an alcove, which led to either the bathrooms or the anterooms. Sophia turned to the direction of the anterooms.

And it was where he found her after a few minutes. “I cannot remember a time when you made me wait that long.” She was sitting on an armchair directly facing the door and was opposite what looked like a conference table, or maybe it was a dining table. The actress occupied the space that appeared to be the sitting area. The light of the afternoon sun coming through the glass panels behind her cast a shadow over her features.

Luke, not the least intimidated by her tone and posture, remained by the door. If by any chance somebody walked in on them, it would appear that the two of them were just having a personal conversation. It was a situation they could easily maneuver out of as long as they don’t stay out of the people’s eye sights long enough. “I find no reason to speak with you after what you said earlier today.” The words rang in the room even when he did not raise his voice. It was devoid of emotion, something like a doctor telling his patient that he had less than twenty-four hours left to live.

“And yet, here you are, my love,” the actress drawled, a smile tugging one corner of her red lips.

“I know, and the more I stay the more it feels like a bad idea. My fiancée is sitting out there, your newest play thing is too, and so do possibly hundreds of guests wondering where Luke and his rumored paramour have gone to. I cannot afford a repeat of the other night. Therefore, if you have something important to talk about, say it while I still have the patience to listen.” Acting was admittedly not his strong suit, but thanks to Sophia, Luke could gather enough coldness inside him to back those sentences. He wanted, more than anything else, for a chance to get back to how things were with Sophia before his engagement to a commoner. It might be farfetched, but he thought it was doable. It was just that the actress had to bring in a third party in an already complicated relationship.

The woman got to her feet. In her five-inch heels, her long legs closed the distance between them rather sinuously. He would be a hypocrite if he would say that he was not attracted to this woman in her tight cocktail dress. “I don’t want to lose you, Luke,” she whispered, laying her cheek on his chest. “I was selfish. I thought it will hurt less if I ended things with you, but I know now that there is a greater pain that exists than seeing you happy with that peasant, and it’s knowing that at the end of it all, I will not be there to stand by your side.”

“Then, better make up your mind, woman.” He let her stay where she was, but he fought against wrapping his arms around her. It used to be an instinctive gesture of affection. She loved being trapped in his arms when she felt vulnerable, and he took comfort in knowing that he could be her fortress. But everything had changed. She had made a move to change the dynamics that had worked well for the two of them. “It’s either me or Wescott. Either way, you get to live as a queen for the rest of your life.”

The master of ceremony again called the attention of the guests reminding them to find their seats. Luke had silently slipped into his after his second cousin vacated the post. He found out, though he was not surprised, that the COO and his date shared the same table as him and Rhiane. A polite nod and a smile were sent to the American’s way when the expatriate offered to start a small talk.

They didn’t wait long for the program to finally start. Luke went straight to reviewing his notes for the message that he came to deliver while the opening remarks was given by the Country Manager. On one hand, it was dutifully of him to come prepared. On the other hand, he wanted to avoid any conversation between him, the COO, and especially his date. But Rhiane was a different case. At one point during the speech of the Country Manager, Luke reached for her hand and entwined his fingers with hers without even looking at her face.

The opening remarks ended. Presentations about the company from its roots to where it was headed started and finished, as well as other numbers meant to entertain the guests. Luke went up the stage and made his piece about the talks of free trade, strong economic policies – especially on agriculture – and how biotechnology shaped the post-war era. He was a strong and credible speaker, who did not deviate on the topic of business. It was what he was good at, and the guests in attendance appreciated it because it was what mattered to them as well. It was in that crowd where the crown prince thrived, where no special treatment had to be made for him, because he did know what he was talking about and needed neither the rank nor the authority that came with it to push a strong message across.

When it was over, and the room exploded with applause and upbeat music, as it did with some speakers that went before him, Luke retreated back to his assigned seat. Wescott was there on his feet to meet him with a hand extended for him to shake, which Luke did for the cameras.

Rhiane had been relieved when the ceremony finally commenced. While she did not harbor a grudge towards Luke for disappearing into the crowd of wealthy attendees, she was only present at this function by his request, and there was little for her to do while he socialized. If it had not been painfully clear at the engagement ball, there was no doubt now that she was passively shunned. The crown prince was the man of true prestige and power while she had an unspoken expiration date. Not a single soul approached her at the table save the waiters and that was only because they lacked station and were obligated to treat her with proper respect. The princess elect knew this would be every formal celebration from here until her untimely death yet she had not quite anticipated doing a favor for her fiance only to have him abandon her yet again without a single thought as to her feelings on the matter. There would be discussions in the future about repayment and expectations. If she was going to be summoned either to invoke jealousy, create a political statement, or unsettle his business partners she wanted some consideration for her sacrifice.

Fortunately stoic Tobias provided her companionship. Though they spent almost the entire twenty minutes preceding the presentation in silence, his very presence was a constant reminder that all of New Rome would not snub her like Evolab's investors. The rich, famous, and titled were not the summation of the kingdom. Rebellion against Queen Camilla was proof that appeasing the elites alone would not keep a country stable and peaceful. It was his kindness of quiet support that bolstered her waning patience. Rhiane did not constant praise, she just needed someone to see her, and she needed relief from the derisive stares thinly veiled behind polite smiles.

It was when Tobias vacated his seat for Luke, who was already hyper-focused on his notes, that she started to idly wonder when she might be able to make a tactful exit. Alec Wescott would not need to converse with her further, she could only assume that whatever odd situation had arisen between Sophia and Luke was something she truly didn't want to be more involved in, and her betrothed didn't need his poorly educated arm candy any longer. Just as she was beginning to formulate a few excuses for departure two things happened consecutively: the heir to the throne took her hand and entwined their fingers and she felt a strange lurching sensation in her stomach.

At first she assumed (wrongly) that the former had compelled the latter. Heartthrob Prince Alessandro was no stranger to public displays of affection but she was. The sudden affection she doubted had anything to do with a sincere need to touch because of romantic interest, but she felt something inside her flutter regardless, and could not conceive of a way to retreat without exposing their charade. Perhaps he was trying to belatedly express gratitude for her attendance at the event. Sofia's proximity suggested this may have something to do with showing her that their 'love story' would not abate anytime soon in public. Discreetly she squirmed under the gesture and pretended her palm wasn't starting to sweat like a lovesick teenager. Rationally she ought not to be attracted to Luke beyond the physical and her dalliances with the other gender hardly made her shy in those pursuits. It was when he defaulted to a soft approach, and she was uncertain of his intentions, that she faltered and struggled.

It was when Luke rose from his seat, strode to the front of the room, and began his speech that she realized that her presumed indigestion had absolutely nothing to do with her emotional state. She did her best to be attentive, not only because he was brilliant despite his atrocious disposition, but because any inattention would negatively interpreted as a lack of support and mar their conjoined images. Rhiane had to stay planted in her chair and show devotion to his statement. Through sheer will power alone she succeeded despite feeling spasms in her throat.

The princess elect motioned under the table to Tobias. The bodyguard stiffly glided over just as Alec and Luke had finished shaking hands and bent at the waist so as to hear his charge over the applause and music. "Where is the ladies room?" she asked.

He furrowed his brow. His instincts told him there was something wrong but he did not have the latitude to ask her any sort of invasive questions; the query itself was innocent enough. "I'll escort you," he replied.

"You were wonderful," Rhiane told Luke as he moved back to his seat beside her. "I'll just be a moment. I didn't want to step away while you were still speaking," she explained but her voice sounded more strained to the ear than it had before. The former farmer painted on a pleasant expression as she bowed her head and followed Tobias in the direction of the restrooms. No one found it curious. Even the upper echelons of the court had to heed the call of nature and, to her credit, she had elected to only excuse herself when it was appropriate.

Tobias did not panic when she stepped into the lavish room and closed the door behind her. His paranoia of earlier had all but been forgotten; he had been eased into complacency when nothing happened immediately after the appetizers were consumed. What confidence he had that this was a routine emptying of the bladder or bowels- with perhaps a little cramping or digestive issues- evaporated when he heard the sound of something falling to the floor less than ten seconds after he had posted himself outside the door to the women's bathroom. To the best of his knowledge the only person inside was the princess elect and, even if she wasn't, the timing suggested it was Rhiane that had just fallen. Habitually he knocked and when there was no reflexive answer he stepped inside without a thought to appearances. The breathtaking winner of the national contest, future wife of their future king, had collapsed but was not unconscious. Beside her was vomit stained with blood.

Luke- Something is wrong with Rhiane. I think she's been poisoned, he typed out hastily before crouching down. Royalty might balk at the bodily fluids and sickly specimen he had vowed to protect but his only concern was getting her out of Evolab's headquarters as quickly as possible. Hopefully his terse message to Luke would relay the urgency of the crisis and they could formulate a plan to avoid as many spectators as possible. Not only would it be a disservice to Rhiane to let her be seen like this, psychologically she could be damaged, and that would worsen her condition.

And, if Evolab wanted to survive through the next week, they'd do everything in their power to conceal this event. The reporters' story of how Violet Black and Edwin Black had been victims of the avarice and callous indifference of both Evolab the crown had been suppressed thus far, but if Rhiane Black were to be crippled or killed here and now, the implications that the same two parties were destroying an entire family would be impossible to hide. Tobias suspected that they had been framed but there were enough skeletons in the proverbial closet that the truth of an investigation would be moot. No one would ever not believe the three deaths were linked. For everyone's sake they needed the weakened brunette laying on the floor to be whisked away and healed as discreetly as possible.

Avoiding eye contact was not as easy as he thought it would be, even when his beautiful fiancée met him with an obligatory compliment as he took his place between her and Alec Wescott. It didn’t help that the COO leaned against his elbow towards Luke and started raising questions about the trade agreements and his interpretation on how it would affect the economy of a superpower like New Rome. Not that the topic did not interest the crown prince, on the contrary the expatriate’s points were both valid and compelling, but the businessman’s spot forced Sophia into Luke’s line of vision. If they had met under different circumstances, they could have been business partners or perhaps even friends. However, the royal was still uncertain about the unprecedented betrayal of the woman he risked his very reputation for. The sentiment, unfortunately, extended to Alec Wescott.

The two men were very much engaged in their hushed discussion that Sophia was left with the dwindling wine in her glass as she listened to the host narrating a milestone of Evolab. Luke allowed himself a glance once in a while wondering if his decision was a good idea. She was the one who wanted their secret affair to stop for both their sakes, but she knew as much as he did that it was a lie. In the end, the conversation inside the anteroom ended with an argument that neither won. And even then, he agreed to, once again, try to beat the odds and meet with her after dinner. He would just have to be persuasive in raising his point to the queen.

In the middle of his explanation of the proposed tariff policy to protect the local agricultural industry, he felt the notification buzz on his wrist. Instinctively, his eyes wandered to the source of interruption. The short and informal sentence cut his short.

Poisoned?

“Is everything alright?”

Luke’s blue eyes traveled from the reassuring smile on Alec’s face to the almost finished platter of appetizer and half-filled glass of wine that the waiters had yet to retrieve. “I am not sure how to answer that. Excuse me.” He retrieved a black earpiece from his pocket, fitting it on one ear as he purposefully walked from the table. With a fluid gesture on the gadget on his wrist, he opened the encrypted communication line between him and his security team. It was designed for immediate response should an emergency happen. If possible, his personal guards, at least those who were in the venue, stood more alert. They expected trouble, but the program went on like clockwork with nothing, not even a strand of hair on the host’s wig was amiss.

“Your highness?” Confusion was apparent in the bodyguard’s voice.

“Watch the table for me,” Luke instructed. It didn’t help explain what was wrong, but none of the men would disobey a direct order from their future king. “Follow whoever will pick-up Rhiane’s glass and plate. ID the person, but do not engage. Is that clear?” Unfortunately, Tobias was not enrolled in the same frequency, but he should be now that he was assigned to Rhiane.

“Your highness, I sense that there is something wrong,” Nolan interrupted. He made a hand signal to his comrade to keep watching the table as Nolan moved to meet the prince.
“Rhiane might have been poisoned,” he whispered through the communication line. “It is too early to tell, but not at all impossible. Our priority is to get help for her discretely.”

With Nolan in tow, he turned to the alcove where he saw Rhiane and his second cousin disappear into. From the long hallway, he saw a crack on the women’s room’s door. Thankfully nobody was present in the area, not even the cleaning staff. When he pushed the door open, the scent greeted him before the unsightly scenery did. “Rhiane,” the name escaped his lips and before he was thinking straight and calling people who could help, Luke was advancing towards the barely conscious woman. The anger of being unable to foresee it happening, of being unable to protect one woman, of being vulnerable through another person, vanished at the sight of the feisty farmer defeated by whatever poison she had ingested. He realized then that all she had shown him was the formidable strength of a woman, even after facing cold weather, or injury. To see her in that state made him feel something else other than anger.

“You can’t.” Nolan stood on his way, blocking his path and shaking him awake. “I’m sorry, but you can’t take a step closer, your highness.”

“He’s right,” added Tobias. “The poison can be anything at this point, even a biochemical weapon. Therefore, you are advised to keep distance, your highness.”

Of course. His life was more precious than the farmer’s. She was dispensable, a vessel that they would throw away once her purpose was served. If she died, it would be a challenge to arrange for another nationwide search, but it was not impossible. Luke composed himself, but did not comment. Instead, he switched to the commercial networks and dialed Sophia. It took three rings, but the actress picked the phone up. “Sophie, give the phone to Wescott.”

“Alec?” She was whispering on the handset. “Seriously? Luke, you were just talking to my boyfriend.”

Luke sighed. The more minutes they spent, more risk was injected into the princess elect’s situation. “Sophie, please. I have no time for this. Just pass the damn phone.”

“Prince Alessandro, you asked for me?” If confusion could be heard, he heard it clearly from the COO’s voice. Not five minutes ago, the two gentlemen were having a fine conversation, then the prince walked out on him and now he was calling the COO with urgency.

Luke explained the situation in the briefest possible manner. Alec, afraid of the ghosts that haunted the company, promised to cooperate and lend one of the company’s hovercrafts on the fourteenth floor gate. He explained that there was an exit in the anteroom that led to a lobby. Nobody should bother them should they choose that route because it was a company holiday. The building, save for the locations that was part of the itinerary, was practically empty.

“Rhiane, if you can hear me,” Luke said, after he explained the plan to both Nolan and Tobias. “Don’t worry, you will be fine. Dr. Gulsvig will take care of you and I’ll be with you as soon as I can.” He nodded at the bodyguards, watched Tobias’ back as he carried the princess elect in his arms.

After she violently heaved out the contents of her stomach and crashed onto the floor Rhiane was conscious but not quite aware of her surroundings. It took a painful amount of effort to recognize Tobias's face hovering over hers as he slid her backwards and gently inspected the damage to her shoulder (as it had absorbed the impact of her fall). Disoriented and slightly delusional she swore she heard Luke's voice although she couldn't understand at first how he knew where she was or what had happened. Her mind kept failing to connect the dots and instead focused on inane things like how they were invading the women's bathroom and were men, or how her throat hurt, or how she really disliked the coral hue painted on the walls. Her so brain was overloaded with the sudden bombardment of external and internal stimuli, it had blocked out the majority of her sensory perception, and thus she was blissfully unaware of the gravity of the situation for the moment.

"Sorry," she heard herself say though her speech was slightly inhibited by a tongue that was reluctant to form coherent words. This evidently was not what Tobias expected her to say and he narrowed his eyes in response. The newly appointed bodyguard of the princess elect was so worried she understood it through the haze caused by poison coursing through her veins. To Rhiane it was only natural she apologize for making a mess on the floor even if it was unintentional. Any sane individual, however, that realized their very life was in jeopardy would not be worrying themselves over the sight of vomit. No one yet knew if she had been given a lethal dose of a toxic substance.

"I'll keep you updated on her condition," Tobias promised as he scooped the former farmer up into his arms and lifted her from the ground.

Rhiane was staring after Luke as she belatedly started to realize something was very wrong for him to be reassuring her that she would be 'fine' and 'Dr. Gulsvig' would be taking care of her. Her fiance was showing more emotion than she was accustomed to seeing and it was so bizarre, and so sincere, she could not conceive of objecting to the course of action even if meant confronting a major source of anxiety. Later Luke could see this as the victory it truly was. She was the most vulnerable he had seen her and yet she trusted him implicitly. Arguably she had more reasons not to put her faith in him than to be so simply persuaded he had her best interests at heart but they did not so much as make it to the surface of her mind.

With time of the essence, Tobias, after making certain he had a good grip on his charge, started to jog down the corridor and towards the elevator that would lead them to the fourteenth floor where a hovercraft was waiting for them. Rhiane's eyes had closed once they were out of sight of the crown prince. The relative-by-birth to the crown spread his lips in a thin line as he waited for the lift to jettison them to the correct level of the building. It was more likely to be a benign correlation than a sign of causation, though he had to admit the onset of this illness was so abrupt it made him suspicious she had been unwell sooner than when she had waved him over for bathroom directions, and there was only one person she might suppress symptoms for. In his opinion Luke was not worthy of such consideration. Sofia was the reason that Rhiane had been brought here. She had unknowingly put herself at great risk, yet the caged woman had made every concession for her titled paramour, even when he ignored her and favored another given the opportunity.

"Ms. Black has lost consciousness," he advised as he stepped out of the elevator and continued on his path. With his accelerated pace it took him longer to read the signs than to reach the gate. "No loss of breath or cardiac arrest. Proceeding into the hovercraft. We will wait until we're a respectable distance from Evolab HQ before calling for a blockade."

Just as he was about to board the hovercraft Rhiane jerked back awake and, pitching slightly to side, threw up for a second time. Most of the ejected bodily fluid was bile but there was more blood and half-digested food as well, some of which he deduced might have been from their untainted luncheon. It was a good sign. That she was retching meant that her body had not given up on purging itself of the poison. The less that was trapped in her stomach the less likelihood she would be spending the rest of the night in intensive care and recovery. Tobias allowed himself to let out a sigh of relief as she sagged in his harms and started to either doze or lose consciousness again.

"Gate on Level 14 will need a biohazard team to clean up," he remarked wryly as he climbed into the hovercraft. Instead of trying to sit up the dead weight he laid her on her side, facing her outwards in case there was an encore of regurgitation, and buckled her in to the best of her ability. It was not optimal but Evolab was not prepared to deal with a VIP guest requiring discreet emergency transportation in the middle of a business event she had not been explicitly invited to. Rhiane was secure enough to survive the journey that would be made exponentially shorter with Queen Camilla herself likely to shut down every ounce of traffic that could lead to scandalous tragedy.

In several occasions of a royal’s life, he or she would undergo immunotherapy for known poisons. Thanks to dedicated toxicology researches, it was made possible to strengthen and train the human immune system such that it was able to effectively eliminate these identified threats to the human body. It was not always a pleasant procedure, but it was a valuable breakthrough in the medical field that eliminated the need for a food tester while at the same time minimizing the exposure of the kingdom’s leaders to risks of death through poison.

The procedure was not exclusive to the royal family though. It was available to anybody who had pockets deep enough to fund the steep prices that specialized doctors and hospitals charged. Unfortunately, Rhiane neither had the money nor the status. It was probably part of the plan that she would be placed under the same program, but the urgent need to project a positive image had pushed the princess elect’s health aside in favor for the newly engaged couple’s trip around the kingdom. It was only that afternoon after he saw her prone form on the bathroom floor that Luke realized how vulnerable the woman was. He couldn’t shake the image off his head, couldn’t bring himself to stop thinking about the possibility of hearing bad news from his second cousin who had promised to update him about the farmer’s status. Even as he took his place among the elite to pretend that everything was in order, the crown prince kept checking his communication band for any other updates.

The platter and glass were already cleared off the table when he returned.

Alec, noticing the visible restlessness on the royal’s fine features, leaned his body slightly towards the other man. “You don’t have to stay, your highness. I can ask other senior officers, or even Lord Castilliogne, your uncle, to give the awards.”

Luke shook his head. Sophia had not uttered a word since he claimed back his seat. “I appreciate your offer, but I am protecting Rhiane by being here. I will not allow whoever is behind that cowardly act an ounce of triumph by admitting that they have achieved their goal to hurt either me or my mother via Rhiane.” A person at the top of the hierarchy of power always had the greatest number of enemies. The rebellion was what the common people was most familiar with, but beneath the pretense of friendship and loyalty among the aristocracy was a constant power struggle. To blame the attack on the rebellion would have been the safest course of action if it would not raise panic among the citizens of the capital. But panic would often translate to loss in confidence, and loss in confidence would often lead to a revolution. On the other hand, the same organization being honored that afternoon could be the propagator of the scheme. The appetizers and wine were served by them anyway. Besides, Evolab was a biotechnology company. “I will leave after the awarding ceremony, but this incident will not end after I step out of the building. Whatever happens to the princess elect, the crown expects Evolab to cooperate in the investigation that will follow. Every camera footage, every supplier for this evening, every invitation sent to your guests – it will be asked from you and you shall comply.”

“I will personally ensure the cooperation of my people within legal bounds, of course.”

True to his word, Luke only stayed long enough to hand out the awards for exceptional employees, among other things. He managed to keep a pleasant smile for the cameras, but truthfully, he was not paying attention to most of what was said during the event. Instead, he was listening to the exchange between the traffic command, his security team, and most importantly Tobias. Even Sophia, who offered him wine that she secured from one of the waiters and asked him to stay, was declined.

When he said that she was admitted into the medical facility, the crown prince sighed audibly. Tobias and Nolan, who came back to the castle with her, were placed on quarantine for their own sakes. It was six in the evening. Shadows had fallen on the main roads of capital, dispelled only by the street lights and the headlights of the passing cars. Luke could not bring himself to check his mails as was his habit. The queen had checked in on him more than twice since the incident was reported to her. He assured her that he was fine, that he thought Rhiane was the target and not himself, and that it was unnecessary to deploy more people from the royal guards. Queen Camilla did the latter despite her son’s reassurances.

With the help of a faster mode of transport via a hovercraft, it took less than an hour for Luke to be able to make it back to the castle. He went straight to the medical tower where he guessed Rhiane was being treated. Callista was there, wearing casual jeans and a plain shirt, looking more like a commoner than a princess. She sat on one of the benches, but hastily ran to her brother as soon as she saw him.

“Any news?”

The princess shook her head. “I heard what happened from mother. They have been in there since I got here.”

Just then, a message stole Luke's attention. Thinking it might be an update regarding the investigation, he quickly opened it.

Will I see you tonight?

Elena Villani was one of the most brilliant specialists in the field of medical toxicology. While Dr. Gulsvig was by no means intellectually challenged in any way, Elena had been summoned for her expertise, and had been working in tandem to get a diagnosis as quickly as possible- even before she landed at the castle. Her background was upper middle class rather than actual nobility which made consultations with physicians in more rural areas smoother. When working with the top tier of the social strata, however, she had earned their praise with hard work, discretion, and a no-nonsense attitude that focused exclusively on the poisoning rather than the scandalous events that led to contamination. It was hardly a surprise that Queen Camilla had summoned her. Were Rhiane to take a turn for the worse they would be in a predicament that would take years to climb back from, if ever, and she wanted to use the resources available within reason so as to keep the outcome in her favor.

"Your highnesses," Elena sighed as she strode out of two thick frosted glass automated sliding doors. The staff that had been allowed inside the portion of the clinic where the princess elected had been carried were initially in suits that were hermetically sealed and had attached oxygen packs for respiration. This had been a precaution. Once they realized the nature of the materials they were working in they had all changed. The doctor wore surgical scrubs in a plain vanilla color, blue latex gloves she was actively peeling off her hands, and a face mask. Both the prince and princess might correctly deduce the change in uniform was indicative of the fact that Rhiane's condition was not as contagious as initially feared. Once her gloves had been pried off Elena took off her mask and ran her hand through her hair.

"Dr. Gulsvig is making the report to the queen. Mrs. Black is no longer in critical condition and is conscious. From what Mr. Lavanchy tells me, she didn't eat the entirety of her plate of appetizers nor did she drink all of her wine at the business function she attended. In my professional opinion that is what saved her life. What she ingested was so concentrated that if she had eaten all of it we would be having a very different conversation." She realized that this information was not what they wanted to hear but they needed to be aware of the reality of the situation. Trying to soften the blow could create misunderstandings and she was not going to jeopardize meeting any of the monarchy's relatives under even worse conditions.

"There were two poisons utilized and they were both ingested, so Mrs. Black is a bit uncomfortable, but not a danger to anyone else's health. One of the poisons is flavorless and is typically used in powder form so it could have been in either her food or drink. The other, which was so caustic to her upper digestive tract, would have a bitter aftertaste, but Mrs. Black might not have noticed if she didn't know what the things she ate ought to have tasted like. It's because of this I don't think we'll see anyone else reporting her symptoms. If the other attendees were more familiar with the offerings, which I am told they were, they wouldn't overlook the difference in taste."

Elena was not a detective so she shied away from outright concluding that Rhiane was specifically targeted or that the perpetrator was themselves a novice. If she was asked her opinion she would say she thought it was a crime of opportunity that was poorly conceived. Someone with a more targeted education, or at least a wider base of knowledge, wouldn't have used something that affected flavor, nor would they have failed to anticipate Rhiane vomiting half of the poison. Hopefully those with positions of authority would deduce it was not just fortuitous that the toxins hadn't stewed longer in their victim and that would help narrow their suspect pool.

"If I may say so your highness, your fiancee is a resilient woman. She purged a great deal of the poisons before she was rushed here and she's reacting well to the medication. There is some temporary damage to her esophagus and stomach, so she'll want to avoid overly hot, spicy, or cold food until that heals, but she shouldn't have any long-lasting effects. I'd like to make a couple suggestions that Dr. Gulsvig is making to the queen. Because Ms. Black's immune system is compromised, we're delaying introducing any vaccinations or anti-toxins until we're sure she's prepared for it, so although she'll be walking and talking like normal, that particular program has been postponed for her safety. There is a difference before well enough to be in public and resume normal activities and well enough to undergo preventative measures that rely on a robust immune system. This means she'll still be susceptible to poisons so she should refrain from eating alone. If possible meals should be ordered as a group, so the least amount of people possible know what she is personally eating until it's on the table, and if that's not possible you may want to order separately for one another and then exchange."

"Now, I'm sure you have questions. Would you like to see her? We thought to leave the decision of where she would sleep tonight up to the queen and yourselves. Ms. Black is stable and... quite vocal about her displeasure being in the medical tower," Elena admitted with a bemused expression. It was the nicest way to allude to the fact that the former farmer absolutely loathed being isolated and contained in a place where the only faces she saw were those of the medical vocation she harbored intense distrust. When she had first awoken she was deliriously apologizing for everything but once she achieved more mental clarity she had become incredibly upset with her surroundings. The two doctors had built a fledgling rapport but the trauma of eight years ago could not be undone so simply. Truthfully Elena did not blame the younger woman for her beliefs- though she was frustrated a lack of cooperation had initially hampered their progress. Tobias Lavanchy had been more useful than their patient herself.
