Lexicon
This is an interest check to see if anyone would fancy a slightly altered version of a game called Lexicon, invented by Neel Krishnaswami back in 2003. I am looking for around 4-5 players to start but would always welcome new players. The game would be played in rounds with turns open for about a week. I propose a slightly modified version of the original premise coupled with elements of another 'world-building' RPG called Microscope by Ben Robbins.
Essentially anyone could play this game and might actually benefit from a rotating roster of players. We would take on the roles of scholars and create a fictional encyclopedia detailing a particular era of a fictional world. The original game was a bit tedious, and ideally is hosted on a wiki site. My experience from the one game I hosted many years ago was that eventually the massive amount of lore and history becomes insane to manage. My goal is to simplify the rules and make it easier to host on a regular forum.
From the web:
"The basic idea of a Lexicon Game is that each player takes on the role of a scholar, from before scholarly pursuits became professionalized (or possibly after they ceased to be). You are cranky, opinionated, prejudiced and eccentric. You are also collaborating with a number of your peers - the other players - on the construction of an encyclopedia."
In the original rules, the GM or host was supposed to come up with a setting seed for players to build off of. I wanted to include elements of the Microscope rules to help streamline that process.
Initially we would come up with a theme or setting seed collectively, and vote on our favorite. The next step would be to 'bookend' the setting by clearly defining the start and end of the particular era of history the encyclopedia would chronicle. It could be anything from a magitech fantasy setting to a hard science fiction universe. Then there would be a round of yes's and no's. Players would have a chance to say what they want in the game and absolutely do not.
I've left out so much so feel free to ask whatever questions you might have! Hope this get's some interest!
