Midsummer's Eve

Midsummer’s Eve is a wonderful time in Scandinavia. It is a time of celebration, a time for family, and some fun. Earlier in the day at the church, some of the children were confirmed in their faith. Not many any more but some family cling to the faith, out of stubborn determination. The rest of the world may have turned back to the old ways, but stubbornly they would cling to it is the Finnish way. Though many of them would not be back to the church till they were to marry, have children baptized, or for a funeral. With Trolls around and the threat of the Rash, Addi though everyone would be praying at some point. She didn’t see the need to go sit in a building to do that. Around the village, there were parties with herring, salted fish, fresh berries, and other sweet treats. The spring had been good and they had managed to protect much of the crops and wild berries. So they would celebrate. When the rash hit, her family fled south to a relative’s summer cottage and this is where they settled. The little community thrives due to the resources needed of the larger settlements. Things like wood, scrap metal, crops, animals, and black market goods (talismans, books, and weapons) are always in demand and pay well.

Addi smiled as she passed her little sister Liljá. Lilljá had started to bread cats for the community and for the trainers. Addi had jokingly called her a crazy cat girl. Addi wasn’t a big fan of cats. But her sister’s cats liked her and Addi knew the necessity of their protection.

As she stopped in her walk at the village center, she greeted people and smiled at pot of coffee was roasting on the fire. Coffee was near priceless as the areas that grew it had been lost in the rash. She had managed to make a couple connections and they had smuggled in. The elders would upset if they knew how much that cost. With a cup in her hand, the contents as thick as road tar. She continued on. She had even got ice cream, a treat hard to come by at Midsummer when you do not have electricity. The ice cream had to be crated and packed in ice. But it was freshly made with raspberries and strawberries. She had enjoyed herself, having two bowls of it with the hot coffee. Happily leaving both for a little girl to clean up, getting a nod of appreciation for the sweets as approval.

Years ago, after the celebration, a girl would have been out in the meadows picking flowers for her hair and making sure she had nine wildflowers for under her pillow. The telling states that a girl who does this will dream of the man she would marry. Addi smiled as the girls picked wild flowers around the island. It was a good dream to believe in. Her love had died at the hands of a troll. She still dreams of him at Midsummer’s Eve, along with the wild and vivid dreams of the spirits that filled the place. She, like her mother, was shamanic in her thinking. Spirits were everywhere, the woods, water, air, and trees. She had grown fond of the spirits. Some spirits were helpful – helping protect the crops, some were slow – like the rock spirits, others were playful like the water or flighty like the air.

Addi wore no flowers in her hair. She tugged her red scarf over the red outfit she wore with colorful blue and gold braids and round buttons. She had soft deer hide leather boots lined with fur. Her first deer bone knife was on her belt under her cloak at her side and a modern knife was tucked into her boot. She continued to walk out of the village towards edge of the woods to the comments of a couple of her peers, with their children being carried in their arms. She ignored them. She too would have had a child if her love hadn’t died protecting the village. She walked carrying a wood flute and a kantele in a pack to one of the islands docks where she got into a small row boat with a couple boys who rowed her to mainland. As they went about scavenging and playing, she walked to a birch grove and sat down to make music.

One of the things that Addi enjoys, almost to the point of taking pride in, is singing and playing music. She had been learning to pluck the strings since she was a little child learning from her grandmother, mother, aunts and music teachers. But she didn’t sing or play music for anyone’s praise, she hated the attention. The music was her way to channel the magic, call the spirits, or think. It was how she paid her respects to the spirits of the woods, her ancestors, and to Elias the young man who had loved her and died saving her and the village.

She sat down and played, no words were needed. The magic would help, but she wondered if Mielikki could heal a broken heart. When she saw the bear sow enter the grove, she sat still continuing to pluck the strings. ”Nalle neitoseni,” she cooed then gently sung of how the bears cubs would play in the grove and catch fish in waters of the streams. She would be the mother and Addi would be the god mother for her cubs when they came.

As the young men started to call for her so they could go back, she rose and thanked the spirits and headed back.

Leaving the island

A time later, the elders decided to send Addi out. People had come with the traders looking for people to go on an adventure one that could be profitable. Addi being single, was chosen to be sent out. When she was told, the elders said that she had a good head on her shoulders knew what needed to be done. So, she did her duty. She packed the little bit of stuff she had. Some basic tools and boarded a boat. She waited till she was out of sight to cry a little, knowing she might not come back.
