Jarvaazim

Male | 30 | Nationality unknown

Appearance:
Standing at 6'7 this guy is hard to miss. He leads a very active lifestyle with a lot of physical activity, and during quiet periods where there isn’t a lot of fighting to be had, he works out to ensure he remains as fit and capable as possible. As a result he looks the part, which just adds to his already intimidating appearance. Exactly how he prefers it.

His hair is off-white in color and kept in long messy dreadlocks. They’re tied back in a sort of low hanging bun, with the ends trailing down his back. He rarely goes anywhere without his bandanna, because it keeps it all out of his face. He has some golden clips tied in here and there, and he keeps two long rooster tail feathers sticking out of the bun as decoration.

The red on his face is not true qunari vitaar, just waterproof face paint meant to resemble it, and aside from the usual scars gained from fighting, the most noticeable ones only show when he takes his coat off; his entire back is one giant mess of old whipping scars. They don’t bother him much, they were gotten over a decade ago and while he doesn’t go out of his way to hide them, he has no interest in showing them off either. He doesn’t particularly mind if they come up in conversation though, and depending on how he’s asked, he might share the story.

Class — Rogue (pirate):
Jarvaazim dual wields a sword and dagger combination. His style can’t be pointed down to a specific specialization, because he simply fights dirty. Whatever gets the job done, no matter how low or vicious or brutal - he has literally torn out someone’s throat with his teeth once. There is no such thing as a clean fight and the enemy will never hold back, so neither will he.

Background:
Jarvaazim was born outside of the Qun to traveling Tal-Vashoth parents he only vaguely remembers. When he was seven the family was captured by slavers near the Tevinter border and Jarvaazim was sold to a man named Aulus Numonis, a Tevinter merchant who sought more able-bodied slaves for physical labor upon his own merchant vessel. Captain Numonis didn’t only transport goods to sell in Tevinter, Rivain and Antiva, he also transported slaves back to the Tevinter markets.

As Jarvaazim got older he developed a need to look out for the other slaves, especially the children. He was bigger, stronger and more capable of taking a beating than they were; he would take their punishment if given the chance, because he would rather face the wrath of the slavers himself if it saved an elven girl from rape, or a boy from being beaten within an inch of his life for no reason. It was this stubborn attitude and propensity to be mouthy when he shouldn’t be that often got him into trouble with Numonis, who saw in him an easy scape-goat to unleash his frustrations on - he still bears the physical scars of these encounters.

At age 22 he led a successful mutiny and took over as captain with the support of his new-found crew of ex-slaves.

It was a hard and difficult life, one he looks back on with very mixed feelings. He met some of the most important peope in his life on that ship and it ultimately paved the way to a way of living he would not give up for anything… but the life under a slave master’s thumb and whip isn’t a life he would wish onto anyone.

Personality:
Jarvaazim is a natural born leader. He doesn’t like it when his authority is challenged or when his orders aren’t followed. He cares little for authoritative bodies like the Imperial and the Southern Chantry, nor does he care much for rules. He, and his crew, follow their own code. It works for them and it keeps them safe, and your opinion doesn't matter much to him.

He greatly values personal freedom and he will do anything to keep it, not just for himself but also for those he cares about. He has a big protective streak towards his crew and the slaves he helps liberate - due to his background he is very anti-slavery, he has good connections to the Tevinter Underground and he’s all too willing to take escaped slaves on board to help them get away from Tevinter to build a new life elsewhere, usually in Antiva or Rivain. Occasionally he will do the same for Southern mages trying to escape the Templars, because what happens to them in the Circles is no better than slavery.

Generally a very open-minded person, your race, gender, preferred religion or class don't matter to him at all, so long as you pull your own weight, share a common ideal and follow orders. His crew is a mish-mash of different nationalities, races and backgrounds.

But Tevinter is where his tolerance ends, and they have no fondness for him either. There's quite the price on his head.

At first glance Jarvaazim seems like someone with a harsh exterior; he acts like a loose cannon and he looks intimidating (and he knows it). He’s surprisingly good with kids though; he loves stories, especially when he’s the one telling them and children make for the best audience. He appreciates a good sense of humor and he enjoys fun company, sharing a drink and playing cards.

He’s trustworthy as far as pirates go, but a promise is a promise and he will stick to it. But he’s also greedy and has gained profit over the backs of innocents before without feeling bad about it. Smuggling is something he takes great interest in.
