Dirk Garther

Movement out in the fog caught Dirk's eye. He held up a hand to Val and Ferd, cutting their discussion short. He brought his hand to his mouth and lifted a finger, as he slipped around the two of them to get a better look. Yep it was a car, pulling up to Jeremy's house from the other side of the street. It didn't look like a cop car, and he didn't think it belonged to any illegal groups he knew. Being new to Arkham himself it was hard to tell sometimes. A posh looking man in a derby stepped out of the car as it puttered into silence. Was that... a Negro? Huh. Not anyone Dirk recognized, but there had been a black man amongst the recipients of Jeremy's letters.

The man called up to the house in a professional, yet loud holler. Jeremy? If that was Alonzo he ought to know Jeremy was missing. Why was he trying to make a house call. Dirk motioned to the two behind him that they shouldn't follow him, and he whipped out his police badge again, making his way to meet Alonzo.

"I'm sorry to disappoint you sir but Jeremy isn't home right now." Dirk brandished his badge like a shield, deflecting suspicion and hopefully resistance, off of it. "If your Dr. Alonzo Scott then I presume you received a letter from a Mr. Harry Everfield asking you to come to his aid?" Dirk put his badge down as he stepped up on to the porch ahead of the Dr. "Is that correct?" Dirk asked pointedly.

Just then he heard a voice from within the house and turned to see who had made it. There was a man who had just begun descending the stairs. He looked familiar... But why?

Then it clicked. "Richard? Is that you? Of course! Harry sent you a letter to! I didn't think you'd come though!" Relief was evident in Dirk's voice. Richard was an old acquaintance from Richards police days. They'd worked the same city, but different precincts. He had made a good cop, and by all accounts was an even better PI. "You might not remember me, names Dirk Garther, I was a green private when you where wrapping up your time in the blues! I heard a lot of good things about you! I gotta say I'm glad to see you, I could really use your help on this case!" At this point Dirk was full facing Richard, having forgotten Alonzo in his excitement. Finally! A law man from outside Arkham! Now they could get some work done!

"I'm sorry to disappoint you sir but Jeremy isn't home right now." Dirk brandished his badge like a shield, deflecting suspicion and hopefully resistance, off of it.

At first Dr Scott was taken aback in this fashion but his nerves came down after seeing a police badge being shown.

"If your Dr. Alonzo Scott then I presume you received a letter from a Mr. Harry Everfield asking you to come to his aid?"

“Yes, that is absolutely correct Officer”.

Dirk put his badge down as he stepped up on to the porch ahead of the Dr. "Is that correct?" Dirk asked pointedly.

Alonzo was about to speak a bit more but then...

"Richard? Is that you? Of course! Harry sent you a letter to! I didn't think you'd come through!" Relief was evident in Dirk's voice.

“Case?.... As in closed or open.. And is Jeremy no longer among the living?” Dr Scoot interjected as the two began to chat it up.

“ Well since he isn’t here, I could leave my hotel and room number till he gets back, I’m sorry to meet you fine gentlemen under these strange times”. Alonzo reopened his black umbrella, carried by his grey leather driving gloves, and turn to begin to walk away and leave the police to their business. “ Gentlemen, does it rain like this all the time? I guess its kinda like Seattle Washington but without the coastal air... Strange times, indeed”. Tipping his hat proceeds to lave the officers to their duties.

Dirk turned and raised an eyebrow at the Doctor's question, "Open. If you'd read the letter you allegedly received you would have known that. You also would have known Jeremy has been missing for over two years." Perplexed now Dirk asked, "You did read the letter didn't you?"

Dirk was a bit confused, where on earth did this daft man think he was going. Dirk had never bought into all the talk about Negros, but this fella was bringing a few choice sayings to mind.

"Woah woah woah Doc, I don't know where you think your going but I'm going to have to ask you to stick around for a bit." Dirk waved Ferd and Val over, before continuing, "Listen I don't know what you all expected to find when you got here but this isn't a Sunday trip down to good ole Gramps house." He took a step away from the center of the door frame so he could see all four men. "I assumed that if anyone did respond to Mr. Everfield's letters, and ended up in Arkham, they'd have come either expecting a mad man or an open investigation."

Dirk pulled his jacket tighter around himself and straightened his umbrella. "And Doc yes it rains all the time. It hasn't stopped raining in over two years." Dirk squinted at the black man, "Another thing you'd have known had you actually received or read one of the letters sent out by Mr. Everfield." Come to think of it, Harry had called the people who broke into the house, 'shadowy'. Prejudice aside, shadowy could certainly apply to a black man. But no that didn't fit. Why would he have come up to the house pretending to be one of the letter recipients, but appear to have no real knowledge of the contents? Beyond that he'd approached with a crowd around. No reason for one of Harry's killers to be that bold and suddenly turn take and run.

He decided to stop theorizing for the time being. These men weren't suspects or really witnesses, but they were leads. And God knew leads were what Dirk Garther needed.

"Alright listen up gents, I know your all likely wanting to get out of the rain, and you all likely have some questions that I can answer. The feeling is mutual." He said with a shiver, "I'd make this sound more polite but I get the distinct feeling I need to be expressly clear. I'm going to have to ask all four of you to come with me to the local police precinct. I need to ask you some questions."

Dirk waited for his words to sink in before he began walking back towards the corner he'd been standing at for the last few hours. He turned and walked back wards for a bit so he could see if everyone was following or not, "And if anyone's having any ideas about not accompanying me, you ought to know that the gentleman who wrote to you all is dead." He paused for dramatic effect, "This is an ongoing homicide investigation." With that Dirk walked to the street corner, turned right, walked for a couple of blocks, took a left, walked for another block, and finally stopped at the undercover police cruiser he'd used to get here.

He waited for everyone to catch up before telling them all to pile in. Time to see if he could get a lead in this unsolvable case.

With a sigh, Alonzo then admits... "Well, I just read it quickly and got the address, I figured that scene it wasn't a telegram that it wasn't really that much of concern at the time". Stepping back onto the porch, placing his umbrella down, after giving it a few shakes, he pats his peacoat, then reaches in to a already torn letter, " Yes, here it is...". Dr. Scoot then walks over to the bench on the porch to sit and this time, re-read the details of the letter.

" Yes, anything to assist you, officer, is fine with me" Dr. Scott replies.

" Would you mind if I drove myself?, I'd rather not leave my only way to getting around town here, if that is okay with you." Dr. Scott ask politely

Dr. Scott gathered his umbrella, Doctor's bag, and will follow the officer to the police station as requested.

He waited for everyone to catch up before telling them all to pile in, asking Richard to sit in the front with him. Dirk couldn't believe the relief he was still feeling after having discovered Richards presence. He sorely needed some sort of partner in this case. This unsolvable case.

Ferd Smith

Ferd blinked in surprise at Garther's hand being raised. What was wrong? As he walked off, Ferd followed with his eyes, opening his mouth to say something, only to be hushed by Garther's preemptive finger to his lips. Ferd pouted for a moment. He didn't care much for being hushed, especially when he felt left out. The disgruntlement was brief however, as his eyes picked out the movement of what had to be headlights, and his ears finally registered the sound of the Roadster grumbling along the road. Well now, what was this?

Ferd moved to follow Dirk, but thought better of it. The officer was clearly attempting to approach unnoticed, and Ferd knew all to well that two people were much more likely to be noticed than one. Speaking of which, Ferd noted that the copper seemed to be very good at sneaking around. Ferd had nearly lost sight of him as he moved stealthily through the fog. Impressive.

It wasn't long before Garther abandoned his attempts at stealth and called out to the man who had just climbed out of the Roadster. Apparently satisfied making his presence known to the man would be no great detriment to himself, Garther walked boldly up to the man, blocking his path into the house. Ferd could only just make out bits of the conversation from where he was, but the fog muffled a good deal of it at this distance. He really wanted to get closer, but Garther hadn't given them any indication as to whether or not he cared if they moved now. Ah screw it. Ferd knew how to be quiet, and besides the stranger was clearly preoccupied with Dirk.

Ferd began approaching slowly, taking care to appear casual should anyone notice he was approaching. He began catching snipets of conversation again.

"I can leave my hotel room..."

"Letter you allegedly received..."

Ah so this man claimed to have received a letter as well. Why was he trying to leave though?

In the middle of Ferd's eaves dropping Officer Garther turned and waved in his direction. Finally! Ferd turned and motioned for Val to follow, since he wasn't sure he could see the cop waving through the fog and then jogged over to join the others. As he approached Ferd noticed something peculiar. James and Ambrose were nowhere to be seen. He hadn't noticed anyone leaving when he and Val had, though it was possible it was as simple as that, he just hadn't noticed. But still, something felt... off.

Dirk had begun speaking, and he didn't give the impression this was a discussion. Ferd felt a bit confused when he talked about the black fella who had drove up in the Roadster. He didn't know about Harry and Jeremy? That seemed odd. Before Ferd could really gather his thoughts though, Garther had brushed past him umbrella in hand, and was instructing them all to follow him. Ferd froze in place for a moment. This was rather sudden wasn't it? As he turned to follow Dirk, Ferd looked at the other three men and shrugged.

"Well you heard the man. Sounds like we're some sort of witnesses to this crime now." Just a moment later Dirk turned and revealed the nature of the crime he was investigating and Ferd's heart sank. Yeah. He'd expected Harry was dead. Still, expecting it didn't soften the blow. Yet another life snuffed out by the weird forces Ferd had dedicated his life to understanding. He grit his teeth and trudged along behind Dirk silently for a while. He'd set out to prevent any more disappearances, but he hadn't actually solved a single case, he was no closer to understanding what was causing all of these things, and even worse he was beginning to lose hope. The clues were always to vague, his leads constantly disappeared in thin air, even when they were extremely solid ones. He'd once tracked down an entire cult which he was certain was to blame for multiple grotesque murders in a small town in Indiana. But when he went to snoop around the place he was certain was their hide out, it had simply vanished before his eyes. He'd never picked the trail back up. Feeling a bit sulky Ferd put on his best cheerful act. He didn't need people asking why he was down in the dumps. They'd never believe him anyway.

As he climbed into the cop car he thought to himself where have James and Ambrose gotten off to? Hopefully they had left a note. Ferd glanced over at Richard, wondering if he knew where they were. But it looked like Garther was trying to talk to him, Ferd decided to wait until later to inquire about the two. Perhaps they'd track down some clues of their own in the mean time. Hah. Right.

Dirk turned at the Doctors request to drive himself. He was already following Dirk, so the cop made a quick decision. If he let the man get in his car now, Dirk had no way to catch him if he just took off. Simple then.

Your welcome to drive your own car, but I'll have to ask you to come with me to mine first. I'll drop you and whoever owns the other vehicle off after that if you want. If you'd like I can also have a couple of officers swing by and pick your rides up." Dirk shrugged, "Your choice. Either way I still need you to follow me first."

Richard Barker

Silence. Utter and desolute silence permiated Richard's senses as he looked down the stairs again, after having taking a brief look earlier. At first he had thought he caught the sight of the two members left down in the hallway, shouting down at them something about what the suckers outside were shouting about, what he himself found upstairs and their opinions on the newly-found box. But as he took a second look down the staircase, his brows raised far up his face and jaw dropped slightly, almost losing the cigarette in the process.

Where the fuck had they gone?

"Uhm…fellas? Anderson, Ambroise? Ah chucks, they left me high and dry…" Richard muttered to himself under his breath, seeing himself alone in the house that desperately needed a new paint stroke. Or rather, it needed to be demolished and rebuilt by some proper labourers. Richard sighed, putting the box down at his feet as he took off his fedora, running his hand through his greasy hair and putting the hat back on. Well, if he was alone, at least no one could put their nose in his business.

Sitting down onto the stairs, Richard began fiddling with the clues he had found so far, the cigarette dangling back and forth in his mouth like the weight on a grandfather's clock would. A box, an alarm clock and a piece of paper. Nearly a complete paper trail. Aha, Richard would 'never' get tired of chasing paper around…yeah right, like he was a pencil pusher.

First of all, the paper then. Opening it, Richard was unsure what he saw imprinted on the faded paper. "What do we have here…looks like an inkdot…octopus?" Richard questioned himself, wondering just what the imprint was and what it was made of. Charcoal? It only put forward more questions than it answered.

Second was the clock, odd as it was. Why had Jeremy, or this "Harry" have it hidden underneath the bed? Richard toyed with it for a moment, lifting it up and rattling it ever so slightly. Rattling, and not just the sound of a broken clock. Something big was hidded inside. Richard pulled out his set of lockpicks, choosing a thick screwdriver-looking tool and catching the edge of the clock's backside. Eventually, perhaps after a few minutes of fiddling, he got it off, revealing the clock's contents. A key. "Oh let me guess, this is the Key to this puzzle? Ha…ha…real funny, Jeremy, you absolute clown…"

Richard, not being amused at all by the bullshittery that was occupying his day, decided to check the chest and get over with it. He had a hell of a lot of questions to have his mind ponder over, and too many questions popping up for him to process alone. The chest was fair enough to lockpick open, only taking him another five minutes or so. Inside he found…yet more paper - A journal. Quickly turning the pages and only getting glimpses of its contents, Richard got an eire feeling in his stomach, one that had in reality been there since he first looked at the imprint on the paper and the hidded key. Something bad, something dark…like when he knew he was stepping into a bad alleyway, and someone wasn't walking out alive.

"Jesus Christ in a handbasket, I need a coffee…and Irish coffee, whiskey and secterian split and all…" Richard muttered angrily, wearily under his breath, tucking the journal inside his jacket alongside the other pieces of evidence he'd picked up. Something about those things sent a shiver down his spine, or perhaps it was the moldy interiour that got to him. Whatever it was, Richard decided to exit the house after what had felt like an hour on the inside snooping around.

He did not expect the welcoming-comittee he was greeted with.

"Of all the rain-soaked dead-end holes I wander into, and I'm greeted by you?" Richard exclaimed as he heard him being shouted at, squinting his eyes underneath that brown fedora as he realized who was talking to him. Dirk Garther, fellow former NYPD beatcop and equally miserable son of a bitch. "Oh I remember you, green-bag. You're the square new guy at the club house that couldn't tell a stool pidgeon from a torpedo. Good to see you though, you're right; you can really use me."

Clearly the group had grown by one more stooge at this point, a tower of guy who looked like he came straight out of Harlem on a good day, unlike this one. Another guy who knew Jeremy? This was getting weird indeed. Richard mouthed his cigarette and let out a long puff of smoke, signalling everyone that he was noting the conversation silently. Too bad he waited too long, for Dirk let the tounge slip that Harry was dead and they were to follow him to the police station - in Dirk's car. "To Hell with that, Dirk. How am I supposed to get back home? Cab, out here in this God-forsaken place? Nah, you know me, I'll be right behind you." Richard retorted, refusing to simply get in Dirk's car like a common thug. Either he'd have to be forced at gunpoint or have a real good reason why Richard wouldn't follow him in his own car, and so far something else was much MUCH more important, as Richard looked at the group.

"And just where has Mr. Ambrose and Mr. Anderson gone? Did they scamper off while you guys chatted over tea and cookes? "

Dirk turned and waved at Richards question, "Yeah that's fine Richard. In fact if you want the good doctor can drive his own car as long as you make sure he doesn't take off." With that Dirk stepped around the corner with Ferd in tow. He couldn't tell if the mobster was following yet, but he wasn't to concerned. Either he came or he didn't. Dirk would have preferred the trouble maker left Arkham all together but he couldn't just tell a potential lead to get lost. He shook his head as he opened the driver door to his cruiser. What a mess this whole case was.

Val sat there quietly as that Dirk fellow introduced himself as a police officer, he actually felt a little bit sheepish for once in his life with all of this talk of him being brash and rude. Perhaps he did just jump out on the man, but honestly who sits there in the rain smoking a cigarette like some kind of recent escape from the asylum.

Val continued watching silently as a black doctor of all things pulled up in a sweet piece of a car. Val didn't harbor any ill will towards their general people, being Italian was difficult as it was without making any extra enemies. Val continued to stay stuck in the maze that was his head and noticed the two new best buds hook it around a corner. Val took a slight jog and slid into the back seat in the cruiser,

"I'm going to honest this is not my first time back here." Val chuckled a little trying to break the tension that he set up.

Dirk took one last look back down the street before hopping the cruiser. He trusted Richard and all but, well strange things had been happening around that house. He hoped they'd make it to the police station alright. As he settled into his seat he grit his teeth. Strange things indeed. Things most of the police at the station had been refusing to acknowledge. What was wrong with them? Clues were clues, and developments in a case needed investigated. But nooooo everyone in this city seemed content to ignore any and all weird events, even if it meant crooks going free. He rubbed his face in agitation. Hopefully no one tried to stop him from bringing these fellas in. They'd been letting him continue his investigation as long as it didn't get them involved. This was probably a little to close to that line.

Dirk smiled tightly at Val's attempt at humor. "What a coincidence, this isn't my first time either."

Ferd laughed at Dirk and Val. Hey they were funny!

"Believe it or not Val this isn't my first time in the back of a cop car either." Ferd looked over at Val and smiled, "Though mine are all small offenses, you know breaking and entering, trespassing, that sort of thing." Ferd paused as he adjusted himself in his seat, attempting to achieve a greater level of comfort. "Apparently cops don't take kindly to my sort of investigating."

Ferd kept his friendly smile front and center as he began chatting. His eyes darted to Dirk in the front. What did Dirk know? Ferd felt his curiosity peeking. It wasn't often cases like this were still open more than a day after their discovery. Yet here Dirk was, soldiering on. True he made it sound as though he was receiving support from his superiors but Ferd had his doubts. Ferd's hand made its way to his pocket where he kept his pocket knife. It wasn't much but he was tired of having no defense ready if anything went down. It wasn't that he didn't believe Dirk, in fact he felt quite confident the man was a legitimate cop. No Ferd's mind was outside the car. He resisted an urge to look behind them, feeling sure that they were being followed.

Val was bemused these two up standing citizens getting into shoved into the back of some car and taken away.

"Oh I almost forgot you pegged me Dirk," Val pulled out his Beretta, flashing it to the two men, " I might be carrying, but I'm thinking we can just over look this offence, right?" Valentino sat there and immediately felt a flash of regret, it never pays to show off your card. Shit could go haywire in minutes and he did not want to be caught in the middle of it all. He wondered if all of this was worth anything, being thrown into some idiotic escapade with no answer, but he was in the thick of it now so no turning back.

“What in the good heaven is happening!” Ambrose gasped with sudden shock as the world around him seemed to fade. Richard just seemed to vanish to that of dust. However, the most puzzling fact was that none of the colorful characters even flinched or acknowledged the man disappearing or the gasp. This fact was odd to Ambrose and once again he called out with a booming posh voice like a gentleman calling his shot in golf.

“Did you fine gentleman not see Richard just fade! Why is there no reaction to this terrible crisis!” He said with mild disgust, again no response and dread filled the man.

“What? HELLO! Gentleman please give me a sign you hear me!” He said again in a booming voice with slight terror in his voice. Something about this place, the past, just everything was setting off red flags for Ambrose. He was next to the group but they acted as if he was gone with the wind. However, a slight improvement came to this odd situation when he could see that James understood what the mountain of a man was saying.

“You can hear me correct Mr. James?” Ambrose said before continuing, “They cannot and I do not know why!” He leaned back on a wall thinking of the next step to do before a rather primitive one came upon him. With a gleam from his eyes Ambrose knew that maybe doing something physical would get the groups attention. With the thought, he quickly turned to the dead rotting wall planks touching them with care before realizing how easy it would be to break.

“Well, let’s see if I still have the touch!” He said as a heavy right fist broke easily through the dying wall making a crashing noise while a cut sliced into his knuckle. However, none of this mattered if they could just hear him.

The Doctor cocked his head to the side like he was trying to hear something, then he jumped a bit. " Are you okay?. Did you fall through something?".

"someone is trapped inside the house, get the policeman!"

Oh my stars, Hang on, someone is coming. Are you hurt badly? The good Doctor wasn't one to rush into things like someone else's emergency but then again, He was going to wait to see if they wanted his help.

Richard Barker

"Yeah, sure thing Detective Garther, since you asked nicely. I'll make sure he comes along, peacefully." Richard told Dirk as the small group of the cop, fake cop and the Italian fella walk off to their set of wheels further down the street. He himself was put on baby-sitting duty for their good doctor, though Richard's harsh comment earlier was more his to-the-face attitude than annoyance.

Turning over to Alonzo, Richard touched the tip of his fedora and nodded to him with his scarred nose. "Being the true gentelman a New Yorker I am, wouldn't dream of anything else. Dr. Scott was it? Barker, Richard Barker. Before you ask, yeah I'm a shamus. Private detective, finding what's bothering people just like you do Doc." Richard introduced himsef to the doctor, flicking the dead ash off his cigarette and turning back towards Jeremy's pile of planks and bricks. So the two last fellas were still inside? That didn't make any sense.

Richard was about to ask Alonzo about that Chinese angle when he had the good doctor shouted in his ear like an incompetent nurse had just stabbed him in the private parts. "What are you flim-flamming about, old man?" Richard asked the doctor, giving him a long face at first as if he was talking to someone else. When he was told someone was trapped inside the house and to get Dirk back, Richard looked back and forth the old house and Alonzo. "I've got a feeling I'm stuck behind the 8-ball here. What the Hell are you on about, doc?"

It was not until he heard a noise from the house - a loud and brief one, something breaking through wood. Was that the sound Alonzo had heard, assuming someone was stuck inside? Richard sighed heavily, instinctively drawing his Colt Police Revolver as he began jogging towards the house, wondering if their promised bad guys had just gotten the jump on Ambroise and James. If that were the case, Alonzo's need for Dirk to return would be too late. "No time if someone's sent Ambroise and James on a permanent New Jersey vacation. James, Ambroise! You hear me in there? What's the trouble?"

Why he couldn't hear or see neither James nor Ambroise could only be answered by the powers that may be, something only a King or follower would know.

Dirk Garther

Dirk pursed his lips. Hm. Should he bother with Val's pistol? The man was clearly no fool, if Dirk had to guess he'd have said that palming the thing was just habit for the man. No it didn't seem likely that he was going to make any rash decisions.

"Best to keep your gat pocketed Mr. Valentino." He glanced over his shoulder, "We wouldn't want another officer to peg you. I'd have a hell of a time explaining why I didn't confiscate that right away."

Turning back to his driving Dirk continued, "Frankly I'm surprised the two of you came along without any hesitation. What with the both of you having records of evading or resisting arrest, I pictured this going a bit differently."

"Almost there gents, just another block."

Ferd Smith

Feed smiled sheepishly at the mention of the times he'd attempted to avoid being arrested. But if anyone else knew what he did, they wouldn't have blamed him. Not all cops could be trusted after all.

As they pulled up to the mid sized police precinct Ferd took a look around. Nothing to fancy, pretty much what you'd expect from a police station. A spot for civilians to park, a separate area for cop cars in the back, and fenced off area for vehicles being held for further inspection. The building itself was three stories high, which seemed a bit excessive to Ferd. Two stories sure, but Arkham wasn't that big, and he doubted that this precinct covered that much of the city anyways. By the looks of the building it was one of the newer ones, meaning it was probably as large and fancy as it was purely out of pride. City Father's all over America had been making a big deal out of building newer bigger buildings to show off their cities wealth.
This was probably part of that. After all, what did a precinct need? A holding cell, an interigation room or two, offices for discussion and planning, and cubicles for paper work. Ferd grunted. He'd bet that third floor was all but empty, the police chief probably being the only one to use it. Ferd imagined him kicking back in the largest office available upstairs. With a roll of his eyes he opened the door as Dirk parked. Police needed to spend less time concerned with procedure and pomp. There were real mysteries out there that needed real solving.

Val looked down at his gun as the car rode on, she was a beauty, always kept nice and shiny. Surprisingly it was the only legit thing about the man, everything else either fell off a truck or due to some unknown circumstance came into Val's open arms. He put it back in his pocket,

"I'll keep it hidden, but the only reason I didn't try to take off was that you seem like the honest sort, I can usually tell if somebody is slimy but you seem alright for a copper." Dirk parked and Val hopped out eager to not have to spend any extra time hanging in the back of a cop car.

"Alright boys in and out right?" Val struck a smile as the words flew out, nothing involving police stations ever really seemed to go fast to Val. Maybe police stations are just in another dimension, but Val really wasn't too interested in this trip.

"Being the true gentleman a New Yorker I am, wouldn't dream of anything else. Dr. Scott was it? Barker, Richard Barker. Before you ask, yeah I'm a shamus. Private detective, finding what's bothering people just like you do Doc." Richard introduced himself to the doctor, flicking the dead ash off his cigarette and turning back towards Jeremy's pile of planks and bricks. So the two last fellas were still inside? That didn't make any sense.

" The pleasure is all mine Mr. Barker " Doctor Scott comments back to him with a short smile

"You can't hear that?" Doctor Scott looks at him like he is the one that is acting crazy here.
