Biography
When most people think of the tiny, Eastern European nation of Sokovia, they picture brutal arrests of protesters in the streets, firefights between military and rebel forces in half-ruined cities, and countless videos from hungry and scared civilians posted online, begging for humanitarian aid.
This has not always been the case, of course. Waylon and Petra's parents met in the Sokovia of the mid-ninties, a wholly unremarkable developing nation, far from the public stage. Their mother, Doctor Maria Flores, was a scientist from Puerto Rico who moved to Sokovia in order to become a lecturer at the University of Novi Grad. Their father, Erik Maximoff, began studying for his PhD that very same year.
After his graduation, the newly married Doctors Maximoff began work at a government-run research facility. Not long after that, Waylon and Petra were born. By this point Sokovia was already on the trajectory for civil war but, like so many others, the Maximoffs maintained hope that the conflicts would fizzle out and things would return to normal.
So the twins grew up, their parents' combined salaries affording them a comfortable lifestyle. Waylon, younger by fourteen minutes, was always the more social of the two. If he wasn't at school, odds were that he could be found playing with his friends at the park. Petra, on the other hand, would usually come home and park herself right in front of the television, where she'd watch American shows until either her brother or one of her parents would pry her away.
The first armed conflicts between the Sokovian military and the insurgent groups representing an oppositional political party began in 2014. Over a period of just a few months, the lives of ordinary people across the country were turned upside down. Public transportation ceased, curfews were enforced, schools shutdown and many families fled cities altogether, in the hopes of avoiding the worst of the bloodshed.
Though it would be impossible to keep them from having any idea of what was happening, the gravity of the situation did not settle on the kids right away. The first few weeks after school was cancelled were exciting, to them, in spite of being confined to their apartment complex. They got to spend more time with each other, watching Petra's favorite shows and playing the games Waylon normally played with their friends.
February 9th, 2015, their lives would change forever. It all happened so quickly; one minute, they were sitting around the family dining table, playing a board game with their parents. The next... Crashing. Explosions. Screaming. On that day, dozens of shells marked "Stark Industries" were dropped on Novi Grad. Waylon and Petra were found in the rubble, huddled together under their table, some two days later.
Neither Waylon nor Petra has spoken much about the event, or the several weeks that followed. It is assumed that they were rescued and traveled with other refugees until they were intercepted near the Sokovian-Polish border by a relief group. As it turned out, their paternal uncle, Django, had flown in from his home in the States upon being notified that his niece and nephew were alive. The twins had only met him a handful of times before, but Django was the only family they had left, and they were overjoyed to be reunited with him.
Django and his wife, Marya, had done well for themselves in New York City. Marya, having had a successful career as a stage actor, had since become a big Broadway/Off-Broadway director, and Django owned a marketing firm. Neither had ever planned on having children, but they stepped up to be the parents that the twins needed.
With dedicated study and a fair amount of tutoring, Waylon was able to resume his schooling at the same level as his peers, while Petra was content to join the grade below. Attractive and confident, with delightfully foreign accents and a mysterious past to boot, it didn't take much for them to become fairly popular in their new school. Waylon would eventually join the swim team and multiple clubs, including the student council and the National Honor Society, but his real passion became music. Their Aunt and Uncle were happy to put him in private music lessons, and it wouldn't be long until music became his life.
For her part, Petra put in the bare minimum effort at school, considering it mostly just the place she went to see her friends. She was briefly on her middle school's soccer team, but got kicked off for fighting. Her general apathy so concerned her Aunt and Uncle that, the moment she finally showed interest in something, floating the idea that she'd like to try boxing, they put her in classes immediately and were incredibly supportive of the pursuit.
Not long after entering high school, Waylon founded a band with some of his friends: Jaggerdaw. What originally started as an excuse for a few buddies to jam together turned into something of a local sensation. They made it big first with the underground NYC music scene, and then, thanks to social media, got a following abroad. It didn't seem like they could possibly get bigger than that. However, when the band relocated after Waylon's acceptance to the Royal College of Music in London, they gained a new guitarist who totally changed the game.
Nobody could have imagined that it would explode in popularity the way it did. Waylon ultimately decided to put his studies on hold to go on tour, and he's been riding the wave of fame ever since. Returning to NYC for their 4th of July concert is the first time he saw his sister in nearly a year. She's now freshly out of high school herself, though Waylon was disappointed to learn that she still doesn't have any real direction for the future.
