ANDY RUTLEDGE
NINETEEN | DEPARTED SON | AQUARIUS

#6A8477 // JOEY POLLARI

C H A R A C T E R I Z A T I O N

In the desert town of Blanco, rumors that a local was involved in a deadly car accident on the I-15 quickly spread. At first, they were only rumors, and everyone assumed that it was someone from down the hill. Until the body arrived at the coroner office and was identified as Andy Rutledge, the recent graduate of Golden Valley High. That news was devastating to everyone, especially to the friends and family of Andy. He was known for being determined to do whatever it took to improve his situation. His main goal was to leave for the City of Angeles to become the first to graduate for college.

And once he did that and started earning enough money, Andy wanted to buy his family their own home instead of spending their lives paying a landlord to live in that apartment. Of course, that dream was shattered on June 7th, 2003.

Andy planned on heading down the hill to be interviewed by some potential roommates while hunting for a job. He said his goodbyes to family and friends before departing. Before he drove off in his first car, Andy told them that he will call them once he got to his destination in Los Angeles. However, he never got the chance. It took fifteen hours before his family learned of his death and accident. According to witnesses, another driver suddenly braked, which caused Andy to swerve into the railing. His car was totaled entirely while the body remained good enough condition to have an open-casket funeral.

The funeral was held at McCaa Memorial Cemetery, where his body remained to this day.

Andy dreamed of being a zookeeper but ultimately settled on being an architect.

Leia Rutledge

39 / SISTER / SAGITTARIUS

1e90ff // zooey deschanel

R E L A T I O N S T O A N D Y

Leia was the eldest and with only a small gap between her and Andy there was a connection sibling’s shared.

But Leia never felt like she was going to be able to get out, so when Andy had the opportunity to do so, helped him achieve that in every possible way she could. With his death, a large shadow loomed over the already neurotic and introverted young woman with her falling into bad habits. Much like her father she fell into her worse impulses with alcohol in conjunction with her neurosis getting worse by the minute. Leia’s social aversion led to her to making sure she did not form any lasting or significant friendships.

As for the memory of Andy, well, she didn’t forget. Unlike her father, Leia has visited the grave twice a year since it happened; once on his birthday and once on the anniversary of his death. Despite becoming more closed off emotionally, she didn’t feel like it was right to pretend he never existed. Perhaps a lot of this was due to the bond they had as brother and sister. She was responsible, smart, a bit of a mess, but she still remembers her senior year quite well. Andy was fifteen-years-old then. Couldn’t drive. Didn’t know much of how to survive. Better times. The know-it-all big sister. She taught him everything she could while she worked herself to death at her part-time job. Life was so unfair sometimes.

C H A R A C T E R I Z A T I O N

Born in the middle of the night on the 3rd of December in 1980, Leia has always been a bit of the bookish geek variety.

Years after the loss of Andy has caused a lot of Leia’s spiritedness to dull, though she has gotten more impatient and short-tempered. Maybe it’s the alcohol or the lingering memory of what-ifs and should-haves, but Leia isn’t exactly the spitting image of her namesake or even how those she dated in high school remembered her most. There’s an aversion to long term relationships—her daughter can attest to this much as pretty much every man interested in Leia has ended up out of the door in less than a year at a time. Leia feels trapped in her own head, like the universe is telling her because she lost her brother in a terrible accident she doesn’t and won’t commit to anybody long-term. On the other end with her own daughter she’s over-protective, constantly worried and paranoid. It’s a weird duality of sorts, but she was already neurotic before she lost her brother, so it’s not a complete stretch.

Currently, Leia is trying to carry on, ignoring everything that she’s able to. She lives on her own as a single mother in a rent-to-own situation as she tends to things at the local bar to make her living.

NICHOLAS RUTLEDGE
SIXTY-TWO | DISILLUSIONED FATHER | VIRGO

#3b6642 // SEAN MCGINLEY

R E L A T I O N S T O A N D Y

Nicholas was an avid supporter of Andy's dreams, not just for his goal to reach college but teaching his son to stand and fight for what he wished for. Sure he may have prioritised his son's well being over that of his other kids once or twice, but it was the dream Andy had that inspired his father to help as much as he could- and while they weren't as close as they could have been, Nicholas still tried.. maybe a bit too much sometimes.

He didn't always understand his children, no that was more his wife's speciality. Rather than taking them to a movie or an arcade for fun, a day out would be a family trip to the local pub for a meal and conversation with strangers- a typical day could be taken over with a moment of impulse, and the kids would often be forced out of whatever they were doing to travel miles for a family walk, or to be taken to the park for a game of footie they were all too tired to enjoy. While he could be straining at times without really understanding there were other views than his own, Nicholas truly cared about each and every one of his children, and loved Andy all the same.

C H A R A C T E R I Z A T I O N

The town of Blanco would rather remember the tragedy of Andy, and what was lost over what remained in the wake. A family broken, their bonds strained and severed as they each continue aimlessly through life- dreams warped and struggles brought into their lives. The father, the new fool of town, the drinker, the mourner. Peace never came to the man past the vigil of his departed son, he now lives aimless and forgotten in the walls of his own home lost in memories of what used to be.

No longer did the man bother to charm and cheer as he used to, the glow of humility and life was extinguished.

Too close to retirement age to earn a decent living, Nicholas prefers the company of television and unemployment benefits to that of his family or old friends, the latter he now sees rarer than ever. The man has lost what little he had left, his hopes and dreams he placed on his son died along with him. While others picked themselves up and move along with their lives, Nicholas was left behind. The connection he had with his long time wife had shrivelled, and she left him to make her own mark on the world. The children who once adored him, only saw the empty husk of a broken man now- angry and bitter and all the raging emotions in-between.

Still living in the apartment he brought his kids up in, Nicholas may not know it but he waits for a change to save him.

Nicholas hasn't visited Andy's grave since the funeral.
