The Collapse

Incomprehensible corruption, flesh forbidden from life now alive, an assembly of cells not too different from the creatures...

No one really knew how it happened.

All memories had become a blur, crowds running, buildings burning, looting, killings, the slaughter of entire peoples in miliseconds, strange weapons of war altering reality, interdimensional beings flooding space...It took a long time for everything to truly become apocalyptic, yet at the same time it seemed like it took only seconds. Perhaps reality itself now longer considered time a means of measurement? That everything in the past had become condensed by some god, like a force of nature it did what its instincts told it, shortening time and altering memories, the perception of life itself...

Or perhaps stress and insanity had invoked such trauma few could reasonably calculate what had occurred, no one really knew what had happened in all this time- perhaps nothing happened at all? It was just a trick of the mind, a en masse hallucination event that made everyone a savage on some isolated realm while everything else was normal. Or maybe it was that life itself had been transferred from one universe to another, pulled away from safety as someone summoned the attention of some sort of dark entity, who took all too much interest in causing chaos...

No one really knew how it happened.

Even war had become merciful, for there were the dead, liberated from their hell. Now that liberation was gone as corpses walk...

In the countless existences that stretched beyond into the endless abyss that had become life, the darkness- seemingly alive and inclined on
moving forth like a wall of darkness, swallowing up everyone into it's cold, deathly clutches -had consumed everything. The word, safety, meant nothing, it was hard to tell if that word was still remembered by people as well, it's definition altered after countless thousands of years spent hiding away, safety seeming to mean more that "The walls wont extend with tentacles to choke you and there aren't rivers of lava with golems rising from the corrupted streams." rather than actual safety. It wasn't like you could live in one place for long anyway, creating safehouses and safe zones- there was simply too much out there in grandiose and murderous abyss that life had become, lurking out when they smelt even the slightest hint of joy or happiness, attracted to a sizable group of survivors like flies to a flytrap. And much like those flies, the various monstrosities that existed were driven by pure instinct, there was no negotiating, no pleading, no distracting. Only death.

Which is why it'd be astounding to hear of one message... that there was a chance to escape. Escape? It wasn't a word easily understood. You could escape from the various killers out here in this dark universe, but escape this Hell itself? It seemed all to good to be true, but so many different people proclaimed it to be true. Within the abandoned wilderness and remains of civilization, here were writings on walls, scribbles in some degree of language understood, there were encampments with recorded messages for other people, radios- voices faintly heard thanks to the endless storms -and road signs pointing in some sort of direction, towards a massive city, deep within the dense red fog that covered the universe.

It had to be a trick, that some elaborate trap was being set by a entity out there keen on gathering as many people as possible, but...was there a choice in the matter? The endless apocalypse only grew more dangerous, the city itself- now a likely destination for the thousand or so sane people left -had some form of makeshift barrier from the outside world and if other survivors had travelled there before, that they could get these messages out, then perhaps there was a chance it wasn't an absolute death trap.

Through the endless fog, ruins jut out from the ground like old trees, their histories long with stories no one will ever know...

Getting there hasn't been an easy trek, the wilderness surrounding the city is dense with trees and the cursed red fog, monsters and the insane lurk within, small abandoned buildings dot the landscape that could provide safe haven, yet seemingly always occupied by something desiring to kill. The roads, abandoned of bodies or wreckages, would be facing harsh winds that kept spreading the endless clouds of crimson. Strange screeches heard in the morning and even more at night, as well as the heavy breaths of unseen watchers.

Yet the get inside the city had been a sight even worse.

If all these disturbing things lurked outside, to have them all jammed into tight streets and small hallways, within residential blocks alongside all-too vulnerable survivors...The entire city was left to look like a battleground, that a war without end had been waged here. Gunshots, the cries of beasts, strange anomalies and packs of mutated flesh, the laughter of mad gods alongside the chants of their cultists, war machines with their lights blinking within the dark, strange people who watched from unreachable locations, immortal beings who merely sat and laughed at the chaos, flying monstrosities who floated down and captured people traversing the streets, a hovering eye who drove people mad when staring at them, convoys of men adorned in military gear shooting everything on sight, sapient diseases that argued with each other as the infectious spores floated in the air, city blocks flooded with strange green liquids that melted some and mutated others, a few original dwellers of the city not trying to go insane from it all...

And soon enough, there would be you.

Three weeks ago...

Her eyes fluttered open, the red lighting that flooded her surroundings nearly blinding Mia. She took a breath, and immediately felt as if she were choking. The coughing fit caused the young woman to slump forward, unintentionally pushing open the glass door before her body hit the ground. Simultaneously, the bright overhead lights flickered to life, a safe bet to assume they were probably motion sensor. The impact from the fall made her vomit some content which appeared to be mainly water. She hadn't noticed it right away but prior to her throwing up, she was feeling rather nauseated. At least that was done and over with quickly. Mia took a few moments to get her bearings straight. She looked back up at the chamber she had fallen out of, and as she did, some memories slowly made their way back to her. She was put to sleep for an unknown amount of time; Mia couldn't exactly recall the exact details, but she had volunteered for the position to be involved in some research they were conducting. All in the name of scientific advancement, of course.

But now here she was, feeling all sorts of ill with some mild pain and no one was around. Maybe they had gone home already, that was a possibility. But if that were the case, shouldn't they at least have one assistant on site to monitor the systems? It'd only make sense. Mia attempted to get up off the ground but her legs wouldn't hold her and she fell down once more just as quickly. The process was frustrating to say the least, but she had been warned about the side effects of being under for so long. She then crawled to the nearest wall and with its help, she finally managed to get to her feet.

"H-hello?"

Mia didn't recognize her own voice. It was hoarse, barely above a whisper. She was met with more silence, as expected. No one was around, obviously, however, it couldn't hurt to try to possibly reach someone, maybe even a janitor. Mia studied her surroundings before carefully stepping forward, her efforts primarily focused on not falling down again. She walked about half the length of the lab when she noticed a note on the wall. A tad curious, Mia slowly made her way over to it.

Ms. Madani,

If you happen to be this reading this letter, please note you have approximately one hour from the moment you woke up to get above ground before the facility commences its self-destruct sequence. Unfortunately, we had to abandon the project, and as you were made aware before, we could not wake you up prior to the prearranged time without posing great risks to your health. Simply put, all hell has broken loose here and we are dropping like flies. Fortunately for you, the chamber can induce your ability if it detects danger nearby, all we had to do was conduct a few minor changes to the settings.

Up there, it is not like it was before. Please take care of yourself, and note that it was a pleasure working with you. I’ve placed some protective clothing near the counter by the door. I trust you will do well.

Best,

Dr. Henry King

Mia stood frozen for a moment in pure disbelief. Whatever the hell was going on up there, she did not want to find out. But then again, she couldn’t necessarily wait it out either, and so she made her way to the counter to don her new clothes.

Carter, just outside the city, a standard walk in lands unknown

Howling winds were replied with loud screeches and animalistic howls in the endless abyssal red fog, in the distance a loud thunderstrike would emit a loud CRACK as the skies- now seen thanks to the sudden thunder -lit up...but only for a brief moment. To stare above would be a a endless dark blanket of grey and red, not to dissimilar to that of the endless corpses that have degenerated into grey muck, landscape littered with pools of desecrated flesh and bone that bubbled with acidic and otherworldly chemicals that'd be lethal to touch. Bones, both white and covered in fresh red meat, that cracked under the weight of hefty boots.

His pace was moderate- fast as he could go but slow enough not to make any more noise. The cracking of bones, twigs and the crushing of glass while impacting sheets of metal would be heard, the landscape littered with all manner of wreckages both recognizable and not. It wasn't like all things seemed completely alien, he could make out understandable things through the broken wreckages, the steering wheels of ancient cars, the flickering lights and upright skeletons as if dying on the spot. Perhaps they saw something incomprehensible that eviscerated their consciousness, leaving them a starving meat husk to die. Maybe these skeletons had a story, one he couldn't see, bullet holes and cracked ribs...or maybe they didn't make any sense at all and simply laid there like a decoration. He didn't want to know why.

Carter rubbed the gasmask's visor, two holes around the eyes with fogged up and scratched glass. He'd then hastily place the hand under the gun's barrel, raising it and walking forth. Each step was an awkward, unsure and hesitant one, as if every inch of land ahead was covered in sharp objects or lacking ground to firmly stand on. He'd listen, waiting for the uneasy and nauseating screech of some unknown creature, the stock of the gun against his shoulder as he waited to raise it and fire into the unending fog, then preparing to run in a hasty and cowardly manner away from whatever made the noise.

But the howling never came.

So he kept his pace, continuing his delicate and stressed out walk, tense, fearful, pupils darting back and forth constantly as he tried to see both through his mask and the fog that surrounded him. It was a quiet day today. Too quiet.
