Well, it certainly seemed like Linda and Daigo were up for some pancakes, and hopefully Ueno-san was up for some taste-testing. Though Daigo seemed a little less pleased than Linda. Though Daigo was kind of right, that first pancake could be a problem, and he didn't exactly know what temperature to put the pan to off the top of his head. "Yeah, that first pancake usually ends up being a casualty. Though I suppose you could just start with a smaller pancake to test the waters, you'd waste a lot less. Better yet if it's awful it's less you have to suffer though." Genki joked.

Though first things first: the pancake batter. That shouldn't be too hard, and Kaito already had the ingredients out, so getting started shouldn't be too hard. Genki went to the cabinet that Kato went to to get another bowl. He then walked over to Kaito's station, where he had laid out all of the ingredients needed. Hopefully they were sharing ingredients, unless for some strange reason everyone got their own carton of eggs, bag of sugar and jug of milk. That just sounded expensive.

"So, uh... I don't know where anything is at, where can I get a beater like that at? Or maybe a whisk if you only have the one? I got this mixing bowl in the cabinet you went to, Genki waved the glass bowl in his hands. But do you think you could give me a quick tour? He looked over to Daigo. Oh, and probably Daigo there, too." He said, finally setting down the glass mixing bowl on the counter near the other two.

April 11th—Afternoon

Emi giggled quietly at Linda’s enthusiastic acceptance of her offer, both in satisfaction that her on-the-fly excuse had worked and at the idea of being a taste-tester. “Of course!” she beamed at Mizuame, extending her cane to make her way to the counter. “Makoto-kun always did think I was good at that. One of the advantages of blindness, I suppose!”

She giggled once more as she hopped onto a bar stool opposite the ovens, propping her elbows up on the counter between her and the bakers. She didn’t actually know if the whole “heightened senses” thing about blindness was true, but she always thought it was a fun idea. She didn’t think she really had any heightened senses - well, aside from the one Euryphaessa gave her, but that was unrelated - but then again, she’d never not been blind, so for all she knew she could be a superhero when it came to taste and smell. Why not go with it, right?

She set her folder aside and simply listened for a moment, propping her chin up on her wrist. The nervous-sounding boy seemed to be coming out of his shell a little bit, and by the sound of his remarks, he was familiar with cooking himself. A knot formed in Emi’s throat as she listened to him and Maeda talk about eggs and heat and whatever else; she couldn’t help but notice that his meek tone of voice, paired with his relative expertise, reminded her a lot of Makoto. Come to think of it, the two of them shared many a moment like this before, Makoto talking the intricacies of cooking and her listening intently as the smells of his baking filled the room. It was bittersweet, to say the least. If only she had stopped to savour it back then, rather than reminiscing on it now.

A sudden bang on the counter made Emi jump, startling her out of her melancholy. Maeda’s following battle cry revealed the noise to be nothing more than an expression of enthusiasm, fortunately, but the ingredients he listed off sounded incomplete.

“Don’t you need baking powder, too? So they fluff up?” she asked, tapping her jaw. “Or are you making American pancakes? I hear they don’t really rise at all.”

The uptight ones were always interesting to tease. Everything was so literal and like a coarse baton rammed up their asses. Maki tried not to chuckle to herself as they disregarded what she said with obvious solutions. Of course, they didn’t practice with fruit. Maki was just allowing herself the small luxury of teasing Nakano in front of every extension of Hinotori High that she could get away with. They’d practically let a snake into their hen coop. That was how the saying went, right? She was from Kyoto, but she wasn’t that much of a bumpkin.

When the vice president addressed her, Maki stiffened into a salute. “Right, right. Slander. Though, I hope anyone with half a brain cell could figure out that not a single ounce of that was the truth. But… I don’t know if we have many honor students in the class. Of course, President Nakano is. She’s a gleaming beacon to which we all wish to aspire. I mean, her blind guard dog is vicious. That sort of loyalty is inspiring.” She brought her hand down and pressed her clenched fist into her chest as if she was reciting something awe worthy. “No, seriously, Ueno is a boss.”

April 11th - After School

Daigo watched Kaito's outburst with growing enthusiasm. Finally, someone he could work with around here! So long as the other second-year didn't descend back into souffle-induced hysterics again, at least. Okay, fine, Kaito was weird, but that excitability was something Daigo sorely missed in a kitchen and it was hard to associate with the greats if one couldn't handle a bit of eccentricity. It was just a bonus that the brunette had nothing to do with the creepy mirror world.

"I like this energy, but I'm really not the guy to be following for pancake wisdom," The ginger offered with a lighthearted giggle. At Ueno's comment, he gestured toward her and nodded in contrast to his prior statement, "She's right." He might've been acting a bit too humble - this was definitely not his first meringue, but he hardly considered his dessert expertise all-encompassing. His comfort zone was sorbet, and it was hard to brag about being good at a recipe with only like three steps.

Daigo pushed his sleeves up as best he could to avoid any batter stains on his uniform, then paused at Genki's observation. Right. He had no idea where anything was or what the protocol around here was. The only thing on his mind at that moment was separating egg whites, honestly. And a niggling little reminder in the back of his mind not to mess up the meringue and look like a jackass; he'd probably used up all of his luck for the day avoiding any comments about his nervous mannerisms.

"Honestly, I was just gonna work with Maeda-kun, but if there's enough stuff for everybody..." The redhead's voice trailed off as his gaze swept the unfamiliar kitchen. Surely he wasn't so starved for time in a kitchen that the mere mention of pancakes of all things sent him stumbling over himself in an attempt to cook something. He cleared his throat and bashfully adjusted his glasses out of habit before looking back to Kaito, "But, erm, a tour would probably be a good place to start." Genki at least had produced a mixing bowl from... somewhere. Daigo had been too deep in his own head to even note where Kaito had pulled it from.

Noriaki wasn't entirely sure whether he should have expected Nakano's rebuff or not. Sure, she was renown as something of an ice queen, but shooting down the plea of a lonely child just seemed particularly cruel, especially with how melancholy she had been prior. It was true that trying to maintain a friendship with someone who didn't attend your school was somewhat difficult, especially with the age gap, and that having a thirteen year old trailing after him wasn't exactly the kind of attention he had wanted to cultivate, but there was no need to actually crush her hopes like that.

"I'm sure we'll see each other around the neighborhood," He offered the girl in consolation, "We could always talk then."

The topic of conversation had abruptly shifted after the trio arrived on Noriaki's street. After his first run in with the shadowy mirror world, he had done all he could to avoid the house on the corner. Unfortunately for him, that place was exactly where his two companions decided to direct their attention. They spoke about how it would soon be reconstructed—all but confirming a suspicion he had done his best to avoid ruminating on too long since that fateful Sunday. The younger of the pair addressed him shortly thereafter, giving him a convenient out to not look the way of the illusionary structure and whatever unwelcome inhabitants it held.

"I've heard a little here and there. Pretty sure the real estate agent mentioned rents have been down since the arson. Probably why we could afford to live this close to the school."

Sakuya was, yet again, surprised; for some reason, she assumed that he wouldn't like the idea of Himawari hanging around. Maybe she really didn't give him enough credit. Her hand reached up to her hair, a small frown on her face as she looked back at the burnt house. She wasn't comfortable delving into the topic, but she wasn't really sure what to say otherwise.

Himawari, on the other hand, immediately turned to Hoshino, her eyes lighting up at his response. She seemed particularly pleased with his suggestion, nodding enthusiastically. She didn't bother giving the house another look, though she did notice Sakuya's expression. "What's wrong?" She asked.

"Nothing," The response came out automatically, and Sakuya dropped her hand.

Letting out a tiny hum, Himawari turned back to Hoshino. "Even with everything that happened, this is still a really good place to live," She told him, though she suddenly let out a gasp. "I wonder what happened to the cat that used to be around here...I hope it's okay."

Even if the venture had done little to endear Nakano's perpetually sour self to him, at least Natsuhime seemed to come away from it happier. He half expected the former's fixation on the house to imply she too could see it in all it's phantom glory. It was more likely she was just ruminating on its destruction—the younger of the two had mentioned that her brother disappeared shortly after the fires, and if not for the middle schooler's insistence that he could somehow come back, Noriaki would have assumed the elder Nakano had perished in them.

Some levity was introduced to the oppressive atmosphere by Natsuhime's concern for the cat. That was something he could provide a defined certainty to, unlike the fates of mysteriously missing siblings.

"The cat's fine. I found him wandering around a few days after we move in," He told the concerned tween to assuage her worries, "I guess he's mine now? He's been sleeping with me these past couple nights, and I bought him a collar and all."

Himawari sighed in relief, perking up considerably. "I'm so happy he's okay," She hummed, rocking back and forth on the heels of her feet. "He's a sweet kitty, I'm so glad he wasn't hurt. I tried to get him to come to my house, but he never wanted to come in."

Sakuya let out a tiny laugh, scratching her cheek. "That cat never did warm up to me," She admitted quietly.

"Maybe that can change now!" Himawari looked at Noriaki. "Maybe someday we can visit and see the kitty together!"

"It's less the rumor itself and more the fact that you decided to write it in the first place that is the issue," Oka replied without skipping a beat, shaking her head in disappointment. "You could at least try to take the path of least resistance instead of trying to aggravate us with more dry humor."

Sora scratched the back of his head, giving Oka a look. "I think Nakano-senpai would prefer if we all got along," He said, frowning.

Oka's glare was less-than-pleased, albeit she seemed to agree, rolling her eyes. "While I'm sure Nakano-san will iron out any details, you can count on Kinoshita-kun to assist you when needed," She stated.

He opened his mouth to protest, clearly unhappy with the situation. He looked over at Maki, trying not to react too much, though he ended up nodding. "Yeah. I'll be happy to help," He quietly agreed.

"Then that's settled," Oka looked back at Maki. "I'll assume you have no protest."

Clapping her hands together to get everyone's attention, Linda made sure the ones that could look were looking at her. "I always like to compare everyone's food, so there is plenty to go around!" She stated, stepping away and brandishing an arm around the room. "Kaito-kun, a chair for Ueno-san, if you would!"

The brunette temporarily abandoned his spot, jogging over to where a desk and a few chairs were and hauling a chair over. Once he placed it down next to Emi, he returned to the stoves. Satisfied, Linda walked over to a few cabinets. "Everything used to have one central location, but since we don't have as many members, everyone can pick their own cabinet and have their own set of tools," She explained, opening both over and under-cabinet doors, revealing a complete set of mixing tools for cooking, including a variety of bowls, utensils, chopping blocks, and a complete knife set.

"Anything mechanical is located closer to the stoves, and of course, I'll be keeping a close eye to make sure everything is well taken care of--the mixers and toaster ovens are kinda on the pricey side," She said as she revealed them in their places. "Obviously, the fridges have cold ingredients, the cabinets over there have everything else--though, I will give a heads up, if there's anything unconventional that you'd like to make, make sure to let me know. We do our grocery trips every Monday."

The next few days passed without incident; the most activity was the sudden investigation of the broken mirror in the gym, though that concluded with the blame landing on a stray cat that had somehow gotten into the school. The clubs were up and running, the animosity among the students lessened, and for a short time, everything felt normal. There were a few middle school students that had taken an interest in the school, but considering a majority of them were third years, it wasn't strange. No blue butterflies were seen, either.

Until April 13th, at least.

APRIL 13TH, 2018
CLOUDY DAY

Grumbling to himself, Taniguchi straightened the papers on his desk and placed his hands down. He had been feeling particularly restless since he woke up this morning. A streak of bad luck had hit since the moment he tripped over his dog, and he wasn't looking forward to his meeting with the visitor today. Damn kids and their issues, what happened to people minding their own business? This woman was a pain in his ass every time she visited, too. He had considered himself lucky that she wasn't hovering today, but she had given him notice that she would be showing up to check in.

And so once the knock on the door came, Taniguchi wasn't surprised. He leaned back in his seat as he told her to come in. The woman stepped in with too much confidence, taking a second to adjust her glasses before striding over to his desk. "Good morning, Taniguchi-san," She greeted him cordially. "Thank you for seeing me."

"Of course, Aoki-san. It's good to see you," He replied.

"I'll be direct, if you don't mind," She said, placing a hand on her hip. "How are the students doing?"

"I haven't heard anything, so presumably, all is well," He said with a sigh. "Wouldn't personal interviews rid the need of you and I meeting?"

"An adult's perspective is valuable," She told him. "I'm planning on seeing Hoshino-kun sooner than later to see how he's adjusting. Has he been sociable?"

"He's been helping out the student council."

Aoki widened her eyes in surprise. "Really, now?"

"Is that surprising?"

She paused. "...it is. It also means he's likely to be interacting with Nakano-san," She mumbled, though she cleared her throat. "I'm not sure if it's a good idea for those two."

"Nakano is a model student who was happy to oversee Hoshino," Taniguchi stated.

Aoki wasn't convinced, although she let it go. "Speaking of which...Nakano Sumire has been trying to get in contact with me again, so I thought I'd let you know, just in case she shows up here."

Taniguchi openly scowled at that, dismissing it with a wave. "That nut was already warned not to harass anyone here," He huffed. "More importantly, if you're going to linger, I suggest making sure Hoshino is busy. A busy student is a productive student, God knows these damn kids have nothing better to do than to start vandalizing whenever they get bored."

"Vandalizing?"

"Eh, forget it. If you'd like to meet with Hoshino today, the students will be having a shared gym day to promote some of the physical clubs' activities."

"I'll catch him after school, I wouldn't want to disrupt him from socializing," Aoki declined.

Gym

"KEEP THOSE KNEES UP! ONE! TWO! ONE! TWO!"

One of the gym teachers was having the time of his life forcing the freshman in his section to leap over hurdles. The senior members of the track club could only watch in dismay as the freshman struggled to overcome the heights, wincing as a few outright tripped and knocked down the hurdles. Sakuya watched them from a distance wearily, letting out a disappointed sigh as she turned back and looked around. The student body had been split between indoor and outdoor activities, with track, baseball, soccer, and archery taking place outside and basketball, volleyball, and kendo taking place indoors. The swim team had some interest as well, though most were leaving them for the end of the day to avoid having to change in a rush.

Sakuya herself was mostly drifting between clubs, exempt from the 'squadrons' that had been formed in an effort to promote inter-year interactions. It made some sense on paper since the clubs weren't limited by year, but all it really meant was that there were even more groups being formed since most people just stuck to the ones they already knew.

Letting out a sigh, she ended up returning to her own group consisting of her class, 3-B, 2-A, and 1-C. They were currently indoors and playing basketball with one exception. She did wonder if Ueno-san got bored sitting on the sidelines, though at least the club members were making an effort to include her in some capacity as they swarmed the poor girl. She didn't recognize most of the second years except one, though she didn't want to suffocate him by hanging around. She swore she saw some redhead hanging around him, anyway.

Stifling a yawn, a quiet mew caught her ear. "A cat?" She swore she heard it, but when she looked around, she didn't see anything.

Her attention was directed elsewhere as the whistle was blown, and the group were told to sit down as one of the gym teachers explained the benefits of basketball. As they spoke, a light wind blew through the gym, the sun coming in through the windows. As the wind died, however, the lights suddenly flickered off. An assortment of protests and a small panic ensued, though within the darkness, a single, blue butterfly was seen on the doors leading to the rest of the school.

Friday was shaping up to be a real shit day. After his ill-fated exploration with Daigo earlier in the week, there was a brief, precious day of respite, where nothing irritating happened and Noriaki could pretend his life retained a semblance of normality. Then the faculty decided to go ahead and ruin that with some harebrained bonding scheme. In truth, it wasn't all that bad. It was just an impromptu athletics festival without any of the fanfare or excitement. Take some time out of classes, go play sports with your senpais, and fend off the vultures trying to scout you for their clubs. For most of the student body it was little more than a nuisance, and for the more athletics ones, maybe a little bit of fun. Yet despite all his athleticism, there was absolutely no joy to be had in playing sports for Noriaki. Especially not ones played in a school setting.

It made him feel pathetic. It had been almost a year since his little incident with the team back in Osaka, but his mood immediately soured whenever he so much as thought about baseball, or joining up with another club. He had loved the game, loved playing, and now he couldn't so much as watch the other class play without trudging up old feelings he'd promised himself he wouldn't humor. If there was any mercy in the events of the day, it was that his class had been picked to remain indoors, and instead of taking up on the diamond, they had the gymnasium assigned to them. He hadn't taken much of a shine to basketball before, but in the moment, it provided him with an outlet for all his negativity. Rather than brooding on the sidelines, the transfer student made himself a tyrant of the court.

The teen found himself between games, wicking the sweat from his brow with the rim of his shirt when—in a predictable turn of events—the power was lost. The mixture of panic and disappointment from his classmates was all but lost on Noriaki in that moment. His blood ran cold, not for fear, but in the briefest moment of internal pleading. Not today. Why did it have to be a day that already sucked so much? Either guided by a growing instinct, or by sheer happenstance, his blue hues drifted through the dark and landed upon the unfortunately familiar silhouette of a butterfly. The ice in his veins quickly turned to fire.

"God fuckin' dammit."

Having to deal with bizarre supernatural bullshit was bad enough. Having to deal with that bullshit with next to no warning at the drop of a hat was even worse. As much as he wanted to ignore the fluttering azure insect, it would only be a matter of time before something more dire happened to force his hand. Whether it be the dumb little cat from down the street, or the grabby hands from the mirror, something drastic would occur if he didn't go running to answer the call like some kind of attack dog. The only solace to be had was that maybe, just maybe, he'd have the opportunity to beat the living shit out of something with a big sword. Maybe that would improve his mood.

He couldn't go alone though, much as he wanted to. There was no telling what craziness awaited him at the end of the trail the butterfly was concocting. His eyes immediately moved from it towards the shock of red hair in his peripheral vision, and Noriaki gave Daigo a knowing looking—albeit one that likely came off more like a glower considering his dispotion—before gesturing with his neck to the teacher in charge.

"Hey, coach, is this a good time to use the bathroom? I gotta go, and so does Hinari." He said after jogging over to the man in charge, hiking a thumb towards the aforementioned redhead, "We'll be back before the power, I'm sure."

Basketball had to be Daigo's least favorite sport. Well, every sport was his least favorite, just for different reasons, but that was beside the point. Basketball still had to be one of the worst. Everyone was taller than him, he fumbled every catch even on the rare occasion there wasn't a giant ready to intercept the ball in front of him, all of his throws were way off target; his only consolation was that his teammates had eventually stopped passing to him altogether. He hadn't been hit in the face with a basketball yet either, which was a solid improvement from middle school.

Contrary to everyone else's annoyance, Daigo had to resist the urge to cheer as the sudden darkness descended over the gym. No more basketball! What a shame. Of course, the sobering realization that the teachers would probably just march the class outside for a different sport if the power didn't return soon rather than cancel this stupid gym day altogether put a damper on his celebration, but at least he got a short reprieve from his torment. Still, the power outage was too good to be true. There had to be some divine irony lurking in the shadows somewhere, waiting to ruin his day in exchange for cancelling the basketball game. The fiery-haired boy trudged toward the bleachers before the student body's antsiness turned into boredom; with his luck, his genius idea to leave his glasses safely tucked away from facebound basketballs on the bench would end with someone sitting on them in the dark.

He didn't get very far before the mention of a bathroom rendezvous stopped him in his tracks. Was- was that code for Hoshino needing to talk to him? Or did he intend to cut class and drag Daigo along as an accomplice into his sordid life of crime? Maybe Daigo just really looked like he had to pee. He was nervous around flying projectiles, sure, but he didn't know basketball made him look that outwardly pathetic. The boy spun around to question his classmate when he noted the subtle mote of blue in the distance.

Ah. The divine irony.

Daigo didn't need to be able to actually see it to know damn well what it was; his blood froze in his veins all the same. Which meant Hoshino was intent on following the butterfly to whatever nightmare it led them to this time. How was a newly-built gym already haunted? Or cursed. Or whatever a Lilith did to buildings with broken mirrors and poor innocent Daigos in them. With a resigned sigh, the redhead paced back toward the other would-be demon hunter. He already knew he wouldn't be able to weasel his way out of this one if he couldn't even talk his way out of the Satin Room - or whatever it was called. Wherever they were going, he prayed there was a Khepri there too, at least, because he doubted Class 2-A's walking basketball handicap would fare much better against more shadow hands.

"Um, can you help me find my glasses first? It's dark," Daigo asked innocently, though his puppy dog eyes were ruined by the obvious anxiety written blatantly across his face. Was he stalling? Yes. Would it matter in the end? Probably not. Hoshino already proved he was both willing and able to physically drag Daigo into whatever supernatural hell he was intent on putting them through, but he could at least wait until Daigo was confident he could hold his lunch down before volun-telling him to come fight monsters in mirror land.

"So, I wasn't able to make Khepri appear in that blue room earlier," He continued in a lower tone once the coach was out of earshot, "What are we gonna do if our Per... Personas, that's it! What are we gonna do if our Personas don't show up?"

While Basketball wasn't Genki's favorite sport, at least he wasn't bad at it. He was pretty tall compared to most of the other students, and could shoot pretty accurately if he had a second or two to aim. He unfortunately wasn't very fast compared to a lot of the others though. Maybe he should've joined the track team instead of the Cooking Club. Nah, he'd just get made fun of there and have to walk home exhausted.

At least he was indoors. Today was supposed to be a little chilly, and he swore his uniform was thinner than everyone else's. Eventually however, the coaches had everyone gather around for some boring lecture about the benefits of basketball. But it was worth it for a moment's rest, that game was starting to make him sweat. This would also give him a chance to ogle at the volleyball girls. Maybe he should get a girlfriend.

Those thoughts came to a sudden grinding halt as all the lights suddenly went off, a few girls squealing a nanosecond later as the gym was plunged into darkness. So much for all that investment into the school. The sunlight from the windows provided some light, but this was the perfect light level to get up to mischief. He'd have to keep an eye out for delinquents looking to steal his pencils or something.

As he scanned the gym for trouble, his eyes landed on the gym doors. A blue little butterfly rested on the doors. A sense of dread, but also excitement washed over him. He remembered running for his life from seemingly invulnerable black hands and orbs with mouths. But he also remembered the rush of adrenaline and bloodlust he felt upon awakening his power. It felt good. But also terrifying. He wondered if the butterfly was here to take him back. Or worse yet, more weird monsters would come and try to take someone.

If that was the case, he'd need some way to investigate what it's up to. Maybe his other classmates would be there too. Now how would he go about getting to said butterfly if it left? He could always ask to use the bathroom. Or maybe he could just say he twisted his ankle and needed to see the nurse. Or he could slip away unnoticed, if he was lucky enough. For now though, Genki inched his way towards the bleachers closest to the door, where he noticed Hoshino and Daigo, engaged in conversation. Given Hoshino's permanent scowl it was impossible to tell if he was truly angry or if he just looked like that, but Genki decided to play it safe and not interrupt their conversation, lest he get an earful from Hoshino.

“Really, really, it’s—guys, it’s fine!” Emi couldn’t help but giggle as a commotion of basketball club members buzzed around her, trying to make sure she didn’t feel excluded on the sidelines of the gym. They meant well, but it really wasn’t necessary – she was perfectly happy “observing”. In fact, she could have done without the extra noise; the myriad slams of basketballs, barks of coaches and squeaks of sneakers were more than enough to overwhelm the senses without several people trying to talk to her at once.

At long last she managed to convince the club members that she didn’t need accommodating, and was finally left alone to her relief. Gym class was entertaining for her in its own way; she usually didn’t have to attend, but often did anyway. She could read something braille if she wanted, but listening was fun in its own right – and she couldn’t deny a certain smug satisfaction that she got to sit comfortably while the rest of her class had to run or whatever. As if to prove a point, she soon heard a muffled thump-thump-thump nearby accompanied by an annoyed grunt, and had to stifle a giggle when she realized it must have been somebody falling.

Yes, the gym was a nice distraction, but now that she wasn’t being badgered, her mind soon returned to the dream she’d had a few nights past – the one that had dominated her thoughts ever since, and had barely given her a moment to breathe today. What started out as hope had gradually morphed into dread; William told her she had until “the day after next” to find “his door in her world”, and that was on the eleventh. Today was the thirteenth – the last day, according to his cryptic message.

And her searching had been fruitless. The school, however suspicious she thought it was, was behaving irritatingly normal. Emi suspected that “a place consumed by flames that should be no more” might have referred to the wreckages of her friends’ burned-down houses, but given so much of their adventure together revolved around fire, she couldn’t be certain. And regardless, she couldn’t even pay them a visit to check – ever since her breakdown after the fires, her parents were excessively careful to keep her away from the fire sites. Something about “tormenting herself” when she paid so many visits to the sites after the fires occurred. She would have snuck out under some other pretense to investigate, but her parents were smart enough to keep closer tabs on her now that she’d gone back to school. And it wasn’t like she could tell them that her friends’ potential freedom from the Other Side depended on it.

Ugh. She knew they meant well, but she wished they’d be a little less invested.

Suddenly, darkness fell across Emi’s very limited vision. She initially assumed it was someone passing in front of her, but a chorus of frightened exclamations throughout the gym told her the power must have gone out. Weird, last she checked the weather was calm.

Emi gasped – was this her sign? Was this the start of whatever awful thing was supposed to happen today?

No sooner had the thought crossed her mind than a sudden shot of critical awareness struck her, stopping her mid-breath.

There’s a butterfly on the door.

Emi didn’t need to see or hear or touch the thing to know it was there; her Euryphaessa sense made it as obvious as if the insect itself had slapped her across the face. She rose from her seat before even realizing she was moving, making her way along the gym walls as if pulled by some unseen wire around her chest. Fear and hope surged in equal measure, fighting for supremacy over her. Hope seemed to be winning, pulling her toward the butterfly, but fear was close on her heels, telling her to slow down, to wait, that she’d never dealt with something like this by herself before.

There’s a first time for everything, she told herself as she neared the door, banishing the burgeoning cowardice from her mind. Besides, any one of them would do the same for me.

If he hadn't actually been glowering before, the sudden protest from Daigo definitely got Noriaki to scowl. As the coach wandered off to calm the students, Noriaki leaned in so he could hiss his response in a low tone.

"I don't know if you've gotten the hint yet, but we don't exactly have a choice as to whether we go, Personas or not. You probably couldn't summon yours that night because that asshole didn't want us roasting him with ours," It probably wasn't the kind of reassurance the redhead was looking for, but it stood to reason, if only because Noriaki definitely would have singed the guy with Helel if given the opportunity. "He won't have any reason to prevent us from using them while we're off doing his dirty work, so let's go already—otherwise, Mori is gonna start getting antsy."

The teen took a moment to gesture behind Daigo with a jerk of his head, to bring attention to their fellow classmate, as if it were all that hard to miss him in the first place, considering his height. With any luck, it would provide the distraction necessary to get a hold of the squirrely freshman's wrist and drag him out of the gymnasium before the butterfly got too far and hands started sprouting from the walls again.

April 13th - Afternoon

Nope. If it wasn't already obvious, Daigo could tell from Hoshino's face that he wasn't gonna get out of this. For a moment, he shrunk under the other teen's glare, only to relax the slightest bit upon the (needlessly harsh) reassurance that they'd at least have something to fight back with. That explanation... sort of made sense. Daigo wasn't sure he liked William holding that much control over them, but he seemed to be able to dick them around in a million other ways anyway. Or maybe the blue room and the mirror place were fundamentally different somehow, and Personas could only manifest in one and not the other. Or... maybe they just needed to be in danger.

The mention of Genki got a small frown out of the redhead. He figured everyone else would've taken the opportunity to run in the opposite direction once they caught sight of the butterfly again, but apparently their classmate hadn't been fast enough to avoid Hoshino's notice and now he was slated for execution too. Daigo felt bad for him, but at least another body helped their odds against... whatever the hell William intended for them to go up against.

He turned to follow Hoshino's gaze, squinting into the not-so-distant distance in search of their third musketeer. It wasn't very hard to locate him with the way Genki loomed over most of the class, but the nearsighted redhead couldn't make out enough of his face to properly gauge whether he was 'pumped up' antsy or 'freaking the fuck out' antsy. Daigo himself was firmly in the latter category and likewise would've assumed everyone else would be too, but Genki did seem pretty excited when his Persona came out last time. Unfortunately, before Daigo could throw so much as a warning glance in Genki's direction, he felt his wrist suddenly shackled in the indomitable hold of a student athlete's grip strength.

"Waitwaitwait! Lemme go! I was going with you anyway! I swear," Daigo whined as his attention snapped back to Noriaki, fully expecting to be picked up or dragged away harshly in the coming moments. He wasn't even trying to slip away this time! At best he might've been able to put up enough of a struggle that a teacher got involved and broke them apart, but with the lights out and a whole gymnasium to manage, they might not even care to intervene until the diminutive redhead had already been hoisted out the door, and Hinari Daigo was not a betting man.

"A-And I still can't see anything, so if you could maybe... let go for a... second... yeah, nevermind..." He weakly gestured toward the bleachers with his unseized hand as he pleaded his last bid for freedom before the outstretched limb went limp in defeat. The boy's gaze drifted sheepishly down to his toes for a moment, then back toward Genki. "Um. M-Mori-kun," Daigo called over, "Can, uh... can you grab my glasses off the bleachers? Hoshino-kun's a big meanie that wants to see me cry." Childishly, the redhead punctuated his statement by blowing a raspberry back at his aggressor. Not his finest retort, but anything involving magic butterflies was unlikely to be his finest hour either.

April 13th. Hinotori High School.

As Genki slowly inched towards the bleachers, desperately trying not to draw attention to himself, he finally got a closer look at the scene unfolding between the two teens. It looked like Diago was on the verge of tears. Either Hoshino was really laying into him, or Daigo was more than a little anxious. Probably both.

Hoshino grabbed the redhead's wrist in a pretty demanding way, more likely dragging him along, rather than Daigo going of his own free will. Genki swore he even heard a whimper in there somewhere. And judging by the head jerk in his direction, Genki took that as a sign of acknowledgement, and moved in at a quicker rate, until he was directly next to the boys.

As he approached, Daigo spoke out to him, asking him to grab his glasses claiming: "Hoshino-kun's a big meanie that wants to see me cry." Genki looked over at Hoshino's permanently scowled face. "Yeah, I'll believe that. Sure thing." He looked over to his side to see Diago's blue rimmed glasses just out of reach. Picking them up by the ear peice, he held them out to Daigo.

"Hope you're ready. I know I am." The fingers on his free hand clenched into a fist as he looked towards the butterfly as flashes of his previous escapade appeared in his mind. Basketball was all well and good, but now it was time for a different kind of exercise.

"Stay calm, everyone!" The gym teacher called out at the murmur of students. "We'll take a short break while we figure this out!"

A majority of students stayed put and decided to socialize while the rest were glad to catch their breaths. No one seemed particularly fazed by the power outage, though it was a situation that most found funny. Most of the jokes steered towards fueling the rumors on some of the people in charge skimming off the top for so-called "top of the line construction" while others wondered what else in the school was defective. Sakuya ignored most of it, carefully making her way to a wall and catching Naomi as the girl walked towards the teachers.

"Make sure the first years stay put, Susume-sensei wants me to find the principal," She told her, leaving her and jogging over to the door. She was a little surprised to see Ueno making her way to the door. "Excuse me, Ueno-san!" She apologized as she rushed ahead of her, pushing the door open.

The blue butterfly moved off the door as if disturbed by the movement. It fluttered to the left, seemingly following Sakuya. Where the girl went right towards the main hallway, however, the butterfly went left, straight into the girls' locker room. Once Sakuya's footsteps faded away, the blonde cat trotted in, stretching her limbs as she looked at where the butterfly went.

"I got a feeling that no matter what happens, you're gonna end up crying about it." Noriaki retorted with a roll of his eyes, though he ultimately did wait for Mori to run off and retrieve the pint-sized ginger's glasses before he did anything else, though he felt like half a kindergarten teacher for doing so, standing around holding the wrist of a shorter, more fidgety student. Once Daigo had his glasses back on his face where they belonged, the impatient teen wasted little time in dragging him along, assuming that the taller of his two impromptu companions would come along more willingly.

Of course, he couldn't get very far before one of his many new acquaintances cut him off, halting his forward advance. The former athlete eyed Sakuya carefully as she jogged along, barking orders as she went. The last thing he needed was for her to decide to jam her nose in his business in the middle of a would-be supernatural crisis, but luckily, her responsibilities left her just as blind to his presence as the girl she hurried passed in her own rushed departure. The weariness in his gaze only grew as he watched the butterfly circle about her before darting down towards the locker rooms.

Fate must not have wanted Noriaki to make much headway in his reluctant march towards the Other Side—he had only made a few long strides down the hall on the tail of the butterfly before it fluttered its way into locker room opposite the one he was familiar with. He stared towards it for a few long seconds, watching the last glimmers of the spectral insect's light disappearing into the unknown that was the girl's changing area. Then, finding his resolve, he suddenly yanked at the arm he had been clutching since leaving the gym, using the force of the sudden motion to thrust Daigo in the direction of the doorway.

"It's gotta be you," he declared with a nod, crossing his arms over his chest to lend credence to his sagely posture, "Mori and I would look too out of place if someone caught us in there. You, you might manage to fit in."

April 13th

Emi only paused a moment when Nakano startled her rushing past, but then picked up her own pace as well, sensing that the butterfly was moving. With trembling fingers – from fear or anticipation she couldn’t tell – she flicked open her cane, listening as it clicked out to its full length before pushing her way through the gym door, hot on the butterfly’s trail. The cane was mostly to make sure she didn’t trip over anything; the butterfly’s path was as clear as a bell to her, and she didn’t need any help following it.

Moving with singular purpose, Emi followed the butterfly as it took a left, then another left, heading down what must have been a side hall she wasn’t so familiar with since the renovations. That was no matter; Emi would have followed it off a cliff if it meant finding her friends at the bottom. As she followed, her cane bumped into something slightly to her right, and when her sidestep didn’t prove wide enough to avoid bumping into an arm, she realized it was a person.

“Excuse me,” she apologized hastily, pushing past them brusquely. Next she was met with a door, and the newly-attached braille sign on the doorpost told her it was the girls’ locker room. Excellent, there would be mirrors in there – maybe the appearance of the butterfly meant she could finally go back inside the mirror and begin her search in earnest. Maybe it was leading her there!

Or maybe it was leading her into the maw of some god awful Shadow.

That thought made her pause, her hand still on the nameplate, but she forced herself to take a breath. The thought wasn't without merit; she knew from experience that diving into these things with no idea as to what she was facing was just asking for trouble. Not to mention that while it was usually her guiding her friends through the world inside the mirror, she didn’t have nearly that much awareness in the real world, and this time, no sighted friends to back her up. If something malevolent awaited her in there, she’d be powerless.

Then the facade falls away like so much dust.

The memory sent a chill up Emi’s spine, that foreign yet familiar voice that she’d come to know so well ringing through her mind once again. She knew the speech by heart, having retraced it so many times in the past months, and she knew where it was going. And it was right. With that in mind, she straightened, determination in her sightless eyes as she stared unseeing at the door before her. So she was alone, so what? When things got difficult, it was her her friends would look to for guidance. She’d find a way back to them if it took her to hell and back, and no locker room Shadow was going to stand in the way of that.

All of that reasoning took place in the space of a breath, and for better or worse, Emi used the shot of confidence to push through the locker room door before she had time to chicken out again.

She held her breath.

And to her surprise, nothing lashed out immediately to eat her.

Emi took a single step into the locker room, letting the door swing closed behind her with a barely audible thump. Beyond the door, everything was quiet; her heightened awareness told her that no one else was in there, and the only sounds were muffled conversation from the gym and her own careful breathing. Almost afraid to disturb the silence, Emi swung out her cane in an exploratory arc without letting it touch the floor, and took a cautious step into the room. Then another.

A third step brought her within cane range of something that sounded like metal; probably lockers. Reaching out, she made contact and walked along them until she came to a corner. The butterfly’s signature, having momentarily faded behind the door and the walls, became clearer as she neared, and turning the corner Emi found it again, seemingly on the far end of the room, unmoving. She followed cautiously, dread building with every step, until she found the opposite wall.

Reaching out, her fingers touched smooth glass – a mirror! Instinctively, she pushed, but scowled when she found that the mirror was still as unyielding as ever.

Sliding her hand along toward where she knew the butterfly was, Emi tried to reach out for it, but found only cool glass, the butterfly staying in its spot despite her groping hands. After a few unsuccessful attempts to grab the thing – her hand just went right through – a surge of frustration seized her, and she pounded the mirror with the meat of her fist. After all that buildup, all that ominous shit from William, the power outage, the clear signs of corruption all around the school, and what, she was still no further? She was practically touching the very butterfly from that stupid dream and nothing?!

“What do you want, then?!” she demanded, desperately fearing that she wouldn’t get an answer.
