THE CONCEPT

Seven years after their graduation, highschool alumni are invited by an acquaintance to host a reunion and witness the demolition of their old building, which may or may not include all the emotional baggage that comes with it. For those who've flown the nest, a brief period away in their hometown to reminisce and reflect surely could be an experience. Or maybe life since leaving has been so dull that there's nothing better to do. There's a level of enticement to the whole situation—it's easily the most interesting thing to happen to the small Maine town of Delton in years, and the human nature of curiosity wins in the end.

In a deal between the district school board and Capital Construction, the 14 acres on which Ritman High has proudly stood are being razed to the ground for the company to build offices and expand into the area, and a reconstructed Ritman to be located between Delton Middle School and the community library; with improved sports facilities and a tech lab. The funding and renewed attention on Delton from the project are going directly back into the town's school infrastructure, furthering the district's higher-than-state-average quality.

While Capital Construction didn't become the fastest growing American general contractor without accepting whatever attention they could get, the increased presence of their representatives in Delton brings with them the lingering conspiracy that has been attached to any headline about the company since their emergence in 2019. Their swift rise to the top of the rankings and frequent involvement in government projects have led to many theories—from absurdist claims of Satanism and child sacrifice to somewhat grounded, albeit paranoid, connections between CEO John Yates and top brass of the US Army. The choice to build new offices in Delton of all towns has also raised concerns, especially in the place of a beloved school that has existed for decades undisturbed. Catalysed by an impromptu get-together, all of this is going to come to a head in bigger ways than anyone could imagine...

Oblivion is a character-driven, story-based roleplay that centres on a group of mid-20-year-olds that develop superpowers after a freak event during a highschool reunion, which naturally finds them deep in the middle of a conspiracy as they try and grapple with their new abilities. While the structure can be as loose or as strict as the group wants, plot points will progress through sub-acts that make up a larger main act. Character choices will affect the world and other characters moving forward, and while death is a minute possibility it is a possibility. I intend to run this for the long haul, especially depending on how far from the main story thread things stray, so devoted and dedicated players who aren't afraid of making world-altering choices are key.

for convenience, this roleplay is set in an identical version of the modern world where covid never happened

Interested. What kind of 'superpowers' are you thinking about for this?

I'm interested. I have a character/power in mind that is extremely powerful, but has a handful of key and very basic weaknesses. I can just post the power out in the open here if you want to see, or else I can PM you. Lemme know which you'd prefer.

I'm not sure what level of powers is acceptable or normal here.

for the most part, manipulation powers, psychic powers and spiritual powers. i don't want to put a strict limit on powers so much as i want people to keep in mind this is more grounded than it is comicbook capes and tights-y, because even a more 'gimmicky' power with the right player and creative idea could work. if you want to make a character that shapeshifts into some kind of beast form then that probably isn't going to work within a plot about trying to hide in plain sight, but if you make a character with the ability to shapeshift into other people, that works. sort of thing like a diluted x-men meets the movie chronicle. i will say i probably won't be looking for generic elemental powers and definitely no kind of cosmic scale powers. i'm more than happy to work with people on this and meet them where they're at because i want to treat things on a case by case basis.

edit: addendum because while i was out on a walk earlier i remembered that heroes was a show that existed and i've never watched it but i'm pretty sure it is a good reference point for what i'm going for

Also quite interested, it's interesting you bring up Chronicle as it's a pretty good movie to show how the average human would react to getting superpowers and I think is a good baseline for this kind of roleplay.

Working with the GM on an acceptable version of my power, but the general concept of the character is a moderately successful metal musician. In school he would have been a friendly, class clown type. Not the best student, got into a little trouble, but mostly tame stuff.

In present day he would be well known enough that having him show up for the reunion is kind of exciting(to some people).

I'm interested in this. An idea for a power for my character would be power mimicry, basically copying other people's powers on a weaker level. If that doesn't work then let me know so I can figure something else out.

wouldn't be opposed to it depending on execution, but bear in mind the only people with powers to mimic will be the main group

Thinking about healing as a power. As in, healing others and self through touch or close proximity. It wouldn't be some crazy auto-healing, regeneration thing for my character. Is this something in line with your vision @nodogs?

As for the character itself, I'm thinking about a posh kind of bitch, social media addict, good looks, but not much in terms of other talent or aspirations. In school, she'd be either a super bully or the complete opposite—not sure which to go for. There might be a better character arc for the bully version together with the healing power.

What about a power where...the person's ability is to suppress all other powers within their vicinity?

Literally anyone else to False Prophet's character: hey, can you step back a bit?

@Prisk Bully definitely has more interesting places to go as a character, but we might all hate her in the mean time lol.

i think it'd be really funny and unintentionally kinda cool? He probably has no idea he even has the power if it's a constant effect radiating off of him. Or maybe it goes off when he gets scared.

healing's a good fit! especially in contrast with a more not-so-helpful personality if you choose the bully route, i love to see powers that complement somebody's potential arc.

Actually I might not go with power mimicry. I'll take some time to brainstorm possible powers that would fit in for this RP.

For the personality of the character I'm thinking up, I'll probably go with social outcast. Was one of the quiet kids in school, but not the academically achieving kind. He's very enigmatic and says shit that doesn't make sense, mostly because social norms are not something he considers very important. Probably an indie horror game dev in his free time, seeing that he's spent most of his time cowering behind a laptop. Bit of a weird guy, probably doesn't get much sleep, but he's...nice? Honestly, invisibility fits him, but he's already been ignored enough lol.
