You prepare in anticipation for as long as you think it should last. Its his duty as a father to make sure his children are well-fed and taken care of, both physically and mentally. Granted, if it were a year long winter, that would be more difficult. However, on most planets ive been on that host muptiple seasons, winter lasts aproxximately 3-5 months. Frozen beef lasts just about as long. Stock up on enough to ration throughout the time.

I suppose it just depends on how much you plan, and how well you plan it. Life may nit care, but if you plan for worse case scenarios, and prep for those, you're much more likely to comeout on top. Any sucesses along the way come as extra.
