@Archangel89 I guess if your character is an all-consuming plasm it makes sense for them to take up a plane. Though your fellow Archons may feel the need to keep you within bounds.

Because being a goody two-shoes is not as fun as it used to be

I haven't been on the site for what feels like an eternity now, but I'm ready to dip my toes in some superpower RPs again as a way to hopefully get back into some fun.

I see we don't have a proper thread yet for the RP (or I missed it after 3 reads), so whilst the interest is still fresh and the inspirations high, I'll just leave my character sheet here. I've been getting annoyed at "relatable villains" in movies for a while, so it's time to create someone who is completely alien, unrelatable and doesn't have a sob-story to back up whatever atrocious acts they commit.

I understand the powers can be a bit of a headscratcher, but think of an unholy baby between Warhammer 40K and Lovecraftian gods to get an idea about the contents of his visions. Of course, more than happy to answer any questions you might have :)

PS: Before anyone asks, yes, the image was made with an AI tool. I've always wanted to see if it was possible to create something quickly for an RP instead of hours of searching Pinterest, and honestly I'm not disappointed. That said, probably one of the last times, it's so janky and I had to quickly fix it up at parts. It will likely be changed once I find/make a better picture.

@6slyboy6 Thanks for your interest, I like your character.

I think it's funny how many characters are some sort of completely inhuman psycho. I was worried about them not fitting in, but if that's the trend, then that works just as well. We'll lean into it, I suppose.

I will probably be rounding out our group with a handful of NPC archons, just based on archetypes that I feel the need to fulfill if a player doesn't have it covered. Things like a Barbarian Overlord or an evil AI, etc etc. They'll be mini-CS characters stashed in the Character tab when the OOC is up.

That said the full-OOC CS will have a section for these Mini-CS hider things too, so you can make a little depiction of your important lieutenants and companions. This will be part of a larger section regarding your Assets. You could use the mini-CS for things like weapons, etc, anything you feel like having art and a description for.

The other major addition would be a section about your character's addition to Gladius, the logic-defying dimension-breaching magic fortress which represents the growing physical influence of Chaos within Creation. You basically get a section of a fortress, built and furnished to your needs, about large enough to squeeze in a single large formation of soldiers, one legion's worth, + staff. This represents how much you can bring into the new Plane with you, until you find the Shard for that Plane, crown a new Archon, sew another wing onto the house and bring this Plane in sync with the rest.

Anyway, OOC forthcoming over the next couple days or so. Shoot questions and ideas at me.

The alternative I was considering to Ophanim was going to be an evil AI, actually. If that sort of archetype is a better fit than whatever niche I'm in now, I'm happy to pivot while the pivoting's good. Writing sheets is fun.

@Dead Cruiser A little segment of Gladius, built and furnished to the needs and wants of our character?

Seriously though, I think inhuman psychos are the way to go for several reasons. In the end, a villain is only as scary as immutable as their resolve to cause misery is. When they have realistic, nay, human goals and go about their business as anyone would, they appear more tame than if there was no rhyme or reason as to why they wanted to do evil.

Sometimes it's good to have a villain with a sob story and a real motivation because it roots them in reality, but if you want a big bad evil that everyone will truly fear, this is the way to go haha

It's also what makes SCPs so fun to read about

@Sniblet I feel a couple different ways about this CS. I think moving away from the Ophanim will let me make our antagonists more straightforward and "holy" without overlapping with your character. My main objection is that this character is from "Earth," which I am not interested in. Breaks my immersion too much if one of our Archons is just from like, Boston. Perhaps the Hierophant is from a technologically-advanced scifi or cyberpunk Plane rather than just being Skynet? Merely my thoughts at this juncture.

@6slyboy6 Mm, in this RP I don't think sob-story motivations or existential angst are really anything to have to worry about-- we're all here for the same reason. Just that when one typically imagines a villain, it is usually a Guy who Wants Something. Easier to write around than a Something that May Or May Not Want Anything, you feel me?

Anyway, the OOC is in the works.

I think that's exactly what makes the best villains. They know what they want, and what makes them villains is the ways they try get it. Doesn't matter to me if they have a "sob story" or they're just plain lunatics, it's better to have diversity in each villain's motive instead of everyone being "mwhahaha, I have the power, hence I have to rule over all". Heck, villains are the heroes of their own story. Some of them might think this is for a righteous cause.

I believe so far every character I've read leans more on the side of "doing what's best for their own interests and world" than just being plain homicidal. Not that it's a bad thing mind you. I also can appreciate the trope of a psychopathic maniac causing mass genocide just for the fun of it.

Hierophant is holy-themed too...
It's a whole big concept I've had for a while, reskinning it is gonna feel like work. I don't have a second backup character lined up. I guess I'll think of something.

Count me in as well. This is cool and good and I already have fitting character ideas for that.

I pondered between this and something more inspired by Tyranny, but it would appear that Blasphemous holds too much sway over me.

@Sniblet The very least I ask is that it not be from like The Earth. It can Judgement Day the fuck out of Htrae or whatever, that's fine.

@Khandov Welcome, thanks for your interest. One more booster for Chaos!

I believe it depends on the type of villain you are going for, and that's based entirely on the story.

But I feel that truly great villains, the ones who make you tense up and put fear into the hearts of even the greatest heroes are all shrouded in mystery, without a clear goal that the reader can see.

Cthulhu is so scary because he makes everyone go mad by just existing. Chaos Gods in Warhammer are primal forces of nature, and whilst some of them might not be straight up malevolent (like Nurgle and at times Tzeentch) they are still very alien in their way of thinking and do not yield, whereas their compatriots like Khorne are straight up just the gods of brutal, merciless murder. Skulls for the skull throne, blood for the blood god.

Even recently in anime, such as Jingoku or Chainsaw Man we've seen villains with powers and motivations that define the normal human goals of why someone would become a villain. When a villain with a goal crests the hill, the hero shouldn't think "maybe I can reason with him", because that means a reasonable men, and reasonable men don't commit atrocities without being threatened. But unreasonable men do, and when THAT villain crests the hill, the heroes should think "This is it, either we all die, or we triumph today".

Of course, motivations are good, but being reasonable isn't. One of my favorite villains ever is the main antagonist of WAKFU. He is driven mad by grief and is ready to take the whole world down to get what he wants. Yes, we find out in the end that his goals and even means are very noble, but he is still very much about to game-end the entire world, just so he can put it back together. In a way he is much like Thanos, a noble goal driving someone mad. But at the end of the day, the heroes should know that a villain that can, and is willing to do such things is not someone that can be reasoned with, and someone whom they should fear rightfully so.

I guess it's not a lack of motivation, per say, but rather it lacking any rhyme or rheason that makes a great villain. As long as the villain lacks sympathy (again, if that is the angle you are going for) and feels like staring into the cold, uncaring eyes of a predator, then that villain has my approval. I'd be pretty bummed out if we had a villain in this RP who wanted Chaos to revive their dead family and they are willing to do anything, or whatever. Big L, we've seen that a thousand times, think up something new, something bigger. The sky is literally the limit, our characters have a piece of the primordial evil, I think it's time to absolutely turn every plane we visit upside down, ad leave behind a trail of destruction and torment the likes of which our daddy Chaos would be proud of.

Plot Twist: At the end of the day we all just want him to say he's proud of us, and we're a gang of angst filled, daddy issue misfits

Okay, finally got this done. Decided to go more sci-fi than fantasy this time around, though I see I'm not the only one to do that.
