This will be my second year! I had such a great time last December and am so excited to be returning.
► What team color would you like? Do you think you'll get it?
I was a counselor in Green last year, but I'll go wherever you need me to be.
► Is this your choice to attend? If not, what can we do to accommodate you?
Yes, it's my choice to attend! Who wouldn't want to spend their winter break in one of the most beautiful places in Washington?
► Any allergies, disabilities, or special circumstances we should be aware of?
N/A
► Do you have experience with any winter sports? Would you like lessons?
I wouldn't call myself the best skier out on the slopes, but I'm not a beginner by any means. I'm confident enough to go on most blue intermediate trails, but tend to steer clear of any black diamonds. In regards to lessons, who knows- maybe I'll give snowboarding a try this year!
► What are you looking forward to?
I'm really looking forward to befriending and making connections with my campers. Last year I was practically the stoner mom of Green cabin and had such a great time getting to know and hanging out with everyone in the bunk. Hopefully this year will be no different!
► What are you not looking forward to?
If I'm being quite honest with you, I'm kind of dreading the Holiday season this year since I just recently got out of a long-term relationship. Nothing sucks more than being single during Christmas time and on New Year's, so I'm just trying to direct my focus to other things.
► Tell us a little bit about yourself:
Well for starters, I am definitely an extrovert- I love being around people and engaging in conversation with others. My family would say I'm quite compassionate and nurturing (after all, I practically raised my siblings) and that I am incredibly giving and always willing to help others. I can be a little emotional and protective at times, but it's only because I'm caring and extremely focused on those around me. As a friend, I'm very loyal and am most certainly the mom-friend out of our group. I keep everyone's well being at the forefront of my mind and according to them I am a fantastic listening ear and the first person to go to when you're in trouble or need advice. They've also told me before that I'm quite witty and have a great sense of humor.

► History:
At its essence, Gwen Thomas' story is about a young girl who had to grow up quickly. Raised by her mother (Elizabeth) and father (Michael) and alongside two younger siblings, the dark haired girl had a happy childhood, however short it may have been. Endless days spent running and cartwheeling under the hot New Mexico sun, copious amounts of laughter whilst playing pretend, and enough love and go around. However, the Thomas family could have never expected or anticipated how things would change in a matter of 24 hours when a sudden stroke left Elizabeth paralyzed from the chest down. In the blink of an eye, days became spent in hospitals, bills went towards medical care, and the family of 5 was forced to adapt to this new normal.
And so, at the ripe age of 9, Gwen as the oldest sibling began to take responsibility for her 7 year old brother Ryan and 5 year old sister Emily when her mother, wheelchair bound and now disabled, and working father couldn't. She woke her siblings up in the morning for school, braided her sister's hair, helped them both with chores and homework and taught them right from wrong. On the weekends she watched them as they played, bandaged up their boo-boo's when they were hurt, and read them stories before they went to sleep at night. It was definitely an unfortunate situation to be thrown into, but the Thomas family was lucky to have someone so nurturing and compassionate as their Gwen to step into her mother's role. Years went by and this became their routine. The dark haired girl missed out on her own childhood, just so her siblings could have theirs.
Soon, the younger Thomas kids were old enough to (mostly) take care of themselves, the prior years seemingly a blip on the radar. But not for Gwen- she was forever changed and different by the time she spent as the primary caretaker of her siblings. Her mindset had completely shifted from granting her own needs and wants to responding the needs and wants of others. Always everyone else and never herself, them and not her, which is why her father was so adamant that she go away for University. With her younger siblings now contributing to their mother's care, Michael wanted Gwen to have the chance of a fresh start and the opportunity to have her own life. And she took it.
The first few months at the University of Nebraska were strange for the girl. No longer was she ushering her siblings out the door to get to school, making sure they were getting their work done, and watching over them. Instead she was left to her own devices- delving into classes that she was interested in, spending abundant time with new friends, and just getting to be a young adult. The freedom was liberating and exciting, and Gwen was soaking up every moment of being her own person. It wasn't long though before she caught the eye of Wes Miller - a sophomore to her freshman. The two fell head over heels for each other and began dating, Wes being one of the first people to desire to care for Gwen.
But, as most people learn, dating in college is not all it's cracked up to be with Sorority row around the bend. After nearly a year and a half of dating, Wes broke up with Gwen after revealing he had been cheating on her with a bubblier and blonder version of herself. The dark haired girl was heartbroken, finally having learned to trust someone else and having the carpet ripped out from beneath her when she was least expecting it.
And now, we find ourselves three months later and Gwen is headed off to Second Horizons for her second year. Maybe the cool winter air in Washington is what she needs for a clean slate.
