The future of humanity is something that has been speculated for decades, or perhaps even centuries. What will exist in the near future? Sprawling metropolises filled with towering skyscrapers and flying cars? Laser weaponry perhaps or utopia? No. Not utopia. Humanity's future is indeed much more bleak, holding nothing but misery and stalled advancement. But suffering through decades of enslavement a select few have finally decided to fight back. The Cult. They are here to get revenge on those who sought to steal away their livelihood. It is the near future, about a century from now. All human advancement and technological development has been at a standstill due to an alien invasion in early 2014. Humanity tried to fight back with everything they had but the aliens had many technological advantages, ultimately resulting in the alien race's victory. This defeat left behind a broken Earth that was just to become another enslaved planet in the alien race's intergalactic network.
Thousands of humans continue being shipped off every day to work all across their alien masters' network, usually as miners or other heavy labour jobs. This came to be considered the worst punishment. Naturally, in dire times people sought out something higher than themselves, thus the birth of many new cults, or religions according to whom you're speaking to, began. Many of these new cults considered the enslavement of humanity to be punishment for previous decadence and began to blame technology and other things that the "old world" enjoyed.
People began flocking to these new priests, hoping to be redeemed. This of course, left them with unmeasurable power and control over what is left of society. Entire organizations with the sole purpose of kidnapping people into their cult began to crop up, even leaving peoples' one source of hope in chaos. This is where our story begins.
So in this RP you are playing a character that has been kidnapped by one of these organizations. Naturally you think you're being dragged into just yet another cult, but then you soon realize this one is different. You realize they're a group of warriors who plan to wage a war against your occupiers. As expected, however, no cult is without their corruption and this one is no exception. You'll soon come to realize that
they have been working underground to development technology for the task, but consider you a "sacrifice" to go out on dangerous missions in order to test it(which usually costs new recruits their lives). It's also quickly unveiled that such technology is not only intended for war against the alien occupiers, but for a war for complete domination over Earth itself...
-June 14th, 2014: The day that marked the beginning of the invasion by alien forces, initially thought to have been contacted through top secret space programs. At first the otherworldly forces attacked in small waves, being defeated within days by the world's military forces.
-November 1st, 2014: The arrival of the second wave. Again defeated by the joint effort of the world's military forces. However, also marked the beginning of wacko conspiracy theorists organizing.
-October 6th, 2015: After nearly a year of peace, humanity is left off-guard only to be bombarded by a stronger wave of invasion. The UN finally goes into crisis mode and governments worldwide begin declaring martial law.
-2021-2025: After several more smaller invasions and realizing that invasion is now an almost constant threat, nearly all countries are now under totalitarian rule and the world economy has collapsed, leaving most goods scarce. Police and military forces now roam the streets to quell rioting over even the most basic of goods, while also enforcing the strict rule of society. The draft has also been reinstated worldwide for all able-bodied citizens.
-2030: Humanity is finally defeated for the last time, leaving them in submission to a set of new masters. This war leaves most of earth's great cities in ruins. The first of many cults attributing humanity's current state to past decadence begin to pop up. Initially this cult had a relatively small following as most of humanity focused on rebuilding what they could.
-2037: Humanity is now under the full control of the alien race. The first of many forced shipments into intergalactic slavery begin, creating massive rioting that is quickly repressed. Humanity begins to realize this is a force that cannot be fought.
-2041: With humanity being in desperation, numerous other cults begin popping up. Many flock to them in seek of comfort.
-2060-2063: As different cults continue growing in power conflict between the different factions begins breaking out. This marked the beginning of corruption as leaders began resorting to bribery to win over other faction members to their side. What little remains of national governments fully collapses only to be replaced by theocratic/cult rule. The alien race accepts this, realizing it appears to keep humanity in full submission to them. Shipment numbers increase.
-2081-2082: The cult in which our story revolves around, Ares(named after the Greek god of war), is founded. As they were initially founded as a resistance group they are not popular as any realistic form of resistance is something that has been rejected and repressed by humanity. This forces the group to radically modify their teachings, instead shifting focus to redemption through complete obedience to the state(among other things), at least on the surface. Their real intentions become much more sinister, however(read the spoiler for details if you dare.)
-Up to 2131(Present day): The cults remain in firm control of society with most of humanity being loyal to one or the other. Most people tend to live their life day to day, awaiting the day when and if they'll be shipped off for slavery. However, among everything else illegal black markets and underground "free" communities where people are free to express themselves without cult influence now flourish. These are especially popular among the youth and rebellious types. They are also mostly kept out of the eyes of the more devout and the authorities by use of bribes.
I'm generally pretty laid-back as a GM, but as expected there's at least a few rules I'd like followed.
-All the regular rules of RPing still apply such as no god-modding, etc. However, because I'm GM I may take the liberty to throw in a few random events just to get the plot flowing, particularly at slow parts.
-The rules of this website obviously also apply. That means absolutely no detailed descriptions of...you know, people doing it? Romance is still allowed, however, if players choose to take that direction.
-I prefer active players. I do understand life happens, but if you need to be away for more than a few days please let me know either here in the OOC thread or over PM. If such a situation arises I'll try to prevent the plot from advancing too far without you since I want everybody to get the fullest experience they can.
-Please, please, please keep your writing up to standards for the advanced level. I generally enjoy higher level more in-depth RP so I'd prefer players who share this passion. I'm generally a quality over quantity kind of gal so if you're having a bad day where you can only shoot out a smaller response then go for it!
-Due to the nature of our plot there's bound to be plenty of mature themes explored; violence, war, death, oppression, corruption, and perhaps even substance abuse and anything else you can think of. Despite this I urge you all to just indulge and have fun on your journey through humanity's grim future after first contact!
Basically the premise here is that either you can side with the cult or you can join a group that seeks to expose their corruption and destroy them. If you want to know certain plot points in advance feel free to read my spoiler. If not, don't.
