Vladimir Manyuhin's post-apocalyptic rendering of the Lincoln Memorial.

TL;DR Summary:
- Earth has undergone a nuclear apocalypse following a great chaos in the 21st and 22nd centuries that depopulated much of the planet and set it back to a new dark age
- Hundreds of years later, civilization exists, but as isolated communities focused on subsistence, and some kingdoms of cobbled-together tech attempting for trade.
- It's a world lit only by fire - In all, the tech level is pre-industrial -- while useful technological knowledge for survival survives in some aspect, the means of manufacturing has devolved. Also, resource depletion makes redevelopment of technology much, much harder.
- That means electronics and things that are generally made with advanced industry do not exist. Blacksmithing, for example, has made a comeback.
- Humanity continues, though at a greatly reduced population level with a much reduced life expectancy due to a lack of modern medicine.
- And then the aliens invade, with advanced weaponry and tech, intent on goals they have not explained, using robotic foot soldiers to do their bidding.
- The characters are part of the same region; Independence, Missouri -- not the pre-apocalypse town, more like a community built on the bones, at the intersection of two rivers. Some of the characters can be part of the ruling class, the underclass or even, from further west, part of a tribal horde of some sort -- nomads with even less tech than the 'civilized' folk.
- Advanced Standards
- Please post the character sheets in the Character Sheet Thread.
- Important: We need to discuss social, political and religious issues such as the conflict between various cultures within the Midwest, notably tribal types (maybe patterned off of Native American tribes, but perhaps also descended from various other groups), religious groups vs. secular scholars, urban vs. rural and so forth. This can be very rich and interesting...and also, in the face of an invasion by outsiders, the politics are going to be a sticking point. Let's develop this together. ;)

So I was thinking... Since technology disappeared and humanity lost a lot of it's tools to rebuild that technology, would that mean tailoring also became important again?
After 200 years or so I could imagine that most of the modern clothing must be worn out or withered. Sewing machines wouldn't be the thing you just ran across so its probably back to needle and thread. What would clothes look like 200 years after the "Fall" of humanity?

Hey HeySeuss, I would love to join this, seems a little like Defiance (especially with the town name too) except less tech. Question, down the line can we acquire tech from the aliens? I had some thoughts on a bounty hunter-esque character or maybe a mercenary.

I think Brandon and Bjorne could be friends.

I think we could accomodate that. Bjorn's face will be well known locally, and he wont be a stranger to any of the permenant residents. There are bound to be some people who take a protective role towards him, whether or not it is out of pity. PM me your proposed details, and I'll put them into my sheet.

So I've been keeping an eye on your CS's and have a some thoughts about relationships.

Since Melody have done hard labour all around the community it wouldn't be surprising if she had met Bjorn or even worked beside him for a while. By the looks of it you worked hard, so that would mean you would have earned Melodys respect. So can we maybe be acquaintances?

Then we have Brandon. When did he joined the Militia? If it was around the same time as Melody they might have become friends or worked together. If it was more recently it's less likely that they become as close as friends but at least they might have seen each other?

I've always been very flexible with my CS s so it could have been about the same time as melody. How long ago would that have been?

Also Ham, I have some ideas, I'll pm you tonight, gotta get to work soon though. I just have one question for right now though, how would Bjorne interact with younger children?

I guess it was a little math to figure it out, but since she is 17 years old, her father raised her for 5 years and she worked for 10, that means she joined two years ago!

He loves younger children, as he is pretty much one himself, albeit in a much larger body.

Of course. Bjorn has done all kinds of physical work, and probably would have bumped into Melody at some point.

Just to be clear about Bjorn, he's not a regular hang-around-with-people type. The blacksmith pretty much owns him, and keeps him on a tight leash; nothing he himself has a problem with, but you know, he's got a set bed time and isn't allowed near 'bad influences'. He's almost always off on errands, and gets yelled at for stopping to talk to people too long. However there are times when he gets a few hours of the week to himself and his antics. Most interactions will have taken place during work, or as brief conversations.

He is friendly to everyone, unless they are 'bad people'. In which case he ignores them, runs from them, or in a few circumstances, gets inadvertently violent with them.

I expected that much SyrianHamster. I would think more of a "I've seen that guy, he is a hardworking fella and is therefore worthy of my respect." Simply, an acquaintance.

Yeah, that's the exact angle to fit the frame.

I'm not even sure that phrase makes sense, but there you go.

Good question. I know Hey Seuss is a major part of the Guild News though, so undoubtedly that's been a time eater the last couple days (besides real life obligations).

About your younger characters, Brandon. Guamá is works crafting leather and his sister is around fairly often (she is the hunting sort). Read up on the CS, but perhaps either of them could be mentors to one of the younger characters you have?

I may create a Character Sheet for her as well, but being 16 and living among the Arawakan, I suspect she would higher than an apprentice and skilled differently than the 'civilized'. So, I'd say she probably can more than hold her own with tracking and would probably pass on another mindset in going about it.

I think Alex could apprentice her in tracking since he's already got a bit of skill in the area.

Also, I totally understand RL problems taking you away from this kind of stuff. No rush, I'm just excited to get back into a good RP.

So have old world religions survived? I can imagine Christianity coming out quite strong in this; through my limited understanding of it, isn't there something to do with the end of the world and a seven year war between Christ and the Devil? Or have I been watching too many movies?

Also, are we still using the old world calandar? Months, days etc?

I'm not too sure about that war, but the old testament is much about gods wrath and punishment. I would not be surprised if there were Christian fanatics who claimed that the apocalypse is Gods punishment for our sins. I could also see a lot of the old tribal religions coming back.
