Ah, true, it would dissolve. There goes that way of utilization.

However, orbital satellites, ships, and moons with no atmosphere would be prime targets. If it hit the moon first, the moon's destruction would mutually assure the destruction of the planet. The ships would just be chunks of metal hitting the planet at great speed, so that part of the equation is resolved.

Eh. Even against a planet, it'd be an effective means of domination.

Let that light show happen, then warn the planetary governments that the display was merely a warning and that if they do not comply with your terms/demands... that there will be no second warning. All the while, they have no clue that it was just sand. lulz

Yeah, just repeat the process with a single 20,000lb slab of stone. That'd probably be more than enough to wipe a planet clean.

Meteors weighing far more than that have hit Earth, and the planet was relatively unscathed aside from localized destruction and an effect on regional climate. Hell, the meteor that wiped out the dinosaurs was estimated to be 10km across. And that would weigh THOUSANDS of tons, if not millions.

Yeah, but they never hit at the speed of light.

I don't think speed too matters much when you start talking asteroid bombardment.

On the topic of Mass Effect... I thought I would inform you all of the followingI am a firm believer in the Indoctrination Theory, so...

That thing is a convoluted theory created by desperate fans in hopes of making the best of a bad, rushed out the door, ending.

And was disproved pretty badly.

I mostly do this because I tend to run nations that don't have the capacity to ship millions of soldiers across galaxies to invade one planet. Plus, people tend to wank their land forces to an unbelievable echelon.

Hence, why I throw rocks at them. That giant mecha you praise just got slammed by 600,000 pounds of ice and iron.

Though, I stopped warring in sci-fi NRPs a long time ago on account of the sheer stupidity of the entire concept. I mean for fuck's sake, you're in space. There are free asteroids, planets, moons, and gas giants all over the place to exploit for resources. Why do I need to take planets from another nation when there is literally free shit everywhere?

Wars in general are normally fought on account of economics, which translates to resources. Those issues cease once you acquire FTL technology.

So you're saying... the writers for a studio behind Dragon Age, Star Wars: KotOR, Baldur's Gate, Neverwinter Nights, numerous in-depth Novels, and the entire Mass Effect series... couldn't come up with a plot hidden within a plot? Sorry, Khan, but your lack of knowledge is showing.

Ah man. You guys are putting my in the mood to start a sci-fi nation roleplay now.

For asteroids, even massive ones would have horrible defense (unless you went through the trouble of building an armor shell around it) so could be blown to smithereens long before it reached it's target. Therefore, it's only useful when attacking less advanced races, and if that's the case you can crush them in many other ways anyways. Plus, in my galaxy there's a powerful alliance which bans weapons of mass destruction (before this was in place the whole galaxy was almost destroyed), so if some guys attempt to use asteroids to bomb a planet then they will instantly have swarms of angry ships coming in to wipe them out, and said angry ships can't be defeated so easily.
