That depends on the archer. Some are rogues, some work as support units. Cal is the latter, for instance. He works as a tracker and/or scout for the group and, once in combat can take on a support role. Especially in a situation when we're up against a group. In that situation Cal drives the enemy forces apart bit by bit with some well-placed shots, separating targets from the main group. That makes it easier for someone such as Alex to get up close, lest Cal finishes the job himself.
Rogues are generally thought to work by themselves - something that doesn't meld well with a team. There are situations were it would be required or encouraged, but for the most part any sort of military collective would not recruit someone who doesn't play well with others. Which is funny, considering despite the fact that most of us are not rogues it seems we will be having some rather interesting / hilarious personality and philosophical clashes.
