I got home from work about 40 minutes ago. It was 20 minutes past midnight and I had just pulled in the driveway. I was latching the gate behind me and I kept hearing something strange. A sound you usually don't hear in the middle of the night in the country. And I stood at that gate like a fucking idiot, trying to figure out what that sound was. I finally get into the house, I tell my mom I'm in, and I start going to my bedroom when I see a truck pull into the old store where we keep our tractors. Theft is a common thing here, so I immediately tell mom and she tells me to get her pistol and she starts watching. No sooner than that, a man with a shotgun or rifle left my neighbors shed and got in that truck.

He was less than 50 yards from me.
I am so fucking scared right now, I don't know what to do withmyself.

First off, don't panic. That causes trouble. I know it's hard to do, especially at a time like that but don't. Second, call the police. If the man was still there all the better but I doubt that... Now you drink tea and do whatever you do to relax a bit and try your best to memorize what the man looked like. You're now a witness and that shit is important.

Other than that... I'm glad to see you didn't get shot. :D

I told my parents immediately. We checked the neighbors. Called the cops. The cops got here, asked me some questions, along with my mom. They just left in search of them, and my parents are outside on the porch with their pistols making sure they don't come back.

Tea sounds like a damn good idea but I don't think sleep is going to come to me as easily.

Hmm. . . Maybe if you got some money to spare you could try a motel. (If you don't have access to a friend's house I GUESS. I'm not Merlin the Wise.)

I think I'll be fine. It's just the shock of "Damn... that really could have happened" is getting to me. It's wearing off now after talking to the cops and I also have a gun in the corner of my room, so I feel safer.

And you're totally Merlin the Wise.

I hear you, I had similar things happen so yeah I highly suggest you get some tea, preferably cold since it'll help better than hot.

A lot of thieves don't like blood on their hands so the shotgun was probably more for intimidation than to actually kill. Just thought that little bit of info could help further calm your nerves...

I am very glad to hear that you and your family are fine! It must be the hardest thing ever to not think about how close it was, but try to focus on how nobodywas hurt and that you have protection. Although I can't relate to being near a criminal with a gun, I remember how I felt after I got jumped in a field on my way to work. It took a long time for me to trust anywhere that wasn't a lit street and I carried a knife for a few weeks after that. After this all settles down, try visiting the barn when it's day light. It may help your mind relax about making up stories that there may still be somebody in there when you walk by. I know it sounds dumb, but we aren't rational when we are spooked.

I really am glad you're okay!

Stay safe Squee <3

I'd give silly advice about how to calm down but this happened 7 hours ago so I'm sure you've got it under control now.

That's because Canadians tend not to get worked up about firearms in the way Americans do, despite there's enough firearms in Canada to arm 1/3 of the population. Out here in central Alberta, if you tell someone you own a gun is like saying you own a car or a power drill. It really isn't a big deal.

That said, if I ever have a reason to, I have no problems loading a rifle if I have a legitimate concern about my safety or my property.

I'm sorry, Squee. :( That's really scary! A couple of weeks ago, we had a shooter in the campus building I was in. I know that feeling of panic. But I'm really glad that you're all safe.

I feel the same with my shotguns.
It has always made me think if I should wear my ear defenders whilst in that situation. They would limit my hearing but would make firing the shotgun a lot more comfortable ....

Ideally, you wouldn't have to shoot at all. I'd rather be able to hear clearly leading up to a potential confrontation. Most people, I imagine, rather not argue at gunpoint.
