I was actually shunned for doing that very same thing once. Attending the memorial for someone I barely knew. Was a very surreal experience. Had to argue the merits of caring about life even if it's unfamiliar to you with an angry grieving person. Still not even sure I handled the situation correctly. Perhaps I should have just said nothing, retrospectively, but that was a long time ago.
