If I may ask, why do you think PoW has been able to last this long?
I sometimes ask myself the same question but always draw blanks.
I suppose on some level it's most of us having long-term plans for things to happen. And not just something to write about in a week or a month's time. I know Vilage and I have been incubating plans for things to happen that wouldn't be a thing until years down the road. Vilage I know has confided in me his chance to write about shit he planned out three or four years ago. We're not just planning for the moment in PoW but planning out to some final conclusion or beyond, it's made us committed.
Of course the RP didn't start that way I don't think and if you look back at the Spore-forum era Precipice of War it plays off a lot like a typical Nation RP. Back then I just had a habit of badgering people who needed to post to post. Then at a certain point we committed ourselves to the RP long-term and full time. To use it became less like an RP and more like a community, complete with its own
shitty memes (a few of these you could probably extrapolate out as tropes of other poorly put together or more "junior" NRPs than being strict PoW-memes/tropes).
Of course I don't think many of those apply these days since those were born out of our silly early writing more than anything.
So in conclusion, I'd hypothesize when you break out an RP you need to work it out like a community endeavor than just an activity. But to get there you need to first go through it being an activity, but one where you encourage out all the necessary activity to make it evolve out of being a simple free-time activity to a long-term activity, and then a hobby.
