I remember there was actually a period where everyone kept making "World in Revolution" RP's and it was the same core group of guys. They're all gone now.

Yet PoW chugs on like a locomotive run on turf.

Honestly was World In Revolution any good.
Cause there hasn't been anything like it in 2 years from my research.
Maybe someone should reboot it.

I'm not one to ask - I never tried to join it. You'd have to ask @Byrd Man.

It wasn't really my style of RP, imo.

Wasn't World in Revolution the one where the mostly just posted flags and a couple sentences about where their guns were at that moment?

Well, reading through it, yes.
Seems like it expanded so much because of how easy it was to make posts and claim nations.

I kinda expected actual IC length posts that were ungodly huge. Kinda like and this post from PoW not only breaks the 150,000 character limit but goes on into three subsequent posts!

Still it's cool that some of these have lasted so long. If I wasn't already swamped with stuff and completely lazy I'd pitch my idea for a RP which may just barely fall into the NPR category since the Nations are more City States than anything. The scale is smaller since it's a Fallout based idea. But as I said I'm too lazy to work on the idea right now since i got a ton of stuff on my plate.

I'm kind of curious about which post this is, you haven't linked it.

Knowing full well of course I wrote a post so long it could be its own novella.

Sorry. Kinda did a rush job with typing as I needed to get back to work. I was joking about it being a PoW post specifically. And just using a outlandish example.

I sometimes ask myself the same question but always draw blanks.

I suppose on some level it's most of us having long-term plans for things to happen. And not just something to write about in a week or a month's time. I know Vilage and I have been incubating plans for things to happen that wouldn't be a thing until years down the road. Vilage I know has confided in me his chance to write about shit he planned out three or four years ago. We're not just planning for the moment in PoW but planning out to some final conclusion or beyond, it's made us committed.

Of course the RP didn't start that way I don't think and if you look back at the Spore-forum era Precipice of War it plays off a lot like a typical Nation RP. Back then I just had a habit of badgering people who needed to post to post. Then at a certain point we committed ourselves to the RP long-term and full time. To use it became less like an RP and more like a community, complete with its own shitty memes (a few of these you could probably extrapolate out as tropes of other poorly put together or more "junior" NRPs than being strict PoW-memes/tropes).

Of course I don't think many of those apply these days since those were born out of our silly early writing more than anything.

So in conclusion, I'd hypothesize when you break out an RP you need to work it out like a community endeavor than just an activity. But to get there you need to first go through it being an activity, but one where you encourage out all the necessary activity to make it evolve out of being a simple free-time activity to a long-term activity, and then a hobby.

I liked it, but tired of it easily. It was more of a game than a story, I'm afraid. Lots of behind the scenes plotting. I tried to do my stuff with actual (historical) characters and writing more than stilted diplomacy and addresses. The restrictions and my chaffing under it are sort of why I joined PoW.

So hears a question than, if someone where somehow able to mix the easy to jump in nature of World In Revolution with the story of an average NRP how do you think that would work out?

Knowing what I know about RPers, it would probably be a mess. Uncommitted people jumping in on a whim, claiming large tracts of territory, and fucking it up before ghosting. When the going gets tough, RPers get going and leave a mess for other people to clean up.

Okay then, thanks.
I'll think about the topic more.

This is intentionally disparaging and mostly inaccurate.

PoW is fuckhuge indeed. I'd attribute that to the dedicated core playerbase though, vilage, aaron, googer, hugs, and so on so forth. Were I able to keep up with it I'd probably still be in PoW (not that I haven't tried...).

Also this list is pretty flawed, I think RP's should be judged by IC alone as OOC can be watered down by chatzies and such fairly easily. Needless to say it's not a good indicator of length.

By IC the top ten would be...

1. Void of the Stars: A sci-Fi Nation Roleplay
2. Void of the Stars II
3. From Stardust, To Stardust
4. World in Revolution: 1861
5. Precipice of War - We Write Under The Sign Of The Goat (RPG ONLY)
6. Civilization Roleplay: Rise of Races (The Tribes of Nova Mondial Want You!)
7. The Elder Scrolls: Rising Storm
8. The Darkness Descends (Fantasy Conquest RP)
9. Colonial Powers NRP (Reboot/New Thread)
10. Untold Empires: Legacy of the Old

Fixed that for you (WiR 1861 had 400 IC posts).

I remember there was actually a period where everyone kept making "World in Revolution" RP's and it was the same core group of guys. They're all gone now.

I wouldn't say that we're all gone. Many, but not all. And I am sure that you could find a game running on the Paradox forums. As Byrd Man said, it was kind of more of a "game" than a "story". I think the real problem with the game was that it requires a lot of work from the GM (stats, research, answering thousands of PMs, etc). That 1861 game (which Byrd and I were a part of) was like lightning in a bottle. This version worked, while all the subsequent ones did not.

I've seen WoR in the minecraft forums too, back when PoW was there. Seems to be a common franchise.
