Nyt tried her best to hang out in the back of the group, her nerves completely on edge. The helicopter flight had left her feeling nauseous and giddy at the same time, and the vast number of people with special abilities overwhelmed her on some days. First of all, she felt relief that nothing solely relied on her except the power that made her unique versus the others. Secondly, she was overcome with a tiredness unlike any other. This was the most action she’s had in over a year and she could quite literately kill for a nap, if her mind wasn’t buzzing so loud. Her eyes were tired but her soul refused to sleep. She was alert for anything, as they piled out of the helicopter to refuel and refresh themselves.
She waited until the last person stepped out and slowly trailed behind, singing to herself as the melody played softly, only audible to those near her. She looked up at the night sky and her jaw dropped at the beautiful spectacle before her: she hadn’t seen such shining stars since her and her numerous brothers went camping, and the chilly breeze made them all come alive. I wish we could go up there, she found herself thinking. I wish --, PLUNK!
”Ow! Son of a bitch!” she cried out as something struck her shoulder and she looked around for the item that bounced away. She stepped away from everyone as they either relaxed or stretched their aching muscles, and she bent down to pick up a shiny grey case. She inspected it and thumbed an oval groove near the opening. Suddenly, it sprung open and revealed to be a tiny monitor on one side and a speaker on the other. It immediately scanned her face and she, in turn, shut it quickly, looking around to see if anyone saw. Indeed, she had been spotted, by Adrian and Aja who stared at her like she was a blue-skinned alien asking to probe them. ”I’m okay. I’ll just take this and… study it.”
She turned away quickly and walked towards a sitting area, fiddling with the case. She opened it once more after placing her thumb over the groove and let it scan her face as she crossed her eyes and stuck her tongue out at it. ”Access authorized,” said a tiny voice and Nyt was surprised to hear it in English. She was even more shocked to see a small framed picture on the monitor of a girl who resembled her closely, but aged a little more and with long hair. It was the alien who had come to her when she was 13! ”Oh. My. Lord,” she said breathlessly.
”Nyt, it’s me, Din. I’ve been watching you more closely than you think – I hate to sound like a stalker, sis, but I just wanted to make sure you were safe. You are and I can see you’re part of an awesome posse now. I’m so proud of you… which is why I now have to burden you with this piece of information… Nyt, we’re not in the… correct timeline. Before our births, something heinous was going on. Through a series of unfortunate events – see, I get your human references! – we’re in a parallel universe, for our own protection. Just know that… mom and dad love us so much, it’s nothing like you’d imagine it, considering we were sent away. I love you too and I hope to see you soon. Take care. Indy barks goodbye!”
A tear fell down her cheek and onto the face of her sister on the small monitor. A lump in her throat from hearing she was loved by her biological family was much too emotional for her. She sniffled away the rest of her tears and closed the case, holding it close to her heart. ”Wrong world…”
