Extraterrestrial Vegetation Evaluators were created by the hundreds. They were made by humans much after they had taken to the space ship in attempt to find a new planet with the ability to support life just as Earth had before humans had destroyed it with waste and toxins. All the E.V.E's were all sent out. They would go form planet to planet in such of a good new home for the humans, and had been searching for years. Many died on these planets, though the creators of these being never thought much of it. After all, E.V.Es were not people, even though they looked it. They were genetically engineered. Science created them. They were nothing but tools to these people, and it stayed that way as the years passed.
When one died, another replaced it. It was no big deal, just like the machines that served the humans. If a E.V.E was injured and it would cost more to repair it than it would be to make another E.V.E, the injured E.V.E would be exterminated. They were nothing. They were lifeless creatures that looked, but would never be, human.
...
E.V.E didn't remember the last time she had been awakened to search another planet. She had searched many planets and none thus far had been successful of producing plant life. So many in fact had failed, that now she didn't expect any of these planets she was sent on would have life. So, whenever she was awakened, she focused on enjoying herself and being free for a few days before she would be forced to go back to sleep. So, after the ship had landed, and the claws brought her out, and the gases that caused her sleep wore off, she opened her eyes, and found herself standing on a barren waste land planet, she smiled. Tapping her feet, she tested the rockets in her boots to confirm they were functional and when she lifted in the air a few feet, nodded to herself and took off, giggling and laughing, twirling about effortlessly in the air.
She continued to enjoy herself until some sort of a sound reached her ears and immediately she turned, drawing her gun instantly, shooting out a blast that took out a portion of a near by vehicle. She flew a little closer, glancing about, then convincing herself she had just been hearing things, shook her head and turned, flying off, hovering about in the air as she used a device to scan nearby piles half-heartedly, wanting to get this part of the mission over with so she could enjoy what little time she had awake and free.
