Name | Kwelak Djilyaro, "Kwenda"

Gender | Male

Age | 15

Appearance | Kwelek is a young boy of above average height with a very lean, slender body. He has dark skin, but is somewhat lighter in tone due to his ancestry. His skin is rough and he sports calloused feet and hands from a life of hard labor. His hands and feet are usually covered in a white, almost chalk like dust that is found within the Moodja. He has a very sharp, angular face with a very well defined jaw line and sharp cheekbones. He has amber eyes and his hair is a light brunette with flecks of gold streaking throughout. He weaves beads, feathers and other charms into his shoulder length hair. He is also one of the youngest Ansharin to have received his tattoos, and he is remembered within the Dream as 'Kwenda', a marsupial of the Moodja known for it's unmatched speed. His tattoos are a depiction of an old folk tale from the Dream involving the Kwenda, covering him from head to toe with the red ink.

Personality | Kwelek is a rather respectful young man who listens to his elders and is eager to please. He can be a bit of a blind optimist sometimes; always motivated to continue even in dire circumstances. He tends to be a bit arrogant because of this, refusing to face facts. He's a bit of a slow learner, but his determination is downright inspiring. Even if he were to fail a thousand times, Kwelek would be too stubborn to admit defeat. Kwelek enjoys telling stories, and can always be relied on to recall a tale from the Dream around the camp fire. Even despite his love for his tribe, Kwelek wishes to explore Kedalup in the hopes of finding his exiled mother as well as contribute even greater tales towards the Dream.

Some of the other members of the Ansharin hold quite a bit of resentment towards Kwelek. They believe he was unworthy of receiving his tattoos as his skills as a warrior and hunter are sub-par compared to others. They believe his anointment to be a case of favoritism as Kwelek is the grandson of one of the elders.

Skills |
  • Kedalup's Messenger Kwelek's speed is unmatched among the Ansharin. What he lacks in strength, he makes up for with his nimbleness and powerful young legs. He was given the name 'Kwenda' for being the first Ansharin in two generations to be able to catch the marsupial of the same name.
  • Ansharin Sentry Kwelek was never strong enough to be a fully fledged hunter for his tribe, but his quick feet and keen senses allowed him to serve well as a scout for his tribe. There are many dangerous predators that roam the Dreamscape, and it is the job of the Ansharin Scouts to spot any trace that they might come near the Oasis.
  • Dream Weaver The sacred art of recalling the Dream. Every Ansharin learns the Dream, and Dream Weaving is a common practice among the tribe. Kwelek is infamous for his exciting recollections of the Dream that are quite popular among the children of the tribe.

Equipment |
  • Waterskin
  • 1x Bone tipped spear
  • Ansharin Pelts

Biography | Kwelek never knew his father, and he barely had a chance to know his mother. While his mother was pregnant, she committed a great sin against Kedalup. Kwelek's mother, deranged and rabid, murdered her husband while he slept. The elders wanted to kill her, but they knew doing so would also kill the unborn Kwelek. They allowed her to give birth to her son, and then banished her to The Dreamscape to forever carry the weight of her sins on her shoulders. This is all that Kwelek knows of his mother, and any further questions are met with scornful looks of both fear and disgust. The Ansharin are superstitious people, and what happened to Kwelek's mother is a topic of taboo that is avoided within the tribe. They act as though it never happened. Yet despite this, Kwelek was still shunned by his tribe for being the son of a heretic.

Growing up, Kwelek was never the best hunter. He couldn't even fight well. He was often belittled by his peers because of this fact, and he quickly sought to rectify his weakness. He would no longer be the shameful son of a traitor, and became determined to earn his tattoos and be remembered in the Dream. There is an old tale in the Dream, of an Ansharin who ran like the wind, and moved like lightning. He was the first Ansharin to ever be fast enough to touch the tail of the Kwenda. The Kwenda are the only creature that roam the Dreamland that the Ansharin do not hunt. This is for two reasons: one, they are considered to be messengers of Kedalup. As such, they are sacred and must not be hunted. And two, the Kwenda are so fast, so nimble and agile, that even if the Ansharin did hunt them; they'd never be able to catch them.

Determined, Kwelek spent most of his spare time between training and working as a scout chasing after the many Kwenda that roamed the Moodja. He quickly became the target of mockery among the tribe for his stubborn attitude. That was until, one evening, Kwelek caught the Kwenda. When he showed up at the fire pit for dinner that night, the other tribesmen couldn't believe their eyes. No one in two generations had ever been able to touch a Kwenda, let alone capture one. Kwelek's grandfather and the other elders decided that this feat was deserving of the Dream; and Kwelek's name was changed to Kwenda. He was also given his tattoos, that depict the first Dream about the Kwenda and how it came to be the fastest creature in the Dreamscape.

Although some are still resentful of Kwenda, envious of his tattoos, he gained recognition among the other Ansharin. People stopped remembering him as Kwelek, son of the heretic, and started remembering him as Kwenda, a messenger of Kedalup. Now that the journal has been discovered, Kwenda's new ambition in life is to explore Kedalup and learn about life before The Silence; spreading the Ansharin Dreams wherever he goes.

Name - Jannali Korindji

Gender - Female

Age - 17

Appearance - Tall and thin, Jannali is often compared to the trees that litter the Moodjar Plains. Her dark complexion blends well with her long, black hair trailing along her back. Her facial features are softer and rounder than most Ansharin. Her smooth skin but often cut-up hands are indicative of her role in the tribe as a healer in training under her father.

Personality - Jannali is known to think before she acts - as well as for taking her time with it. Combined with her reserved nature, she tends to be less reliable in high pressure situations where the correct choice isn’t always clear cut. As such, Jannali is often non-confrontational and agreeable. While she is liked for that very reason, others in the community try to push her to be more decisive, an endeavor that has so far yet to produce any kind of result.

However, one thing for which Jannali can be relied on is her love for and pursuit of knowledge: any time she is given the opportunity to learn, she becomes noticeably more eager and involved. Jannali aspires to know as much as there is to know about anything there is to know anything about - an aspiration that, at times, gets her into more trouble than she would like.

Skills - Jannali is essentially the second-best healer in the tribe, losing out only to her father, Jarrah. Her knowledge of the body, how to treat wounds, or the cures and treatments to various illnesses is equal to Jarrah, but her lack of composure in intense moments keeps the tribe from truly relying on her in those moments of need.

She also has the ability to retain and recite just about any information she acquires, a valuable skill in just about every walk of life. As a result, Jannali is at least reasonably knowledgable in most of the Ansharin’s jobs and customs, though she is often unable to actually apply her knowledge herself due to a lack of real experience.

Equipment - Waterskin, various leather bandages, bone needles and suture threads, and a collection of plants and herbs for healing illnesses, with all but the waterskin kept in an over-the-shoulder leather pouch.

Biography - As mentioned, Jannali’s father, Jarrah, is the tribe’s foremost healer, while her mother, Tatali, is a skilled hunter. Jannali took to her father more as a child, igniting her passion for knowledge and paving the way for her to grow to be a healer, herself. Otherwise, Jannali’s life so far has largely been uneventful.

Name
Koa Jakwela

Gender
Female

Age
19

Appearance
Koa is tall and muscular, with a warm complexion turned golden by the sun. Multiple scars mar her body, with the most prominent ones being a thin line carved over her right eye and a claw-like gash that runs from her chest to her hip. She bears these markings proudly, claiming them as signs of being a true warrior. Her hair is a wild black mane that reaches her bottom, with the faintest of gold veining amongst the dark curls. Amongst the jungle of dark locks, Koa often plants the unused teeth and claws of her prey. Her eyes are a sunset, with the softest of browns fading into a piercing golden tint close to the center. Facepaint isn't an uncommon sight, as Koa is often seen with elaborate lines and symbols painted over her face and body.

Personality
Reckless and bold, Koa's actions are driven with passion from the heart. With adventure in her blood and curiosity in her eyes, it's not hard to see why she and trouble are close friends. For Koa, respect must be earned, not simply given. To those that have gained her's, she treats them with the utmost reverence. Anyone else is met with blunt statements and rocky words. She can be rough at times, both verbally and physically. She's boisterous and unafraid, her mouth knowing no filter. Prideful to a fault, her determination to prove herself knows no bounds.
Despite this, she's fiercely loyal to her tribe. Koa will risk anything to protect the people she loves, even her life. Surprisingly, she gets along well with children and even more so with animals. She's respectful towards both prey and predator, careful to honor the life when she hunts. She's stubborn, but driven, and will go to the ends of the Dreamscape to achieve her goal.

Skills
Bubukari's Gaze
It has been said that Koa was born with the eyes of a Bubukari, a large bird who's ferocity is matched only with its unbelievably sharp sight. While a rumor, it does hold some truth. Koa's eyes are good. Better than most of the tribe's, in fact. She's able to see distant targets and take note of small details.
Mirage Cloak
The facepaint isn't just for decoration. Koa is skilled in camouflage. She utilizes the pale, chalky dust and the dark mud around her to create the illusion of shadow and light.
Dream Dance
Koa does well in recounting the Dreams, but she doesn't do it through words. Rather, it is through her body that she tells the tales of adventure and grandeur. Koa's dances are wild and passionate, each movement accented by the music and full of emotion.

Equipment
•Bow and Arrows
•Jawbone Knife
•3 Day Supplu of Dried Jerky

Name | Yala Jarra-Binalku
((Yah-lah Jah-rah-Bin-ahl-koo))
Gender | Female
Age | 23

Appearance | Yala is of medium height and was quite lanky in her youth but has since filled out as a young woman. She has the dark features expected of the Ansharin except for her eyes, which are a lighter brown with discernable amounts of green. Yala was born with her fathers hair which she wears in long locks that are most often tied back and unadorned for convenience, unless participating in a ceremony.

Personality | Quiet by nature, Yala is a woman of few words preferring to listen and observe, although she is not slow to action when it is called for. However, this has the unfortunate effect of making her seem cold and distant to others when really that is not case. Yala is quite affectionate towards those she comes to know well and shows a motherly concern over those younger than her. Sadly, she does not find a lot of time for making friends her age and spends most of her time with her mentor, Kirra. She is usually quite focused and her patience is long but not limitless, and her anger can be fierce when it's provoked.

Skills |
Dream Keeper (in training) - Yala has devoted much of her life to developing a deep and exact knowledge of the Dream. All Ansharin are familiar with the Dream, both young and old enjoy retelling the lore of their people, and always in ways as unique and alive as they are. However, knowledge cannot be stay true if it changes with each telling.
To ensure that knowledge remains consistent, a few individuals are selected from every generation to learn the Dream as it has been told since The Silence. They might not make for the most enthralling recountings but this process is what keeps the Dream intact and to Yala there is nothing more important than that.

Painting - Yala's favourite form of interpretation of the Dream is art. With a steady hand and eye for detail, Yala paints the symbols and imagery illustrating great stories on sand, instruments and on the bodies of others when certain ceremonies call for it.

Equipment |

  • Woven shoulder satchel

    • Ochre and dyed powders + associated painting utensils
    • Small waterskin
    • Small Ngarlak tusk knife with a rounded end for grinding

Biography | With two of her grandparents being Elders and her late father a brave hunter that is remembered within the Dream, Yala grew up with the esteem of most in the tribe. At first, it was expected that she would become a hunter like her father but, while she did show some natural talent, Yala became more inclined towards the pursuit knowledge.

In her fifteenth year, Yala was chosen to become one of her generation's Dream Keepers. Whether or not either of her grandparents had to do with the choice – as is sometimes quietly suggested by the tribesmen and women – none can say she did not take to her new duties with dedication. Under the mentorship of Kirra, Keeper of her mother's generatine, Yala spent the next seven years learning the tales of the Dream she herself would eventually pass on.

One day however, she overstepped her boundaries and asked her mentor about The Silence. Kirra's usually kind face immediately turned stony. Her words were spoken with thin patience as she told Yala she would never inherit that information. In fact, Kirra herself would not either. The current Elders had made a decision that, for the safety of the Ansharin people, their knowledge of the time before The Silence would die with them.

Yala heard but could scarcely believe. The Elders do not need to be told the Dream is the history of their people, the world; it contained lessons on what to hunt and what to leave be, Songlines which told the hunters what paths the animals would follow in certain seasons and where the other tribes of the Dreamscape lied in relation to their home. You cannot simply cut out what you do not wish to... Yala could not understand. When she argued as much to Kirra, she was harshly dismissed and told to meditate on her transgression; after all, she was by no means above the taboo.

Disconcerted, she returned home. Yala had always thought the Elders right in keeping dangerous knowledge a secret but it is one thing to safeguard against misuse, this was another entirely. Yala followed her mentor's advice and thought deeply about that days' lesson.
