I sent an email to my congressman about 3 years back. He got back to me! Now all I have to do is tell him what it was I was talking about again (the 2013 shutdown) and what he has to do to fix it (in 2013), and he'll be happy to help resolve my situation!

The system works!!

That sucks, I emailed my MP once and she got back to me pretty quick and now sends me weekly reports on parliament. But I'm lucky enough to share her political views, don't know how it would have gone otherwise. You should send him your opinion on how to solve the financial crisis, there's always one of them going on.

Dear Congressman

Give Vilageidiotx monies.

Sincerely,

My MP is a Dipper and I donated to her Tory opponent's campaign. Don't think we'd get along. I voted for my MLA, though, maybe he'd address my concerns. Unfortunate that's he's a backbencher, but oh well.

Write to them anyway. You may not have voted for them but they still have to represent their constituents, they're supposed to at least listen to your views even if they disagree.

Maybe political agreement is a simplification of the reasons my MP replied and keeps me updated. As former whip she's got to be organised and ready to deal with people. Plus she's personally committed to keeping democracy accountable. Many MPs aren't, I'd hate to live on the Isle of White for example.

Neither my local MP nor her strongest competitor (whom I voted for) have any power at all, because neither of them are members of the party that currently has a majority in the House of Commons. Even if I influenced my MP somehow by writing them, they wouldn't be able to do anything on my behalf.

Opposition can have an important role to play in setting the political agenda or keeping the majority party in check. But, yeah I can see how, writing to a candidate you don't agree with, to put forward views they don't agree with, so they can present them to a parliament who won't agree with them, could be a huge waste of time.
