Whoo! An archer, and an elf at that. Talk about filling the unclaimed niche. :D

I think it’s pretty neat how his family immigrated to Cyrodiil, given the political climate between the Empire and the Dominion, even before the Great War. I’m curious as to why his parents chose to displace to Cyrodiil.

His career with the Legion’s actually pretty awesome, and I can see it play out very well within my head; this is a man who brings a lot of experience to the table. I can also see Soul’s influence with the Wayrest pirates; they’re kind of his jam. ;D Also, very nice incorporating the events of the last game’s timeline into the backstory. I love to see when that happens, especially when the character suffered from the enthrallment. And to think he was so close to the original party!

And holy shit, over 90 years of service. You’d think the guy would have had enough experience to be a general.

Also, his sudden transition to being a thief seems kind of tacked on. For almost his entire life, he’s lived straight and narrow and served honourably in the Legion. Having him quit with a sudden desire to steal from people for a living and to pick up the skills to do so seems kind of like a drastic and unexplained character shift. There’s no reason he couldn’t have picked up thieving related skills as a scout in the Legion- doubtless there’s gates, chests of intel, and so on that would have needed a deft hand to get into.

Also, what drove him to want to fight the dwemer? It doesn’t seem like his fight, unless it’s about the threat to his homeland. Might want to expand on that a bit.

Other than that, looks pretty good!

They'll get'cha. And with my last post, I'm wondering what your groups' reactions to a 6'8" Nord with a warhammer coming out of nowhere to bash the shit out of the crab you guys are fighting will be. And with my most recent post, Francis will sorely be needing Qara'Sion's healing, giving Francis a chance to finally meet the Heroes like he's wanted to since Rihad.

Soul, you reminded me of something: what with the meet up finally feasible I've done some thinking. Blade is around six foot, Vendel is six foot eight, these are not small men by any stretch of the imagination. My question is though, could they use Cub's hammer if the situation arose?

See, I always envisioned the twohanders ingame to be weighted for a six foot individual as Nords, Orcs, even the Forsworn native to the area were pretty sizable. So using this, the Ebony Warhammer ingame is thirty pounds for a six foot individual. Cub of course, as we all know, is eight feet for reasons of [REDACTED]. Using some simple math we see that Cub's hammer, having been crafted for eight feet rather than six would make it forty pounds of ebony to hoist about. To put this in perspective, Blade's Dwemer Sword weighs less than half that at nineteen pounds.

This is of course excluding both Vendel's Battlecry (not to mention the long-standing tradition of a Nord dying on their feet with whatever weapon happens to be closest) and Blade's particular brand of "Hist-rage" (an interesting counterpart to Cub's poisoned bloodrage, the former increasing the user's vitality and strength through use of inbody additives while the latter weakens the body through surging levels of foreign toxin) Factoring these in, I think it would reasonable for either of our heavy hitters to the West to wield such a beast in as much as aforementioned parameters allow but with diminished returns as the battle went on.

What do you guys think?

Well first off, ditch the in game weight because that is ludicrous. Even if a person could swing a 20 pound weapon effectively, it would be a complete waste of energy. A more realistic estimate for the greatswords us midgets are using would be no more than 8-9 lbs, if we're feeling generous. A Scottish claymore for example, was typically just 6-7 lbs. Taking Cub's unique stature into account, a more realistic weight for his hammer would be no more than 15 lbs.

But to answer the question, yes, Vendel and Blade likely could use Cub's weapon and still be effective with it. But it would be highly inefficient and they would burn through energy a lot faster, especially considering the inherent balance problems with club weapons. If they absolutely had no other choice but to use Cub's hammer, their best strategy would be to pulp the first guy they see and then take that dude's weapon.

This.

Pretty much right. Bethesda's way of doing things in-game is weird sometimes, and there has probably never been a sword that weighed fifteen pounds in the history of history, at least probably one that wasn't ceremonial or something. With a weight of fifteen pounds as Volt said, no one in their right mind could use Cub's warhammer for more than a few swings if they weren't Cub, as swinging around even normal sized weapons tires people out, much less fifteen pounds.

Then again there's the thing about "what's the mass of ebony? How heavy is it compared to steel or iron?" and "what makes up the material dwarven things are made out of? What is its mass compared to other metals and alloys?" but let's not get into that, dohohoho.

I think Vendel and Blade would be able to wield Cub's hammer, although, it'd definitely be hard for the two of them.

Edit: Christ, eight feet. I often forget how monstrous Cub is. And good job on that last Cub post, bee-tee-dubs. Very chilling. And good action scene, Volt. My only question is, will Blade have trouble with his balance without his a good chunk of his tail?

Edit II: Electric Boogaloo: I also appreciate your research into the characteristics of medieval weaponry, Volt. Have you ever seen HEMA techniques and whatnot?

I was actually taking the possible mass variables into account when making my estimates. I figure the alternate materials can't be that much heavier than steel otherwise they wouldn't make very good weapons. What's the point of having an ultra sharp weapon if the wielder has to be TEH AHNOLD to use it effectively?

And I'm going to say no on the balance thing, or that it has minimal effect. Mainly because I'm fairly certain that lizards don't rely on their tails for balance as much as swimming. When comparing a lizard's tail to a cat's or dog's or most other tailed animals for that matter, it's not nearly as... pliable? Maneuverable? It pretty much just moves from side to side unlike mammal tails which move all different directions. Plus, he still has most of it. Just the tip is gone. And thank you! I do love my extravagant action scenes.

No I haven't heard of those techniques. I just started digging deeper into the history of martial combat recently. But I'll look them up. I actually watched a few videos on scimitar techniques to get an idea of how the Alikir might be fighting as well.

You said you needed techniques? Well, for any Yurop-style weapon in the hands of a fighter, they'll fight like Europeans, of course, and here's how Europeans fought:

Sword and Buckler

Notice how the buckler is always held far away to let the wielder more time to parry with it as the point needs to travel a farther distance from the edge of the buckler to reach the wielder.

Roland Warzecha is a goddamned KING when it comes to this stuff and he's where I pulled Vendel's fighting style from.

A pretty good seminar on leverage and how viking shields and shields like them were used. Most TES shields that are round like the iron shield and the steel shield have only a handle, meaning that they very well may be used like the shields in this video...but they're so fucking small ingame. You can just jump around the video if you don't fancy all the talking about finer points of swordsmanship.

Longsword. Not quite the big greatsword, but they're very similar and could be used the same way. The Nordic greatsword is more like a Zweihander and those were used to chop the head off of pikes and halberds, so they're in a league of their own when it comes to this.

Talwar. This is the closest thing I've come to to figuring out how Redguards might fight. Of course, it is a Punjabi system of combat but it's the only thing I could find. My main gripe about this guy though is that every time he's like, "Oh, he think's he has me. BUT WAIT, I CAN ALSO STOP TIME AND DO THIS."

Thanks for the links, I'll check them out, and the Talwar video is the one I found actually.

Also, I was having some shower thoughts and realized that the argument could be made that the higher tier weapons like Blade's greatsword and Cub's hammer would actually be lighter than their steel counter parts. The main reason weapons are heavier in Skyrim is because the weapon does more damage. It's a balancing mechanic. But in reality a heavier weapon in its class is actually an inferior one. And we don't use a damage system so it's pointless to use that mechanic. Seeing as Blade's sword was made by the Dwemer in whatever alternate reality they were in, it makes more sense that his weapon would be made of some kind of light weight but durable alloy as opposed to a metal that's technically inferior than steel.

Oooooooh, a Burkswallow post. I enjoyed it.

Hmmmm, perhaps. The alloy of the Dwemer might be pretty light, perhaps as light as titanium. Titanium is pretty light from what I can remember. And expensive...but that's a different story.,,
