Friday - Mather Memorial High to Orlaith Valley Trail and Park

Evander looked at Belle as she explained what he should do. Defense huh? Going against Aiden and Sebastian out of all people made him a little anxious. And from what Belle said, he was afraid this little capture the flag game would end in some sort of fight. He'd rather not risk losing control of his power then in blind rage. He slowly nodded at Belle. "Will do." He then turned to the other side, where the base of the others are. Fire. Belle didn't seem to be in a panic, which confused him. Shouldn't they be running by now? Forest fires are a real danger if not contained after all. However, something did make Evander stay beside the flag. It's like he has thrown away his own sense of self-preservation to finish this game.

"I wish you luck." Though he does think he'll need it more than them considering who he's up against. He stood by the flag with his arms behind his back, waiting for the two to come. He honestly would rather not use his flashlight for now. He still honestly did think it would be a harmless team-building experience but his alert bells were ringing ever since Belle said that Aiden wasn't exactly planning on this just being a normal game. Behind his back, ice began to form in his hands. It unnerved him that his mind was preparing for a fight - a real fight.

Well, time to see how this will go. Maybe he won't end up regretting going here after all. Or maybe he will. Time to find out.

Friday evening, Orlaith Valley Trail & Park

Aiden had only managed to take a few determined footsteps before he realised that Sebastian was not following. He turned back to his rival-turned-teammate, watching the other boy gawp at the flames. Seb turned to look at Aiden, offering him a smirk that seemed both impressed and pleasantly surprised with the boy's handiwork. Alas, the flames continued to dance higher, spreading faster than Seb seemed comfortable with, and he shot Aiden a worried glance that urged him to intervene.

"What?" Aiden asked, noticing Seb's expectant demeanour.

"I'm all for causing trouble, dude," he said. "But you gotta tone that shit down."

Aiden shrugged. "I dunno what you want me to, like, do." he admitted, getting irritated by Seb's hesitation. "I can only start fires."

Sebastian's eyes widened as he turned back to the blaze, which continued to gorge on the forest, and his mind seemed to swim with possibilities of what might be happening on the other side of the burnt orange veil. "Fuck," he uttered, and in the next second he was gone. For a moment, Aiden was contemplative, but the speed with which Sebastian had taken off instilled an excitement in him a small smile crept back onto his lips.

"One down," he congratulated himself as he once again began his search for the opposing team. "Five to go."

**

Almost ten minutes had passed, as Aiden walked briskly through the forest. He hadn't brought a torch, which he now beginning to regret as he felt his way through the black wood. Occasionally, he would call forth a ball of flame, cradling it in his hands for a few seconds as he surveyed the area, and then allow it to die before continuing along his decided path. It was certainly impractical, but it was the most he could manage whilst conserving his energy for more ... Spectacular feats.

It was due to the unforgiving darkness, in fact, that Aiden found his interests quickly captured by several specks of light, lingering up ahead. They gave off enough light to dimly illuminate the area around them, and for a moment Aiden presumed it to be the work of one of his classmates: but which of them could do this, and more importantly, what exactly was it that they were doing?

As the light-orbs grew closer, it quickly became apparent that the bizarre will-o'-wisp he'd been enchanted by was nothing more than a group of gentle fireflies. They seemed friendly, and took an interest in Aiden as they danced around his head. Aiden leaned on a nearby tree, deciding to take a moment to collect himself and enjoy the display, but any plans of taking five were soon interrupted by a tickle on the back of his neck. Recoiling from the bark, he whacked the back of his neck and inspected his hand; finding there a single, crushed ant. He looked back at the tree, seeing hundreds - if not thousands - of the tiny creatures swarming up the bark. But their movements were too fluid, too militant, even for ants, and Aiden scowled as he looked from them back to the firebugs.

Belle.

Smiling at her ingenious search party, Aiden spent only a second appreciating his friend's strategic talents before his mind turned to sabotage. "Sorry, Belle," he said, incinerating the fireflies with one flick of his wrist and a short burst of flame. "You guys outnumber us already. Gotta play fair." He placed both hands on the infested tree, and willed the heat within him forth: through his arms, out of his fingertips and straight up the tall, slim trunk, which now stood as a brilliant orange beacon as it burned. He knew that in a place like this, it would not be a challenge to find insects, but it hadn't stopped him from ensuring each of Belle's soldiers from that particular troop had been terminated.

Fleeing the burning monolith he'd created, Aiden headed deeper into the woods. He had purposely been avoiding the perimeter of the meadow, choosing instead to take the longer and more challenging route through the thick of the forest. It was not so much about avoiding being seen by his peers; his mission, after all, was to coerce them into displaying their abilities, and Aiden was willing to wager he could give as good as he got. No, the object of Aiden's aversion was one that he knew decidedly less about; he had no idea what Mr. Lehrer's intentions were, nor what he was capable of. Best to keep his distance for now.

It didn't take him much longer to find his opponent's base; a clearing, roughly the proposed 100 yards in from the meadow. Aiden crept as quietly as possible, scoping out the area from a safe distance as best his eyes would allow. He almost assumed the base empty, and was for a fleeting second furious that the entire team had gone on the offensive. That would certainly throw a spanner in the works; fortunately, as he trained his eyes on the darkness, he was able to make out the vague silhouette of at least one individual outlined in the moonlight. A male, so it had to be Evander. Aiden smiled.

Rubbing his fingertips together, he produced a ball of flame, and swiftly launched it in the direction of the opposition. It soared up into the air like a flare, arching in the night sky before vanishing back down beneath the trees and landing in the heart of the base, several feet away from Evander. As it caught the surrounding leaves and began to form a small fire, Aiden emerged from the trees; his grinning features illuminated from one side by the orange glow of the humble flame.

"Nice spot you got here, dude," Aiden said, before nodding at the pile of burning leaves and twigs. It sat on dry dirt, and it was unlikely that it would spread any further. "Fire's going. Got any marshmallows?"

It seemed they had a plan. That was good. This game may be the team-building, bond strengthening activity they needed. She, especially, wanted to mend bridges with the others, especially Belle and Aiden. With Evander staying to defend their flag, her and Belle made their way towards the others. However, before they could get any farther, the smell of burning wood and leaves wafted over. She could clearly see smoke above. Her panic sense went into overdrive, but it quickly calmed down when Belle mentioned Aiden.

Of course it was Aiden. The fire-wielder himself. Did he purposefully set fire to the woods? She hoped he wouldn't. He was already dealing with a lot, did he have to lend credence to his pyromaniac rumors? It wasn't until Belle spoke again that she realized what was happening.

Aiden is not playing as a team-building exercise."

It was easy to surmise what Aiden wanted. Surely his team was dealing with the fire. Evander should have come with them, really. He had ice powers. I mean, were they even still playing capture the flag? And what was Mr. Lehrer doing during all of this? Was he on board with this? He had to know what was going on.

If Aiden wanted to play the power game, she would do so. She still didn't understand what her powers were, but she was able to put together a base. She could see the memories of others. She could do so by touch, but could she do so otherwise? Could she alter said memories? What else was she capable of. She would have to practice later. Now it was time to act.

She followed Belle as they made their way towards the smoking forest.

6:16 PM, Friday Evening | Orlaith Valley Trail and Park

Brynn was busy trying to process everything while Aiden and Sebastian went off, mind whirling as she went through her thoughts. This is crazy, right? Thinking that everyone has powers, she thought, bringing up a hand and raking it through her hair. But Brynn knew better than that — she herself had a power. A power, she thought scathingly. How cute. I know I’m going insane here, yet I still want to believe it.

Upturning her hands, Brynn glared down at them, hating how normal they looked. Did she even need her hands to manipulate things? As far as she knew, her power was the ability to make things appear or disappear, like illusions. Illusions, Brynn thought, seizing on the word. That was her power, wasn’t it? Being able to create illusions, hiding things in plain sight or making it seem like something that wasn’t actually there, was.

Turning to the tree that the flag had been placed upon, Brynn paused. What was she supposed to do now? Hiding her powers away also meant never voluntarily calling them out. Well, there’s one point to add to the list of “surprises” Aiden McKenna mentioned, Brynn thought wryly, thinking back to sophomore year.

Taking a deep breath in before letting it out slowly, Brynn trained her gaze on the tree and concentrated, emulating what she remembered of that night. All right, tree. I need you to disappear.

A few moments passed before Brynn let up on the task, inhaling sharply in frustration. Of course! What was I expecting — me to just magically be able to disappear trees? This is stupid. I’m going crazy — that’s what this is, she thought angrily, but her thoughts were interrupted by a sharp stinging smell — smoke. A fire? Brynn thought, turning around. Her eyes widened when they caught on the orange curtain of flame that was quickly closing in on her side of the forest. Fuck you, Aiden McKenna. This is not teambuilding in the slightest.

Panic flowed through Brynn’s veins as the fire snarled and snapped branches in front of her, advancing. Should she run? Then what about the flag? Did Aiden McKenna really start this enormous fire? Was her life really in danger? And if so, why in the world did it have to be during this class, Social Conscience? Chemistry labs or math finals she could understand, with all the safety hazards of messing with strong acids and pulling one too many all-nighters. But why here and now, when she was on a camping trip in the woods and playing capture the flags with a bunch of people she’d never in her right mind talk to?

This is stupid, Brynn concluded as she looked up at the flag in the tree, but I have to know if it’s not just me going crazy.

Training her gaze on the flag, Brynn tried again: Alright, flag. I need you to fucking disappear.

Friday - Mather Memorial High to Orlaith Valley Trail and Park

The silence lasted much more longer than he had originally hoped. When the girls had gone off to get to the flag, he had stayed there with no one other than himself. He looked at his palms as he had formed a small flat circle with an engraving on it. It was a very simple 'E' but enough to make him smile. Baby steps, his father would often tell him when he practiced. Because that's just how it is. Since he couldn't openly practice it, he hadn't exactly been able to use them in more practical ways. He looked up once more to see yet another fire that had been started not too far from them. He slipped the ice object into his pockets as he took a deep breath.

Aiden.

That was who seemed to have been responsible for the fire. Belle said as much when she immediately told them that Aiden was not playing a team-building game. He also had a history of being labelled a 'pyromaniac'. While he didn't exactly believe in these rumors, he certainly considered them now. Great. Ice versus fire - it was obvious which one would win. But it was better to put up some form of resistance to at least make this interesting. But, again, there was really no proof for him to accuse him of being a fire manipulating hyperhuman.

A stream of bright orange caught his attention as it shot up towards the sky and it landed near him, making the the leaves and twigs in that area burst into flames. He moved ever so slightly away from the burning pile, finding the close quarter with fire quite uncomfortable. Evander looked at the burning pile and then towards where the fireball had come from. "Aiden." He said, figuring out who it was before his eyes could even adjust to see him. He was a hyperhuman, like him. He wasn't sure if he was supposed to be relieved because he met someone like him, or if she should be worried since this just might not end up like what he originally thought this camping would be. He let out a single syllable chuckle, "They're back at camp, unfortunately enough. You should have warned me first - would have brought a whole bunch if I knew you could do that."

He was the only thing that stood between Aiden and the flag... but something told him that Aiden came here for a completely other reason. Wait, actually, Belle told that to him. "So you're a hyperhuman too huh? Fire too, that's nice." He was awaiting for him to make any other moves. This might be the situation, but for Evander, they were still playing capture the flag.

6:14 PM, Friday Evening | Orlaith Valley Trail and Park

The woods rushed by as Sebastian departed the newly insane Aiden, running back towards the glowing orange horizon that 'protected' the team's flag. The fire was spreading rapidly through the woods, snaking around trees as though it had a mind of its own before it suddenly moved straight towards Sebastian. Forced to change course, Sebastian took a sharp turn, nearly wiping out in the loose dirt as he adjusted his path to avoid the rising flames. Dense smoke hung in the air beneath the forest's canopy as Sebastian closed in on where he had last seen Brynn. Tears began to stream down his cheeks, his eyes stinging from the acrid air as he looked around for Brynn. Without warning, the flames suddenly changed direction, two lines of flame burning towards Sebastian forcing him to move again.

"AIDEN!" Sebastian yelled out, coughing on the smoke. "Fuck off, Brynn is in danger." The heat was suffocating as it threatened to surround Sebastian as he desperately tried to catch a glimpse of Brynn. Rubbing ash from his eyes, Sebastian couldn't seem to focus his eyes and then suddenly there was a whiff of something sweet. It wasn't natural, his noise twitched, it was a manufactured scent almost like a...

Perfume!

Sebastian's nose isolated the smell, it felt as though he could see through the smells of the forest while his eyes were blinded by the smoke. Rushing forward, Sebastian ran through the wall of fire, the heat leaving bright red marks on his exposed skin as he moved towards Brynn. Without stopping, Sebastian swept the girl up into his arms and beelined it for the meadow. Coming to a halt as he exited the thick woods, Sebastian nearly dropped Brynn as he collapsed to his knees, desperately inhaling the cleaner air.

"Aiden." Sebastian gasped, as he looked at Brynn. "Fucker is going to kill every damn one of us."

6:21 PM, Friday Evening | Orlaith Valley Trail and Park

Slinking back into the woods, Jonas released control of Aiden's flames as he relaxed his grip in the ancient gauntlet. Sebastian was faster, but not as fast as he would have hoped. There was still something holding the speedster back though, either that or he didn't fear death. It was interesting, Sebastian had every quality of a selfish person and yet instead of worrying about his own life, he had gone back into the fire for Brynn.

"Could be a liability." Jonas muttered to himself as he moved through the woods. Staying hidden in the darkness, Jonas cast a shroud over himself as he climbed into the branches. Moving through the darkness, Jonas came across the pair of Winter and Belle as the two moved towards the flames. They were on edge, obviously the flames had alerted them to the changes in the game, yet Belle was still encouraging Winter forward. Interesting given Winter's lack of defensive abilities, especially against powers like Aiden's. With a wave of the gauntlet, grass and brush parted as a blur of motion moved past the two girls. Circling around, it ran between the pair tossing Winter and Belle to the ground as it past by.

But with the blur gone, Jonas summoned the flames as the darkness was suddenly illuminated. Disappearing from his perch, the Venari moved through the tree tops before dropping to the woods below. Out of the corner of his eyes, Jonas caught a glimpse of familiar red fur, a common red fox but unlike most of its kin it didn't simply run at the sight of the man. It's amber eyes studied Jonas, watching his actions and taking them in with an almost unnatural level of curiousity. A knowing smirk crossed his face as Jonas put a fingers to his lips and slipped into the night.

B e l l e D ' V o i r e with FantasyChic as Winter Carlyle

The two girls had been drawing closer to what they had presumed to be their opponent's base camp for several minutes, carefully skirting the edges of the fire that marked Aiden's new lease of life. Belle's insects amassed behind her, trunks and branches teeming with centipedes and ants and beetles while a low hum of beating wings seemed to emanate from her very person. She froze as Sebastian's voice exploded from the darkness, a frustrated yell that startled her - but not as much as the response it prompted, as a clump of flies and wasps flew past her and towards the noise at a furious pace, with bugs on the ground drawing closer to her feet in some kind of protective stance. She shook off the faint feeling of dread and instead looked back at Winter, giving her a determined nod as she tried to encourage the duo forwards.

There was a light breeze and the grass and brush parted for some invisible force that came at them, flashing past before circling and hitting them on a second pass and throwing them to the side. Belle hit the ground hard and pain skipped through her arm as she landed awkwardly on her shoulder, anger overtaking her face as another, larger clump of insect flew off in the direction that the blur had gone. Sebastian. Belle thought, her inner monologue hissing the boy's name back to her. They must be getting closer. She hoped Evander was alright back with the flag.
"Winter? Are you okay?" She asked as she picked herself up, bugs dropping from her clothes as she left the ground.

Winter stood up and dusted herself off. The breeze and knockback could only have been Sebastian, and it just confirmed what they already knew. Aiden wasn't playing a game anymore. She looked over to Belle and nodded, "I'm fine. Are we still going to find the flag?" She asked purely because this was all insane. The forest was burning down around them, it was clear that the others weren't prepared, and Mr. Lehrer was not stepping in. Did he want them to use their powers in this situation?

And what could she do? As far as she knew, she could view memories and that's it! She didn't have time to play around with her powers. She kind of hoped that, if what her suspicions told her, that Mr. Lehrer would have helped her recognize her gifts and help determine what else she could do? Instead they took a trip to the forest and were now putting their lives on the line, not to mention the lives of the animals and plant life in the forest. For what purpose? Aiden needed to be stopped.

"Whatever you did to me, you need to do to everyone else, because whoever that man was, he was on some dark business, and we are severely outmatched." Belle replied, taking a breath to re-establish herself and plan the best way to proceed. "But otherwise...I think 'capture the flag' is an easy way to get us in a competitive spirit, and obviously there are some people in our class who are willing to give themselves an edge."

Belle felt a gust of heat burst from the treeline, and behind it, the orange flickerings of Aiden's recklessly-induced bushfire roared. Whatever laid beyond that wall was lost; the fire was impassable, and the smoke beginning to drift through grew thicker and thicker with each passing second. Whether it had been Aiden's intention or not, he had brought the game to a close.
"We need to leave. Back to the camp!" Belle yelled, her voice nearly getting drowned out by the approaching blaze.

The intensity of the fire grew too quickly and, finally, it seemed like the game was over. Belle had the right idea, they needed to get back to Evander. Aiden was likely making his way over there, and if the breeze as any indication, so was Sebastian and, maybe, Brynn. She followed Belle's lead and made her way back to the camp.

As she ran, she thought about what she could do, and she had an idea. If she could get close to Aiden, perhaps she could use her abilities to help him. Was he bent on revenge? Was he angry? Or was this just something he was doing for fun. He wasn't a bad guy - and Winter wanted to remind him of such.

A collaboration between @Tyler, @Polaris North & @Roman

Friday evening, Orlaith Valley Trail & Park

Aiden eased his stance as Evander greeted him. A hyperhuman 'too'? he repeated in his head, mulling over the words the boy had uttered. It would seem that Evander was making little effort to conceal his own Hype status... Which, whilst indeed convenient, would force Aiden into taking a different approach. He'd been expecting to have to be a good degree more forceful. But, he reasoned, Evander was one of the most intelligent kids in the class. He was definitely smart enough to realise that Aiden would get what he wanted, one way or another.

"Yeah," he replied, a certain brazen quality to his admission. "Surprise!" he mocked. "But nah, it's not that special. Not in this class, anyway. Seb can move faster than you can blink, and Belle's got this whole bug thing going on. Pretty sure Winter's got mind powers or whatever."

As he spoke, he was slowly pacing around the clearing, keeping his distance from Evander. He really had not even an inkling over what the boy was capable of, and no rush of adrenaline was strong enough to blur Aiden's judgement enough that he would underestimate the others. Resting upon Evander's calm demeanour, Aiden decided that he should keep this exchange peaceful. Looking to the skies, he propelled both arms upwards, sending a pillar of fire surging into the blackness. It stood for a moment, sustained as a single beam of swirling flame, before Aiden's grip faltered: the beacon skewed, collapsed, and dissipated. But it had certainly been enough to make the others aware of their location.

Regaining his composure, and slightly out of breath, Aiden turned back to Evander. "So then," he said, expectantly. "Fair is fair. I've shown you mine, now you show me yours." The look in Aiden's eye warned Evander that, whilst Aiden was willing to play show-and-tell for now, he knew exactly what he wanted, and was dead set on getting it.

Evander simply stared at the male, finding little interest in his behavior. However, it would seem that Aiden did have more information about the class. He couldn't help but let out a small chuckle upon finding it out. "Is that so? So this Social Conscience class is just an excuse to get a bunch of hyperhumans together?" He said with a small shake of his head. If that was the case, then Brynn must have a power as well. But the question was why they were collected. Did they want to create some sort of superhero team? Ha, that would be funny.

In the meantime, he was following Aiden's movement. Last thing he wanted was him being surprised by the male. Again, fire really is practically his weakness and this man had control over that particular element. Just his luck huh? The one who could easily beat him was the one who wanted to fight... or well, is his 'enemy' for now.

He watched as the male released a pillar of fire towards the sky which illuminated the dark sky and the surrounding area. The orange pillar was enough to make him extremely nervous. So he had that much power in him? Though when it disappeared, it seemed it was because of his lack for stamina to keep it going. Evander listened to him as he urged for him to also show his power. The look the male was giving him told him that this wouldn't exactly end on the same peaceful note from when it started.

"Fine. Though I don't have something as spectacular as yours." He then finally showed his hands, which he had been hiding behind him unintentionally, and ice had been forming on it. Though, after a few seconds, the frost climbed up to the sleeves of his jacket. He took a deep breath and ice spikes started to form around him, a total of five. They were small, barely reaching an inch in size, but one end was pointed. He then thrust his arm forward, sending the spikes towards a tree near Aiden. He then let out a breath as he lowered his arm, the frost not disappearing from his sleeves but has nearly disappeared from his hands. "That's it." He said, giving the male a small shrug. It was a good thing it was night and it was cool - it made it easy to freeze the water vapor around him.

Aiden watched intently as Evander conjured forth the cold, producing shards of ice that were sent hurtling through the air and passed uncomfortably close to Aiden before embedding themselves in a nearby tree. So, Evander had powers over ice, it would seem... The juxtaposition between them both was not lost on Aiden. The pair really were opposites, from their Hyperhuman powers down to their contrasting fiery and cool temperaments.

Before Aiden could air his observation, or make any sort of comment on Evander's display, he was caught off-guard by movement in the forest, just behind the tree that Evander had targeted. Aiden shot him a concerned glance. Readying himself, he summoned balls of flame to each hand, ready to be thrown should anyone make an ill-advised decision. As he waited for the figure to present themselves from the shadows, Aiden could only hope that Evander was similarly prepared.

"Who's there?" he called out, an air of authority to his voice. "Come on out. We won't bite."

"I don't think I'm the one to be worrying about being bitten, Aiden." Belle replied coolly, emerging from behind a large, decrepit oak tree, Winter slightly behind her. She looked at the fire coating his hands, and furrowed her brow, concerned. "Put the fire away, Aiden. Half the damn woods are aflame. You're being reckless."

Aiden lowered his arms as Belle emerged, the fire in them dying out almost as quickly as it had burst forth. He had no interest in fighting Belle, and he assumed she had a similar stance. Of course, Aiden had faith in himself that he could react quickly enough should the situation require it, but deep down he just knew it wasn't necessary.

"You say reckless," he cooed. "I say resourceful. The secret is well and truly, 'out'." he said, gesturing towards the frozen barbs that protruded from the tree beside Belle. "Sometimes, all it takes is a little pressure to turn coal into diamonds." He smiled with a mix of smugness and sincerity; Aiden was decidedly pleased with himself.

"All we needed was for Winter to make everyone remember and Jonas would have explained everything, but you are putting us all at risk with this behaviour! You can't control yourself or your fire," she said, throwing an arm out behind her where the pale orange glow from deeper in the woods drew her outline against the blaze, "and you are destroying this forest. Half of us are probably dealing with smoke inhaliation and there are more than a few nasty burns going around."

She stepped forward, unsure how Aiden would react - he was acting like he was on a high, enveloped in his own show of power and an unnecessary desire to 'out' what were barely half-secrets to begin with. "Now come on, both of you. We need to get back to camp, control this blaze, and then get some real answers from our erstwhile 'teacher'."

Aiden rolled his eyes, but knew there was little sense in arguing with Belle. Besides, he'd nothing to gain from it: he'd already gotten what he wanted from the evening's activities, and now the suggestion of confronting Jonas was an enticing one. Mr. Lehrer sure did have some explaining to do.

He shot Evander a glance that he hoped would communicate his newfound respect for the icy student, but said nothing. Turning back to the girls, Aiden found himself distracted: there, sat comfortably but a few feet behind them, was a familiar creature, it's red fur glistening in the moonlight and shimmering in the orange warmth of the blaze. He could have sworn that the fox gave him coy wink before darting off into the undergrowth and vanishing. Snapping back to reality, Aiden decided that Belle was, as usual, speaking from a place of common sense. Finally relinquishing his mission, though not without victory, he followed the pair back through the burning woodland in search of answers.

In search of Jonas Lehrer.

B R Y N N R E Y E S & S E B A S T I A N S C O T T:

6:19 PM, Friday Evening | Orlaith Valley Trail and Park

The fire crackled beside her, but Brynn was too focused to notice it because she saw it. The empty tree. The brilliant red had disappeared, reappearing only after she blinked. It’s real — it’s all real, Brynn thought, relaxing in both shock and relief. She was about to turn around and examine the fire — and how quickly her demise would likely arrive — when her feet left the ground.

“Wh—” Brynn cried, but found herself cut short as a pair of arms caught her. She vaguely registered wind whipping past as she was carried forwards into the dense woods beyond the fire, recovering soon enough to catch herself as she was released. Spinning around, she saw Sebastian collapse to his knees, panting. “My god, Sebastian? Are you alright?” she asked, kneeling down beside the boy and looking him over. His clothes were singed black and brown in places, and his skin showed signs of faint blistering as well. “Did you… Did you run through the fire?”

"Seemed like a logical choice at the time." Sebastian replied as he leaned back, arms crossed over his chest as his lungs burned as he tried to clear the smoke in exchange for the fresh air. His heart was beating like a tribal drum as he laid on the cool damp grass before sitting up and looking towards Brynn.

"What the hell were you even doing?" He exclaimed as he suddenly realized Brynn had been staring into space before he swooped her up. "Fire all up on you and you were what? Fuckin' day dreaming? Could have got yourself killed!" Sebastian continued, his voice genuinely filled with concern.

As he moved to stand, Sebastian could feel the burns on his body crying out in protest. But yet, he could also see the swelling reducing, he was healing faster than usual.

Thank fuckin' goodness.

"Where the hell is Lehrer?" Sebastian said as he looked around watching the blaze move through the trees as he watch for any signs of the others. "Or did that psychopath off him too?"

“I just...” Brynn sighed, shaking her head. “I guess I'm pretty damn reckless too,” she said with a cynical laugh.

Straightening up as well, Brynn looked back at the fire. It's huge, she realized, watching as an unlucky branch that hung lower than the rest finally gave way, dropping to the ground and stirring up a storm of embers. If Aiden really did that...

“Lehrer,” Brynn repeated after Sebastian had asked his question, her mind whirling again. There was no way the fact that all of the students of Mather Memorial with abilities had been congregated in one impromptu class following the arrival of some new, mysterious teacher was a coincidence. Sure she had no proof that Belle, Winter, or Evander had powers of any sort, but Brynn had seen enough to guess that they did. Why else would students of such different calibers be forcibly grouped into the same class?

“Do you... Do you suppose he has some sort of power as well?” Brynn asked, blindly grasping at straws now. “And even if he doesn't, he has to know, right? About the fact that we all have powers?”

"Fuck, you have powers too?" Sebastian asked, raising an eyebrow in surprise. "I mean, obviously that damned Aiden and I do, but I haven't seen anyone else really do anything fuckin' 'super'." He raised his head, looking through the smoke towards the crescent moon above. "But I suppose if three of us have powers, there's no way the other three don't. As for Lehrer, who knows? Can we even trust the fucker? He could be a g-man here to capture us all and put us in some fuckin' lab." Sebastian added. "Maybe we should make a run for it?"

“'Make a run for it?'” Brynn repeated, brows knitting. “You mean like Rita did?” Brynn bit back from shooting back an "are you insane" and settled for something less critical and more explanatory. “I don't know about you, but I have family here. Roots. And I'm not tearing them out because I'm wary of some new guy in town,” she said.

"I didn't mean leave Crestwood entirely..." Sebastian groaned in frustration at Brynn's melodramatic reaction. "I just meant leave the campsite, get out of here. Out of Jonas' reach..." He continued before his voice went quiet as the other four students emerged from the woods. Standing up, Sebastian's hands opened instinctively, his fingers arching into claws as he locked gazes with the smug Aiden.

"I could fuckin' kill you right now!" He roared as his voice became gravelly. Pain raced up and down his spine and ribcage as the anger enveloped his body. The beast inside threatening to rip off it's Sebastian shaped mask as the anger fueled its need to hunt. Beelining it from Brynn, Sebastian rushed forward faster than anyone could stop him, hands reaching for Aiden's throat.

Faster than anyone except Jonas could stop him that was.

"STAD!"

Jonas' voice echoed over the meadow as Sebastian was suddenly held in place, inches from Aiden's face. All eyes turned to Jonas as he stood on top of the rock denoting the middle of the field, towering over his students while the strange medieval gauntlet glowed in the dark of the night. With the light of the fire at his back, Jonas' face was concealed by the darkness as a mild panic began to set into Sebastian's chest.

"Mhúchadh!" Jonas suddenly yelled as he turned to face the fire. The flames suddenly hurled into the sky before funnelling into a single cone as the vortex of fire was pulled into the gauntlet. With the fire gone, darkness fell over the meadow but the smell of smoke still hung in the air. Turning back to his class, Jonas jumped down from the rock before coolly leaning back against it, his arms crossed as he addressed the small group.

"I heard some of you have questions."

The truth of the situation was rapidly approaching. She was right. If she were the bragging type, she'd go around and scream "I told you so!" But that wasn't viable right now. The fire was approaching dangerous levels and she was unsure if the others were ok. She quickly followed Belle towards their base camp, mildly impressed she was surviving the forest. Never once considering herself an outdoors girl, apart from some mild burning on her skin from the fire blazing around her, she seemed to be handling it well. All things considered...

Finally, the two approached the camp. The sight was something to see. Fire raged, but ice formed too. It seemed Evander used his powers too. Was it for his own protection or was it against Aiden? What was the boy's goal? Before she could stop and ask, Belle spoke up.

"All we needed was for Winter to make everyone remember and Jonas would have explained everything, but you are putting us all at risk with this behaviour! You can't control yourself or your fire,"

All they needed was...her? She remembered Sebastian and Belle, how she seemed to remember their own memories. She remembered the dance, how she was able to remember everything despite the amnesia of the others. That was her power. What else could she do? She'd have to ask Mr. Lehrer, who was the force behind all of this. He had some answers to give. Belle managed to calm Aiden down, as best as he could be calmed, and they all made their way back. She stayed behind Aiden, keeping an eye on the boy in case he got any more wild ideas.

They found Sebastian and Brynn easily enough. Before they could talk, Sebastian screamed and made a beeline for Aiden. Could she blame him really? Now was not the time. "Sebastian wait!" she screamed before she heard the booming voice in a language she heard before. She turned to see Mr. Lehrer, standing on a rock with some weird gauntlet on his hand. It glowed. She had a sense of Deja Vu from the night of the dance. As his voice continued, the fire ceased, the smoke was cleared, but the smell lingered.

Questions.

Yeah, she had a few choice questions for the man. What seemed like an interesting, even cool, teacher, turned into some psychopath who put the group together with the hopes of them trying to kill one another. Was that his goal? Things got dangerously close. Sebastian and Aiden were out for blood, she felt like she was going crazy, Belle dealt with her own demons. She didn't know how the others felt, but she was pissed.

"Yeah, I have some questions. What the fuck? Did you bring us all here for some sort of sick game? For your own amusement? You seem to know more than you've been letting on and that needs to stop here and now. I don't know about the others, but I want answers. The why is explainable, we all seem to have powers. That's why we are in your class. You knew this could happen. Hell, I'm willing to bet you wanted it to happen. We all could have died out there! How could I protect myself against fire when all I can seemingly do is remember!" She was on a roll. She could feel the burning rage behind her eyes. She wasn't so much pissed off at Mr. Lehrer as she was at herself for doubting.

"You made me think I was going insane. The night of the dance, I thought it was in my head. I want answers and I want them now."

6:21 PM, Friday Evening | Orlaith Valley Trail and Park

"It would likely be best if I started at the beginning." Jonas began, "For some reason Crestwood Hollow has recently come to the attention of a powerful individual whom I can only identify as a Draoi." Pausing, Jonas rubbed his shaved head realizing that the students before him had no idea exactly what a 'draoi' was.

"Actually, I need to explain further." He stated. "Each of you are what is called a Hyperhuman, a human born with a mutation that upon puberty grants you abilities beyond those of your peers. What you need to realize is that before 1967, there was no such thing as a Hyperhuman." Jonas looked around at the six students before him. "Long before Hypes, magic was brought into the world. In approximately 200 BCE, a druid, or rather a draoi discovered a way to leave this world. Finding a great oak that had been uprooted doing a storm, the draoi wandering beneath, finding himself in what we have come to call the Tree of Life and Death."

Pausing for a few seconds, Jonas resumed talking. "The draoi eventually escaped, taking within him a seed and from that seed grew a new variety of tree. A white oak." Jonas searched for a reaction among the group. "The very same variety that the 'Hanging Tree' that sits in the middle of Crestwood Hollow is. These white oaks are a tether to the Tree of Life and Death, as such they provide a significant boost in magical energy in their immediate area."

Taking a deep breath, Jonas let out a small sigh before continuing. "Allow me to cut to the chase, in October 1967, in the middle of a coronal mass ejection, a cult of draoi cast a spell seeking to boost their own energy. What they did instead was create you." Jonas said as he looked each member of the class directly in the eyes. "Hyperhumans are not a natural mutation, you were created by magic."

Standing up straight, Jonas took a few steps forward before continuing.

"As a result, each of you contain raw magical energy inside of you, energy that a draoi can harvest and use to enhance their own abilities. Energy that can be manipulated and corrupted turning each of you into unrecognizable monsters. As Winter can attest, a being I recognized as a draoi attacked the dance two weeks ago. He was searching for Elroy Bain, although I have yet to discover why, but what I do know is that he was able to turn Aiden's powers against him, unleashing flames far more powerful than even Aiden himself has yet to produce. Several suspected Hyperhumans around Crestwood Hollow have gone missing and in response I formed this group not only to protect each one of you, but to train you to protect one another and those you care about. Make no mistake, you're all targets and as long as this draoi is out there, none of you are safe." Allowing a minute for everything he had just said to sink in, Jonas waited before answering the rest of Winter's questions.

"As for this weekend, I needed to see how each of you would react under stress. I couldn't have you breaking down, and that fact that most of you didn't try to kill one another is a pleasant surprise. Despite being put into teams, ultimately you came together as a group to confront me and that's exactly what I need you to do the next time the draoi comes for one of you." Without faltering, Jonas continued to speak.

"None of you were ever truly in harm, the flames could only singe your skin, the dinner you all ate contained an ancient elixir used to protect warriors in combat. It would have taken a lot more than a forest fire to hurt any of you. Additionally," He paused, holding up the ancient gauntlet. "I was hiding in plain sight, directing the flames. While I did test some of you," He stated sending a knowing look towards Sebastian, "I directed the fire away from those who weren't able to escape it on their own." Turning, Jonas locked his eyes directly on Winter, before continuing further. "And I'm afraid to inform you Miss Carlyle, the only one who allowed yourself to go 'insane' is you. There are going to be many times in this life where you see something that no one else can ever understand and you're just going to have to grin and bear it."

Friday - Mather Memorial High to Orlaith Valley Trail and Park

Before anything could escalate, Belle had appeared from behind him. She then continued to say that all of this was unneeded. Evander, as usual, kept silent as the two exchanged words. So this was their plan all along? Not to expose every hyperhuman here, but to only get Winter to make them remember everything? So this would also mean that what Winter said earlier, about the ball being what they didn't remember it to be, was true? He nodded at Belle when she told them to follow to search for Sir Jonas. He didn't miss the look Aiden shot him and he only nodded back, silently saying the same as well. While it was respect gained from being honest with what he really is, but not from what he has done. True to what Belle said, what he has done surely was devastating.

Once the group started moving, he followed closely behind them. The search for Jonas Lehrer had been cut short when they stumbled upon Sebastian and Brynn. Oh, they were fine. He sighed in relief. It didn't seem like anyone got killed in the fire, thankfully. Though Sebastian didn't look like he was in good condition. Even so, he made his way to Aiden with killing intent. Winter yelled for him to stop and then a word whose language was unfamiliar to him boomed and Sebastian stopped. He turned his head towards where the voice came from and there was Jonas Lehrer wearing some sort of gauntlet on his hand. The man let out another word in the unfamiliar language and the fire disappeared into the gauntlet.

Winter was the first to react and she let out her feelings. Jonas then launched into a story about how Hyperhumans came to exist. He stayed silent throughout the explanation. It was very hard to even consider believing the story. They were born from magic? Because of some greedy 'draoi' wanting to get an increase in power, they came into existence. And that tree in the middle of Crestwood Hollow was something that wasn't even from this world? And now, they were in danger of being taken by these Draoi for their energy to be harvested. Now, now, isn't that all sorts of wrong? Then, this game was actually a training exercise and they were never really in any danger of dying? He wanted to doubt that but from what Evander had seen Jonas do with that gauntlet, and how he stopped Sebastian with only a word, then maybe... just maybe he was telling the truth.

Evander placed his hand on the back of his neck and clicked his tongue. Well wasn't this annoying? "Then let me ask, who exactly are you? Are you a part of a group that..." He paused, thinking of the right word to say. "...protect Hyperhumans from these Draoi?"

Friday evening, Orlaith Valley Trail & Park

"I could fucking kill you right now."

Aiden smirked at Sebastian's apparent rage. It was amusing to see the infamous troublemaker, whom earlier had been so keen to cause a fuss, now shake with visible fury. He opened his mouth, but had little time to speak before Sebastian surged forward, putting that superspeed of his to good use. Reacting instinctively, Aiden's hands rose to protect his head as the blur that was Sebastian sped towards him from across the meadow. In the seconds between Sebastian's words and action, it had become soberingly clear to Aiden just how much weight his threat had carried. Aiden was preparing himself for the worst; bracing for the inevitable impact of Sebastian's wrath, eyes shut tight.

And yet, it never came. A strange tongue echoed across the clearing, and Aiden slowly opened one eye, lowering his shivering hands in trepidation. There, just centimetres away from his throat, was Sebastian's determined hand, each finger bent into a claw that betrayed the severity of his intent. And yet, Sebastian didn't move at all: he seemed frozen, even his hair locked into a windswept position as he seemed to have been stopped dead in his tracks. Suspended, motionless, by some unseen force.

Jonas Lehrer made himself known, by barking another foreign word and sapping every trace of Aiden's handiwork from the area; only the harsh scent of smoke in each nostril remaining as a testament to the blaze. Aiden didn't speak as Jonas explained his role in the evening's activity, and he remained similarly silent as Winter rose to challenge him. Not the best move, he thought to himself, after seeing the feats Jonas had just performed. He eyed the inanimate form of Sebastian cautiously, before deciding it best to walk over to join Brynn away from his incapacitated attacker.

It was demanded that Mr. Lehrer explain to the class exactly what was going on, and to give the teacher due credit, he did indeed explain. He explained the origin of Hyperhumans, stating their birth from the greed of some sort of wizard many years ago. He explained the role of Crestwood Hollow, and the implications this had on them as modern Hyperhumans. Someone out there was hunting them; someone powerful. And, he explained, in putting together the class, Jonas' goal was to teach each student not only how to protect themselves; but to protect each other, and the ones they love. It was a lot to take in... But every word of it made sense, and it was a relief to finally have a satisfying amount of light shed onto their shared predicament.

He felt similarly relieved as Jonas revealed he'd had the situation under control all evening. It would be hard for his fellow students to hold a grudge, now that they knew Jonas had apparently been pulling the strings. Even Aiden recognised that his actions had been beyond reckless, but he stood by his belief that he had taken the most efficient route into getting them to this point. Without him taking the initiative, they could all well be sat back at the camp, none-the-wiser to what lay in store for them back in Crestwood Hollow.

And yet, he could still feel the disproving looks of his peers; a weary look of caution or an angry glare seemingly passed in between each of Jonas' revelations. It would seem that, as Mr. Lehrer stood there lecturing them on the importance of allies, Aiden found himself surrounded by new enemies. He sighed quietly to himself, slowly moving away from the group to sit on a nearby boulder. Here, he could listen to anything Jonas had to say, but not be quite so enveloped in the tension that whirled around the group.

Gazing out into the night, and doing his best to look callous and disinterested, Aiden wanted nothing more than to return home to Crestwood Hollow. Whoever - or whatever - this 'Draoi' was, it looked like he would have to face it alone. But, he realised, glancing back at his classmates discreetly, that was the way it always had been.

Friday Evening | Orlaith Valley Trail and Park

That Jonas Lehrer had powers shocked Brynn even though she’d played with a few scenarios where the strange teacher possessed special abilities of his own. Mind whirling, Brynn watched in amazement as her teacher froze Sebastian with one word and extinguished Aiden’s fire with another.

Is he some sort of wizard? she wondered, mind simultaneously finding and rejecting that idea. Preposterous! was her next thought, but Winter spoke up before Brynn could continue bashing herself for something she believed more crazy than what was transpiring before her.

Winter’s rambling accusations may have been much messier than her normal, composed wordings, but they gave Brynn a lot of information to work with. For one, it seemed that Winter had developed some sort of personal grudge against Lehrer. It wasn’t like Brynn could blame the blonde since she could see herself being pretty happy if some very special Social Conscience teacher disappeared off the face of the planet with a “poof,” but Winter’s grudge seemed a bit too deep to have just developed during Lehrer’s revelation. The key piece was the girl’s statement about the night of the dance, and since Mather Memorial High only had one dance so far in the school year, Brynn doubted that Winter could be referring to anything else.

My powers existed before the dance, so I didn’t get them on the night of the dance. That said, Brynn thought, brows knitting as she thought back to the heavy blow to the student council, what happened? A key puzzle piece was missing, and Brynn didn’t like it one bit.

All this was before Jonas Lehrer’s rather short, fast, and — on the whole — completely unsatisfactory explanation. Brynn had a sudden urge to throw her hands up and demand where she could find a library’s worth of materials on the whole matter because she had way too many questions and much too little patience to deal with her “Social Conscience Teacher.” The whole scenario was like some Lord of the Rings junkie’s wet dream, and Brynn despised it.

Jonas’ revelations about the fire both surprised and frightened Brynn; she didn’t remember anything of the dance, and now she was being told that some ancient, magic-sucking druid had come after one of her classmates? What else am I not aware of then? she wondered, icy dread sinking into her gut. What else have I conveniently forgotten, or even been forced to forget? Is that a thing? Wiping someone’s memory?

Registering some faint movement among her classmates, Brynn noticed Aiden making for the fringes of the group, his face a tired mask of resignation. If it had been a week ago — or even two hours ago — Brynn would have considered calling out to him. Now, she figured he could use some guilt in his life. Reckless and thoughtless. Absolutely no foresight and care for others’ lives, she thought in clipped phrases, her lack of control over the new revelations bringing out her sharper and more cynical side. Lehrer might have made it sound pretty but Aiden could have refrained from torching the forest in the first place.

Turning a blind eye to the boy, Brynn refocused on Lehrer as Evander voiced one of the questions that had been running through her head. That’s one way to put it, she thought, letting out a faint snort at the notion of an organization formed to protect Hyperhumans. Can this situation get any more like some Marvel-DC fandom gone wrong?

“Exactly. What’s in all of this for you?” Brynn asked, eyes steely as she met Jonas’ gaze. “Surely you have some better reason than simply being a part of some humanitarian organization? Because frankly, I have a hard time believing that you’re just some do-gooder, so what do you get out of all of this?”

This was a lot of information, and Belle felt like she'd been lead astray by Jonas, coaxed into hidden trials and secret challenges, tests of character and skill that she was at an innate disadvantage for. She felt somehow used, manipulated - why bother with several weeks of fake curriculum? - but she remembered the dance, and how utterly outmatched they had been - Jonas himself only just fighting off their attacker. If this man desired power, and could drain it from their very bodies...there was very little they could do to defend themselves alone. But together, trained and co-ordinated and tactical, they may stand a chance.

“Exactly. What’s in all of this for you? Surely you have some better reason than simply being a part of some humanitarian organization? Because frankly, I have a hard time believing that you’re just some do-gooder, so what do you get out of all of this?”

"Protection. It's protection, isn't it? You can't force him to leave the city by yourself, especially when he's backed up by those beasts - so you gather us, train us, make us stronger, more in control of our abilities, and then we help defend you as a byproduct of defending ourselves." Belle focused on Jonas, a quizzical and accusing eyebrow arching up at him. "But that can't just be it, that's too simple. There wouldn't be such a...charade, otherwise. It's got to be bigger than that - this... 'Draoi' has a practical army. We're caught up in something bigger than all of us, aren't we? Wrong time, wrong place? What exactly do you plan onpreparing us for, Mr Lehrer?"

"Then let me ask, who exactly are you? Are you a part of a group that..." Evander paused,
his eyes looking down as he tried to find the right words. "...protect Hyperhumans from these Draoi?" Before Jonas could rightfully answer, Brynn's voice echoed through the meadow as the small girl made herself known.

“Exactly. What’s in all of this for you?” The girl asked as her eyes made contact with Jonas' own. “Surely you have some better reason than simply being a part of some humanitarian organization? Because frankly, I have a hard time believing that you’re just some do-gooder, so what do you get out of all of this?”

"Protection. It's protection, isn't it? You can't force him to leave the city by yourself, especially when he's backed up by those beasts - so you gather us, train us, make us stronger, more in control of our abilities, and then we help defend you as a byproduct of defending ourselves." Belle was the next to speak, issuing her own conclusion as the bright girl made use of the facts laid out before her. She paused for a second, before looking directly at Jonas. "But that can't just be it, that's too simple. There wouldn't be such a...charade, otherwise. It's got to be bigger than that - this... 'Draoi' has a practical army. We're caught up in something bigger than all of us, aren't we? Wrong time, wrong place? What exactly do you plan on preparing us for, Mr Lehrer?"

"Inquisitive lot aren't you all?" Jonas stated as he looked at the group. "I had forgotten how cynical the world had become in the wake of the technological revolution. The ease of access you all have to information is something many of my colleagues would have been greatly envious of back in my youth. It would have saved many more lives as well." Take a couple steps to pace, Jonas cleared his throat. "I'm afraid Mr. Dario, the group I work for has no interest in protecting Hyperhumans. In fact many are sure you're all just puppets of the Draoi and would no sooner bat an eye lash than they would behead you." A small smirk crossed Jonas' usually stoic face. "However it that that kind of medieval thinking that has led to nearly every Venari being wiped out."

"So I came to Crestwood Hollow to try something new." Jonas stated. "I wanted to make a new breed of Venari, use your natural strength and our training to create a better Venari." Stopping, Jonas looked back at the group. "Although, I suppose I should explain what exactly the Venari are." He cleared his throat for a second before launching into another history lesson.

"While most of our order's history was lost during the Dark Ages, what we do now is that we are protectors of our realm. For as long as history can recall, the Venari have been charged with protecting Earth from any magical threats that have trespassed into our realm. The Draoi have been the longest running thorn in our side and we have allied ourselves with the Templars, the Spanish Inquisition and even the Salem Witch Hunters in numerous efforts to hunt down and rid the world of the Draoi. However our efforts don't stop there, we hunt down creatures that history has regarded as legendary or mythical. We are true masters of cryptozoology and trust me, there's a lot more out there than just werewolves."

Jonas paused, a small smirk dancing in the corners of his mouth. "And yes, for those of you who are still at a loss of memory, werewolves were at the dance and Miss Carlyle isn't completely insane." Rubbing his temples, Jonas turned to the group as he made his final plead.

"So yes, I do have my own agenda, I want to re-invent the order that trained me. But I also want to ensure the protection of each and everyone of you. If at the end of the day when the Draoi is done, when that day comes if you want nothing to do with me or the Venari, I will understand. However I do ask that until that point you allow me to train and defend you, only together can we defeat this Draoi and keep your homes and families safe."

6:39 PM, Friday Evening | Orlaith Valley Trail and Park

As Jonas finally finished speaking, Sebastian found himself freed as he stumbled forward. While his anger was still festering beneath his skin it had somewhat ebbed during his 'time out'.

"I'm going to need some time to think about this." Sebastian muttered. "I rather liked my life before you came along anyways." He added before turning and heading back to the campsite. It was true, life had gotten weird since he had picked up his school schedule and saw the 'Social Conscience' class staring back at him. Sebastian had always had a gut feeling something was wrong with a class that hand picked its students and yet here they were now with a man who could potentially kill them and get away with it. But if his words were true, wasn't the alternative of having their souls sucked out worse?

"Rock, meet hard place." Sebastian muttered as he stumbled into his tent and rolled onto his back, staring up into the pitched 'ceiling'.
And while events of the dance had come to light, Sebastian still didn't have his memories back. Could the werewolves have something to do with his sudden mood swings and cravings he had been experiencing. Anger issues ran in his blood line but his father's issues were always fueled by alcohol, not their shared powers. Something was inside Sebastian's chest trying to claw it's way out, and it was always worse at night. Perhaps Winter would be able to shed some light on Sebastian's lost memories, it seemed she was the only one to remember and Belle somehow started to remember after spending time with Winter. But then again, Sebastian had spent the last couple weeks with Winter and nothing had happened.

Oh and to make matters worse, he was now thinking about Brynn. Cute girl, sassy and sharp. Yep, he was definitely thinking about Brynn when he was supposed to be dating Winter.

Fuck.

The rest of the weekend seemed to drag by as the students were equally weary of each other as they were of Jonas. Aiden in particular was no where to be seen except during meal times and Saturday evening for bed. Sebastian tried to spend time with Winter, but no matter how hard he tried, he just didn't enjoy it the same as he previously had. His newfound infatuation for Brynn seemed to paint everything Winter did as less interesting than Brynn. Guilt twinged in his stomach as Sebastian tried to rough it out, normal guys had friends they could talk to, assholes would just cheat but Sebastian wasn't his father and he wasn't normal so he was alone on this issue.

After lunch on Sunday, the group packed up their campsite. Never before had Sebastian been so happy his powers were outed as he zipped back and forth across the campsite, rapidly packing up the group's gear at blinding speeds before they all piled into the van. As much as Sebastian would have loved to run home, it was best for appearances that he rode with the others. Though how they'd explain Rita's disappearance was a whole other matter.

The van ride was quiet as Jonas drove the group back to the school. Sitting with a window open, Sebastian hung his head slightly out the window as he allowed the wind to blow through his hair while he stared up at the school. The revelations of the weekend were still sinking in and he had to admit with the way both his home and school life had gone, running away seemed pretty tempting. But Jonas' offer was also enticing, there had to be definite benefits to becoming a Venturi or whatever Jonas had called himself. Feeling the brakes come on as the van pulled into the school parking lot, Sebastian looked around as flashes of red and blue suddenly caught his attention. Emergency services were at the school as an ambulance sat with its back open while the police rounded the corner escorting Elroy between them.

As Jonas opened the door to exit the van, Elroy suddenly raised a hand, a single accusatory finger extended towards Jonas as the police rushed forward. The next few minutes were a blur even for Sebastian as Jonas was taken into custody and Sebastian himself was hauled off by a paramedic and looked over for signs of abuse, sexual trauma and whatever else they could think of to pin on Jonas.

Hours of questioning only added to the exhausting weekend and without contact with his classmates to get their story straight, he had no idea who spilled what. Finally released, Sebastian wandered the streets, eventually finding himself at Rita's old apartment. It was empty of course, even George didn't appear to be living here anymore. Crashing on the abandoned mattress, Sebastian closed his eyes and allowed sleep to take him.

E P I S O D E III:
T H E C H O I C E

7:11 AM, Monday, September 26th | Rita's Old Apartment

Monday morning had come far too fast for Sebastian Scott, as the sunlight shone through the window. With no blinds or curtains to restrict it's overly bright beams, Sebastian was woken up far too soon for his own likely. Walking into the run down washroom,
he ran the cold water before splashing it on his face and slicking his tousled hair back.

"At some point, I'm going to need to find a comb." Sebastian muttered into the dusty mirror as he made his way outside. His clothes reeked of campfire, sweat and whatever else had been in those woods. In fact, he noted, a shower would probably do a world of good for his current odor situation. Leaving Rita's apartment, Sebastian headed towards Caspian's Diner to start his morning off with at least one thing good before heading to the school. He could probably skip today and no one would think anything lesser of him, that being a challenge most days for his classmates but today being the exception. With Jonas in custody, even the guidance office would let the Social Conscience Students off the hook if they cried out that Jojo had touched their 'Danger Zones'. Hell, half the class believed Jonas and Winter had been shagging out back for the last couple weeks, Sebastian included up until this weekend. But curiosity had definitely taken the front seat in Sebastian's mind and he had to admit, he wanted to see how magical Jonas was. Could he make a kidnapping charge disappear? Perhaps he pulled a 'Jedi Mind Trick' on the police department.

Dipping inside a laundry mat, Sebastian quickly eyeballed the various machines before spotting several clothes that fit his body and style.
Swapping them out for his current clothes, Sebastian found himself outback fully changed, except for one article of clothing.

"Welp," He muttered before dropping a pair of boxers to the ground. "I best hope these jeans don't chafe." Resuming his venture to Caspian's, Sebastian swiped a twenty out of a pocket before entering the restaurant, his arrival signaled by the ringing of a bell.

"Sebastian! Favourite customer." Dimitri's voice yelled out as Sebastian entered. "Can I get your new regular."

"Oh yes please." Sebastian eagerly answered as his stomach growled in reply.

The school's locker rooms didn't have the best showers but at least they were free. Smelling like stolen body spray on the other hand,
it was a win lose at best. At least he smelled better than he had earlier that day but still now he smelled like a jock so, not the best outcome.

The rest of the morning went by fairly quickly, Sebastian noted that the majority of his classmates from Social Conscience had actually come to school today, which definitely was a surprise. Then again if he didn't take the opportunity to skip, why would they? Eventually the time for Social Conscience drew close and as the bell rang to signal the time to change classes, Sebastian found fear seeping into his chest. What if Jonas had been lying and was responsible for everything? This Draoi had really only been seen by Winter right? He didn't have his memories, Jonas could easily be a Hyperhuman criminal of some kind. Making his way up the stairs, Sebastian nodded to each of his classmates as they slowly grouped together outside the door to their classroom. Each of them staring at the door in uncertainty before Sebastian reached for the door knob.

"Here goes nothing."

As Jonas explained the entire situation, Winter found herself getting both angrier and sadder. She was pissed that Jonas let her continue thinking she may have been going mad without so much as a hint she wasn't, but also felt sympathy that he was dealing with this issue with the Draoi and Venturi with no back-up. Now here they were, being told the real reason for everything. It was a lot to take in. She noticed the others asking lots of questions, which was good. She knew more truth than any of them and she still couldn't make heads or tails of it.

More specifically, she noticed Aiden slink off to sit on top of a boulder without so much as a word. The weary glances of her classmates made her think he was feeling extremely guilty for what transpired. His intentions may have been good, but he went about it the wrong way. While Jonas talked, Winter followed and sat next to him on top of the rock. Not saying much, apart from her open body language. If he wanted to talk, she would let him. Until that time, she would at least make him feel like he wasn't alone in this. Not anymore.

The weekend came and went quickly. It was an awkward event. The other students didn't really know what to make of the new information. She herself grew more concerned. If what Lehrer said it true, then there were people out there wanting to hunt them down like they did with Elroy and that could mean danger for them and their loved ones. Would they target her family? Would they target her first? After all, out of the lot of them, she was the only one who remembered everything. Surely these beings could see that? It made her more concerned about staying home alone. She would ask Sebastian if she could spend the night at his place, but that was a whole other issue.

Winter wasn't stupid by any means. She could tell he was distant. She could see the side glances aimed at Brynn. If he wasn't interested in her anymore, all he had to do was say so. She liked him and the two had fun together. She wouldn't be against dating him officially, but if he didn't want to anymore the least he could do was tell her so. She also felt a twinge of jealousy at Brynn. She was pretty and nice and a great person to be around, but she wasn't so different. Why was he into her? Was it because the two shared something on this trip like how Sebastian and her shared something during the dance? Winter allowed him some time. He seemed like the sort that needed to think things through, but she wasn't about to be "that girl". She made that obvious.

The trip back was about the same as the trip here, though she could feel the tension. She still didn't have a place to stay. Perhaps she should risk going back home.

As they pulled into the school, the red and blue flashing lights alerted her. The ambulance was surrounded by onlookers and one particular body made her pause and gasp.

Elroy.

By all acounts, apart from being inside the ambulance, he seemed fine. The look in his eye said anything but. He pointed one finger in their direction and Mr. Lehrer was grabbed by the police. Not only that, but Sebastian was also taken away. Before she could protest, she, too, was grabbed and pulled toward one of the ambulances. "Miss Carlyle, we just have some questions for you," was all they said before she saw the inside of the ambulance.

Back At School

She was questioned mercilessly. She appeared to be the victim, based on what they were asking, but they had that look in her eyes. They asked questions about Mr. Lehrer. Did he do anything to them during their trip? Did she see him with Elroy before? Did he seem violent? She told the truth as best she could. Mr. Lehrer finally opened up and told them the truth, but he wasn't dangerous. In fact, if she knew she wouldn't be tied up in a straight jacket, she would have spilled the beans about the dance, but she knew they wouldn't believe her. Even with her...abilities, she couldn't make them remember the dance unless they had been there specifically. By all accounts, a fire was started. Elroy, however, was alive. But there was something there. Something different. Elroy looked angry, especially at Jonas. Was he mad because he was taken despite Jonas' best efforts? Or was there something more sinister.

She debated going back to school. The school would have understood if she decided to skip. What would they do for Social Conscience then? Would the others show up? Winter made herself up as best she could. She was losing sleep worrying about an oncoming attack. Would she be the next Elroy? As much easier as it would be to forget it all and continue life as normal as she could, life wouldn't be the same anymore. She was different. She was a Hyperhuman and she was being targeted. She needed the class. She needed her classmates. And she needed Mr. Lehrer.

School went on. She could feel the stares. She could hear the whispers. Her social standing was suffering and she found herself not caring. Didn't these idiots know anything apart from Twitter favs and instagram likes? There was danger coming and they could only talk about her and Lehrer banging. She let it slide.

She was happy to see that her classmates returned. They stared at each other, a nod of the head here and there. Understanding. As Social Conscience came, she found herself staring at the door. The others came up too, but no one dared to enter. Silence. What would they do? What could they do?

Finally, Sebastian broke the tension and opened the door. She was happy to see him. She wanted to talk to him. Despite all of this, she was still a teenage girl. If he wanted to stop seeing her, then he should be a man and tell her. But at the same time, she needed him. She didn't want to be alone at home anymore, and she didn't know the others as well.

She tried to get to know Aiden better, at least. Perhaps he would help? Or Belle? Was she still angry at her? She didn't really want to ask Brynn. She wasn't mad at the girl, it wasn't her fault Sebastian was interested in her, but it was still awkward.

She entered the classroom and sat down at a desk, purposefully away from Brynn and Sebastian. She waited a bit before speaking, "So, what do we do now?"

Friday - Orlaith Valley Trail and Park

Evander sighed and rubbed the back of his head. So this man is part of a group who'd rather behead them than actually help them? Wow, isn't that reassuring. However, Sir Jonas continued to speak and he listened. He started to talk about something called a 'Venari' and how he wanted to create a new breed of them... out of the students he had right now. And from what this man was saying, these Venari were something akin to monster hunters. And they also hunt other mythical creature. Evander was quite curious on what other creatures Sir Jonas and his group had met.

It would also seem that the werewolves at the dance were actually real. The things Winter spouted earlier were real. He wasn't sure whether to be relieved that the girl wasn't crazy, or worried that he, along with the others, were attacked by werewolves. That must have been quite an event. To think that he had actually seen a werewolf in person before and he cannot remember it, it was quite saddening. He at least wanted to learn what exactly those werewolves looked like.

"Guess we'll find out more about it later anyway." He said. Seeing the others disperse, he decided to leave as well. Seeing that it was already late at night, he decided to turn in. Looking at Winter and Aiden and then giving them a silent nod as a 'good night', he headed inside his tent and then lied down. Well, whatever happens, happens.

Evander, much like the others, had no idea how to act upon the information given to them. So, he decided to continue as if nothing had happened. Unfortunately, the others didn't exactly have the same idea. He decided that interaction wouldn't hurt. There were a few problems though. He couldn't talk much with Winter since she had been hanging out Sebastian and it would be rather awkward to approach her to talk, at least for him. Sebastian for the same reason. He wanted to talk with Aiden, both because he usually kept to himself which he can relate to and that he can talk to him about their powers as they were polar opposites. However, Aiden rarely popped up for the remainder of the weekend and the chance slipped by all too quickly. He did attempt multiple times to talk with Brynn and Belle as they were pretty approachable.

It gave him time to think about what Jonas had said. Joining the ranks of the Venari might prove to be interesting. They seemed to have been quite a group. While he won't admit it out loud, mythical creatures were something that was an interest of his. These creatures were like them - they were unlike anything of this world; the only difference was that Hyperhumans were real and that these creatures' existence haven't been proved yet. It's what made them interesting in the first place. Now, he knew that they were actually real and he met someone who actually deals with these creatures. However, there were downsides. He wasn't worried about his family. While they didn't like using their powers, he was sure they would use it for defense. The danger involved in it would be great, though, and training wouldn't be easy.

Would it be worth it?

Sunday came and they left after lunch. Sebastian's speed proved to be useful as the camp was packed in less time than needed. With that over, they all climbed onto the van with him taking the seat on the side of the door. The ride was silent, much like before. Evander leaned his head on the window, watching the scenery pass by. There wasn't much to think about in the ride. So he decided to take a light sleep.

He felt that the sleep was too short. He opened his eyes when the van stopped on the school's parking lot. His eyes caught the sight of red and blue, confusing him ever so slightly. Not sure of what to do, he simply opened the door and then exited the van. When his mind finally cleared, he could finally understand what was happening. However, it was all too late. He could see police officers heading towards them. Further back, he saw Elroy pointing at Sir Jonas.

Well, being questioned by the police wasn't exactly the thing he wanted to come back to. When one of the police officers grabbed his wrist, he was tempted to punch the guy in the face and run. But he managed to resist that urge and just simply follow them. They asked him about Sir Jonas and what he had been doing, what they had been doing, if he was acting weird and some other questions. He answered most of them honestly, simply leaving out the one about him being a Venari and them being Hyperhumans and such. Sir Jonas was capable of eradicating them all, he could guess, but he didn't seem like a bad guy. After hours of repeated questioning, he grew very impatient and his answers became short and laced with hidden anger. Seeing that the male didn't seem very willing anymore, they decided that it would be best if he would be released.

Monday - Mather Memorial High

Surprisingly, he found himself at school and attending his classes normally. He had the amazing choice of skipping school with the excuse that has something to do with Sir Jonas. Though a lot had happened during the weekend, he just doesn't think any of that warrants an absent from school. He was also pleasantly surprised that he saw the other members of the Social Conscience class at school. Though they didn't openly approach each other and talk, they only gave each other nods of acknowledgement. Well, it would seem that they did need each other. They needed that sense of companionship - they needed someone they knew they could trust to understand them.

Evander knew he could trust Emily. Not with this new information. She was a normal person after all, and the last thing he wanted was for her to get caught up in this whole business. She was the one to approach first, immediately launching into a story of what had happened. Apparently, Elroy had blamed Sir Jonas about something and told other things to the police resulting in him being detained and him and his fellow classmates questioned. She blabbered on about the rumors that were being spread all across the school, but he honestly held no interest in them.

None except for one particular rumor that involved his classmate. It was, by no means, a new rumor. He knew it had existed before as he heard snippets of this rumor being passed by one person to the next, trying to find something good to gossip about. It was about Winter and Sir Jonas. Ha, it was hilarious actually. They'd just make up just about anything if it was to degrade a person of interest. Emily didn't believe it, trusting Winter at least more than those other people. No way she would do that right?

With Emily gone for her other classes, the memory of the rumor took a back seat in his mind and he continued on. There were some students who, surprisingly, came up to him to ask if Sir Jonas really did something to them. He gave them a stare and then shook his head, answering honestly that the teacher didn't do anything wrong, and then left. He wasn't sure if they'd take his word for it or if they would somehow twist what he said into something else. To be honest, he couldn't even care any less now.

Hours ticked by quickly and the time for the Social Conscience class had arrived. He walked towards the classroom, not even sure if any of the others would go. Why was he going there? He can't answer that question. Maybe it was by instinct or maybe he was just curious if the others would show up... either way, he got there and was once more pleased to see that the others had the same bright idea to attend Social Conscience. The problem was, no one moved. All were not sure what they should do and so everyone was frozen in that state - staring at the door that separated them from the classroom within.

It was a good thing that Sebastian made a move. The male had opened the door to the classroom and Winter quickly walked inside and took a seat. Evander followed and then took a seat that he had previously occupied before. It was a favorite spot of his in any classroom. Anything with a wall beside it. He looked at Winter as she posed the question of what they should do now. He stayed silent, waiting for the others to answer the question.

The holding cell was damp, dark and dingy. The police department in Crestwood Hollow apparently didn't see the need to keep their facilities up to date, Jonas noted as he looked around at the aged brickwork. The cell walls were only slightly better than the ones he had been in during the first world war. Standing up, he paced the ground slowly as he tried to think of the best way to get out of this predicament, there was the long route which was waiting to go to court against Elroy. Nothing would stand then, but he had to find a way to get out this sooner, preferably legally.

Then again, there was always the illegal methods, Jonas noted as a man entered the holding cells under police escort.

"Lehrer, you have a vistor." The first of the two officers remarked as some sort of poor introduction to the man he had escorted in. "Ten minutes, that's all you get."

The two officers parted, revealing Lehrer's guest who stood in the doorway of the cell. He was tall and slender, with his sharp features turned upwards into a coy grin at each guard as they left the room. He was wrapped elegantly in an outrageously large fur coat, almost to the floor in length and coloured with brilliant orange flecked with white. He turned to look at Lehrer, flashing his teeth in a mischievous smile.

"Hello, old friend," he cooed. "Fancy seeing you here."

"I hope for your sake Kit, you have nothing to do with this." Jonas said as he turned his back to Kit, choosing instead to look out the cell window. "I should have assumed when I saw your fluffy tail running around the woods, trouble couldn't be far behind."

Kit put his hand to his chest, feigning shock and offence and pouting at the imprisoned man's accusation. He moved further into the cell, each carefully placed footstep seeming like the calculated result of a year spent planning.

"Oh, come now, Jonas!" he exclaimed, though his face was once again painted with a certain knowing smugness. "That's no way to greet a friend. Especially one who's been looking out for you!" he mock-protested. His accent was oddly unplaceable, some transatlantic mix. "And to think, I had been so excited about our little reunion. I came as soon as I heard the news." he said, running a digit along the brickwork and inspecting the layer of dust that had gathered on his fingertip. "After all, what are friends for?" he laughed, joining Jonas by the window and clasping his hands behind his back. For a few seconds, the pair stared out over the grim waterfront backing the precinct in uneasy quietness. "Lovely view."

"You do realize they have a live video feed in here? Or have you forgotten about the advent of technology again?" Jonas chided Kit as he joined the elder man inside the cell. "Now if you're done beating around the bush, why don't we cut to the chase. What do you want?"

Kit pouted. "Why, I'm here to get you out of this mess," he snapped back, curtly. "What makes you think I need anything in return? Frankly, Jonas, I'm offended." he said, a playful smirk returning to his lips. He gave Jonas barely a second to interject before continuing. "Oh, very well, if you insist. I suppose there is something you could do for me. You know, to show your gratitude."

As he spoke, Kit unfasted one of the buttons on his shirt, pulling at the gap to reveal the remains of a tattoo. It was in poor condition; the ink was faint, and the design had patches missing where it seemed to have rubbed off the skin over time. "I could use a touch up, old sport. Of course, only if it isn't too much trouble," he jibed, flashing a cheeky grin. "I expect you've been awfully busy lately, what with babysitting your new protégés and such."

"You're as predictable as you've always been. I knew you were after something." Jonas bemoaned, whilst Kit could only chuckle in response. "I will repair your runes... Once I am out of here, of course." He stated flately before turning directly towards Kit, a small smirk flaring up in the corners of Jonas' mouth before he spoke again.

"Though as the mundanes' legal system takes longer than the Council to reach a decision, there is something I need you to do in the meantime..."

A I D E N M c K E N N A

Monday 26th September, Mather Memorial High School

Aiden didn't like police officers. He had known it after his incident at the mall, when they had swarmed every corner of town looking for the supposed villain. He had known it in the hospital, where he had been interrogated and accused of a crime he did not commit. He had known it as the school bus had pulled into the parking lot of Mather Memorial High; feeling his stomach lurch at the sight of their red and blue flashing lights, and being relieved only momentarily as he realised it was not him they were after. And he had known it when, with little warning, he was whisked off to be questioned once more.

The police, it would seem, had quite the bee in their bonnet about Mr. Lehrer. Aiden was not entirely sure that he trusted the professor's motives; he had difficulty believing that anyone did things for the greater good anymore. The world was a cruel and selfish place. One thing he was sure of, however, was that Jonas Lehrer was the best chance any of them had at uncovering the truth; not to mention a valuable asset in their plan to ... Well, to survive the persecution of this mysterious Draoi.

And so, he told the truth, but not the whole truth. He wasn't dumb, after all. Whatever had happened with Lehrer and Elroy was none of Aiden's business; he knew it was in his best interests for his teacher to not be incarcerated, and it was true that, whilst putting the class in a dangerous predicament, none of the classmates had been harmed by Lehrer on the trip.

He thought about this as he made his way up the stairs, towards the Social Conscience classroom. Whilst he'd done his best to keep his distance from his classmates, Aiden figured that this was something he had to attend. There were lots of things that the class needed to address with Lehrer, and Aiden fully intended on being there to hear what he had to say - that was, if he even showed up. For all they knew, he could still be in jail.

He gingerly pushed the door open, finding that most of his classmates had already arrived and taken a seat. But there was no sign of Jonas Lehrer.

Feeling awkward, he kept his head down and refused to meet the eyes of his peers. He may have been imagining it, but Aiden was certain he could feel each one of them silently projecting their hate. Sure, some of them had tried to make an effort back at the camp... Winter, especially, but Aiden didn't trust it. What did she have to gain? The most popular girl in school did not need the support of Aiden McKenna. He sat himself in his usual corner, and scribbled anxiously in his sketchbook as he waited for any sign of the professor.

Fifteen minutes had passed, and by now all the students had arrived and were growing restless. There was an overpowering sense of uncertainty that hung in the room, as the students collectively wondered what had become of Mr. Lehrer. And then, without warning, the door handle turned, and a figure entered the room.

But this man was not Mr. Lehrer.

Aiden looked at him, puzzled. The man wore a huge fur coat, orange in colour - he presumed it was fox, due to the flicks of white that accentuated the collar. He moved to Mr Lehrer's desk, without looking at the class or saying a word, sitting in their teacher's seat and sinking back into the cushioned chair. Nonchalantly, he kicked his feet up onto the desk, and crossed them one over the other.

"Ever so sorry," he said, addressing the class, though his tone and the smug grin that seemed fixed onto his face implied he was anything but sorry. "I was running a little late. But now that I'm here, I suppose introductions are in order." he said, springing back to his feet with surprising agility. "Of course, I'm already rather familiar with all of you," he smiled, scanning around the room and taking in all the faces. "But I expect you know very little about me. I'm Kit Renard, and I'm an alcoholic." he joked, before looking at Sebastian and feigning concern. "Oh, terribly sorry, Sebastian," he purred. "Sore subject, right?"

"On a serious note," he continued, paying little attention to any response Sebastian offered, "I'm going to be running this class for the foreseeable future. It would seem that your usual teacher still can't keep himself out of trouble." he mused, "Though neither of us were ever any good at that."

"I suppose you have questions. I'm willing to answer the more interesting ones." he said, looking at Belle, who already had her hand raised firmly in the air. "Put your hand down, Abelle. I said interesting questions only."

Aiden sank into his seat. Whoever this Kit Renard was, he was intimidatingly pleasant in his viciousness. It was bizarre, as though Mr. Renard's very aura was magnetically endearing. Even when he was cutting down their classmates, he had a certain charm about him that seemed to be effecting the whole room, and not just Aiden. He was the epitome of a lovable rogue; a mischievous twinkle in his eye that accompanied each mean jibe and made him seem more playful than nasty. And how did he know their names?

But, those eyes... They were so familiar. Where had Aiden seen them before? In fact, he was certain that this was not his first time meeting Mr. Renard. To his surprise, the substitute teacher seemed to catch Aiden staring, and for a moment the two shared eye contact. But then Mr. Renard smiled a cunning smile, and winked, before turning back to the class and awaiting their questions.

Aiden swallowed. Something about Kit Renard made him very uncomfortable.

Jonas' explanation, when it finally came out, was so... classically tragic. A tattered remnant of former glory, still clinging on to the rags of his past, simply because he had no other direction. A righteous, moral heart, unguided and adrift, now anchored on a singular purpose with hand-chosen charges. Belle felt...cared for, in a peculiar, holistic way. The man in front of her was but a small part of a far greater network that had devoted itself to hidden guardianship, and now this network had splintered into her life and the lives of her classmates. 'Hyperhumans' seemed an extravagent term but her life, now, was grander than it had been before, and it had begun to show even before this 'fieldtrip' - she felt part of a stronger whole among her peers in Social Conscience, led by a noble mentor. And now, they were being explicitly told that they were to become a new chapter of these 'Venari'. Belle smiled.

*

A few days later, Belle's lips still curved as they made their way back to the van. How all so...exciting. To be a chosen guardian of this city and those that lived within...gathering herself as the class returned to the city proper, she reached out, somehow feeling the low thrum of the million insect lives she touched and guided. Absentmindedly, she scratched at her shoulder.

The smile didn't last as Jonas was taken away, the accusations levied against him falling hard upon Belle and her classmates; the police's question fell harder, the psychological poking and prodding and soft, half-hearted comforts falling on numb ears. Belle shrugged off the officer's efforts to console her about trauma that never happened - she knew about trauma already - and instead wandered home alone to lay on her bed and spiral around her mind about a grander fate being torn so cruelly away from her.

Outside her bedroom window, the hive she had been cultivating for the last week or so buzzed harshly, wasps vacating their nest to sit on the window pane, grouping up into pulsating blobs of black and yellow, a few insects batting against the glass in their efforts to get to her. Belle opened her eyes and stood up, grabbing her phone from her pocket and snapping a photo of the polka-dot window before standing with her forehead on the glass. On the other side, wasps congregated around where her skin met the window, and she felt their hum for a few seconds, comforted by her power over them. Straightening up, she issued a new command - and slowly, wasps drifted up to the top of their hive, carefully, painstakingly biting and tearing. 20 seconds later, the whole hive fell the three storeys down to the ground, shattering completely upon impact with the patio below Belle's room. Its inhabitants poured out, furious and frightened, and Belle relinquished all control, watching them as they fled wildly and spastically away from the scene of their catastrophe. Their queen, immobile and defenseless, lay on her back in the wreckage. Belle shut her blinds, and went to sleep.

The school loomed over Belle like an enemy she could not or would not overcome, a self-inflicted, compulsive opposition. Never had Mather Memorial stood so ominously, had its hallways filled with naught but hollow air and the ghosts of accusations. On every other day of Belle's academic career, she had arrived with an anxious fervour to learn, to educate, to study and excel in those studies. But today...she merely drifted through her syllabi, half-there, her mind consumed by thoughts of Social Conscience; Jonas had not been released from county, but the class had not been cancelled. But this personal forum of Jonas' own making, with its own hidden purpose...what possible substitute could accomplish what Jonas had set out to achieve?

The hours dripped by, every tick of every clock hand in the school knocking on Belle's skull from day's start to its inevitable, agonizing end. Belle stood among her classmates, petrified by the unanswered question, posed by the classroom's door, that hung on every molecule of air, dangling above them like vicious hooks adorned with beautiful lures. Belle scratched her shoulder again.

It was, of course, the ever-vivacious Sebastian who broke the stupour, cutting through the silence with a strong, focused voice as he pushed the door open and walked through the threshold, a task so simple that had still felt near insurmountable mere seconds ago. They sat, and waited. What happens now?

And then something extraordinary and terrifying happened.
Kit Renard happened.

His introduction speech was as entrancing as it was repulsive, simultaneously compelling and deeply unnerving. He insulted and charmed in equal measure, making it clear that he wished to impress while also being transparent in his apathy towards the class - an apathy that felt more dangerous than contempt. Kit's bizzare, facetious veneer pinned him to magic the way Jonas' silent, alluring mystery did, but the contrast between the two couldn't have been more stark; Jonas was comforting, protecting - Kit's every movement was painted with indirect menace. Belle couldn't help but wonder if Kit was here on Jonas' word - she wondered if Kit was the reason Jonas wasn't here in the first place. She brushed his cool dismissal of her away, and instead stood up - shoulders locked, fists clenched, brow furrowed heavily, Belle in a defensive, assertive stance.

"What do you know." She asked, the question posing a hundred different queries, each one as desperately important as the last.
