Legacies of the Exodus

The future is not everything it could of been. From the memory of what was once in the shadow of Earth's rings to the fields and factories of the Leningrad System, mankind has been marked - and so in turn has made its own. The Orion Arm became a sanctuary and in time, home. Thus did its worlds became the new seat of human culture, innovation, ideology, faith and greed.

War may never change, but politics, politics is as fickle as the men and women who pursue it as their path to power, and everyone must pick a side in action or word. This is the future, and it is not everything it should have been, such is the legacy of our exodus.

If anything confuses you or you wish to know more, please PM me or use the thread and I'll be happy to help you. While this is a mix of realism and space opera, there will be no real gamification metrics and I will be extending a measure of common sense to individuals to keep it orderly and not have fleets of thousands of ships, don't make me regret it ;).

Are we able to reserve countries for use or is it a first-come, first-serve basis?

If you express an interest there's no reason why I wouldn't hold something for a few days at least.

Oh man... That's a huge amount of data expected for the apps. I'll try to emulate but don't expect an app overnight.

The Apps? I don't expect much more than a paragraph or two, but it helps to know if people are paying attention to things.

My own sheet has had plenty of time to percolate and shouldn't be what people aim for instantly.

On the subject of bioaugments I still am under the impression there would be factions less ethical than others in regards to that field even if it's deeply regulated by the UN. Does the UN have organizations who will go as far as to stuxnet researchers in less ethical factions if they put research into the field? How do they enforce that regulation? What if (Hypothetically of course- if any faction is going to have a total ban on genetic modification it's the space USSR) the USSR decides to make that gorrila army stalin wanted? How would the UN prevent that?

Also this video.

I am not sure if there would be a unilateral fear of bioaugmentation, there likely would still be schools of thought who believe humans must adapt the tech of the Juhseughi as much as possible or risk being crushed in the future "When they really try to wipe us out".

The Republic of Taurus shall not let sanctions from the communists get in the way of the invisible hand!

If there's a market there's a way.

"Nationalism should be dead. It's the future, there's aliens out there and we still hold to these silly nationalistic ideas that divide us based on what nation-state we came from centuries ago in a fucking galaxy of things that want to kill us."
-Notable New Knossian Philosopher Darian Spade

Is 9 billion people a reasonable amount? I am not sure what populations are standard, what I did was make a primate planet out of New Knossos giving a population comparable to 21st century Earth while adding a additional few billion to account for all the other settlements throughout the Hyades open cluster.

Bioaugmentation is probably quite expensive, added there's no real nanotechnology of any worth to help with it so were potentially talking a Deus Ex type scenario where you're basically on drugs for life to not reject them, theres cultural bias and yes, there's about a dozen organisations both official and unofficial on both sides that do things for and against and its a mess.

The UN is also militarized, don't forget that.

It's not something I'm going to keep rehashing or i'll be rambling and ranting about it, it is what it is, whether it makes sense or not is kind of secondary to whether its giving me a headache or not. What you do once things are in motion are another matter and come with their own consequences.

Theres not bans on "genetic modification" - hell some are necessary for medical reasons and other things are necessary to live in certain places, its just not a run away prospect where people have stupidly ridiculous supermen yet are 90% technology on top. That's not what this is about.

Also y'all can stop with your silly anti-communist fear mongering, the USSR is more socialist than communist at this point in time :p.

And if anything is a problem I'll let you know.

A small but effective military force that still relies on other nations for the heavy lifting though.

See why illegal bioaug trade can be profittable? You can always be certain your clients will keep coming back and they will pay out big time.

Yeah but we're not talking low-grade cheap half-cut drugs here now are we if you want people to actually live, we're talking high quality specialized production on a large scale and that means were talking big old production trails, or theft, theft from big old meanie corporations with meaningful political connections or god forbid a state owned soviet co-operative.

Doesn't mean it doesn't happen, so make scope for it, but it isn't as discrete and below the board as you know, pretty much everything else - hell I'd expect the legit companies that make it would probably be just as inclined to, er, "headhunt" from such operations while simultaneously stopping them eating into profit margins.

I do believe though that I already said basic augmentation was "common" enough, particularly for specific tasks like industry that required it and most likely with some uptake among the rich and for other specialized roles like intelligence. Its just not widespread. If people need more than that then make it happen IC.

So chances are most stuff that will be sold likely will continue being good ol synthetic drugs with any dubious bioaugs being what they sell to the wealthy clients.

The Republic of Taurus Likely does have infiltration from other countries and UN activity in regards to the ~space cartels~ that infest basically everywhere not the system New Knossos is in (My faction is centered around a Primate Planet). The smugglers are always finding clever ways to outwit the check points. Sometimes you have to basically dismantle half the ship to find where they hid the illicit cargo.

@TaerynHow much freedom do we have with tech?
Can we also invent weird space phenomena? It seems many players taking this as "real countries enlarged to interstellar levels" so I wondered if I should make the Carpathian Anomaly which prevents entering my space anywhere but at a few points.

Techwise, Anything up to what you see in BSG/Halo type universes, that is, the new BSG - bar self-aware AI, that can come in RP if you want. If you feel you're going past that then find a good reason or ask about it.

As for that. You shouldn't feel the need - the purpose of the FTL in place was to create strategic and tactical considerations already. I mean it essentially provides for as such in that the only meaningful way to travel between most stars is at particular points and along particular lines, and where these node lines are and where they go to is largely at player discretion.

I mean lets use an example - my map making skills are nil and I won't make you suffer paint.

Lets say you wanted to get from Altair to Gamma Serpentis, you'd need to go to 70 Ophiuchi, down to a system off screen, back up to HR5553, then onto Gamma Serpentis. At least if you're aiming to do it in any reasonable amount of time. I hope that example of the FTL system works in helping people.

If you still feel you need a crazy nebula or whatever for some reason go ahead and throw something down to discuss, but i wont otherwise be policing local spatial geographic features unless they're outright silly.
