In Character

Werewolves were always kept on a leash, at least since the middle ages, when the last great alpha was extinguished. Left shattered by the destruction of their royalty and courts, Werewolves became the bellboys, the doormen, the legbreakers of other supernatural beings that were more sophisticated at finance, commerce and politics. There were, of course, rumors of werewolf bloodlines producing an alpha, who could make new werewolves with a bite, but the rumors also were that other supernaturals were adept at finding and killing these individuals when they arose before they could surround themselves with others.

1968, in the worst of the Tet Offensive, a young werewolf undergoes a first change that is unexpected. He is indeed a werewolf, but far from the rites of his people, including an indoctrination into servitude. He is from a bloodline that serves others, but he was raised with the secret stories of the great werewolf lords, Alphas. He was told, in family gatherings, the glorious history of these failed uprisings, heroic and melancholic.

He and his friends are being overrun by the Viet Cong in an outpost near Cambodia. The lines are stretched, air support is minimal. They are going to die, though the werewolf knows that his odds are good. Knowing the tales, he attempts something desperate, to give his friends a chance to survive with him; the bite. The bite worked. He and his buddies are miraculous heroes, their deeds (massively fictionalized) feted in Stars and Stripes. What counts is that the Alpha has his pack, already blooded in battle.

The new alpha came back to the world with his army buddies, one of whom had a brother that ran with a biker gang. It was a good place to lay low, to marshal the forces of a new war against the other supernaturals, the ones that turned everyone into their slaves. They stayed on the move, nomads, to avoid the notice until they were ready. They added to their numbers so that it wouldn't be so simple as neutralizing the Alpha to keep the help from becoming restive. This time, the supernatural bigshots out there, worrying over stock prices and manipulating their politicians while their tame wolves did the dirty work for a pittance, would have a real fight on their hands.

This is the saga of the Wild Hunt, the Werewolf biker gang, and its fight against the cabals and conspiracies of the world arrayed against them.

Out of Character Info:

Werewolf bikers in the 1960's/1970's. It's glorious.

I am going to break the convention and make the gang multi-ethnic and multi-gendered to allow people to create a great character that they feel. The Alpha, of course, is a werewolf of great power and influence, but also will be hunted by anyone supernatural who comes across them out of fear -- even the ones that doing have were's doing servant work for them aren't going to relish the destabilization of their cushy lives. Without an alpha, Werewolves are few in number and less potent, docile and content to serve other supernatural factions and live off the bones they gnaw, figuratively (sometimes literally.)

With an alpha in play, the game changes. Some weres are so far gone in their servitude that they will fight against them, but others are potential recruits to the cause. The alpha's leadership is primal and magnetic, he is a natural leader among his kind. Of course, the alpha is also in danger. Not all werewolves are apt to follow, particularly if they are kept addicted to drugs or are otherwise being controlled by a rival being. Of course, by the same token, wolves in an alpha's pack are not easy to subvert by mind domination and charm magic; they are bonded in spirit and that much more dangerous. The presence of an alpha on the field empowers them beyond their normal capabilities, which is precisely why the fangers and the others took precautions to put down any previous alphas.

Also, I am thinking there is an ebb and flow to the werewolves and their powers. At the full moon, they are at their most violent and dangerous, whereas the opposite applies at a new moon, it's a time for them to sleep it all off. By the same token, they can rouse themselves to fight. I am definitely looking for them to be able to go to that wolf-man form that the movies like to show off, and maybe see if they do a normal wolf form as well.

So you were looking for someone to play the Alpha? I thought that bit might been NPC'd due to the power and nature. I am willing to do it if the others aren't, but i was more angling towards Sergeant at arms or enforcer though.

Well, the alpha is powerful, but in a subtle sort of way. They buff the other weres, make them stronger and deadlier. They give them purpose and the benefits of a true pack leader. Werewolves without an alpha are less powerful and more controllable, but with an alpha, they're players in the supernatural world, rather than just legbreakers. Also, Alphas can create new werewolves rather than just breed them. I want to devise limitations to this ability, but it is still a gamechanger.

So the alpha comes with hefty liabilities -- other supernaturals that use werewolves as the help aren't going to appreciate the competition.

I'll talk to the other two that I bought in and see what their feelings are and what concepts they are currently working with.

One of the two here, will be looking at concepts and ideas. I'm guessing this isn't going to be a sheet-heavy thing?

I could take on the role of Alpha if needed.
I was looking at the story line. The members of the MC are all veterans of some military event during the Vietnam War. Is it necessary for all the characters to have served in the same unit? If so, here are a few suggestions:

1/28/68 Tet Offensive (several units to choose from) All of the others are extensions of the Tet Offensive. There are several other engagements than just the two listed below.
1/30/68 - 3/3/68 Battle of Huế (1st Bn, 1st Marines/ 2nd Bn, 5th Marines/ 3rd Marine Tank Battalion)
1/31/68 - 2/3/68 Battle for Quang Tri (1st BDE, 1st US Cav Division & 2nd BDE, 101st Airborne Div)

Pardon me, I am a military history buff. Although, both of these engagements, Hue and Quang Tri are American/ARVN victories, there may have been small isolated pockets of US Army soldiers, US Marines or ARVN soldiers who were vastly outnumbered and suffered a tremendous defeat. We can easily portray one of these smaller isolated units that may not have suffered a tremendous defeat but in some mysterious way outlasted superior numbers to survive with only minor wounds. This is the stuff Medal of Honor citations are written for.

One obvious thing comes up, are we assuming post joining the MC that the Alpha became the President of the MC due to the earlier-mentioned Alpha-ness, or are they not necessarily one and the same?

Not all the members of the MC are veterans. But there is a pack coming back with the Alpha and they are definitely veterans -- the first werewolves that were 'made' rather than born.

Good to know!

With that said, I wrote up a possible History of those who were veterans. This gives a one over the world perspective of the unit these werewolves were part of.

The Defense of Firebase Cochise

In an attempt to get us all on the same sheet of music regarding how the group was formed; regarding that yet to be disclosed military event in 1968, I've written a piece of historical fiction. I started by researching an account of the Battle of Quang Tri fought between People's Army of Vietnam units (PAVN) versus Army of the Republic of Vietnam (ARVN) units supported by the US 1st Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division and US 2nd Brigade, 101st Airborne Division from 31 Jan 1968 to 6 February 1968.

I focus on the 1st Squadron, 8th US Cavalry (1-8 CAV), 1st BDE, 1st Cavalry Division. This unit was located in the mountains west of Quang Tri City caught in the fog. They did nothing during the battle. The other Cavalry squadrons of 1st Brigade were air assaulted into Landing Zones (LZs) south of Quang Tri and relieved the ARVN units being assaulted in the city.

For our purposes, A Troop, 1-8 Cav was assigned to Firebase COCHISE, overlooking highway AH16 and the village of Thôn Khe Xêng. The firebase name is a reference to the 8th Cavalry's participation in the Indian Wars less than a hundred years earlier. Our characters were all members of A Troop, 1st squadron, 8th Cavalry (Mustangs), 1st Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division.

On the morning of 31 January 1968, at approximately 0420 hours, a Battalion of PAVN infantry supported by a company of combat engineers assaulted Firebase COCHISE. The infantry engagement raged for four days ending in the afternoon of 3 February with fewer than two dozen American Cavalrymen holding the now corpse strewn ground.

I don't want to get into any more detail than that. This would have been a firebase at the end of a ridgeline, that afforded the unit elevation with which to defend itself and clear fields of fire to fire upon attacking enemy infantry and clear line of sight of the village and highway to the west. We know that a werewolf infected others in the unit in order to help them to survive the ordeal. These Cavalry Troopers from 1st Cav came home and formed "The Wild Hunt". The stories coming out of Firebase Cochise are seemingly unbelieveable. You can write a personal story of your character's account at Firebase Cochise.

Basically, the Wild Hunt may have existed before, but the alpha took it over and made members into werewolves. Since the veteran community is strongly represented in MC's, it was a home for the werewolves. The connection in might be that one of the other Vietnam vets has an older brother that is a member and helped introduce the pack to the club.

Fair enough. I know many of the original MC that existed in America were WWII veterans returning from Europe or the Pacific Theater of Operations.

Yeah, so I figure the Wild Hunt has that sort of lineage. But maybe it's fallen on hard times or is just a group that there is a connection with, initially.

If you are wondering how things might have gone at firebase Cochise during the Tet Offensive, the basic gist is this; the Vietnamese launched a surprise attack on the major cities of the Republic of Vietnam (RVN) in 1968 and it was essentially a strategic surprise that turned the public perception of the war around for the American news viewer. The Vietnamese took on US forces in toe to toe combat...and were actually beaten back into guerrilla activity after that, but the damage was done in the political sphere.

The point of that is that this was the most intense period of combat in the Vietnam war until 1975 or so when the North Vietnamese invaded and ended it, and that was after the US pulled out. So outposts were under siege -- in fact Khe Sanh was under siege -- and cities were actually overrun (Hue.)

Gunther suggested the Air Cav and I agree, because the Air Cav was very active in Vietnam as well as being iconic. I don't get the feeling that people are overly worried about the details of the military operations, but it's good to sort of know that for a lot of American forces, the Tet Offensive caught them off guard and was a period of very intense combat. That's important to the backstory, since we have an alpha werewolf whose unit is being overrun who bites his buddies in desperation. They miraculously survive a human wave of attackers out somewhere in the hinterlands of godknowswhere where their outpost is cut off when artillery and air support aren't available.

Of course, when it's all done, there's a lot of confusion as to what happened, a couple of guys that survived the fight at Firebase Cochise and a bunch of Vietnamese telling stories about man-eating tigers.

On the other hand, there are characters that might have joined the Wild Hunt after the alpha and buddies got back or characters that were in the Wild Hunt when the Alpha joined and bit members to give them the extra edge that a werewolf has. If anyone needs more info on the Vietnam war or the 1960's in general (because if this happened in 1968, we're in 1969, which works -- it's the Summer of Love and Altamont, when things start to get darker) just feel free to reach out.

I was going to set up a discord, but I am way too busy with work to keep track of a chat right now, so I'd prefer to keep the OOC to the posts, if possible.

Good deal. I think I'm going to handle the alpha role, mostly because I have a strong sense of where to take that and also how to balance out the relationship of werewolves to other factions.

No problem. You know, I don't care if I am the alpha. I can write it either way. Would you like me to change Victor's history? Or maybe your character could have been at Ia Drag with Vic in 1965?

I actually wrote it in that Vic caught Rusty going werewolf in Firebase Cochise. That could explain why he decided to give the offer to the other members of the unit as a potential way to survive.

yea, it makes more sense for your character to be the Alpha. You are the one driving the train. I will rewrite my character's history a bit so that he doesn't become infected with the werewolf bug until February 1968 rather than November 1965.
