A Song of Men and Arms

I sing of arms and a man, who first from the boundaries of Troy, exiled by fate, came to distant shores...

(-Virgil)

High walled Illium has fallen, the invading Daanans have sacked the city. The fire that was set in the city have turned to smoldering coals. Priam has been slayed upon the alter, Helen returned to Menelaus, and Aeneas has left the shores of the city, drawn on by the Gods to another destiny. Agamemnon now struggles to maintain his host. The allies of the Dardinian's are readying themselves to retreat home. And above them all, the ever eternal Gods watch upon Mt. Olympos, urging along the fates of these mortals.

And so the war numbed souls on all sides begin to think a single, all consuming thought: Home. The question is where, and if they'll survive the journey.

If you haven't gathered yet, A Song of Men and Arms is the lovechild of Trojan Cycle, and all the stories and Epics that have emerged from this mythological watershed. I want to create a roleplay that, while it doesn't copy one of the existent stories, instead reflects the original tales and draws from them for inspiration.

The roleplay will be focused on a group of people returning from the Trojan war to their homeland, wherever it may be. I'm willing to be centered on Greeks returning home with their spoils (The Odyssey), or on a group of Trojans trying to make a new home somewhere (The Aeneid.) Throughout, the players will cross paths and negotiate the many perils facing Epic heros.

Characters will reflect the nature of these Epics- since Greek heroes were always paragons of human potential- Odysseus the most cunning, Hektor the bravest, Helen the most beautiful, Achilles the strongest. While not necessary, it's highly likely that your character will be a blood relation to one of the Gods. Those wanting to play as seers and witches, a la Cassandra and Medea, are more than welcome to do so, and are encouraged.

Character Sheet:

Name: Preferably era appropriate, and try to avoid naming them after major characters from other Epics. (I don't want to see another Achilles or a Medea, mkay?)

Epithets: Swift-Footed Achilles, Pale Armed Helen, Clever Odysseus, etc. Any nicknames your character has from being cool.

Age: Keep it reasonable for a group of survivors returning from a Bronze Age siege. Kids grew up really fast then.

Gender:

Appearance: What do they look like? Pictures are fine, but a text description is needed as well.

Personality: What sort of person are they? Elaborate here.

Bio: Their life story. Pretty Self Explanatory.

Skills: What can your character do? Odysseus could wrestle and be sneaky, but he could also build boats. Is it medicine, athletics, swordplay, poetry, skill with the lyre? List them all. But keep them reasonable, these are the mundane things your character can do.

Greatest Strength
: Why will your character be sung about generations after they're dead? Is it their ability to lead men into the heated fray of battle? Their favored connection with the Gods, granting them prophecy? Their ability to perform witchcraft and other arts, performing all sorts of incredible magic? Are they incapable of drowning? Whatever it is, list it here.

Greatest Flaw: No true hero is perfect. Achilles was vain, Odysseus relied so much on cunning he didn't know when to stop lying, Oedipus was cursed by the Gods into a horrific destiny that he fulfilled no matter what he tried to do. Jason was heartless. Whats the thing that will ruin your character? It can be an internal fault, or an external curse. Whatever it is, it's brutal and worthy of the Epics.

Let's give this a go. It's dramatic and violent, and perhaps a bit off the wagon for what you're looking for, but it's also just the first thing I thought of. Let me know if I should keep thinking or if it's solid to go.

I thought I'd try something more heroic, if that's Okay? It may have to change, depending on whether we're Trojan or Greek, but...

Also, what did people want to be, Trojan or Greek? I'd rather be Trojan, personally, but whatever.

P.S. Stheno is awesome

Okay, @Howler, Stheno is Approved

@CelticSoldier I'm hesitant to give this a full approval, just because I have some concerns with how Ambrus seems a little one-note for me. The greatest flaw is supposed to be something that could, if unchecked, lead your character to be slumped over, crying with their eyes torn out as they regret everything they've done. Elaborate a bit more on his flaws, make him more human.
And I think you may have misunderstood what the Skills section is supposed to be. I already know in his greatest Strengths section that he is as slick as snake oil, I want to see what *other* skills he has. Can he use that sword, or is it just for show? How good is he at sailing? Fill some of that out a bit more.
Make those few changes, and you've got a full approval.

@Sypherkhode822 Okay, edited! Sorry about not getting it first, wasn't sure whether it was the 'you can't touch me because I'm basically a god' style of Greek hero, who can be one dimensional, or whether we were fleshing it out. Still might not be perfect, this is a style of character building I've not tried, but please give pointers!

@CelticSoldier Yes! Perfect! You're approved.

@Gunther Kyros is approved, appreciate the ancestry with Apollo, good to see that you know your stuff.

Well, so far we have a terrifying monster beast pleasant young woman, a gregarious ginger Conan, and a depressive archer who lays hands on people.

Looking good everyone!

Not completely like Conan, he has a shield, its just...you know...a really good counter weight....for his sword. Okay fine, maybe a little bit like Conan. (grumble)

Shall we move our characters into the tab?

Haven't you ever met someone who is high on life one minute and a serious Debbie Downer the next? I was actually thinking of the character "Babyface" George Nelson in "Oh Brother Where Art Thou?" when I wrote that.

@Roosan Please! Welcome! We're still open!

So we're now Trojans. Awesome!

Ideally, I'd like to have five or six players. I'm thinking about making my own character, who would sorta prod everyone along, but would always stay on the boat, letting the players do the fun things.

'Cross paths', Does this mean we're all doing our own thing, then meet sometimes? Or that we meet up and go on epic adventures together? Sorry to ask now, but I just noticed it, I don't mind either way.

@CelticSoldier I was thinking we all struck out on the ship upon the Aegean together. Maybe he has something else in store for us?

@Sypherkhode822 I hope you don't mind if I introduce a boat-load of NPCs into the story. In a story like this one, I enjoy bringing in a bunch of Red Shirts to get whacked when appropriate.

Red shirts seemed to be all the rage back then, I mean in the Odyssey, EVERYONE died. Literally. It was just Odysseus, and he didn't even have his own boat, he had to convince the Phoenicians to give him a boat (and loads of free stuff). Hence the Odyssey is told from first person.

@Gunther 'boat-load'...did you do that on purpose?

Oops, that's a typo. I was playing with something like 'Cross paths with gods' but cut it because it ran too long. No, I either want to start with the city on fire, or kick it off on the ocean, with a flashback soon after. And yeah, boatload of red tunics. I might have multiple boats follow the group, only to have them wrecked one way or another.

Hey gang, so it looks like @Roosan has gone out the wayside, so I'll just write up a Trojan noble, then maybe one or two notable Red Tunics.
