"Something's coming. Something that's beyond any one of us. Maybe beyond all of us."
Since the beginning of time, there have been witches. Women and men who traffic with strange and dark powers, wielding abilities beyond what most people can even dream of. They tend to congregate in covens for fellowship, learning, and defense. One of the most famous, or infamous, covens is the Carlsford Coven, named for its hometown in North Carolina.
Since the beginning of time, there have been hunters. Men and women who have sworn to defeat witches, and protect innocent and ignorant people from their threat. Now, a group of hunters have descended upon Carlsford, seeking to wipe out the local coven.
But things are stirring in the darkness beyond the world, things that no coven or group of hunters can stand up to alone. Can the two sides put aside their differences, or are millennia of differences and hatred too much to overcome?
A typical Southern town of 30,000 that isn't sleepy as much as comatose most of the year. The one exception is the first full week of August, when the annual "Blues, Brews, and 'Cues" festival happens and tourists descend in their hordes. Popular places in town include Main Street, filled with your average small-town shops and restaurants, Reynolds Park, the main outdoor spot in town, and Carlsford High School, where the predatory nature of the cliques outshines even the legions of Hell.
I'm very flexible, though; if you need a romantic field or a dark creepy cave to explore, make it up!
Back in the 1800s, Carlsford was a major stop on the Underground Railroad. Many houses and barns in town had secret chambers that were used to hide runaway slaves. When the coven moved into town in the early 1900s, it was a fairly simple matter to use magic to conceal, connect, and enlarge these spaces. The coven now has a library, training spaces, and dormitories for emergencies, all in a space that is far bigger on the inside than the outside. There's even a genius loci linked into this underground home, capable of spontaneously rearranging the architecture if needed.
The last month or so has been rough for the coven, with two major problems. First off, some of the newer witches have been sloppy in keeping their spellcasting secret when out in town. Nothing too flashy, but rumors of pencils flying into hands or punches in fistfights sliding by their target for no reason have gotten to the point where hunters are starting to come poking around. Secondly, and perhaps more serious, is the leadership crisis brewing.
Covens traditionally have a single leader, referred to as the First Brother or First Sister. Each coven keeps its own method of nominating a new First Sibling when the old one passes, whether a vote, a test of magical skill, or some other method. Many covens keep a Council for day to day issues, but in time of crisis, such as threat of discovery, the First Sibling has sole authority in order to provide focus.
Last week, First Sister Mary Anne Redding died of natural causes. Normally, the coven elects a new first sibling by secret ballot, but on her deathbed, Mary Anne took an unheard-of step in the Carlsford Coven: outright naming a successor, her 20-year-old niece Elizabeth. Needless to say, many other witches were angry at various things; not being consulted, feeling passed over, and defiance of tradition. And they've started taking out their frustrations on the new boss. It hasn't gotten to the point of outright violence, but you can cut the tension with a knife.
There are almost as many different styles of magic as there are witches. Some witches prefer to use drawn designs and rituals, while others use potions, incantations, artifacts, or sacrifices. (Long story short, I am willing to allow virtually any system of magic, and even the same witch being capable to use multiple styles. Just bring it up with me first if it's something really weird.)
Silver- burns witches on contact.
Crosses-burn witches on contact.
Gold- Resists magic, and excellent at dispelling enchantments.
Olive juice-Deadly poisonous to witches.
Salt- Dispels magic.
In this RP, you can play either a witch or hunter. (Or both, there's no character limits.) Characters do not necessarily have to be affiliated with one side or the other at the start; you could, for example, have a witch who's just found out that they have powers and eventually come across the coven. Note also that not all witches are necessarily evil, nor are hunters always good. Dark and light is a better way to think of it.

I am GM. I'll try to be patient, but if I have to step in, that is the end of it.
Personality - He's quite a dark individual who doesn't really care much for "normal" people. He despises hunters in all their forms and will do anything to protect his own Coven from them. He's not really afraid of many things, simply because in his line of work you see a lot of crazy shit that would scar a normal person. Thankfully, he isn't a normal person and has learned to cope with his magical abilities. There's a fun side to Covix, but seldom does it come out anymore and especially as of late.
Bio - Carlsford is very much Covix's home, as he grew up in the town. His parents were also Witches, so his roots are deep within the Carlsford Coven and he cares very deeply for it. When he was a teenager, his parents were out on a trip to meet with another coven in Columbia, South Carolina. Later, when they failed to return, they found out the entire thing was a setup by hunters and his parents had been murdered. He was absolutely devastated for a time, but came to accept what happened as apart of his reality. It just happens, and thankfully, hunters never found their Coven, so he at least knew his parents had died with that secret. He would vow to never betray the Coven and fight for it as long as he lived.
He grew into his powers, learning everything he could and excelling in pyromancy as his major weapon. Covix would later become one of the enforces for the Coven and ensuring that nothing would be out of place, humans would "forget" if they saw anything and maintaining order in the town. He loved it all but never suspected that a member of their own Coven would betray them. He knew Marie little but she when she killed his friend, a fellow witch, he was deeply shaken. He felt it as an even bigger blow then when his parents died and swore that if he ever found her, she would die by his hand.
In present time, Covix was sad to see First Sister Mary Anne Redding die. It came suddenly and without warning but what surprised him most was how she completely disrespected the way of things, and proclaimed her niece as the new First Sister. Elizabeth was young, that was for sure and many other witches who were far older and more experienced were perfect candidates for the new position. Covix felt that he wouldn't be ready for such a task for at least a long while. He doesn't really know how to feel about it, and won't jump to any conclusions until he sees how Elizabeth guides the Coven with the new threat of the Hunters on the way. For one thing, he is ready.
Magical Specialty - Pyromancy is what he is very good at. He has also dabbled in darker arts...
Appearance: Marie Lacour is 5'5" (1.65 m), very thin to an almost unhealthy degree, with Black hair, green eyes, and lightly tanned skin from her father's side. Marie tends to wear her hair back up in a ponytail to keep it out of her face, and wears rather non-descript black clothing most of the time in her current hiding state. She's rather dirty looking, having spent the last year of her life hiding in the dense woods of North Carolina, tracking witches and evading their capture.
Personality: Marie used to be happy and friendly a long time ago, and on occasion, this old personality shows through. However, the vast majority of Marie's expression comes in the form of paranoia and anxiety. Quick to react violently, especially when confronted by those that are not familiar to her, and very distrustful of all those who she would consider familiar. For the most part, Marie is asocial by choice, preferring to stay hidden away in the dense forests outside of Carlsford, hidden away from the witches she scorned with her betrayal and departure. Marie feels deep feelings of failure and persecution, partial contributed by her slowly worsening psychosis.
Bio: The story of Marie Lacour begins with the meeting of Aaron Lacour, a Cajun student of business, and Sabine Duret, a student from Rouen in France. From there first meeting in Louisiana, it was decided that the two would marry and that Aaron would relocate to France with Sabine. And with the birth of their first child, Marie Acadie Lacour; began the downfall of not only their own lives, but the beginning of a tragic fate to unspin with the girl.
Marie and her two siblings, Maxine and Jules spent the majority of their childhood lives in the city of Rouen. For the most part, life was good for the family. However, Aaron and Sabine always took a notice to the odd behavior of Marie. The growing problems of the child, particularly Marie, began to take their toll on the stability of the family, and slowly, animosity between Aaron and Sabine reached a peak when Marie was 13 years of age, when a severe mental breakdown led to her attempting suicide, culminating in a long period of mental health examination, concluding with her being declared afflicted with Paranoid Schizophrenia. Only a year later, Marie's parents divorced, and Aaron decided to relocate to the United States once again, taking Marie and Jules with him; Maxine staying in France with Sabine. Marie began to blame herself for the separation of her family, a feeling coupled with her father's distance towards her, and her sister's outright hatred of her shortly after the separation. Aaron, unable to find work in his native Louisiana, moved his family to Charlotte, and later was moved to Carlsford by his employer. The move was hard on the already mentally unstable Marie, who had never lived in such a small and foreign place before. Unlike her 8 year old brother, the 14 year old Marie never was able to fully fit into the new society she was living in, and remained something of an outcast her entire life, finding little support in her resenting father, her family in France, with only her brother showing any kind of concern for her. From this point on, Marie took on the philosophy to just go with life, and try to be happy, do not fight against others, and try to be optimistic, lest the worst happen in life.
At age 17 Marie began feeling strange urges to paint and inscribe symbols. It was brushed off by her and her family as schizophrenia-related, though for her, these urges felt different from anything she had felt before. A young girl caught sight of Marie's drawings and symbols, and immediately was intrigued, she began to talk to her more, and soon the two girls, the other named Melanie, but known as Mel by Marie, became close friends. Mel introduced Marie to magic and the art of witches, intrigued by Marie's strange symbols, which she recognized as a form of runemal enchanting native to Normandy, Marie's native region of France. Marie thought little of it and initially did not believe Mel. By 18, Marie began to develop romantic feelings for her friend and the two became a couple, though Aaron, disapproving of this, expelled Marie from his home. Hurt, Mel informed Marie that she could keep her somewhere, and thus, Marie was introduced into the Carlsford Coven.
While initially seen as untrustworthy and a potential traitor for her schizophrenia, Marie was later accepted among the coven as a skilled enchanter, using her natural skill in Runic Binding to attribute power to items. However, Marie had always had problems with the morality of the coven. This culminated in her eventual killing of a fellow witch in defense of a common human. Marie declared a traitor and was sentenced to die, and as such, she fled, hoping to take refuge in France, but soon taking on a change of heart while hiding away in the dark forests of North Carolina, deciding that instead of hiding and being hated like she always was, to fight back. As of now, Marie is an independent hunter, killing any witch that she comes in contact with, tracking other down, and efficient at it with her very intimate knowledge of the coven. She is, however, distrustful of other hunters, given her nature as essentially a turncoat witch.
Weapon Specialty: Marie fights with a Crossbow. Her Bows are usually enchanted, and her custom arrow heads are forged from silver alloys and the heads are dipped in olive oils and juices.
"Just calm down and enjoy what's around you before it all starts slipping away before you even noticing it. Not knowing what you had before its too late, that's what life is like..."
Daniel Ó Briain
Born on June 22nd. He looks like he's in his mid-30s but is much much older, however, nobody needs to know that.
Male
Daniel doesn't have a problem over whoever gender is his the partner that he is trying to pursue as long he likes them. Not minding if whatever he gets into is either a fling or short-term relationship, usually bouncing with different people for the added spice in life and exchanging moments between them. Having little worry who he is involved with as long both of them are having fun and enjoying themselves when they are together for how long. On occasion, though, he does have long-term relationships with someone usually special who he feels attached to. For all purposes, he is considered Pansexual.
Daniel's bulky form has been something he has worked on which has on occasion been the subject to a few people glancing at twice. Perhaps its from his tall stature of six feet and three inches where he is usually the tallest in the room and weighing around 189 lbs without else. Born in Ireland, his previously lighter skin has tanned from being in the sun all the time which has absorbed its color along with his chocolate colored hair and matching light brown eyes. With his hair cut short on the sides for a fade and then styled, he seems to have a good handle of his own appearance. Having some tame facial hair on his prominent jawline that prickles against the skin if you feel it or rub against it, trimmed to remove any messiness with it. Along with his lips angled to always seem like he has a small smirk whenever you look at him.
Daniel's prominent trait is him as an extrovert with an obvious outgoing personality that anyone can see just by looking at him. With the look on his face, knowing he is confident about himself and what he is wearing which conveys much without being said. Having this air of self-confidence about himself that seems unwavering, it also shows when he talks with that cool headed and calm demeanor that wouldn't be embarrassed to ask or reveal anything. As a person with his confidence, he wouldn't be afraid to stand as a rebel against the norm or at the same time take the position as a leader for something that he believes in.
He is a person who would be considered being fun to be around, as he is always looking for something to do whether it be with a group or by himself. Seemingly having an appetite for conversation, he is clearly a people's person who loves to talk to people and get to know them. Combined with the fact that he is a flirtatious person, he can make a person chuckle at how smooth he can pull something off without a second thought. It makes his personality great for taking along to go to any kind of party as he's a polite guest who isn't afraid to join in the fun once it starts rolling.
Daniel as a guy with many friends is inclined to be generally trusting and doesn't mind lending a hand to those who needs it and freely offers help to those who won't ask. He has a rather positive view on life but with a good dose of realism that keeps him in check, seeing many of the faces that appear in humanity and himself. All he can do is always try to do his best to live his own life the fullest with the hope that nothing will throw it too out of whack.
Born in Ireland a long time ago in the 1700s where the beginnings began for Daniel who was a boy. Born to parents both witches who raised him well and proper as expected of the time and raised him to be like them. Teaching them the magic of their practice, talented enchanters who forged weapons with runes that enchanted their properties. A relatively mundane form of magic compared to the explosion of the elements and the dead being raised from the graves. Learning the art of enchantment and was eventually taught the ancient practice of using runes from his parents.
Growing up, his abilities only increased as he learned more and more before finally leaving his home and began to explore the world as an entrepreneur to broaden his horizons. Trading secrets with other witches that he met and came across countless covens both good, bad and evil. Meeting his fair share of witch hunters as well, fighting off a good majority of them and on rare occasion befriending one or two that he'd meet. Making many memories as he traveled all over Europe to finally America. Experiencing a fair amount of animosity for the supernatural and simply race, he quickly grew hard skin from the poisonous culture back then.
Eventually, he got his hands around a few blueprints for several mystical runes that could be forged into powerful spells. Having to go back to Europe to snatch the pieces of magic which would greatly benefit him. He had to do several unpleasant things to achieve them but it's all for the results that would come to fruit. Obtaining the runes with a few bloody prints on them, where he went to study them.
At the age of forty with his life dedicated to magic, he unlocked the secrets of those mystic runes after a decade of experimenting. A few disastrous results but he obtained what he hoped for, a method to achieve immortality which would be permanent. Escribing the spell onto his body which held his physical form together and eventually after a few additional lines which mended the scars. As time would pass, his later edits to the template of the spell allowed some recovery of aging as well. Allowing him to live much longer than what was possible and sought to give this gift to his family. Of course, they accepted and their bodies were able to face the test of time, as they lived for a very long time. However, while they would remain unaffected by time, everything else would not wait for them.
They only began to realize that their little bubble would not shelter them, long past the rumors which World War 1 would sprout itself up. It was they who were stuck in the crossfire between the warring countries as they fled for safety. With a few close calls, they survived as they bunkered down in Ireland and faced the brunt of the war with magical defenses. Despite the war, they thought everything was fine after the Triple Entente won the war. However, it slowly dawned on them when Hitler came into power, the red herrings were being released and they fled.
Immigrating to the United States, while familiar to Daniel, it was a long time since he visited the country as he supported his parents. Allowing them to settle down in the great nation of America, they fully assimilated themselves with their neighbors as best they could. Even getting into the war effort, as they participated in many of the orchestrated events both nationally and from the neighborhood. Using magic to disguise them through the years and moving several times, they amazing never were caught. Cheering along with the rest of the Allies when the end of World War 2 came to be and the defeat of the Axis Powers.
To survive the war but only die in the aftermath was saddening, as Daniel and his family were targeted by Hunter during the Red Scare. A popular time like the Salem Witch Trials where hunters sought to uproot covens of witches. In these tragic events, his parent's death and many more witches were killed and hidden with many innocents. These attacks were lead by Joseph McCarthy who organized many of these hunts and was the most notable hunter in his time. With hundreds if not thousands witches dead, Daniel only survived by his bare teeth when he moved to less populated states where hunters were less likely to hunt. Eventually, finding himself in the early 2000s in Carlsford where he made himself a resident. Feeling not obligated to mention that he was a witch, he heard of the coven here and they could think anything about him. It didn't matter so long they didn't go out of their ways to mess around with him.
Eventually, he grew into the community as he bought and ran his own place of Main Street where he ran a restaurant. Calling it The Golden Mug where it served mostly as a bar but was a surprisingly accommodating place with a few rooms to be rented if asked for. However, recently drama been stirring up with the neighborhood coven which he still hasn't joined and made sure his nature as a witch wasn't blatantly obvious.
Daniel is an advance user of enchantments in the form of runic magic, a form pertaining usually to magic from a Nordic background. Able to write letters which symbolize certain words which can create and reinforce magical phenomenon, in more modern uses it can be used to make magical shields which protect or reinforce objects with magic. However, with more study and specialization in runic magic, it is a language which can reproduce magic so long as you understand how to perform them. With single runes being weak in terms of how advance it is, stringing together with the correct runes into phrases or arrays can craft a mighty spell.
Usually, these runes have to be drawn onto a physical medium before their magic can be realized safely. If one is confident in their skills then one can recite their runes to cast spells at their own risk and should be limited to their knowledge to be safe.
Runes generally have either 'positive' or 'negative' effects which dictate whether they are either defensive/supportive in nature or offensive/debilitating. Meaning that each spell has an predetermined effect when being constructed which can only do that, as an defensive spell cannot be used to harm or an offensive spell cannot be used to do anything else but harm.
Ehwaz - Rune of Strength: A common rune capable of being placing onto an object to increase its strength and durability akin to metal if its an inferior material. If placed on a metal, its durability is increased at a reduced amount but still functions as normal. However, if cast on his body (his arms generally), it temporarily gives him strength to do a variety of things and no doubt allow him to easily harm the average human. It adds a good 50 lbs of weight on him when he's benching if that counts for anything.
Kenaz - Rune of Sight: A more uncommon rune which can be applied to ocular devices and used for a variety of purposes. Amplification or extension of sight is simple, while piercing magical abilites may take some time to adjust the magic to see through them. When placed on himself, he can see twice as far in the light and dark than a normal person.
Laguz + Sowilo + Mannaz - Runes of Healing: A common spell among runecaster which described on their bodies can heal scrapes and bruises easily. Intended for more serious injuries, it can handle gashes and wounds up to moderate severity before actually requiring real medical attention. In cases of severe or fatal damage, it can stabilize the person in a single burst of energy and slowly continue to knit the body together but they will still be in a terrible condition if not taken to a doctor.
ThursHagal - Strengthened Runes of Shielding: A combined rune of protection which is used in more magical battles, capable of defending the common spell thrown by a witch. Sufficient for most curses that are cast from afar as well which will be negated by this spell. Using it during battle is usually difficult or impossible but when placed on a object, it will indeed ward away spells and block them when hit. On apparrel, it protects against the magic of negative intent which is useful when placed on them
Hagalaz + Laguz + Isa + Nauthiz - Protective Runes of Endurance and Retaliation: Another sentence of runes which no true practioneer of runic magic shouldn't know. It protects against both physical and mystical attacks, using their energy to reinforce and fuel the spell itself. Any magic left from the runes after each attack will be transfer into a single point where once passed will unleashed the stored energy as a powerful counterattack.
NauthHagal - Runes of Good Luck: Akin to the good luck charms of the eastern practices, this runes provides the same effect. While you're probably not going to win the lottery. it'll certainly help and slightly improve everyday life if applied onto an object to be carried around. Applying this onto the body will give a small boost to luck for a short instance but will face a surprisingly drain of stamina that approaches the point of exghaustion (trying to control fate ain't going to be easy).
Frgïle + NauthUr - Strengthened Runes of Deteriorating Luck: The first curse of the list, imbued usually in an object which will radiate its magic onto its victims. Causing a moderate decrease in luck to the person or place that it was set which will continue until the object the spell is casted on is destroyed. If casting this rune onto himself, it must be something that Daniel really must want to fail to do so which will most likely fail.
Frgïle + ThursFaHagal - Strengthened Runes of Fire Cage: The first defensive spell on the list, it is a combination of runes which when cast will cause a powerful cage of fire to trap the victim in. Its naturally weak to elements that would destroy fire but resistant to those that it naturally is.
Frgïle + ThursFaHagal - Strengthened Runes of Consuming Fire: The first offensive spell which when cast will create a fireball which have a soft homing effect, angling itself slightly to try and best capture its victim. It will not do instanteous 90 degree turns, but it can curve itself to chase its target if it has the space to do so or be extinguished. At its quick speed, it rarely has the change to redirect itself but when it hits its target, the flames will rarely extinguish themselves naturally. Similar to a curse which will chase its target if it ever falls away, it can only be smothered by another spell or runs out of energy to sustain itself.
Frgïle + ThursFaOs - Strengthened Runes of Beam of Fire: A simple spell but power that it literally is a laser of fire which will burn through most fabrics immediately if not protected. Metal will slowly heat themselves to melting point and be destroyed within minutes depending on what it is. Its capable of inflicting second-degree burns easily and third-degree if sustained in its entirety.
Frgïle + ThursIsOs - Strengthened Runes of Spear of Ice: Another simple spell which is like a toothpick going through a piece of fruit. Its sharp enough to pierce through the human body and thinner pieces of metals but is fragile compared to sturdier materials. Sharp enough to make a cut into a mature tree but not sturdy enough to pierce through against its toughness.
Frgïle + ThursHagal - Strengthened Runes of Binding: An empowered curse which binds the body that it is written on, restraining the limbs from being used and slightly numbing the body for the duration. It is capable of being written on the body of the intended target for more durability or placed on a object which activated will perform the spell.
Literally pages of more combination but you get the general idea...
N/A for now...
Made a rune mage with a dubious background, just hit me (gently) up to inform me of anything. Hopefully his use of runic magic if fine with you, its kinda complex and needs some studying to understand so I generalized it. If you want to see my sources where I (blatantly) took from, just ask and I'll pm you @shagranoz

The Golden Cup
The Golden Cup is a small restaurant which during its open hours during the day is a cafe and bakery which sells a variety of food to the public. Often selling coffee in the morning and afternoon to passing people in the morning along with items for breakfast or those who skipped it at lunch. However, there are other dishes which they sell for a fair meal at a reasonable price which taste great for what its worth. During the evening, it turns into less of a cafe and more into a bar where adults come out to play. Serving a variety of alcohol which he stores safely under the counter and bar where it's easily accessible yet hidable.
The Golden Apple is remarkable in the fact that it's a notable place in the town of Carlsford and a popular place for tourists. The place is well staffed to handle it's size as a multi-storied building and has an upstairs which is accessible by stairs. It is big enough to host a restaurant on the bottom floor and serve as suitable living quarters for Daniel with a Master Bedroom along with a bathroom connected to it.
Underneath the restaurant, there is a basement which is secured by a hefty door which is locked by two deadbolts from each side and magically reinforced by magic. It guards the storage of materials used to supply the restaurant that are needed and more, anything else is placed into the kitchen. Its a perfect spot to perform anything magical which he doesn't want anyone to see and well secured to prevent the ordinary person from entering.
Personality: Though soft-spoken, Lars is very strong-willed, he is not afraid to stand up for what he believes in and to for what he wants. Many take advantage of his quiet attitude but most of the time he tries to ignore it. Lars is more of a do-er, he can be kind and likes to show it through his deeds and actions.
Bio: Lars' mother and father where both witches but hid the truth from him for most of his life. They would use spells to shield and lock away his power. This means his childhood was a show of smoke and mirrors, every time the spells would weaken and Lars would start to do things that were not human, his parents would freak out and use even more powerful spells to lock his abilities.
It was not until he graduated high school that his parents came clean, they told him all about the coven, magic, and what he really was. Lars felt betrayed and hurt, he wondered for months how his parents could do what they did with no explanation at all, and all he got was a "I'm sorry" and the occasional guilt on their faces. He now spends his days learning how to control his magic and find out who he really is.
Magical Specialty: Elemental Spell Casting. mostly spells that have to do with the elements and healing, also he learned how to use telekinesis.
Bio: Lar Samuel Crow is the child of Jenifer and Brain Crow. His mother is an average witch who specializes in healing and enchantments, while his father was more of a man of mystery.
