Come Out To Play Mahlimae!

Our adventure begins on the first day of winter break in small rural town of Alta Vista, Iowa. Exciting right? A group of 5 young teenagers who spend their time hanging out and getting into trouble when they aren't at school or helping out at the farm at home. With a population of less than 300, everyone tends to know everything about everyone.

Perhaps this is why it was so strange when a group of teenagers came across a new creature in the midst of their exploring a old abandoned house at the edge of the forest. They couldn't very well tell their parents that they broke into the house, and who would believe their discovery if they did? The creatures don't speak very clearly, besides a varying pitched 'mahlimae' in response to everything.

Despite the multiple questions the group had, they decided they would continue to come and visit the mahlimae at least once every day. They would try to feed them, as well as see if they could find out some more about the strange creatures. It wasn't until the third day that the mahlimae couldn't be found in their usual spot.

The group searched high and low and couldn't find the creatures anywhere in the abandoned house.

When everyone got home that night, things changed.

Also, will the side effects give them powers or will they remain normal humans?

As a group I wanted us to decide whether we wanted (as you exampled)
A) Silly - ie: Cant see the color blue
B) Serious - ie: Vomiting fits

This wouldn't be everyone receiving these same effects- but based on your Mahlimae choice something unique.

For the most part they would remain normal humans, but definitely side effects could be shown to create something of more of a supernatural effect- for each category. Something that comes into mind are those "Useless super power" things where it's like "So and so can teleport wherever they want freely but they always end up there naked"

When talking to Lauryn, one could expect to hear at least one snarky or sarcastic comment. She is extremely honest, blunt, and at times can be a bit rude. She's always been described as having "no filter." Because of this, she doesn't make friends very easily, but once she does she proves herself to be a very trustworthy and loyal friend. Lauryn has always been a clever and intelligent girl, but has problems concentrating for too long on things that don't immediately interest her, and puts more time and effort into her artwork than schoolwork. Biography

Lauryn was born on December 10th, 1998 in Brooklyn, New York. Her parents had been dating for just three months before her mother ended up pregnant with she and her fraternal twin sister, Erykah. As a result, the couple got married and moved to Iowa just two years after they'd been born, something about them being tired of living in the city. Lauryn had a fairly normal childhood. As she and her sister grew older, they started to develop their own different personalities. White her sister was more quiet and reserved, Lauryn was a "wild child." While her sister was more intelligent and practical, Lauryn was more creative and imaginative. By the time the twins were eight years old, they knew exactly who they were and who they wanted to be. Everything came crashing down, however, when Erykah was diagnosed with leukemia at the age of nine. Just two short years later, she passed away. Life had never been the same since her sister died; it was like a piece of her died with her sister. That was, until, she met her best friends, who have slowly helped bring her back to life.

• Along with being the only two girls in the group, Lauryn and Gina's similar personalities and love for the arts have bonded them pretty closely. Gina can sometimes annoy Lauryn by talking too much, but they never get into big arguments. Overall, they get along pretty well.

• Lauryn has known Titus ever since he moved into his Grandmother's house next door. They didn't officially meet, however, until they ran into each other while getting new piercings, and from that point on, it was history. Lauryn sees Titus as a very close friend, a brother, even. It was nice for her to have him around after her sister passed away.

Georgina was named after her grandmother that she never met. A great start to a life worth of not doing too much in a town that never saw too much action. Thankfully she was born into the age of technology and has the internet and the handful of electronics she owns to keep her busy. When not going to school she tends to get into mischief with her group around town, rather it be going out into the woods or eating burgers and drinking malts at the diner in town.

Gina is closest to her father in the respect of her parents, she admires him for being the head of the family, and always keeping his cool when mom tends to freak out and overreact. • Being the only other girl in the group tied these two pretty quickly, but their similar personalities and love for the arts bonded them closer. Gina is totally obsessed with Lauryn's hometown of New York and asks about it whenever she has the opportunity. She sometimes annoys Lauryn by talking too much, but they never get into too big of arguments.

• In the words of Gina's mother, "that boy is TROUBLE". Despite the warnings, Gina has made quite a friendship with the older boy. The two tend to be the loud and obnoxious ones of the group, but they mean well. She doesn't really like when he smokes, and lets him know about it. Gina has gotten in trouble many a time being caught talking on the phone with him way late into the night.

• Gina's mother and Sebastian's mother had been friends for awhile before the two were even born. • Zane and Gina's older siblings met and started dating in middle school, which ultimately led the two to be forced into interaction with one another from a relatively early time. Biography

Titus grew up to parents of Caucasian and African-American descent. Throughout his youth, he was a little confused about himself, not knowing what to identify himself as but have been picked on by other children because of it. At the age of ten, his parents were killed in an automobile accident which left him to live with his Maternal Grandmother (Caucasian).

After his parents died, Titus had to think of ways of comfort which pretty much got him involved in sports, mostly Football, Basketball, and learned a little MMA. His smoking habits started and his love for tattoos and piercing left him with a few. Usually, Titus have to keep himself busy but it was hard to do in such a small town like Alta Vista which he hates living in because there was hardly anything there.

There have been situations where he dealt with racism but realized, fighting would not cure ignorant racist assholes of their stupidity and learned to shrug off problematic situation. With a loving grandmother and good friends, Titus had all the family he needed but at times....he'd have bad dreams of losing them like he did his parents and that scares him the most. Titus wishes to leave Alta Vista someday and go travel the world.

Biography

Sebastian was born in the cold months, the youngest of three. His sister Marissa was six years old when he was born. Sebastian never really knew his eldest sibling, Rachel, incredibly well. She was ten when he was born and she left the small Iowa town for college the day she was old enough. Marissa and Sebastian grew up closely, however they eventually became distant when their parents began to have issues with their marriage. Events such as alcoholism and verbal abuse slowly became more commonplace in the Monroe household, until eventually Marissa and Sebastian came to expect it. The middle child followed in her sister's footsteps and left the small town as soon as possible. After living in a troubled household for a few years by himself, Sebastian soon began to distance himself from his parents. Spending more time with friends after school, looking for people to teach him piano, running track, anything to escape his family. He wasn't truly in danger at home, however it was usually unpleasant. Despite his sisters' actions and his parents poor parenting, Sebastian is determined not to leave Alta Vista. This is hometown and he won't abandon it.
Side note: His parents relationship has improved significantly over the years, however there are still isolated incidents of violence (mental, verbal, and twice physical), but they are on the mend.

• Sebastian sees Lauryn as one of the most dependable people in his life. While his father disapproves of almost every friend Sebastian has, he's always approved of Lauryn for her relaxed nature. Sebastian's always been the more dramatic of the two, and she always offsets him with a zen spirit and a calm mind. Whenever they hang out, it's normally a peaceful time without any cause for panic, but that doesn't mean the two of them can't get into some exciting situations together.

• Gina and Sebast both grew up in Alta Vista, meeting each other in their younger years via their mothers. Their relationship has been healthy for both of them throughout. Sebastian depends upon Gina to keep him steady. He trusts her pretty much the most out of anyone.

• "Oh, look, it's our resident asshat."
• Sebastian and Toc's relationship has been what some could describe as "rocky" ever since it begun. The two inspire a natural competition that pisses the other one off, but they don't let it come between them being friends. Every once and a while they get into a spat over some dumb incident, however most nights they kick it back and relax with their poison of choice. Sebastian sees Toc as his constant competition, someone who needs to be humbled; who better than Sebast to do it?

• Kestin Zane Alderson:
• "I don't think I really know Zane. He's cute though."
• Sebastian and Zane's relationship is comprised of deflected questions and prickly humor. Sebastian doesn't know much about Zane beyond a surface level, and intentionally makes sure that Zane doesn't know too much about him. They're still good friends, able to laugh, joke, and hang out, however the deepest their relationship gets is Sebastian flirting with Zane.

Ooh this would be interesting if the silly side effect started to become serious- in a related way.
For example- (using your previous mention) You can't see blue things to complete and total blindness
or you can teleport and be naked and that eventually turns into you are killing someone as you "replace" their teleportation spot.
