One year ago people started waking up with no memories of the past, though they did have a few skills. Everyone could speak at least one language, they could read and write, they could do math in their heads, and seemed to have better health than they remembered, though this was no more than a feeling. There were huge numbers of dead human bodies around, and the animals, which seemed to be doing better than the people, soon started making their ways into areas where the awakened humans lived to eat these bodies. The people were forced to fight back using whatever they could salvage and learn to use. Soon people discovered by accident that if you relaxed, and said "tree" to yourself a kind of web would appear in front of you, with gages for "physical stress", "mental stress", and "cyber stress". This web had an inner ring with "body", "mind", and "cyber" circles on it. If you selected them and the gage which corresponded to it was at zero, you could select another circle that was tied to it to improve your body or mind, or to give yourself magical powers. Selecting it, though, would make the gage increase.
These powers, under the "cyber" circle, had strange names, but could let you do even stranger things:
Communications: Lets you sense the locations of some ruins and buildings, communicate with "computers" and the monsters known as "drones", and allowed you to initiate telepathy with people, assuming they were willing. The greater the distance, the less detail could be shared, though.
Thermionics: Lets you heat and cool things, creating fire and ice. At higher levels, it gives you power over something called "plasma" and something called "B-E Condensates".
Electromagnetism: Gives you lightning power and magnet powers, which are very effective against "computers" and "drones".
Gravitics: Lets you move things with your mind, though with improvements to it you can learn to control a specific type of thing or control things more finely.
Quantum: Allows you to do several strange things, which haven't been fully explored due to the unpredictable nature of this part of the "web". Some people use it to establish a telepathic link with one other person which isn't limited by distance. Some use it to teleport, leaving behind more of themselves the further they transport.
Photonics: Produce light, absorb light, shoot beams of light, produce shields of light. Also produce illusions.
Whatever you choose on the "Cyber" list also appears as a small image on the forearm of your dominate hand, and you can select which ability you want to use by either touching the image for it to make it your power, or with practice, by concentrating on it.
We aren't sure what the world contains or why no one can remember anything, but we just received word that a building was found nearby with the name "Ellis Pharmaceuticals" on it, the same name that appears if you as yourself for "help", as a menu will appear with options and "Copyright 2030, Ellis Pharmaceuticals" at the bottom of the menu. The town we are in is bringing together an expedition to travel to the building to find out what happened, and we are the ones who agreed to go on that expedition.
