CHAPTER 1: The Cure

6am: Day 1
3 hours before first contact of infection

Mecha City

The sound of the alarm buzzing gave Dallen an immediate headache to start the day. His hangover didn't help either. The 36 year old lawyer rolled over and turned it off, giving out a sigh as he did so.

"Fuck..." he muttered, massaging his temples.

Just another day. His morning routine consisted of a warm shower, followed by putting on a suit. Eating some hot breakfast, then smoking far too many cigarettes before taking his daughter, Kelsey, to school and then heading to work at the courthouse. This day, however, he was feeling particularly lazy.

"Again? It's early," replied the woman sleeping next to him. She wasn't an every day thing in Dallen's routine, but it was a nice change once in awhile. Her name was Lucy, she was just another lawyer working in the city. They weren't law partners, and in fact usually butted heads against one another in the court rooms. Kelsey hated her.

"Yeah, yeah," Dallen said, turning his body to prepare to get up. "I'm thinking of calling in..."

"Oh? Is that how you keep winning cases? You don't want to disappoint your image, now."

"Eh, you're right," He pushed himself up and did a few stretches. "It's an easy day today, just a bunch of dui's and traffic tickets. Meet for lunch?"

"Of course, we'll be in the same building anyway."

They kissed and went their separate ways. Lucy headed straight for downtown after a quick shower and getting dressed. Dallen prepared breakfast for Kelsey, getting ready himself as he went. By the time Kelsey woke up he was already in his suit and tie, ready for the day.

"I'm not feeling well..."was the first thing Kelsey said to him.

"You sure? Father's can tell when their kids are lying, you know."

"No you can't! I'm seventeen! Those lies don't work on me anymore!"

"You have thirty minutes..."

Kelsey huffed, then threw a stuffed rabbit at him.

Primping her hair so every strand was meticulously in place, Elizabeth paused to examine her reflection in the full length mirror. After tugging down on the black pencil skirt, she smoothed out any wrinkles that might have been there by running her hands over the fabric. Turning to the side to double-check her profile, she was satisfied by how professional her appearance was and hoped to make a good first impression with the judge. Approving herself with a confident nod, she grabbed her purse and headed out the door.

The last thing she'd needed was to give her ex yet another reason to deny her the rights to see their son, but here she was getting ready to go to the court house to plead no contest for DUI. As much as she wanted to fight the charge, she couldn't even remember the night in question. Her friend had given her the card of a local attorney who'd walked her through the best course of action even if she could barely understand the reasoning. She was supposed to be meeting him at the courthouse soon.

Unfortunately, with her license temporarily suspended, she failed to account the extra time it would take for the bus to reach her destination. Luck was not on her side today as they hit every stoplight and had to wait at every stop. By the time she finally reached the courthouse she was running late. Removing her high heels there at the bus stop, Elizabeth ran down the sidewalk as fast as she could. Ignoring the funny looks she received from the people walking down the street on their cell phones with their cups of coffee in their hands, she expertly dodged her way through the crowd as she raced up the steps to the large glass building.

Thanking the person holding the door open as she hopped on one foot trying to put her shoes back on and hoping that the new runs in her hose weren't as noticeable indoors as they were out in the sun, she stood feeling completely lost in the middle of the entry way. She'd been to the courthouse before, but it was to renew the tags on her car or update her driver's license picture--not to stand in front of a judge.

Puffing her cheeks and blowing air from her mouth, she made her way over to the plaque to read the floor numbers and somehow figure out where the hell she was supposed to go next.

9:00am Sunday
The beginning of the outbreak

After Kelsey caught the bus to her high school, Dallen made his way to the subway station. He had a truck, but Mecha city was at its' peak of industrialization. The population was 603,488 and the job industry was booming. Almost every massive building within the city gave out hundreds of jobs, mainly in hotel management. At night, the city lit up in all its glory for anyone to see from miles and miles on end. Gambling, prostitution, and entertainment. The city of life, they called it. Dallen had been caught in traffic far too many times to be foolish enough to mess with that anymore. The transit bus went underground the city, as well as over top, overlooking and reaching almost every part of it. The view to work never disappointed.

He was greeted with a fresh cup of coffee when he arrived. His partner, and only friend, Riley, being the sole reason behind it.

"So, I was thinking maybe we could switch up our cases today," Riley spoke plainly. "I mean, my judge does like you better. She told me herself."

"Well, I might take you up on that," Dallen said. "My client is late."

"Eww, that's not good," Riley replied. "For her. So, what about tonight? Bar?"

"You know I can't." He thought of Kelsey. Being a single father made it harder to hang out, but he liked it better that way.

"Whoa, check out the legs on red, by the front," Riley said with a wide smile across his face.

"That's my client," Dallen said as he saw her, handing his half emptied cup of coffee to Riley.

"Hey, bring her out tonight!"

Dallen just ignored him and walked over.

"Ms. Darling, good morning. Excuse me if I'm brief, but you're late. Follow me."

He walked her through the necessary steps as they went inside one of the court rooms. As the last case ended, Elizabeth's was immediately up next due to Dallen having favor with the judge. After a few quick 'yes's' and approval of Ms. Darling taking all of the required DUI classes, the case was dismissed once the client paid off the 638 dollar fee. They were in and out just like that, another easy day for Dallen. He took Elizabeth back out into the larger room which led to the cafeteria.

"That's it, just don't get in trouble again Ms. Darling," Dallen told her as they were about to part ways. He offered a handshake. "I've got another client to meet with, I wish you well ma'am."

It was that simple. Drunk driver's were beaming lights of money to him, but he did honestly hope she would learn from this experience. His cell rang as he watched Elizabeth leave. It was his daughter.

"Dad! Dad, you have to come get me!"

"What did I tell you about lying...?" he started.

"No, seriously dad! Look outside! It's all over the news! The school is on lockdown, I'm in a class-"

The phone suddenly lost reception. Dallen trifled with it for a few seconds, then moved out to the balcony of the floor he was on. He pulled out a cigarette and lit it up as he walked through the glass doors to the outside smoking section. He didn't realize his jaw had dropped at the site before him.

The once clear beautiful day turned dark in an instant. There was a large, thick fog encompassing the entire city. It covered the sun and darkened everything it touched. With a blaring sound that made Dallen's neck hair rise, a siren began sounding throughout the building. It was something he had never heard go off before, but he knew it meant something bad was happening. Could the mist be toxic?

Those trying to leave the 32 floor court building had a hard time, as massive security gates came down over all of the entrances. The siren continued to blare as a small panic started to arise. A few gunshots sounded off from the outside, putting people on greater edge. Not long after, Dallen could see the helicopters coming in. News team 3, 4, and 6. The mist rose high enough to even almost reach them in the air.

"What the hell..."

Everything happened so fast. As soon as she stepped off the elevator onto the appropriate floor, Mr. Larson had found her. There hadn't been time for pleasantries, a forced smile on her face as she apologized for being late and refrained from snapping at him for being curt. Since he was the one handling her case, she couldn't afford to get on his bad side.

Thinking she would be waiting for hours, much like a visit to the DMV, she was surprised by how quickly it went. It was mostly conceding to things she didn't need, but as long as it put this mess behind her then she would agree to anything. It was all very straight forward. The only thing that made her hesitant was the exorbitant fee she was required to pay. While she had no choice in the matter, she would be using a good chunk of her rent money to pay it off—not to mention the money she'd had to shell out for the lawyer. She had no idea how she was going to make up for it.

“Thank you, Mr. Larson,” she responded when it was over, shaking his hand once it was offered. The farewell as curt as his welcome, she had nothing of interest to add and left. One problem might have been crossed off of her list, but now she had others to figure out. Already she could feel a headache coming on, but at least she wasn't in a rush. The bus ride back would give her time to think.

But Elizabeth didn't get very far before the deafening sound of emergency alarms rang though the building. Everyone paused, looking at each other, some of them asking if this was some kind of fire drill they didn't know about. Confusion and uncertainty flowed through the crowd before the security gates came crashing down to keep everyone inside and people began to panic.

Having been on her way out, Elizabeth was one of the ones closest to the exit. Police were setting up barricades wearing heavy armor behind large shields while people were screaming and running in their direction. Her hands wrapped around the bars to the gates as she leaned forward to get a better view. People inside crowded around her, shoulders pressing together with strangers as everyone tried to catch a glimpse of what was happening outside.

Shots fired into the frantic crowd and she could hardly believe what she was seeing. “What are they doing?!” she exclaimed in horror, the people around her crying out in a similar fashion. Unsure at what was going on, she saw a woman fall from a stray bullet not meant for her. Another person running up on her, Elizabeth thought they were there to help.

She was wrong. They knelt down beside her, hands digging into her torso. Still alive, she screamed hysterically as they ripped out her organs. Suddenly feeling sick, Elizabeth lifted a hand to her mouth as she gagged and squeezed her way passed the other people in the lobby. There were some like her who retreated from the site and others more morbidly curious that continued gathering around the windows to watch. She had seen enough.

Reaching a hand out for one of the cushioned chairs to stabilize herself after the shock, she took a seat. Fear and panic taking a hold of everyone now, she reached into her purse to pull out her phone. Searching through her contacts she found the number to her ex and tapped it with her finger, pleading audibly for anyone nearby to hear for someone to pick up the phone. It went straight to voice mail. “Shit,” she whispered. “Damn it. Come on!”

A shriek from across the large room, Elizabeth shot up from her seat. The phone fell from her hand onto the stone floor. “What's wrong with her?” she heard. Craning her neck, she could see a body laying on the floor.

“I don't know. She just fainted,” someone answered. People started leaving their posts at the windows to see what was going on around them. Elizabeth bent down to pick up her phone. The screen was cracked and blank. She cursed as she tried to get it working again.

“She's okay,” someone called out loudly. “Give her some room to breathe. She's-”

A scream broke out. Head whirling to see what was happening, there were too many people blocking her view. All she could hear was a man yelling, “Get her off me! Get her off!”

The virus was airborne. It had seemed to be coming from the dark mist that was covering all of Mecha city. It quickly went to work once it was inhaled, bringing a sharp stinging sensation to the insides just before everything gets worse. Much worse. The virus attacked healthy organs, turning those people dead and ravenous within seconds of contact. Once it reached the bloodstream, it was all over. However, it did not turn everybody. Those with weaker immune systems seemed to reject the mist entirely, though they did not know how yet. The streets outside the court house were quickly filled with the undead. Those unlucky enough to die, turned to utter fear and panic as everything changed into a warzone.

The doors locked behind him as he tried to re-enter the building from the balcony. No luck. It seemed all the doors throughout the structure were also on lockdown. He was stuck on the 32nd floor of a 72 floor building...outside. Finishing off his cigarette, he flicked it away into the harsh winds. The mist covered him and the balcony whole, blackening all sight momentarily. He took his suit jacket off and wrapped it around his left arm, using it as a shield to deflect the debris that came along with the dark mist.

He took another look down at the city below him, still barely being able to. The police were already overrun. A massive riot erupted as far as the eyes could see. It looked like a war, but he still couldn't exactly tell what was really happening.

Dallen began pounding on the locked door again, giving a middle finger to a security camera set just above it. The next thing he knew, the door unlocked and he pushed through back to the inside.

"Dallen! Dallen, come on!" came a familiar voice. It was Lucy, his girlfriend. She propped open the stairwell door and waved for him to hurry. Without question he joined her inside, hearing some people from the cafeteria turning the corner to try and get inside as well. The door immediately locked them out.

"What's going on?" Dallen asked.

Lucy didn't answer, she held a pair of scissors in one hand while a hand-held radio was in the other. She rushed a few floors up the stairs and he followed. "We're here!" She spoke into the radio, as the door unlocked. She then brought him to a much quieter floor, higher up in the building. Riley and a few others were here, a few of them familiar faces from court. Judge Williams, security officer Briggs, and a handful of lawyers and other officers. They were in a security room, with a bunch of monitors showing the various places of the building.

"Dal, you okay?" Riley asked, genuinely worried.

"Thanks for getting me," Dallen said.

"I hope it proves to be worth it," butted in the Judge. "Complete anarchy has erupted. It's a battle zone outside."

"We control the entire building from here," Briggs said. "-but if things don't shape up outside, I'm not sure how much longer we can stay inside. Every floor is packed with people, all of us locked in until-"

"Sir, sir!" another security guard spoke up. "The lobby, it's contaminated!"

Everyone in the room turned their heads to the monitor.

“Get her off me! Get her off!”

They watched in horror as an infected woman tackled someone else. She drove her teeth deep into his neck and ripped out a hunk of flesh. The crowd dispersed around them, but there was no where any of them could go. Everything was on lockdown, except the elevators. The man bleeding out from his neck turned very quickly, his eyes bleeding out and pushing out streaks of blood from them. It wasn't long before the next nearest was bitten, and then the next after that. It turned violent all around, as confused and scared people grabbed anything they could to fight back. Shoulder to shoulder, people bumped into one another. Others were trampled, only to be picked apart by the undead. The momentum of the crowd shifted away from the gated front entrance and toward the back of the large room, where a single elevator was still working.

"Shut everything down, now!" the Judge yelled, suddenly feeling the intensity of the moment. "Close off the entire floor, close off every single door! We can't let that disease reach us!"

Lucy grabbed Dallen's hand and turned to him, her eyes tearful and filled with emotion. "...I'm scared."

Everyone in the lobby was trapped. There was no where to go. Elizabeth ran towards the emergency stairwell, but even those doors had been shut tight. Joining others to bang on it with her fists, other people climbed on top of each other to reach the security cameras, begging with desperate tears in their eyes to whoever might be watching to save them.

Spotting the reflection of someone behind from the small window in the door, she managed to turn around and duck just in time as they lunged forward to attack. People were tearing others open, ripping apart their insides and—something Elizabeth couldn't believe she was seeing—eating them. Unable to process what was happening, she ran around the enclosed space with everyone else, twisting and dodging as they reached out trying to grab her. Others weren't so lucky as they were caught.

Seeking shelter behind the large desk, she hid beneath it along with a couple other people. The woman appeared to work there given by the identification badge clipped onto her shirt. The man was dressed in a fine dress shirt which gave Elizabeth the impression that he was one of the many lawyers going in and out of the courthouse conducting business. They both turned to look at her when she joined them as she tried to control her breathing to where she couldn't be heard.

“What do we do?” the man asked quietly in her direction—as if somehow she knew the answer to that.

Exchanging looks with the other woman who'd hidden down there, Elizabeth finally gave both of them a helpless shrug of her shoulders. “The hell should I know?” she retorted angrily, fear evident in her eyes. The only thing she could think about was how she was about to die and that she didn't even know if her son was okay. Was this happening where they were or was this an isolated incident? She didn't know and there wasn't any way for her to find out.

“There's still power,” the woman whispered to them. Her voice barely audible, Elizabeth had to strain her ears to hear her. “The elevator in the back might still work. If we run, we might be able to reach it.”

“Are you crazy?” the man demanded. His eyes bulged out of his head at the proposition. “Aren't we supposed to avoid elevators during times like these?” He looked to Elizabeth with the hope that she would back him up; he would find no support from her and he looked frustrated at that fact. “We should be finding a way out. Not up,” he protested.

Remaining calm despite the situation, something that Elizabeth found herself impressed by, the woman said, “We can do that after we get out of here alive.”

Hearing the bloodcurdling screams and tearful pleading of those just a few feet away from them, her mind was made up. “Die here or die there. At least the elevator gives us a chance,” Elizabeth stated. However slim of a chance it might have been. The woman gave her a grateful nod for agreeing with her and while the man might not have liked it, he seemed to reluctantly accept that he didn't really have a choice in the matter.

Inching her way to the edge of the desk, Elizabeth peeked out to see what was going on around the other side. An involuntary gasp escaping her lips, she covered her hand over her mouth. Eyes scanning the room until she saw the elevator, she knew now was the best time to make a run for it with everyone distracted by the chaos. She took off towards it weaving through the crowd—which was a difficult task to do in her heels.

The woman followed close after her, faster than she was but less graceful as she failed to dodge the panicked people around her and bumped shoulders with several of them.

Cursing as he was left last, with no other option left to him but to follow he went after them as fast as he could. The women already in the elevator, Elizabeth's hand hovered over the buttons to operate the door. The woman beside her ushering him on with a frantic wave of her hand, they all gasped as someone came up behind him and grabbed him.

Screaming in fear, he danced around and quickly shrugged off his jacket, his moves sparked unwanted attention in their direction. He ran towards the elevator with the people behind him close behind. “Shit!” Elizabeth exclaimed, slamming her hand on the close door button repeatedly though it didn't make the process any faster.

“No!” both the man and woman yelled in unison. Making a leap for it, he barely made it inside before the doors finished closing. He glared at Elizabeth yelling, “What the hell was that?!” The woman knelt down beside him, checking him over and letting out a sigh of relief when she didn't see anything.

Looking at the two of them, she crossed her arms defensively across her chest. “What did you expect me to do? They were on your ass.”

“Lets not fight,” the other woman pleaded with an exasperated sigh as she pressed the button to a higher floor. “Lets just try to put our heads together and figure a way out of this building.”

The elevator got up a few floors before shutting off completely. The backup generator allowed a single light to still flicker on.

...

Noon

It took a few hours to get everything as organized as it could be. The people left still alive on the upper floors of the skyscraper finally realized that nobody was going anywhere. The staircase doors were opened on certain levels, and told by instructions from the intercom, everyone moved together on floors 32, which was a large area with a cafeteria and other offices, and levels 33 and 34. With the generators, the bathrooms still worked and so did the lights. Everyone was forced to stay and wait this thing out. The cafeteria would supply some extra time, but though the space was available, all of the food was under guard already. Judge Williams quickly found herself in the leading role.

"As you all know by now..." the judge started. She was speaking calmly into the intercom for all to hear, safely still in the security room on the 35th floor. "...our city, is under some kind of attack. We believe it to be contagious, whether it is airborne or not, we don't know yet. The entire first floor is contaminated, as our the streets outside. we are all trapped here." She spoke bluntly, not trying to sugarcoat any part of it. "We have no choice but to try and wait this thing out. All connections with the outside are off, so all we have is one another. As far as we can tell right now, none of you are infected with this virus, however, we will still keep our distance as a precaution. We have enough food to last us a few months, which will be given out fairly over the next coming days. We ask that you stay calm, leave the solutions to the military. Thank you-"

"...so that's it?" Lucy said, her arms crossed over her chest. A mixture of sunlight and darkness was fading into the room from the window blinds. "We just wait it out? What if the military doesn't come?"

The judge ignored Lucy's comments and walked off, entering through a door that led to her new quarters. Riley shrugged, then took another look at all of the computer monitors.

"Dal, isn't that your client?" he questioned, pointing at the elevator monitor. It was. Her and two others were trapped inside, the elevator unmoving.

"It is," Dallen replied. "I'll get her."

He turned to leave, but the head of security stood in his way. "We can't turn the power back on-"

"Just give me access to the elevator on this floor, I'll bring them up,"

"We can't bring anymore people here," Briggs told him. "You were a lucky exception."

"Then open level 32, I'll drop them off in there and come back here myself," Dallen said, getting slightly agitated.

Briggs gave a nod, getting out of the way and heading over to the controls. Lucy stopped Dallen once more, but just to give him a kiss on the cheek. Her eyes said everything, and then he was off down the hallway. A green light flickered on the side panel of the elevator doors, indicating that they were on. The double doors opened, revealing the inside of the elevator shaft. The long cables holding it all together seemed distant, with the elevators unmoving some space below. Dallen gave out a deep breath, then lunged forward. He jumped and caught onto the cables, easily sliding down and onto the top of the elevator. Opening the lid, he peered down inside at Elizabeth for the second time this morning.

"Ms. Darling, good morning!" he said, repeating their introduction from earlier. "Excuse me if I'm brief, but you're stuck. Follow me!"

He reached his arm down, offering to pull them all up to where he was. The elevator doors on level 32 suddenly opened, the floor just a few feet above them. As Dallen reached and pulled everyone up to the top of the elevator, a few curious individuals started peeking their heads into the shaft from the 32nd floor.

"Hey! Hey!! The elevators are open!! There's a way out!!" one man called out, and moments later a crowd of people formed at the scene to watch on. "Hey man, let us in!!"

The people were already aggravated and impatient, most of them not understanding what was going on in full detail. All they knew was that they were trapped on this floor, and they wanted out.

"Stay there, sir!" Dallen yelled back at him as he picked up the final person. "I'm just getting these people out!"

The man obeyed, but there was already a mutiny brewing within a lot of these people. Time would only tell how long it would take for it to come to fruition. For now, the small crowd of people helped them all up to the floor, the elevator shutting and locking behind them.

"Make room, move!"

It took awhile to get through the people, all of them curious and confused. Eventually everything settled back down, as everyone found their spots again to be. A group was in prayer by one of the large windows, most were in chairs and couches randomly set out, whether in the cafeteria or the other offices surrounding. There was food for them all here, but the stockpiles of the rest were in lockdown.

Dallen and the three he helped from the elevator all took to an area by an expresso shop.

"Dallen, thank you," the man from the elevator said. "It's me, Tyler. We worked on that case together, last year."

Dallen nodded to the young man. "We worked against each other."

"Yeah, yeah. Kirkman vs the state," he said. "You won, it was my first case."

"Are you okay?" Dallen turned his attention to Elizabeth. She still seemed a little bit in shock.

“Not fight?” the man demanded with an indignant scoff. Pointing an accusatory finger in Elizabeth's direction from his spot on the floor, he exclaimed, “She just almost killed me!” Stepping forward and glaring down at him, she opened her mouth to snap back a defense only to find herself distracted as they suddenly stopped. Everything went dark for a few seconds before harsh red lights flickered on. Elizabeth glanced towards the dark headed woman who stood in the corner with her eyes closed massaging her temples. Then she turned her attention back towards the man on the floor. “Oh, god. We're gonna die,” he wailed.

“Could you man the fuck up or something?” Elizabeth snapped as he began lamenting all of the things in his life he wouldn't get the chance to do. He was making her even more anxious than she already was which was saying something.

The woman with them opened her eyes. “Relax, Tyler,” the woman said. This was the first time Elizabeth had heard the man's name. She took a quick glimpse at the woman's badge; her name was Ava. “At least we didn't fall to our deaths.” While it was an attempt at being optimistic, both Elizabeth and the frightened lawyer turned to stare at her. If the thought that the elevator could go crashing down hadn't been in their thoughts before, the seed had certainly been firmly planted.

As minutes ticked on and hours passed, the three of them were starting to give up hope that they would be found. They each picked a corner of the elevator to call their own though Tyler's sprawled legs kept creeping into Elizabeth's space. She kept having to kick his leg out of her area to which he would retaliate by trying to take more of her space. Eventually she gave up, huddling and hugging her legs.

“They probably all ate each other,” Tyler said after a while. “We're gonna die in here.”

“Probably,” Elizabeth agreed, her voice sounding more hopeless and defeated than she would have liked. Ava remained quiet, shaking her head as she thought about the massacre in the lobby. As much as Elizabeth may have wanted to forget it, the gruesome scene was permanently ingrained in her mind; she imagined it was the same for all of them.

Catching Tyler's eye as he looked between the two woman, Elizabeth arched a curious brow in his direction though it was Ava who cared enough to actually ask, “What is it, Tyler?”

Even though he appeared to be uncomfortable, it didn't stop him from asking the question on his mind. “We should probably figure out who we would eat first if we end up stuck here, right?” he asked.

“Jesus Christ!” Elizabeth exclaimed in disbelief. What kind of monster was she trapped with? Taking off her heel, she held it up in defense. “You come near me, this is going in your eye.”

He became defensive. “It's a perfectly justifiable question!”

“No one is eating anyone!” Ava said, trying to keep the peace between the two. As both Elizabeth and Tyler scrambled to stand up and face off against one another, the woman held her arms out between them. “Children!” she exclaimed, despite being younger than the man herself. The two glared at one another with Elizabeth sticking her tongue out at him, but she relented to Ava and eventually put her shoe back on.

It was then they all heard something hit the roof of the elevator. Despite the animosity, the fear had them huddled together as they all looked at the roof. The emergency hatch at the top opening, none of them expected anyone to be there—and Elizabeth certainly didn't expect to see the face she saw. There was no hiding her surprise as the face of her overpaid lawyer peered down at them.

Seeing the face of someone coming to save them, Tyler was eager. He knocked into her and she stumbled back against the side of the elevator. Already having taken his hand, he was the first lifted out. As much as she hated it, she was just glad that he was finally out of her way. Ava was next, but only because Elizabeth insisted she be after Tyler rudely saved himself first without a second thought to either of them. She was the last one out.

With the help of everyone, they eventually made it onto a new floor and, because they didn't know what else to do, they all followed him.

Rolling her eyes as Tyler immediately started sucking up to him, Elizabeth just looked away towards one of the windows and kept her distance. Now that she was out of the elevator, she had to think of a way to get out of the building. With the first floor in chaos, she didn't know how they were going to do it. But she needed to get out and she needed to figure out not only what was going on, but how far it spread.

Not realizing that Dallen was speaking to her at first, it wasn't until Ava nudged her gently with her elbow that she snapped out of her trance. “Huh?” she asked, looking back at him. Ava repeating the question, for her own curiosity now as well, Elizabeth found herself suddenly uncomfortable with the sudden attention she was receiving.

“Of course I'm not okay,” she replied, unable to fathom how anyone possibly could be okay in this situation. She had just witnessed people killing one another downstairs. She'd heard their screams as they died and their prayers to be saved failed to be answered. Then she'd been stuck for hours in an elevator with one of the most selfish people she'd ever met. Okay was one of the last words she would use to describe herself.

Holding her arms out so they would all give her space, she backed away and went off to sulk at the other end of the shop.

"Not a very good question..." Tyler let slip out.

Dallen gave him a glare, then left the two of them to their own. He started walking back toward the stairwell, but a small group of people stood in his way. At the front of them was the man from the elevators, his steelworker uniform and nametag now clear to see: Buck Harrington.

"Listen mister, we're gonna need more than a 'just wait for help' type of solution," he said. "If we really are trapped, this food situation's not gonna cut it! Who puts you all in charge anyway?"

"I don't have any answers," Dallen replied. He started walking through the people, there was a slight hesitation, but they let him pass through easily enough.

He walked under the security camera, the doors unlocked, and he went back in.

8 pm Day 1

"The entire city is on fire," Judge Williams said. She was staring out one of the large windows that wrapped around the building.

"The city is on lockdown, too," Briggs spoke. "The bridges are raised. This thing might be contained solely to Mecha city."

"Wh--what does that mean?" his fellow security guard asked, a young apprentice named Steven Burwell.

"It means the military might bomb us, any minute now," Dallen said cooly, he was leaned against a desk and smoking a cigarette. "How's that radio working?"

"It's dead, nothing but-" the kid started, he turned the radio on as he spoke, halting when he heard a voice on the other end. He quickly found the frequency, then connected the broadcast to the airwaves of the building. The voice on the other end turned on every loudspeaker throughout. It was a loop.

"...this is happening because we have sinned...we did not listen...the flood has come...when there is no more room left in hell, the dead will walk the earth..."

"The fog is still out there..." Riley told Dallen, a glum look on his face.

"...this is our reckoning...the dead will rule the world..."

"Turn that shit off!" Judge Williams finally shouted. She was clearly having a massive headache, as she then ran off to her quarters for the night.

The broadcast was shut off. Everyone seemed to go their own ways afterward, all staying relatively quiet. They had no choice but to wait it out until tomorrow.

"I'm scared for Kelsey," Lucy said. Her, Dallen and Riley had their own corner of the floor. "...what if..."

"Don't," Dallen said. "Just don't. Get some rest if you can..." He turned himself to lay down on the carpet. The thoughts of his daughter were already burning in his mind. He wanted to think that she was still safe, hiding in her school classroom. A quick look outside the thick windows told otherwise.

Sleeping on the floor with nothing but the clothes on her back wasn't comfortable though a very nice man offered her to use his jacket as a blanket while Tyler complained about the loss of his during his run to the elevator. She accepted the offer though ended up using it as a pillow rather than a blanket and Elizabeth still didn't sleep well that night.

The next morning everyone was fed from what they had in stock. Someone had gone through already to ration out the food, not knowing how long they were going to be there. Since they were only in there a day, the portions were still generous though as time went on they would undoubtedly get smaller. Maybe even non-existent.

“I should be upstairs with the other big wigs. Why am I stuck down here with you nobodies?” Tyler asked, looking dejected as he picked at his food.

Elizabeth popped hers in her mouth and then, upon seeing that Tyler wasn't eating his, reached over to take some off his plate. Pretending to think about his question, she finally replied, “Maybe because you suck and no one likes you.”

The man scowled which caused her to grin; she was amused. Unable to eat due to the stress, he pushed his plate away and she happily took it from him. Things were going well until he said, “You can be such a bitch, Lizzy.” Then the smile quickly vanished from her face.

“I told you not to call me that,” she warned, her eyes narrowed in his direction. The fry she held hung limp, but she would throw it if she had to.

Now it was his turn to annoy her. “Lizzy, Lizzy, Lizzy,” he said. It was a pet peeve of hers whenever someone called her anything other than Elizabeth. Only a select few could get away with it and Tyler was not one of them. She'd much rather he continue calling her a bitch. She arched the fry in his direction and he flinched as it hit his chest. It was the only thing he ate.

But as soon as Ava sat down at the table things became calm. They minded themselves around her, but mostly because she was the nice one. A calm and rational head on her shoulders, the two of them tended to look towards her for guidance even if she didn't know anything more than the rest of them.

“Hear anything new?” Tyler asked.

The woman frowned and shook her head. “No. They're keeping things pretty quiet. I heard one of the security staff talk about fixing up a radio, but I don't think they ever got it to work.” She gave them an apologetic look feeling guilty that she couldn't bring them better news. It wasn't her fault though and neither of them held it against her.

Down on the 32nd floor, they hadn't been privy to much information which made the others unhappy. People wanted to leave, get home, and see their families. All Elizabeth wanted was to know if her son was okay, but even when someone had let her use their telephone, there wasn't any signal. She hadn't been able to get in touch with anyone and inside she was a complete wreck. But she was trying her best to hold up—something she was finding difficult without her usual vices.

“I can't stay locked up in here,” she sighed.

It was perhaps the only thing she and Tyler could agree on. “No one wants to be here,” he said. “But how do we get out?” Glancing between the two of them, he asked, “Do we even know what the situation in the lobby is like? Are they still down there?”

As bad as it was, as far as they knew, they were the only three to make it out of the lobby and they hadn't heard anything about it since. A few people had asked them what had happened, but none of them wanted to talk about it. No one understood what they had been through down there or knew how bad it really was—which was why the three of them mostly took to conversing amongst themselves, even if two of them didn't get along.

Day 2 morning

Shifts were taken throughout the night. When it was Dallen's turn, he watched the dead on level 1. He watched them until he noticed a few patterns. They were attracted to the various blinking lights. When no people were around, the undead seemed to just stay in place. He rewound the tape of Elizabeth's escape, clenching his teeth as he saw the chaos unfold again. Then he noticed something he did not expect. He rewound again, just to make sure. There was a little girl, his daughter's age. Her mother hid her into a low cabinet just before she was devoured by the dead. That little girl is still in there!

With the morning came the sun. The fog had seemingly disappeared completely, leaving the building in rays of sunlight. The streets were littered with the dead, a massive amount of infected just wandering around aimlessly. The comms stopped working again, and the group moral was very low.

Dallen showed them all what he had found, and to his surprise he received mixed feelings on the matter. Most thought it would be suicide, but Dallen was persistent. In the end, a plan was made.

Noon

The doors to the lobby had been opened. From the 35th floor, flares were shot out to the streets. A lot of the dead inside the lobby began to follow after the distractrion, and when a good number were through, the doors locked again. The rest would have to be dealt with up close.

Dallen and Briggs came down to the 32nd floor to speak with everyone. It had been awhile since anyone heard word, but regardless, none of them were going to like what was about to be said.

"The situation is still the same," Briggs told everyone. "Worse, actually. We're looking for volunteers." He would use his own security team, but unfortunately he and Steven were the only two not working the floor room.

"For what...?" Buck asked.

"There's a little girl still alive on the first floor," Dallen told them. "She's trapped. We're going to get her, could use some back up."

A small outburst of emotion struck everyone, as an argument was beginning. Briggs held his hands up and gave off a few yells to calm them all back to speaking level again. "Does anyone volunteer, this poor little girl has been in a cabinet this entire time. You think you had it bad, well now we all do. We're not savages people, we were all civilized human beings 24 hours ago."

"It's not about being a decent human being," Buck fumed. "There is a virus down there turning people into creatures! What if it's airborne and you all bring it back up here? The fog came for a reason. It brought the virus."

"I was trapped outside on the balcony when the fog came," Dallen assured the man. "I've breathed it in, and I'm fine. As long as I'm fine, I'm going to try to get that little girl. Will any of you help us?"

They looked around the room, it quickly turned eerily quiet.

After eating, everyone was called together for an update. Everyone gathered around to hear what the security guard had to say with hopeful faces that they would be let out. The new grim, it wasn't long before they all began bickering. Tyler shouted along side them even though what he was yelling didn't exactly make sense to Elizabeth; she didn't see how opening the gates to let them out would help anyone. Not when there was a bigger threat on the first floor to deal with first.

Glaring in the security guard's direction as he spoke, it felt like he was undermining exactly what she'd been through down stairs in the lobby. Bristling as she clinched her fist and took a step forward, it was the touch of Ava's hand gently touching her arm that kept her held back. Gritting her teeth she remained quiet, but she didn't think the people up here could compare with what any of them had seen downstairs. It just wasn't the same. Those screams and the vivid images of all those people dying would forever haunt her nightmares for the rest of her days.

That didn't mean that she wasn't in support of saving a little girl. In fact, it made her want to help even more. No child should be stranded down there and had she known about it then she might have died trying to get to her yesterday. Maybe it was because she was a mother herself, even if her son lived with his father, but she could feel her maternal instincts tugging at the thought of a child in danger.

Everyone had fallen quiet as they looked around at each other. No one was willing to risk it. “Seriously?” she demanded, looking around the room at each of the faces in disbelief. “There's a little girl down there and you all would rather let her die?” It hadn't even been a day and these people were ready to start throwing one another to the wolves already.

Taking another step forward out of Ava's reach, Elizabeth went to stand beside Dallen. “I'll go,” she volunteered. She wasn't going to be a coward.

“Wait,” Ava said quickly before turning to Tyler.

The two of them spoke to each other in hushed voices. He looked upset about something and even mad. Wondering what his problem was, she found out when he flatly stated, “We'll help, too.” It was obvious that he didn't want to go, but she'd somehow talked him into it. And since it didn't look like anyone else was stepping in, they needed all of the help they could get.

The only three people to survive the first floor massacre were the only ones willing to go back. It immediately said something about each of their character to Dallen, as he gave a nod for the help. The five of them went back to the armory, each getting a weapon and a short tutorial on how to use them. Or rather, how not to shoot yourself.

"Do not! I repeat, DO NOT shoot me!!" Briggs told them all as distinctly as he could. "Only fire at the dead!! We don't even know if they can be killed yet!"

"That's first," Dallen said. "We lure one into the staircase with us, then we figure out if we can kill it." He already hated referring to the dead walkers as 'it', but they definitely weren't human anymore.

"And if we can't kill it..." Briggs took over. "...we run back to you. You are our back-up. Don't kill us, please!"

Once the group all had their weapons ready, they were granted access through the stairwell, all of them taking their own pace as they descended further down the building and closer to what could easily be all of their deaths. Other than each of their voices, it was dead silent going down the dark stairs.

Briggs led the way down, he kept a slow pace and held an automatic shotgun before him. A flashlight was attached at the end of the weapon, showing the way forward for all of them. He was a silent and loyal man, though has been referred to as a teddy bear to those closest to him. His mind was focused on the task before them, but he couldn't help the thoughts of his family that kept pouring into his mind. So many people were dead, he knew he had to keep his mind sharp and his eyes trained.

Dallen trailed behind him, he took a belt holster and equipped it with a glock 43. In his hand he carried a security baton that extended, while he also took a tactical knife that was stuck on the other end of his belt. He walked nearest to Elizabeth.

"Thank you," he said to her, but really meant that to all of them. He didn't know the little girl he was going to try to help, but it gave him some hope that others out there would help a little girl that was trapped no matter what. He hoped someone was helping his daughter, that she was safe somewhere. "To escape yesterday and volunteer to go back to help someone else, it says a lot. I apparently misjudged you. I thought you were just a wild, drunk party girl." He had dealt with very similar dui cases in the past, and couldn't help his judgements. He spoke plainly because things were different now. "Nice to know which of us has a backbone."

Escorted to the back, Elizabeth and the others were handed a gun. Ava took her new weapon carefully while Tyler greedily grabbed his and grasped it tightly. Frowning as she was handed a weapon of her own, Elizabeth ignored the brief tutorial they were being given as she already knew how. Her ex knew his artillery well and though she'd never been interested in it herself, she could have listened to his accent all day. He was the one who'd taught her how to use a gun in case she ever needed to defend herself.

Skillfully she performed a press check to see if there was a round in the chamber. As the man practically begged them not to shoot him, she glanced over and arched a brow in his direction. She didn't think even Tyler was that incompetent, but hell. She'd been wrong in her life before.

When they were all ready they made their decent to the first floor. Tyler was shaking in his loafers, hissing at Ava the whole time that he couldn't believe she'd talked him in to it. Every sound from a creaking pipe to even their own footsteps echoing in the stairwell, he asked, “What's that?”

Elizabeth moved slowly, her heels clacking against the concrete steps. Dallen was the closest to her, so when he spoke she glanced over at him. At first she thought he was talking to all of them. Remaining quiet as she figured Ava would probably be a better person to speak for their little rag-tag team, it wasn't until he specifically mentioned that he'd misjudged her that she realized he was talking directly to her.

She might have been a lot of things—a wild, drunk party girl among them—but that didn't necessarily equate to her being a terrible person. Eying him curiously wondering why he brought it up now or what it had anything to do with anything, she found she didn't know what to say to the older lawyer. “Does that mean my case is pro bono?” she asked. When they made it out she still had obligations to take care of.

The sudden sound of gunfire going off made her jump and shriek. “I'm sorry!” Tyler yelled, holding the weapon an arm's length away from him. “I thought I saw something-” Even Ava was rattled as she leaned against the railing with her hand over her chest. Someone as fidgety as Tyler probably didn't need a gun.

“Someone take it from him,” she snapped, eying Briggs in particular since he was the one to hand out the weapons to them in the first place. The man didn't seem to mind that his weapon was being confiscated as it meant he got to hang back where it was safe and let the others do all the work.

Briggs snatched the sidearm from Tyler, an agitated look on his face.  "The hell's wrong with you?"  He holstered the weapon and ordered everyone to wait in place.  When no sounds were heard back, he continued on down the steps.

Dallen turned his attention once again to Elizabeth.  "Sure," he told her.  "It's on me."

"You, trigger-happy, you get to hold this door open," Briggs said to Tyler when they passed the doors.  "Think you can handle that one?"
The rest of them headed lower until they reached the ground level.  The groans of the dead could now faintly be heard on the other side of the steel door.  This door was being controlled by Steven, up in the security room.  The security camera moved to look at them all, indicating that he was watching.

"How's it look?" Briggs asked into a handheld radio.

"-There's only two by the door right now- they aren't aware-"

Briggs gave a confirmation nod to the camera.  "Ladies, stay back and be ready for anything.  Open the door Steven!"

The green light blinked on, turning the door unlocked and also quickly getting the attention of the two dead ones from the other side.  Briggs opened the door while Dallen stood in view.  The infected came forward, still resembling the human it was before.  Its eyes were pale and blood trickled down its mouth as it lunged.

Dallen backed in further to bring it inside the stairwell.  It worked, but as soon as it entered and Briggs tried to close the door, the other one was already slammed up against the other side.  With it came more, and soon Briggs found himself dropping his weapons to put all his strength into keeping them from barging in.

Dallen twisted the walker's arm behind its back, then kicked in its knee to bring it down and somewhat in control.  With his free hand, he continuously started stabbing the thing with his tactical knife all throughout its left body side.  As more blood spilled out, he lost control.  The walker wasn't even slightly fazed by the knife, as it found itself on top of Dallen, trying desperately to eat his face.  The creature was kept at bay with his bent legs between them, and his left hand holding onto its throat.

"Lock it!" Briggs yelled when the door finally shut.  The door turned locked, as Briggs ran over and grabbed the walker off of Dallen.  He lifted the thing up, then tossed it hard into the wall.  Dallen rolled over and stuck the knife deep into the walker's forehead.  It stopped moving entirely.

Dallen got up, lighting a cigarette in the process.  "So they can die, again," he said.  "Get 'em in the head."

"Time for the distraction," Briggs said in the radio.
On the other side of the door, the elevator started working once again via Steven up in the security room.  He brought it down to ground floor and opened it.  Inside was a strobe light, and next to that was a boom box that was kept for entertaining the long hours of the job, and within it a cassette tape played Ted Nugent's

The horde within moved toward the sounds of the rock music blaring loudly as if it were a live show.  The entire room cleared as they all huddled around the elevator entrance, focused blindly on the distraction.

"You hold this door open for us, the security system might not be fast enough," Briggs said to Ava, giving this task to her as Steven unlocked the doors again.

"-It worked!-" Steven confirmed through the radio.  "-go now!-"

Briggs led the way into the room with his shotgun at the front.  Dallen and Elizabeth trailed behind, all of them immediately being struck with the smell of flesh and death.  The room was a massacre, with body parts lying everywhere.  Some were infected even with having half eaten torsos.  A few crawled without legs, while the rest staggered and huddled together.  The music wouldn't prove to be much of a distraction, though, as the infected quickly found themselves bored from it.  They slowly started to turn back to fill the room again.
Dallen waved for Elizabeth to get low, as they crawled from behind the desks to avoid eye contact.  The cabinet with the little girl still inside was at the far end of the room, but was completely clear of the dead for now.  Briggs leaned in next to Elizabeth, whispering to her, "We stay and cover.  Faster if he goes alone."

Dallen moved quick, slipping and sliding across the floor until he reached the cabinet.  He pulled it open to see the girl inside, a few years younger than his daughter.  She was Asian, scared, and in tears when she saw Dallen.  "It's okay..."
She screamed at the top of her lungs, the pitch of it even surpassing the noise of the music in the background.  Many walkers turned toward them, and after a few snarls, they moved in.

"Here they come!!" Briggs yelled, coming out of cover to blast a walker's face off.  He took the heads off of two more, as Dallen forcefully pulled the little girl out from the cabinet.  He had no time to think, as a walker jumped at him and he lost the grip on the girl.  As she ran off, Dallen fell to the floor.  He quickly unholstered his firearm and shot the thing in the brain, causing the corpse to fall on top of him.  He fired a few more clean shots from the ground, nicking off headshot after headshot.  They all fell on top of Dallen, nearly covering him whole.

"Get the girl," Briggs told Elizabeth.  Dallen was already lost to him, so instead he moved to clear the path.  He took down a few more walkers while reloading shells into his shotgun back to back.  "We need to leave!"

As more of the dead started coming toward them, Briggs began to back up and head back the way they came.

Once Tyler had been dealt with, Elizabeth glanced back over at Dallen. Not expecting that response for him, she considered maybe she'd misjudged him as being nothing more than a heartless, money-grabbing lawyer. A small smile tugged at the corner of her mouth, but she didn't say anything more as they'd finally reached their destination.

Giving a snort at Briggs' command as he called out the ladies, she couldn't resist making a snide remark towards Tyler. “That means you,” she told him as she moved past him and defiantly kept towards the front lines. While he retorted by making a face at her, he didn't argue as he and Ava lingered behind the others until they were otherwise told to do something.

With Briggs busy trying to keep out the unwanted as they tried to barge through the door and Dallen dancing with the other one that wandered in, it was left up to her to handle the second one.

Unprepared to shoot at something living—or were they dead? She didn't know what they were now, but she found herself reluctant to kill it again as moved towards her. “What are you waiting for? Kill it!” Tyler yelled as he huddled together with Ava.

Firing one of the bullets, it hit in the chest. Blood slowly seeped from the wound, but it proceeded forward. Panic rising in her as she fired a couple more shot into its torso, she was low on ammo when she switched her method and aimed for the head. It fell instantly to the ground right before Dallen stated what she'd just found out. Unable to shake off the feeling that they were being condescending because she was a woman, she glanced over at Ava to see if it was just her. The woman was too busy trying to calm down a frantic Tyler.

Once the distraction was lowered and everyone inside the room shifted away from the doors, it was time to go in. Ava hurried over to hold them open for a quick getaway while the others made their way inside. Tyler lingered behind having climbed to the top of the steps, peering down at them from above like an overlord and warning them to be careful.

Following the others into the lobby, Elizabeth stopped halfway from the stairwell to the desks that the others had hidden behind and froze. As she looked around the room at the blood slick across the marble floors and all over the windows, she could hear the agonizing screams of the people from the day before. She remembered how they'd desperately crawled over one another looking for some kind of escape after they'd all been trapped.

Spotting Dallen waving to her, she pulled herself out of her thoughts before rushing over to hide behind the desk. Looking around, she noticed she was in the exact same spot she'd been in the day before. While she thought she would be capable of doing this, now that she was actually there she found it harder than she'd thought. People were dead. The person in the stairwell...had there been any hope for them? Had she killed them when they could have been saved? Her hands began to shake.

Everything that happened next seemed to play out in slow motion. Dallen getting to the girl, the scream, those things converging and swarming on top of him. Briggs' voice barely managed to cut through to her, but when it did she took off running after the little girl.

When she caught up with her she scooped her in her arms, the girl crying and thrashing against her in an attempt to escape. Unable to comfort her at the moment, Elizabeth had to run with her fighting the entire time until she reached the safety of the stairwell.

Kneeling down on her knees in front of her, she tried to console her. “Shh, shh,” she soothed, doing her best to keep her voice calm even though it wavered slightly. The little girl looked at her and Elizabeth could see the fear in her eyes. “You're okay. You're okay.” Her eyes examined her for any cuts and bruises.

The last thing she expected was for the little girl to throw her arms around her and hug her. Taken by surprise, Elizabeth remained still before she wrapped an arm around her to return it. “You're safe now,” she assured her as they waited for the others.

"We got the girl, Dallen's dead," Briggs confirmed into the radio. "Heading back up to you now..."

"-Dallen's alive, he's...killing them-" Steven said back, he was 35 floors above them watching their every move on the security monitors.

"What are his chances?" Briggs asked, a confused look on his face.

"-...He's killing all of them...-"

"Open the door!"

...

Dallen crawled his way out from under the dead bodies, pushing each one aside until he was finally free. As he stood, he noticed none of the undead paid any attention to him. He was covered, suit and tie and all, from head to toe in blood and guts. The scent blended him in with the walkers, allowing him to sneak up behind each one and stab them in the brain.

Briggs came back into the room that just moments ago was seemingly lost. He blew the heads off of a few more walkers, until finally they were all dead. The room was clear.

"Thought you were dead," Briggs said to Dallen, a smirk on his face.

"This hides our scent," Dallen said seriously about his blood and guts camo, not even contemplating the thought of actually being torn apart. Everything happened so fast, he didn't have time to think about any of it. "We can now leave this place, when we need to. The building is ours again."

Steven wasted no time. He quickly switched the comms on and told everyone through the loudspeaker the good news. "We have the building back," he spoke. "I repeat, the building is ours!"

While the many people on the 32nd through the 34th floors celebrated the news, it was time they all had to make a choice. Over the course of the day and night, it was known to everyone that in the morning a split would occur. Judge Williams had deemed this building to be her new home, and most everyone else agreed. Here, they all figured they might last for a long time, scavenging outside when needed. This was to be their base. The few that decided to leave, they would get their chance. The gates would be open for them, and they would be allowed to return with their loved ones if they could. They all had until the next morning after that, 24 hours to return. After that mercy, the Judge stating the doors would be closed for good no matter what. All reserved supplies would be for the people of the court house.

The lawyer cleaned himself up the best he could in a washroom, luckily having the luxury of a shower via the basement generators. He obtained a new suit and tie as well, as many lawyers used to change and leave their belongings stored away. His new suit was all black.

"Dallen, you know what it's like out there," Lucy told him. "I want to find Kelsey too, but it's too dangerous. We need you here, you've already proven your worth to these people."

"You're telling me to abandon my daughter?" was the reply.

"No...it's...we need to think about our own survival now," she said. "Everything changes now."

"You do that, I'm going to find my little girl."

Day 3 10:00 am: Departure

Those who would be allowed to leave all met in the elevator, after saying their farewells. Riley escorted him out down through the hallway, reminding him that he had exactly 24 ours from now to find her and bring her back. With a pat on the back, he entered the lift and they parted ways. The elevator lowered down to the lower floors, stopping to pick up all of those who would also leave.

In the meanwhile, jobs were already given to the people by the third day. Everyone seemed to be on board with each other for the most part, and so those staying here all took part in the various tasks. From the storage of goods, ammo, and foods, to the fortification of the building, the SOS signs painted up on the roof, and other various jobs.

It all had a promise to it, which was why Dallen planned on coming back. The only reason to leave this safe haven, he thought, would be if the military started bombing them. Which was a real possibility, but with the fleeing of all the helicopters from the area, it felt moreso as if this city had been abandoned to its fate.

It amazed her to see how quickly most of the people in the building had given up. Thinking that as soon as the doors would open the majority of them would flock back to their families, she was shocked that more than a few—even the ones that had been protesting—had elected to stay inside, afraid of stepping foot past the doors in the lobby.

Elizabeth was not one of them. She needed to leave. She needed to find some way to check on her son. Ava was another one choosing to leave, the woman having her own family to get back to. The one person that probably surprised her was Tyler. Thinking that maybe he would be too scared, she was shocked when he stated he wasn't going to be locked in again and was getting out while he could. Even though he didn't have family to get back to—and Elizabeth doubted he had any friends, either—the bachelor would have rather taken his chances locked in his own apartment.

The most controversial decision, however, was the little girl. After being saved, she'd stuck close to Elizabeth and the others like glue and when it came time for everyone to figure out what they were doing, once they made their choice she piped up, “I'm going, too.”

It created more chaos as people claimed it was too dangerous for her to go out there. The adults intimidated her as they hovered over her saying, “Oh, no. It's too dangerous for you. You need to stay here.”

But Elizabeth noticed that she as a strong little girl. Whenever she felt scared or overwhelmed, she reached out to hold her hand, but she stayed steadfast in her decision. “No. I need to find my daddy,” she told them all. The firm tone sounded odd in her sweet high-pitched voice.

Knowing that she'd just lost her mother, she could understand why she'd want to leave and find the only other parent she had left. As everyone argued over what should be done, Elizabeth said, “I'll make sure she finds her father.” Happy to find someone on her side, the little girl hugged her leg.

Those leaving all gathering at the elevator, they were given a brown paper bag with 24 hours worth of rations. They were allowed to come back within 24-hours if they changed their minds, but the Judge made it clear no one would be allowed entry after that point. Not planning to come back, it wasn't wasn't an issue for Elizabeth though Tyler looked as though he had doubts before getting on the elevator.

Out of all of them, Erin, the little girl looked the happiest. She stood beside Elizabeth, her hand in one hand and the brown paper bag in the other one. “It reminds me of the lunches we had on our field trip to the orchard,” she said happily, tilting her head back to look up at her.

“Oh yeah?” Elizabeth asked, giving her all her attention. “Did you have fun?”

Scrunching her nose up, she shook her head as she remembered it. “Not really. It was just a bunch of trees and Billy Mitchell kept pulling my hair on the bus.”

When the elevator doors opened to let them out and they all stepped off, they said their goodbyes. Tyler was first with a heartfelt goodbye for Ava thanking her for all her help. Just when Elizabeth thought she might miss him a little bit he turned to her and said a curt, “Farewell, Lizzy. I hope to never see you again.”

Rolling her eyes as he walked away, her response was a little too late and she had to yell across the room, “Yeah, well, the feeling's mutual!” After she was done huffing, she turned to Ava to give her a hug and say goodbye. The woman bent down to give Erin one as well which she returned.

Once it felt like everyone was gone, she looked back at Erin who stared expectantly up at her with her big brown eyes. “Where do you think we might find your father?”

The girl perked up happily. “He's a teacher,” she responded excitedly. “He teaches older kids.”

“So a school,” she stated. Erin gave an eager nod. “Shouldn't be too hard.”

"Romero high school. Home of the Wildcats," Dallen stated. Where Dallen's daughter was, where Erin's father probably was. It was a destination, and it was all that Dallen was focused on at this point. He thought that it was foolish for the others to leave on their own, but luckily the undead in the area had dispersed. They all now knew these things could be killed and how to, and of the various things that distract them, but they were still fast and never tiring.

"I'm heading that way," Dallen said. He lit up a cigarette and started walking.

There were enormous skyscrapers surrounding them, shadowing the entire city within a few miles. The middle school was a few blocks left off of mainstreet, which was entirely possible to reach and get back to the court house building in 24 hours. So long as the dead was in hiding, they might even be able to find a few more survivors, if there were any.

It wasn't long before they heard a scream. Just a block away, they met Ava once again. She locked herself in a random Ford Taurus while a walker scratched at the window from the outside. With a sigh, Dallen approached and killed the thing, using his knife and sticking it through the back of its' head.

"That didn't take long," he said as he freed her from her own cell.

"Guys..." Erin calmly said, her voice faint.

"Sorry, I should've been more careful," she said, taking a quick second to recollect herself. "It just, came at me so fast."

"We should stay together this time," Dallen said. "Help me get my daughter back, and I will help you find whoever you need to find."

"...guys!"

Before Ava could nod her head in agreement, Erin spotted a few of the undead turning the corner. Behind them, a horde. They were roaming through the city at random, some of their faces still fresh while others were covered in blood and gore. As the dead turned the corner, they spotted the group. One of them houled a blood curdling scream deep through the air and city, the message clear: Food.

"Run!" Dallen yelled. He led the way, taking the group through an alleyway and out the other side. They ran through some markets, then through a building, until they came out in town square. Dallen stopped dead in his tracks as he realized he had just led them all to their demise.

The undead were on both sides of them, and soon enough were at the front and back. There was a slight chance for an escape route, however Dallen thought about it too long and the chance was gone. The horde moved in, some running at them, others hobbling or crawling as fast as they could.

Dallen looked at Elizabeth with defeat in his eyes, realizing that this was the end. They were foolish to think they could make it out here, even for just 24 hours. There was no way his daughter had survived this, or anyone for that matter. They were all dead, or close to it. The dead and the dying.

"Look!" Erin said, pointing at the sewer entrance under the curb. It was small, but wide enough for them to slip through one by one. Wasting no time, Dallen ran up to it and stood guard. "Go!" he yelled. Ava joined him and the pair started firing at the oncoming horde.

Erin slipped through the sewer entrance with ease, though her landing on the other side wasn't perfect. She tripped and landed facefirst, scratching up her forearms and a bit of her chin. She ignored her own pain as she turned to help Elizabeth get down the sewer as well.

"Ava, your turn!" Dallen said, he ran out of ammo and tossed the gun. Using his knife, he killed another walker and pushed it aside. Ava was grabbed, she wrestled with the walker a bit, before shoving it off. Another was quickly on her, but before she was bit she still managed to free herself.

Dallen had a choice. Risk his life for Ava, or protect it by going to the sewers. There was only a moment's notice before they were completely surrounded on all sides, town square belonged to the dead. He leapt out of the way of an attack, almost fully sliding into the sewer grain. He pushed with everything he had until he was completely through, falling to the other side with the others.

"Elizabeth-" Ava said as she rushed to the sewer immediately after Dallen. She too made it, reaching her hands through for help as she tried desperately to force her way in. The dead were already on her from the other side, though, as they tore their fingers and teeth into her back. Her body covered the entire sewer entrance, blocking the dead from entering.

Erin watched in utter horror as the poor woman was screaming for her life right in front of them. Blood started pouring out of her mouth as her innerds were devoured. The walkers huddled around her corpse continuously ate and picked at her flesh, ripping it entirely from her back revealing her spine and organs. It was a painful and slow death, one that put Dallen almost into shock. It took him a few moments before he could regain control of himself again, and then he covered Erin's eyes.

"Keep moving," he told them. "Just keep moving."

Anyone who knew the area above like he did, knew which direction to take even underground. The pipes all lined parallel with the streets. He still led them to the high school, the three of them quiet as they moved on

Making their escape in the sewers, Elizabeth knelt down in front of Erin and tilted her head back to get a better look at the scrapes. “Does it hurt?” she asked her as she untucked a corner of her white blouse and used it to wipe the small amount of blood drawn away from her chin.

“I'm okay,” she said though each time Elizabeth touched her wounds the little girl winced from the burn. Not once did she complain though. She was one tough little girl and she hoped her son, while much younger, was fairing just as well right now as she was.

Looking up at the scene above them, her eyes widened when she saw Dallen jump down. “What are you doing?” she asked. “Ava's still up there!” Thinking that he would at least try to help her, she craned her neck back to see the poor woman just make it. Her name the last word from her lips as she called out for help when she was grabbed, there wasn't anything they could do now. It was the same agonizing, painful scream that she'd heard fill the lobby. Covering her mouth, she backed up until her back hit the wall. They all stood there in horror as the screams finally died down. Finally she was quiet, but her body still jerked as they continued to feed on her.

Only when Dallen told them to keep moving did she press on, lingering behind the two of them. “They ate Ava,” the little girl said, her voice shaking. She sounded on the verge of tears. “Just like the people in the lobby. Why are they eating each other?” Erin looked up at Dallen for some kind of answer. Hearing the distress in her voice snapped Elizabeth out of her trance and she picked up her pace to catch up with them. Seeing that she was with them now, the little girl turned to hug her for comfort. Elizabeth held her as she cried against her. “I want my daddy.”

Elizabeth could feel her chest tighten as Erin spoke; she felt for the little girl. “We're gonna look for your daddy,” she assured her, exchanging a glance with Dallen. After seeing what it was like up there, she was afraid of what they might find. While she was trying not to show it because she wanted to be strong for Erin, she was afraid, too.

The reassurance seeming to calm her down, Elizabeth pulled out of the hug as she looked down at the little girl. She wiped the tears away with her small hand. “I lost my bag,” she said with a frown. “I dropped it when we were climbing down here.”

“It's okay,” she said. “When it's time to eat, we'll find some food.” Erin nodded to show that she understood.

Breathing a shaky sigh, she looked to Dallen. “You know where we're going, Mr. Larson?”
