Heroes of Yore

It is in times of need that heroes are born. What need have we of them when there is no danger, no threat, no evil; to confront? And so we revere the heroes of the past, having none among us who fit that same romantic image of one figure standing against an encroaching darkness. No revolutionary, fighting to uplift their people out from a demon's shadow. No Arthurs, no Joan of Arks, no Hercules.

But now is a time when such heroes must return, for we have need of them. Dark and shadowy creatures, numerous and various in their shape and size, roam the land having poured out of the little wilderness still left on the Earth. With no opposition they overran most of our towns and cities, flinching little when faced with modern weaponry. Organised armies, trained to fight against their fellow humans, scattered to the wind in fear as their weapons did nothing to slow the onslaught; tanks ripped apart or crushed by the largest of the creatures while the small feral ones hunted down the skirmishing infantry. Aircraft strafed the enemy horde to no avail until they were forced to return home, having accomplished nothing, or else were plucked from the sky when straying too close to a giant.

Humanity has retreated to its final bastions, its greatest cities, and there built walls that put all former defences to shame in both scale and complexity. There, they have explored their final hope, a return of heroes to our land. Not the heroes of today but the heroes of yore, reborn in avatars possessing their power and their tenacity, who will lead humanity in their struggle against complete annihilation.

A year has passed and an uneasy status quo has taken root, the creatures roam the world at will and the only safe methods of transport are by sea and air. The military has been reformed, the former soldiers now acting as policing forces, with the task of the army now to protect against the creatures. Some attempts at pushing them back were made but failed disastrously, with catastrophic casualties for precious little gain.

You are a citizen of Carcassonne in South-West France, a city that still possessed medieval walls and managed to survive the initial wave of attacks. Whether you were from the region before, a tourist at the time or a refugee who had managed to find safety within the city walls, it no longer matters.

The city is under attack, the creatures are inside the walls and chaos reigns. In these moments, with your life reaching its certain end, you hear someone reach out to you, promising you the strength to make it through if you have the courage to fight. Dead soldiers, having given their life to protect the city, lie nearby and you find a weapon amongst the corpses.

You can fight. You must, to survive.

I believe the above sets the scene fairly well - capital cities are pretty much the only places left that humanity resides in, at least in any great number, with small fortified towns elsewhere but these are very few in number and have largely been occupied for their strategic worth more than anything else.

Little is still known about the creatures which have, more or less, made humanity extinct and now roam in giant hordes freely across most of the world's landmass. They vary little from continent to continent in general although there is great variation within the hordes themselves. From horse sized, feral and agile beasts to giants that tower over even four or five storey buildings, the creatures have different 'personalities' but act as one army, intent on crushing any enemies that appear before them.

Modern weaponry has shown little to no effect, at best slowing the creatures down but never successfully killing them. Only with handheld weaponry, from lucky wielders of kitchen knives, to hardy men and women improvising with large poles or pieces of timber, to purpose made bayonets, swords and spears; can these creatures be successfully killed. More primitive ranged weaponry, such as throwing spears/axes, bows and crossbows have more effect than modern weaponry but in the hands of a normal human, are largely ineffective. Armies have adapted, shunning modern weaponry (except in the case of policing) to adopting older and more conventional arms but they are inexperienced and lack the lifelong training that warriors from the past would have possessed.

This is where our heroes step in. Born as normal humans, and living as normal humans, they will be faced with a life or death scenario (the creatures, in other words) and become an avatar for a long dead hero. Their powers may not be the exact same as the hero by whom they now have an affinity to but they will wield a similar weapon (if one is available) and their individual ability and specialities will come from that hero's legend.

When I use the term 'power' I don't mean that these characters will be performing laser shows, causing earthquakes or creating spontaneous tsunamis. These abilities will be weapon focused and based - for example legends around the Gáe Bulg wielded by Cúchulainn could bring about different abilities, from a spear which is simply forever sharp and causes more damage than would normally be expected to spreading barbs throughout an enemy and literally shredding them from the inside.

Your character will have a 'life flashes before their eyes' moment into which this past hero will step in and awaken their abilities, including the granting of a weapon where applicable (almost always applicable, or else your character would still die).

Despite this awakening of heroes, they are still not numerous enough to form an army on their own as there is never more than one avatar of a particular hero at any one time, and so humanity is stuck in maintaining the current status quo. Beats total extinction though.

The story is split into some distinct phases although they will change based on how we play so I haven't made specific chapters up. As we progress we will find out about the nature of the creatures, the return of past heroes and what is actually going on.

Rules

The usual. Follow RPG standard rules, listen to me and respect your fellow roleplayers. This is a RP which is heavily plot based with a planned direction - I am flexible but I will be leading the plot.

In terms of posting frequency/order I'm not too strict about this - the best rule I've come across is that, by and large, you can post once for every time I post. Try not to block other people and if you're going to be inactive then please let me/us know via PM/OOC. As a general rule, once a week for posts is a minimum for me, I would prefer people to be more active but I appreciate that sometimes that's just not possible.

As always, please post your sheet into the OOC for approval, I'll then give the go ahead to post into the Character tab. Any questions then ask them here in the thread if they're general questions about the RP - anything specific to your character or a suggestion/query you want to pose to me then please PM me.

I got some ideas rolling. For heroic personas, thinking of doing Joan of Arc, Florence Nightingale, or Violette Szabo

Was thinking of either Odysseus or minamoto no tamemoto for their bow skills, or going either balyn or ashikaga yoshiteru for their sword skills.

Still trying to decide whether I'll have time for this or not. If I do I'll probably roll up a Lancelot inspired character. I'll keep you posted.

@GreenGoat

Dang! Were you typing in RPG or a word processor? It's been suggested to me that Google docs or a similar cloud based service is a good way to go (personally I just type it in OneNote or directly onto here though).

@Binary Reign@GreenGoat

Both look great!

I've added a few things I (stupidly) left out of the character sheet template above which shouldn't change anything drastically - just information about weapon of choice and any particular abilities they may get from their heroic persona.

Righteous, thanks! Quick questie on that bit there, for my guy. As far as weapon of choice goes, Ned Kelly is pretty much just known for his bare-fist brawling (and using guns, but those are obviously out of the question), would that be okay to go with for the weapon? My initial thought for power was just a massive boost to durability (because of good ol' Kelly's bulletproof armor), with a little bit of strength as well to support going mano-a-mano with monsters, what're your thoughts?

@Binary Reign

That's definitely in keeping with the idea. There will be plenty of heroes who fight merely with fists, improvised weapons or gauntlets etc.

@Binary Reign@GreenGoat

You're both free to post your sheets into the character tab, I'm accepting you now.

I don't plan to have a huge cast for this RP so I'm looking for a couple, maybe three, more sheets as a maximum before we start.

@Jinxer So its just a chainmail over gambeson, with bracers, greaves and helm, yeah? The armor for your char i mean. Seems fitting for a 12th century knight. Also this is unimportant, but I just like pointing out that she already have the strength required to wield any knight's gears if she's athletic. Their armaments and armor are hardly as heavy as some popular myths would suggest. But its not that important, as I mentioned. ^^;

Do I absolutely need something like super strength or any other sort of super ability? I noticed both you and Binary seemed to have those.

@GreenGoat

Yeah, not plate armour or anything since they'll be fighting on foot most of the time and I want her to be relatively mobile!

Not at all. I only gave her increased strength because she's small and light, more so than your character by a small stretch. A full length broadsword is a heavy weapon to wield one-hand, hence why I gave her that strength. It's not super human, just what one would expect from a medieval knight.

If a sword weights more than 3kg(6.6lbs), thats most likely a ceremonial piece than a battlefield iirc. The notion that a sword(as well as plate armor) is heavy to the point of being unwieldy is a popular myth propagated by movies and such. A zweihander, a two handed sword, would historically weight about 2-3 kg.
Longswords would be 1-2kg. Certainly not unuseable one handed by the average person ^^;

But Ill stop there before I go on full lecture mode lol. I have a tendency to blab on about topics I like. >.>;

@GreenGoat Good knowledge! Bear in mind that most of those weapons would be from horseback and a battle could be hours in length. Although not heavy in and of itself, a protracted battle would quickly exhaust someone without the requisite strength (especially when fighting beasts the size of a horse!)

Yeah. Anyone can wear and use them easily, but it still requires that extra training to fight as long and as effective as the knights did.

Fraid I'm gonna have to rescind my interest in this. Unfortunately I just don't think I'm going to have the time. Wish you all the best of luck though.
