Let's get to the pitch:
Imagine those old fashioned retro sci-fi imagery of like Star Trek, planetary romances, and all that bubble bowl raygun spacemen aesthetic of stories from the past. Now imagine if that world actually happened, got it good? Great now imagine the future sucks and mix it with the swagger and flavor of the 70's with all the urban decay and inner city problems as depicted by some Blaxploitation flicks.
Welcome to the to the future, or rather present in the year of 1x7x where man has managed to take to the stars with advanced technology and with it all the hopes of the future. And dropped it hard. Harder than playing hot potato with a live grenade. Even in space the ills of mankind never properly vanished and instead adapted themselves to the new environments of exotic planets and space stations. Now you got things like interstellar pimps in their modded space ships, densly packed decaying space station ghettos and the space station equivalent of urban decay and space hobos. On worlds things might be better but danger abounds with all sorts of weird aliens of varying degrees of ratchetness much less intelligence or good temperament.
Now where do you come in? The answer is simple you're some part of this motley crew aboard a cool looking yet rickety piece of shit spaceship dubbed the Excelsior. Whether alien or human, you're together in feeling the man's careless neglect induced oppression over your shoulders. What you do and how you do it is up in the air as you journey through the cosmos, but the important thing is you gotta do it in style.
Anyway welcome and thank you for reading the opening scrawl. [Needs title] is essentially as described above a whacky blending of all those retro sci-fi aesthetics and ideas mixed with a smattering blaxploitation. The game will be somewhat sandbox with the exception of missions that you, the crew may choose to accept or not. And in keeping with the mashup you'll get an interesting blend of the two aesthetics. Ruleswise I don't got anything to say but that I might be running this in an unorthodox manner in regards to two things; one being the way how I'll do character sheets and the other being how I handle fights.
Why the fights in particular? Mainly because the whole issue of the scripting if you will of them and the mess of autohits and dodges and how I don't care for it that much. With fights I'll be using this little thing called Wushu which is a free RPG system that's light and easy yet will serve to mediate conflicts in a non-partial and exciting way. An overview of the rules can be found here and I think they should be easy enough to understand. The implementation will be easy the usage even easier. Now I know you're concerned about dice but don't, there's two method for doing this and it involves one that gives me slight book keeping and one that doesn't. I'll leave which method is which up to you guys.
