It's 1000 years in the future.
In 2100, world war three devastated the world. Less than one percent of the population lived. Parapsychologists, and esoteric conditioning caused thousands, if not more of children to develop seemingly divine powers of their own. The devastation from nuclear war, biological warfare and the divine powers of the Holy Children nearly killed everyone.
In the Gathering, they made many oaths not to amaranth each other (more on that later). Or wipe out each other's worshipers. As the hapless Humans struggled to survive, the gods were culling each other in person to person fighting. For one hundred years the gods hunted each other down, only the most powerful openly ruled their own worshipers. This century was called the Shadow Age.
In 2250, various Humans began to rise up and cast off divinity to control their own destiny. Humans discovered incredible powers of sorcery and other forms of magic, shamanism, druidism and other forms of esoteric power that had nothing to do with gods. Some Beacons of Man, as these independent clans of Humans became known, rose up, surrounded in a sea of god ruled countries.
Count Salomet, the Antichrist, lurks in the shadows as a benevolent aristocrat, charitable, merciful and compassionate, it seems, until the time comes for him to strike, and commit ritual amaranth on all the gods.
What is amaranth? Amaranth is an evil act that drains a god of a portion of their soul. Surviving amaranth is seen as worse than rape or a brutal murder. It temporarily turns good deities evil, or at best, amoral. It transforms any victim, good or evil into horrifying mockeries of themselves, the only option that an amaranth god has to not be irreversibly transformed is self-imposed exile, until they are restored by The Universe.
Why would anyone commit amaranth? It transfers a portion of victim god's power to the eater. It is one of the few ways a mortal can become a deity. The most powerful mortal sorcerer in the world is on par with a god, but these sorcerers who become like gods are NPCs.
This game will be more like Fallout or perhaps the Ancient World in America. Guns, etcetera are still around, but a portion of a god's soul strength is used per turn, like Might is used in other Divinus role plays.
