“Once upon a time, we stood upon the precipice of human achievement. We didn’t just look to the stars– we conquered them. Human civilization spanned through the entire galaxy. Rumors have it that we were a hair-breadth away from discovering something big, something to take us outside the galaxy. But I digress, what’s lost is lost. What I can tell you though, is what’s happening now. The stars are foreign to us, and our old homes are gone. Even though we once at some point touched the stars, we were burned in the process.

Make no mistake: We are not winning. In fact, we once populated seven hundred forty-three star systems. Now, we only have one: The Old Solar System, Humanity’s original home. Ruins of the ancient world litter the nine planets, and the only thing we can do now is scavenge from them and beat the invaders back.

This is where you come into play, soldier. Currently, we are planning the largest counter-offensive in Human history. Forty-four billion people are left in the Solar System, and we are planning to mobilize every able-bodied man and woman willing to fight for our survival. Now, will you fight for your place in the galaxy, or will you be wiped from the slate of history? Now is the time to decide. Find your local recruiter, and enlist in Humanity’s Army today!

RP Overview

This is a Sci-Fi military rp, emphasis on the Sci-fi part. The technology level is somewhere between Halo and Mass effect, with limited FTL travel. Basically, we have some marginally technologically advanced post-apocalyptic stuff to work with. So no lasers (For the Humans anyway). Despite this, I believe that this gives room for more creative technology rather than just having lazor beamz.

The 18+ tag is meant mostly for blood, gore, and stuff like that. While romance is okay, and maybe encouraged due to the relationships and bonds that form during times of hardship, keep away from the graphic stuff within that category.

Again, the year is 3029, and Humanity has been forced out of their golden age. In fact, they’ve been forced almost a thousand years into the past, when they were just a primitive civilization first reaching out into the stars. The Bulwark, a conglomeration of allied alien races, is trying to wipe out Humanity for unknown reasons.

The setting of the RP is, of course, the Solar System. From the frontier of the Oort cloud to the Maginot Stronghold on Earth, calls come in from everywhere between, whether it be rebels, cultists, splinter groups, or the Bulwark.

Now, enough with the exposition. Who will YOU be roleplaying as? Well, you’re a grunt in the army’s 11 billion. To Humanity, you are a faceless soldier ready to fight and die for an inch of land. With that in mind, your characters of course will be different, the ones who are fated to jump from the crap to the cream. To start off, you will be a part of the 588th Defensive Army, stationed on the front lines of the Kuiper belt. Eventually, you will make it up the ranks, and gain access to more advanced technology in order to fend off Humanity's greatest threat.

As the GM, I'm refraining from trying to push the RP in a particular direction. Mostly, I'll set up exposition, write the results of the players' actions, and control NPC's. Just as this RP was a product of sudden passion while watching sci-fi video game trailers, I want to keep an element of spontaneity, giving players nearly complete narrative freedom while also throwing a few twists and surprises here and there. For example, you don't have to fight against the Bulwark; you can defect to them, betraying your fellow players (without killing them) or join a splinter/rebel group and fight against Humanity's interests. Or you can try to uncover the secrets of the Celestials, or try and rediscover Pre-Fall technology. Really, it's all up to you. In doing this, I hope to reduce burnout by having players often be in new situations. Also, for now, I'm going to keep the RP full and let the people from the interest check get the reins first, and as the RP goes on, I might be able to handle more players.

Alien Species of the Bulwark

The following are code names given to a number of alien races that make up the Bulwark. The actual names of these races are not known, as their languages are nearly indecipherable by current technology. More species are being discovered as the war goes on.

The Argon

A technologically advanced species whose home planet originates from the Sigma Sagittarii star system. Other than that, their history is shrouded in mystery. Makes up a significant portion of the Bulwark infantry, and typically, one of their soldiers is about equal to five of ours. On average, they are between 2-3 meters tall.

The Brumak

A species of giant stone-like organisms. Originating from the surface of Sirius B, they average five to seven meters tall. Typically outfitted as frontline breakthrough units or siege units. Use heavy weapons against them.

Human-2

A species of disturbingly similar organisms to Humans, at least in the physical aspect. Originating from Kepler 438b, they are used as infiltrators, and are nearly indistinguishable from normal Humans. Psychologically, they are different than Humans only in the way that they feel and act towards subjects relating to the Bulwark.

Griks

Cannon fodder for the Bulwark, these are pale, dull creatures of unknown origin to be used as meat shields. However, do not underestimate them, as they rush out into battle with a disturbing ferocity, gladly laying down their lives for the goals of the Bulwark, and have the physical strength of a fully grown ape. For some reason, if one gets close enough to a Grik, they can sometimes smell the faint aroma of banana bread.

Wisserams

Highly intelligent, frail creatures use their gangly arms to dissect our technology so that they can adapt to our strategy and tactics. If you see one, kill it and retrieve its brain.

Celestial

Not clearly defined, there have been no recorded sightings of even a single one, though their effects on space can be observed. Possible examples include cosmic events such as black holes, white holes, quantum tunneling, and possibly even the creation of alternate universes. However, this is all theoretical and hardly confirmed. Do not engage.

Supreme Leader Malveil

Race: Human

Sex: Male

Character Trait: Born to Lead

Character Personality: Malveil is a beacon of inspiration for his troops, and Humanity in general. When he speaks, everyone listens. A pragmatic and practical leader, he has no qualms with sacrificing a platoon of soldiers to earn an inch of land. No one dares face his wrath, as he will destroy all who stand in the way of Humanity.

Character Background: Malveil is one of the few witnesses of the Fall, and still clearly remembers life on his home planet, Kepler-442b. Due to Pre-Fall medical technology, he has a much longer lifespan than to be expected from the average human. Despite his memories, he does not talk about the past often. His reasons for this are unknown. What is known however, is that he enlisted in the military in 2930 at the age of 51 and fought his way up the ranks until he eventually became the Supreme Leader of Humanity.

Curio: He keeps his family heirloom, a refurbished 1,500 year old dueling pistol (functional) with him at all times, and refuses to carry any other sidearm.

Intel Sergeant Barry Murphy

Age: 34

Race: Human

Sex: Male

Character Trait: Skeptical

Character Personality: Barry is tough, and skeptical of nearly everything, but knows that his personal biases and reservations must be set aside for the good of Humanity, no matter who or what troubles him. He has a fascination with history, mostly with the patterns of actions that people tend to follow throughout history, like a neverending loop.

Character Background: Barry Murphy comes from a family rich with military history. The most well-renowned of them served the former United States during the global conflict known as World War II, more than a millennium ago. The name of this soldier is lost to time, but it is said that he fended off an army by himself.

Curio: He has a certain poem recited in his head, a poem that tells the tale of a battle during World War II.

Linda “Dusk” Lee

Age: 27

Race: Human

Sex: Female

Character Trait: Cool-Headed

Character Personality: Linda is able to stay calm in the most chaotic and dangerous situations. Even if a bomb exploded nearby, she wouldn’t as much as flinch. She is able to harness this eerily calm and collected demeanor and use it to improve her marksmanship as a scout-sniper for the 588th Defensive army.

Character Background: Linda, or “Dusk”, as she prefers to be called, grew up in a small, icy town on Proxima Centauri b. Growing up, food was scarce due to the alien panic, and since more and more rations were being delivered to the Old Solar System, the people on Proxima Centauri b fought and killed each other over the scraps that were left. Dusk was the only one who could fend for her family, and she did so with deadly efficiency. Before the evacuation ships came to her planet, she had killed 37 people for their supplies. Now, she serves as a scout sniper for the 588th Defensive Army, Ghost Division.

Curio: Dusk carries with her a special round, a bullet that is rumored to have been passed down her family for generations. Of course, it cannot function inside a modern weapon.

NPC Jacob Hunter

Name: Jacob Thomas Hunter

Age: 22

Race: Human (Sol System A.K.A. the Old System)

Sex: Male

Character Trait: Quick to Act

Character Personality: Jacob is a hothead that lives for confrontation, whether on the battlefield or off it. He's incredibly argumentative and inflammatory for the sake of it, holding the staunch belief that if you can't stand up for your ideals you may as well back down. He has a strong sense of "family" and looks after those in his circle, though problems may arise when members of his unit aren't in his clique. His respect is earned by deed, not by words, and he carries himself the same. Jacob won't talk himself up or brag about things he hasn't done.

The young man fancies himself a hardass after his first fight with the Bulwark unscathed and attempts to assert himself when convenient. Mostly to the new recruits who can't tell the difference between a vet and a pretender yet. His competitive nature often gets the best of him and he finds himself in unspoken rivalries with any that display a modicum of skill, whether or not he can match them in this area.

Character Background: Jacob Hunter originates from Jupiter long after the terraforming but still maintains the "Jupiter Pride" of living in a harsher environment than others even if those days are long past. He was a competitive member of his school track team, competing in the 110m Hurdle event and making it to conference before his stint in public education ended. Jacob never really returned to those high-intensity days of struggle and strong camaraderie before the war was knocking on his doorstep. He had achieved a scholarship to Gallion State on a combination of need requirements and selective application before attending college full time.

When the war had reached him the college students, being young and impressionable and most likely fighting fit, were among the first hit among the drafts. Jacob's number came up and off he went to the 588th. Not that he minded. Jacob was of the mindset that he would be fine, and he was technically right. The fledgling soldier has been in a grand total of one other battle in which he was fortunate enough to not take grievous injury, and he's spent his time since asserting this and ensuring that others follow his lead since he must be doing something right.

Curio: A piece of scorched metal from an up-armored vehicle, a war trophy from Jacob's first real skirmish.

Appearance

Jacob has a youthful look about him with his young face and tawny complexion. He's 5'9" tall but a middle-of-the-road 162lbs. Fit but not stacked, Jacob relies more on his lanky frame to surmount obstacles than to power through them. The obstacle course is his domain. His hair is tidy yet still holding personality with an upswept cowlick of considerable length compared to most other soldiers, nearly enough to get chewed out for. His expressions is nearly always judging, watching, ticking off boxes on a mental checklist only known to himself. He tends to go out of his way to add extra little bits to his uniform that he finds to be "cool", such as knee pads because he can and not because they're necessary.

Weapon Specialist Yhorg Gatashnavik

Age: 29

Race: Human

Sex: Male

Character Trait: Weapon-Savant.

Character Personality: There does not exist a man more boisterous, more joviant, and more merry than Yhorg Gatashnavik. More than the life of the party, he is the party. Words such as “Proud” or “Mighty” do little in truly describing this Herculean character. Though he may seem to have a force-field composed of bluffs and boasts, he is a loyal friend and true comrade to whomever he believes has a sincere heart.

Character Background: Yhorg is proud of his Jupiterian heritage, and it also helped that his home planet was said to have been named after a mythological king of gods. Raised in a zealous military family, he was groomed to be a soldier from the day he could walk. Due to the higher than average gravity on Jupiter, he is able to lift the heaviest of weapons because of his brutal training. He knows nearly any weapon inside-out, and it is because of this savant-level attitude towards firearms he was given the role of “Weapons Specialist” rather than the role of an ordinary grunt.

Curio: He keeps a grenade on him, scored with tally marks, each one representing a battle he survived. Currently, there are nine.

Name: Captain Aileen Faraday

Age: 32

Race: Human (Mars-born, Martian Citizen)

Sex: Female

Character Trait: Tough-as-nails

Character Personality: Aileen could easily be seen as just another gung-ho “everything for humanity”-style human weapon. She could easily be seen as a stereotypical “drill sergeant.” If one takes the time to get close to Aileen, one could see that she’s a genuinely caring person who hides that facet of herself under a guise of gung-ho “let’s kick some alien ass”-style dialogue. She worries greatly over the safety of her soldiers, and when not in combat, can be friendly or open to them.

Character Background: Born and raised on Mars, Aileen was the daughter of a mechanic and a career soldier. She was conscripted at age seventeen, but would have volunteered soon after if she’d had the chance. Her unit was led by a sort of rising star within the military, Captain Thomas Dunn. In a war full of losses and delayed inevitability, Aileen’s unit did quite well for itself. Aileen, herself, proved to be an effective soldier and leader, and soon became one of Dunn’s most trusted subordinates.

Victories for humanity were few and far between, but Aileen and her comrades were very good at surviving battles, and killing a helluva lot of Bulwark before they left. This impressive track record came to a screeching halt when Aileen was twenty-one. A nameless battle, but one that took the lives of hundreds of thousands of soldiers, including all but three of Aileen’s unit, including herself. Of the three, one was missing in action and the other, Thomas Dunn, was badly wounded. Aileen was the only soldier to come out of that battle unscathed.

After Thomas essentially retired, Aileen was rapidly promoted and given new soldiers to command. She proved to be a capable leader, though one noted for being a hardass. Her soldiers often have conflicted feelings of hate, fear, and admiration for her. Recently, her unit was folded into the 558th Defensive Army, where she again met her former idol, Thomas Dunn. Much to her delight, she now outranked him. The two may disagree on methodology, but both are equally interested in keeping the soldiers of the 558th alive.

Curio: Aileen’s sidearm is outdated, a functionally deadly memento from when she first joined the military fifteen years ago.

Appearance: Aileen is surprisingly small, standing at 5’ 4” and weighing 123lbs. A lifetime of soldiering has made her lean and strong. Her hair is kept short, and reddish-brown. She has sharp features and sharper eyes.

NPC Síofra

Name: Síofra /pronounced SHEEF-ruh; meaning "fairy" or "changeling/ Full name [EXPUNGED]

Age: 36

Race: Human

Sex: Female

Character Trait: Awareness

Character Personality: A somewhat mysterious character, she reveals very little about herself. Usually reserved in social situations, hyper-aware, extremely observant and intuitive. An exceptionally good listener. People often tend to blurb their life stories to her without even realizing they're doing it. She has a way about her that draws you in and makes you trust her. Very smart and cunning, as she needs to be in her line of work.

In private, with the few people she trusts implicitly, she is very warm and open. She is extremely loyal to the people from her inner circle and will go through all hells to help them should they need it. She is genuinely a very caring person and will have a hard time distancing herself from people she is drawn to until the vetting process for potential candidates for her inner circle is complete.

Character Background: Almost all details about Síofra's early life are either classified, expunged from record or redacted beyond comprehension. The same thing can be said about her later life and exploits. Few people know her life story and even fewer are deemed worthy enough to learn of her life story. She is a ghost, a phantom. She is an infiltrator specialist from the 588th Defensive Army. Operating mostly from behind enemy lines. Gathering intel, sabotaging enemy tech, supply lines, disseminating disinformation about the human war efforts.

A member of their security squad from the 588th Defensive Army reported seeing the Wisseram retrieve something in the chaos. Agent [REDACTED] was dispatched to [REDACTED] for in-depth investigation of the scene of occurrence and in the hopes of catching the trail of the Wisseram and his grunts.

Name: Abraham von Grünigen

Character Trait: Mad Scientist

Character Personality: Abe is one screw loose away from being completely crazy. He is focused solely and entirely on recapturing humanity's pre-fall scientific achievements and technology. To that end he is prepared to do anything, be anything, become anything in order to achieve his goal. A genius in his own right he is difficult to handle. He thinks other people beneath him and will interact with them only if they serve him a specific purpose. His obsession with reacquiring the pre-fall tech and his preparedness to do anything to achieve that goal make him a gun powder keg ready to explode in any moment. He can be a quiet and withdrawn recluse in one moment or an all high and mighty genius scientist postulating theories in the next.

Character Background: Abe was born in one of the underwater cities of Europa, floating beneath its eternal ice crust. He grew up in a family of scientists generations back. So naturally there were often tails of the magnificence of humanity's pre-fall achievements in science and technology. But the tails always ended with the inevitable loss of all of it. The wondrous technology, the marvelous science. Everything! And humanity had lost it all and was now forced to live in squalor, stuffed back in it's own backwater solar system. Full of useless and unimaginative old human tech.

His parents quickly realized their son's intellect was at genius level and took steps to provide him with the best possible education. At the fragile age of fifteen Abe had a PhD in Quantum Physics and Quantum Engineering. And those were just the once he officially bother to achieve. His genius mind held knowledge about numerous other disciplines. Astrophysics, Engineering, Quantum Mechanics, Biology, Xenobiology, Chemistry to name just a few.

He decided early on to cooperate with the army, reasoning that through providing his mammoth brain to their cause, his goal of recapturing the pre-fall science and tech will be faster achieved via the extermination of the pest that the Bulwark were. Over the years he's helped the war effort with improvements in weaponry, prosthetics, network system security and hack-proofing and whatever else you might think of. He's made himself more or less indispensable so that the military will look away from some of his less humanitarian experiments and endeavors in pursuit of his goal.

He is also the thorn in the Supreme Leader Malveil's but, constantly pestering him for information. Demanding that he be made aware of any and all pre-fall knowledge. Even going so far as to use humanity's war efforts against the Bulwark as leverage, stating that by not disclosing this information Malveil is harming humanity's chances of winning the war. Not that he cares one iota about that. His one and only concern is, of course, to recapture that lost scientific magnificence.

Curio: Was the contractor for the tech, Mo and her dad were retrieving when they got ambushed.

Player Character Darius Hayes

Name: Darius Sebastian Hayes

Age: 28

Race: Human (Proxima Centari System)

Sex: Male

Character Trait: Tenacity

Character Personality: If Darius were to be summed up in a word, that word would be "driven". He's an incredibly motivated individual that strives to be his best and do his best, to be a morally upright person with no regrets with which to look back on. This makes him responsible and dependable, a notable high-achiever. Darius is a man that doesn't take shortcuts and won't allow himself to rest until all the work is done and all the preparations are finished. Of course, this makes him high-strung and feel incredibly guilty for failures outside of his control.

While this behavior is admirable he also expects the same behavior of those around him and won't tolerate laziness among his peers. This can make him seem serious and demanding, which is true, in his best moments he's quite conservative and doesn't quite cut loose like others of his age might. Also an incredible nag and a bit of an adult babysitter. Still, his loyalty and willingness to give 100% all day every day make him a valuable friend to turn to in need.

Character Background: Darius hails from Proxima Centari, his birth home before the war beat humanity back to Old System in his early teenage years. Despite his current demeanor, Darius was a hellion in his youth, sparked by the tension that the incoming threat of the Bulwark had on his family. He shaped up quickly around the end of highschool when he was arrested and charged for starting fights which put him on the straight and narrow.

Darius's life after that was fairly mundane. He went to the University of Patowomak, Concord County of Mars, where he earned a Bachelor's degree in Business Analytics and began work as a life insurance salesman. He married his college sweetheart, Victoria, and at the age of 25 they had their son Julius. With the Bulwark encroaching Darius became more and more patriotic with a new family to be responsible for and began preparing for enlistment by hitting the gym and getting his affairs in order. When he truly felt ready and the draft came up with his number on it, Darius volunteered instead. A symbolic gesture mostly, but an important one.

Curio: Darius continues to wear his wedding ring even in the midst of heated combat, a stark reminder of what he's fighting to protect.

Appearance

Darius Hayes is a larger gentleman, standing at a solid height of 6'1" and weighing 205lbs. His stocky frame is toned from his workup before volunteering with light brown skin. Not seeing his first battle yet, he is absent of scarring save for a large gash up his arm he received in a motor scooter accident as a teen. A tattoo of a skull is emblazoned across his forearm, a relic from his past as a rebel without a cause. Darius's hair is shaved down to a razor fade (by choice beforehand, not through processing) and would be an inky black if it were long enough to display itself prominently. He has a steely gaze and serious face much of the time.

I'm making certain assumptions here, let me know if I'm wrong. Also keeping the fluff bare-bones so that more may emerge in-character.

Character Trait: Technology Expert

Character Personality: While in public, he is usually reserved and quiet; while in private he can be outgoing and fun to those he considers family and friends. In combat, he is cold and ruthless to his enemies.

Character Background:
Born on Earth, Edward grew up with his parents in one of the few safe cities in the planet. His father was a former military captain who had to retire due to a leg injury, while his mother was a scientist, who specialized in technology; it's from her that Edward got the desire to learn about technology. After finishing high school, he went on to university where he earned his Bachelor's Degree in Computer Engineering, followed by his PhD. After finishing, instead of taking a job in this field, he decided to follow his father's steps and asked his father for training; thus when the draft came up, he volunteered, ready for what is coming.

He hates aliens in general but those that help humans he gives them the benefit of the doubt and if trustworthy, he will accept them.
He dreams of finding old human technology to help mankind return to it's former status.

Good question. No, independent nations do not exist anymore. Instead, planets are essentially the new "nation", with large cities and districts that span hundreds of miles of land.

Character Personality: Jacob is a hothead that lives for confrontation, whether on the battlefield or off it. He's incredibly argumentative and inflammatory for the sake of it, holding the staunch belief that if you can't stand up for your ideals you may as well back down. He has a strong sense of "family" and looks after those in his circle, though problems may arise when members of his unit aren't in his clique. His respect is earned by deed, not by words, and he carries himself the same. Jacob won't talk himself up or brag about things he hasn't done.

The young man fancies himself a hardass after his first fight with the Bulwark unscathed and attempts to assert himself when convenient. Mostly to the new recruits who can't tell the difference between a vet and a pretender yet. His competitive nature often gets the best of him and he finds himself in unspoken rivalries with any that display a modicum of skill, whether or not he can match them in this area.

Character Background: Jacob Hunter originates from Jupiter long after the terraforming but still maintains the "Jupiter Pride" of living in a harsher environment than others even if those days are long past. He was a competitive member of his school track team, competing in the 110m Hurdle event and making it to conference before his stint in public education ended. Jacob never really returned to those high-intensity days of struggle and strong camaraderie before the war was knocking on his doorstep. He had achieved a scholarship to Gallion State on a combination of need requirements and selective application before attending college full time.

When the war had reached him the college students, being young and impressionable and most likely fighting fit, were among the first hit among the drafts. Jacob's number came up and off he went to the 588th. Not that he minded. Jacob was of the mindset that he would be fine, and he was technically right. The fledgling soldier has been in a grand total of one other battle in which he was fortunate enough to not take grievous injury, and he's spent his time since asserting this and ensuring that others follow his lead since he must be doing something right.

Curio: A piece of scorched metal from an up-armored vehicle, a war trophy from Jacob's first real skirmish.

Appearance

Jacob has a youthful look about him with his young face and tawny complexion. He's 5'9" tall but a middle-of-the-road 162lbs. Fit but not stacked, Jacob relies more on his lanky frame to surmount obstacles than to power through them. The obstacle course is his domain. His hair is tidy yet still holding personality with an upswept cowlick of considerable length compared to most other soldiers, nearly enough to get chewed out for. His expressions is nearly always judging, watching, ticking off boxes on a mental checklist only known to himself. He tends to go out of his way to add extra little bits to his uniform that he finds to be "cool", such as knee pads because he can and not because they're necessary.

Made a go at an NPC, hope he's aight. The Jupiter thing is kind of a stretch.

Declan MacCormac

Character Trait: Empathetic

Character Personality: Declan is principled, but deeply afraid of everything he stands against. He hates the aliens and wants to help humanity, but is terrified of their superior power. He hates the leaders and authority of Humanity, but he’s fearful of the same system that destroyed his parent’s rebellion. That being said, Declan is a genuine altruist. He may not care for the government, but he cares deeply about humanity as a whole and will confront a fear to help out a comrade.

He’s empathetic and sociable. A self-professed “scaredy-cat,” but not a coward.

Character Background: Declan’s father was from what used to be Scotland, and his mother from what used to be Ireland. He was born in what used to be the United States. Declan’s parents were both proud of their now-meaningless heritage. At a young age, he was sent to Luna to live with his uncle and aunt. He didn’t learn the reason until he was older. His parents were radical revolutionaries, and both were in prison, with his mother awaiting a death sentence. He changed his last name to avoid any stigma that might come from his semi-infamous parents.

So he grew up, disillusioned with United Humanity, and with a strong distrust of authority. Not that he did anything about it. Instead, he threw himself into his studies, and was in the beginning stages of a career in medicine when he was conscripted.

Curio: Declan carries around an ancient off-brand Zippo-style lighter, that’s still functional. His father was a heavy smoker, and this was his only inheritance.

Appearance: Declan is somewhat scrawny. 5’ 11”, but only 140 lbs. He’s lanky, gawky. His face is boyish, but his eyes are sharp. The very beginnings of a beard are on his chin. His hair is dark brown, medium-length, and perpetually messy. His eyes are pale green and observant. His shoulders are broad, in contrast to his lean frame. His skin is pale, but not abnormally so. He is entirely scar and tattoo free.

Great character building, post them in the character tab. Also, sorry that I didn't mention this before, but the NPC characters can die, though this does not mean that they will die. Although, if your do not want your character to die, pm me and tell me so that I can keep track of which ones can and can't die.
