The year is 2318.
Humanity has since moved on from its home-world and colonized the Milky Way from edge to edge. Tens of striving factions compete for territory and home-worlds from ancient, long dead civilizations known as Capital Worlds. Fortified with advanced military weaponry, these worlds are almost impregnable and serve as beacons of hope for any straggling faction. Not only that, long range scanners are unable to detect them for reasons yet explained. Pirates and multiple alien races also populate the galaxy, all fighting for total control of the Milky Way
That was until contact had been received by the outcast aliens. A small group had broken off of the main organization. They were calling themselves the Black Star Order. While non-threatening at first, their way of conduct was quite disconcerting. This specific group, had discovered a way to greatly accelerate the aging of stars. What was more frightening, was the fact that this group despised humanity and all it had done to stain the Milky Way. From what could be gathered, they were planning on razing every trace of humanity, by destroying every star system they inhabited. The message was broadcast to every faction, yet the governments decided to withhold the information if only momentarily. It was something to mull over thoroughly. They had no idea what weaponry this unknown race, or their fleet power. Where would they strike first? It had become a game of waiting. This is where the story begins, with word of this organization just reaching the factions. How will you affect the coming battle? Will you assist the Black Star and watch the Humans perish or will you fight alongside a faction to turn the tide? Only you will decide.
FACTIONS:
The local spur was overtaken by a more conservative group, holding extensive ties to their birth-place in the Local Cluster. Calling themselves the Democratic Anti-Expansion Regiment or the DAEXR, they entered a state of intense isolationism and refuse to admit almost all travelers to enter. Oddly enough, this has been a prosperous move on their part as their technology and economy thoroughly outweigh the other factions by a fair bit. Their ships are a rare sight and typically mean the battle or area is of high interest to the DAEXR. Stories have been told of the DAEXR defeating a platoon of frigates with only corvettes, striking fear in admirals.
Characters a part of the DAEXR would be incredibly reserved, silent and averse to speaking more than stoic pleasantries. Extremely advanced technology would be available to their disposal, which is up to the writer to decide.
The majority of the Perseus Arm is being held by the TLP, the Technology Liaison Party who have a history of scientific breakthroughs surpassing even the greatest minds of other factions. That being said, the TLP legally permits slave labour and prostitution, sometimes slave prostitution. Murder and crime is typically overlooked, resulting in a more Wild West sort of law. The government hardly cares about any actions the people commit but is incredibly restrictive in the operation of government personnel. Some members who apply are often never heard from again and fleeting reports state they become emotionless drones who; "Bark when asked." While emotionless, they are stunning in their intelligence. Their ships are found everywhere, mostly equipped with Research equipment in place of weapons. The TLP easily surpasses the DAEXR in scientific superiority. Oddly enough, the TLP prefer to hide their military fleets from other scouts to decrease the tactical awareness of other factions.
Characters a part of the TLP can be one of two ways, a government worker who is more an emotionless drone than a person and a civilian, who is completely open to do as they please. Options for renowned bandits or pirates are completely open. Remember that you would have extreme access to superior technology.
The Sagittarius arm is under control of a military junta which has recently began transposing parts and pieces of themselves for cybernetics and robotic implants. Formerly known as the PPP (Peoples Party of Protection), they have begun calling themselves SkiTTiSH (SymbIoIic TranS Humans or their full name; Symbiotic Trans-Human Coalition with Robotics) Even though they are under a typically oppressive military junta, the people have freedoms equivalent to early twenty-first century democracies. Even stranger yet, is the fact that they have taken it upon themselves to declare universal protection of every colonized planet. Their ships are bulky, heavily armoured and just as well protected. They can be found almost everywhere, acting as a front line for anyone who happens to invade. Rather than act under preference, they have declared to attack anyone who tries to attack a planet, yet will not retaliate against the attacker and will continue to protect them.
Members of the SkiTTiSH are uncannily friendly almost to an uncomfortable degree. Unabashed with really anything. Incredibly loyal, easy to speak to, emotional. If a scenario arises that requires someone to risk their life, someone from SkiTTiSH will voluntarily apply without hesitation. You have the option of Cybernetic anything up to near full-cyborg levels with justification and appropriate design.
The entire Norma Arm and sections of the Scutum-Crux arm have been labeled as a death zone. This is simply because it is constituted by lawless pirates and brigadeers. While occasional crime-hubs exist on planets, most planets are barren or uninhabited. Talk of an organized crime circuit have swirled around, with accounts of pirate admirals in control of Dreadnaught class capital ships taken over from various other factions. Even though the land is labeled as pirate territory, handfuls of settlers have meagered together colonies with help from SkiTTiSH.
This more or less free-roam for characters. While you have the option of installing cybernetics and claiming SkiTTiSH renegade, your technology is limited to standard as the TLP or DAEXR would never submit to piracy.
On the Scutum-Crux arm rests an alien faction called the Ferox which is mercantile in nature. Willing to trade in science, currency, ships and people, they offer mostly anything. They are the main source of luring vehicles for the Pirates in the nearby Norma arm, as well as decoy Faction ships scavenged and repaired to working order by the odd Alien race. They are more than willing to span out the entire galaxy as well, frequently found in any space port or colony with anything to trade. Their space ports are open, but restricted in access at the dock to simply trade. More of a drive-in market than a true space port for humans. This alien race is an Arthopod. Covered in a thick exoskeleton with six giant legs that end in sharpened points. Compressed scale sections make intermittent ridges like mountain ranges along its oblong body. At the front, the body sloped sharply upwards to create a flat sort of head section which held glistening black eyes and clicking serrated mandibles. In the front, they have two sets of vestigial arms that are used to lift small objects. They utilize machines and sentient robots more to operate heavy machinery and be their incredibly capable ship-hands. In fact, sentient robots of every shape and size span their ranks, some trustworthy enough to venture out of their territory into space.
Specific Alien race with defined historical ties, quite advanced technology, extensive economic wealth and unspecified ships leave design in the hands of the writer. Personality is up to you. Also allows option of sentient AI characters with ties to the Ferox
Spattered between arms within the more relaxed factions are sparse single-minded colonies scraping to get by. While able to govern themselves in whatever way they please, the technology they possess would be less advanced than even the standard level.
Another free-range character story that isn't specifically pirate.
On the other side of the galaxy, is an undocumented myriad of alien races which refuse to allow even scouting ships within their borders collectively. Any attempts at breaching what is known as the Exclusion Zone have resulted in a return of scrap metal. Anything within this field is completely unexplored and whether it is an incredibly advanced precursor-type race or a tightly-bonded group of aliens is entirely unknown. However, new alien races in space ports or on planets are not an uncommon sight. While curious and attracting to glares and hushed comments, they see relatively no harm and are left untouched. The lack of knowledge of their might or directives makes any prolonged interaction unilaterally frowned upon including even cursory scans of their ships. To protect against espionage and to verify that the ships are indeed alien, a coded phrase was developed in their tongue is the only true interaction a faction has had.
Free roam alien race, with whatever technology you please. Must be solemn and hesitant to interact. Similar to the isolationist DAEXR. Technology can range from not as to extremely advanced.
