Name: Daniel Martin Douglas
Gender: Male
Age: 37

Appearance:
When he first returned to town, he was trim and lean; as a boy, he'd been beefier and more mischievous. The prodigal son, however, had the hard look of a distance runner, which, as it turned out, he was enthusiastic about, as well as mountain biking. With dark hair and fairly ruddy skin, he's fleshed out a bit more from when he first returned, but not that much -- he has the look of the compulsively fit, which fits in with the 'oh, he must have gone to rehab' theory -- people assume that he replaced some sort of drug or alcohol addiction with a fitness addiction. When about town, he tends to dress in fairly toned-down stuff; usually a pair of jeans or a nice pair of slacks and some sort of buttoned-up shirt, sleeves always down, or a jacket.

Bio:
Born in Burlington, Vermont, the son of Arthur Douglas, a Democratic United States congressman from Aquitaine, Vermont who also owned Martin Sheet Metal, later converted into an HVAC parts producer, Daniel was sent to good schools; Philips-Exeter in New Hampshire and then to Amherst College for his freshman year -- he never quite adjusted to the idea that he was fobbed off on others to be raised because his parents were too busy. During this time, he was known as a bit of a hell-raiser; he liked to play rugby and with that culture came the hard partying. During the summer of his freshman year at Amherst, he was involved in a bad car accident with three others where there were some deaths; his father was running for US Senator at the time and did not appreciate the negative publicity to his campaign; while Daniel sustained some small injuries, one other was dead and the other two in the car were badly injured; it was determined that they were all drunk and that Daniel was the driver -- he didn't remember it.

The family argument that ensued was a bitter one, particularly given the peculiar stresses on the family at the time; his brother Jeffrey and his father compounded on the guilt Daniel felt by lecturing him and his reaction was angry. By the time the argument escalated, it became a series of ultimatums, with Daniel taking the money his brother arrogantly offered and fleeing the country; he disappeared from sight, and was assumed to be either dead or doing something that no one wanted to hear about.

His father lost the election for senate, but did not depart entirely from politics; in fact, he went back to the House of Representatives a couple years later and found his way onto the appropriations committee, where he was acknowledged to have generally done good work. In the meantime, Jeffrey opened a law practice and made an entry into Vermont politics also, though his success was limited; he was a smug man and more intolerant than his father -- there was also strain in the family regarding Daniel's exile. The black sheep son that disappeared was not heard from for nearly two decades.

In the intervening years, his father exited politics to run the family business, converting it from sheet metal to a more high tech HVAC concern, and it was considered highly profitable. His re-entry to politics came in the form of various political appointments that gave him considerable pull in Washington, notably in the Department of Commerce, where he served at the Undersecretarial level and seems destined for the Secretary position soon.

When Daniel returned nearly sixteen years later, he was different; he was lean and leathery, more guarded -- there was little left of an exuberant, rebellious, perhaps overcompensating young man that the town remembered. Instead, he was a quieter, more introspective guy that was comfortable in silences; he enrolled into the University of Vermont for some courses to continue his aborted education and patronized the local coffee shop. He reconciled with his parents, but not so much with his brother Jeffrey or his wife Jenn. It was assumed that he'd been an addict somewhere, particularly as the circumstances of his exile were juicy gossip material due to the mystery. He looked like something had changed, after all. Even more juicy was the way he took up with the Doctor Claudine Guilbeau which induced speculation about what would happen when Dr. Guilbeau went off to work with Medicins sans Frontieres (Doctors without Borders.) It was expected to be a 'over quickly' thing. To considerable surprise, Dan went along during the summer to Somalia with the doctor as 'support staff;' it wasn't common knowledge, but he spoke Arabic passably.

When the Soviet invasion hit, choices were made; his brother Jeffrey apparently made nice with the Soviet authorities, whose strategy of occupation was to generally leave the countryside alone while holding particular strategic assets and urban areas under more direct control. Dan's father was approached by Manuel Schultz, the son of Argentinian refugees fleeing the Guevara regime and a retired CIA general case officer in the Clandestine Services, who had a plan for building the American resistance -- former Secretary Douglas had the industrial and political experience to help spearhead the effort in Canada. Daniel left him with a couple numbers to call, including the French embassy in Ottawa, before they parted.

Surprisingly, Daniel quietly joined the resistance, opting to work with the stay-behind guerrillas that would carry the torch. Schultz expected the casualties to be high with these inexperienced, untrained teams, but Daniel wasn't swayed by that. He wanted to do it. Schultz, realizing that Daniel was hardly a prominent man about town that the enemy would suspect of guerrilla activity, signed off on the idea. He was a bit surprised when the son of his old friend filled him in on the general operational plan he had in mind -- it was solid.

For the moment, his cell have yet to do anything, though there are plans afoot. With no support structure in place, yet, they have to acquire their own equipment.

Psychological Profile:
Dan is calm, but he's also quiet. He doesn't seem overtly bothered with the way the locals do not entirely take him seriously, but most of the locals have only passing contact with him-- there is an expectation that he's a basket case, and those that know him up close after his return know that he is most certainly not. His favorite particular hangout is the Treehouse Cafe in Aquitaine, Vermont. At the prompting of Manuel Schultz, he is the primary recruiter for the resistance cell in this area. He does this very quietly and very carefully and is a good choice -- no one really suspects him of being the likely head of a resistance cell. The police, the ones that are actually working for the communists, which are very few in Aquitaine, don't really consider Dan at the top of the list, though his father went into hiding. The reputation for being a recently reformed ne'er to do well, apparently, has advantages.

When he was younger, he rebelled in obvious ways. Subsequent events have tempered that to a degree, but recent events have focused it; he never quite lost his taste for doing things differently than the status quo, and the overwhelming pressure to accept Soviet rule and move on with life has his back up. In any case, he isn't the sort to spraypaint anarchy symbols, he relishes the idea of outfoxing people and biding his time. And he also, in a lot of ways, wants the approval of his parents, which is probably a silly thing, but it is a silly thing a lot of people never really get over.

Skillset/Occupation:
  • Majoring psychology at the University of Vermont, at least until the Soviet Invasion; he withdrew from classes for the fall semester, as did a number of students.
  • Familiar enough with politics, having been raised with them.
  • Avid runner and mountain biker.
  • Speaks French, Spanish and, surprisingly, Arabic.

Equipment:
  • Mostly good hiking gear, sturdy pants and boots and the such. He did dig out some of the stuff from his family's place that he assembled into a field kit, though it is notoriously without weaponry, because his father was never an avid hunter, though much of Vermont is.
  • On the other hand, he has a Glock 19 that Schultz gave to him when he admitted he didn't have any firearms. It is a fairly concealable pistol, but it has heft. It is chambered in 9mm.

Relationships and Acquaintances:
WIP; locals probably know him, but maybe not very well; however, he's the one doing the recruitment for this cell, so he probably has had contact with everyone -- feel free to invent how that contact worked, but bear in mind that he wouldn't say anything about the parts in the spoiler without a seriously good reason.

Surprisingly, Dr. Guilbeau also joined the resistance.

Name: Joe Sullivan

Age: 41

Gender: Male

Ethnicity/Nationality: Irish-American

Physical Description: Joe is heavyset, but his height (6'1) helps him carry the weight. He's on the stout side leaning close to fat. His auburn hair has streaks of grey in it and he often wears it slicked back with gel of some sort. Joe has a thick beard that is also flecked with grey in it. His outfit of choice is often some sort of comfortable pants with elastic waist -- track suit pants or basketball shorts, etc. -- and a t-shirt or tanktop. He looks like a shady guy.

History:

Joe Sullivan was born in South Boston, the youngest of three children. His father, Danny, was an electrician and his mother, Irene, worked as a tollbooth worker on the Tobin Bridge. Danny and Connor, Joe's older brothers, were both model students and citizens in the community. Daniel became a prosecutor while Connor became a police officer. Joe, on the other hand, was the wildchild. He stole a car when he was thirteen and was sent to juvie. By the time he dropped out of high school at the age of fifteen, Joe had already been in and out of juvie three times.

Joe spent the rest of his teenage years as a petty burglar and strongarm robber. The few times he got caught, one of his brother's would call in a favor and he would either walk or get a light sentence. When he was eighteen, Joe took a job as a bouncer at a bar in Southie owned by Billy Boyle, the undisputed crimelord of Boston. Billy saw promise in the big, thick kid and took him under his wing. Joe went from bouncer to enforcer overnight. Billy started him off slowly at first, just roughing up guys who owed Billy money and the occasional bagman run through the city. Six months in, Billy gave Joe a gun and told him to kill a man who was threatening to go to the cops. Joe but two bullets into the would-be snitch's head that night and his place at Billy's right hand was cemented.

For over twenty years, Joe rode shotgun as Billy ran amok and built a criminal empire through New England. Joe developed a reputation as one of New England's most efficient hitmen. For some reason that nobody could ever explain, he got the nickname Joe the Jew. As Joe's criminal star rose, so did those of his brothers. Daniel became Suffolk County District Attorney before becoming a state senator, while Connor made rank to Superintendent, on the short list to one day become commissioner. In their three respective categories, the Sullivan Brothers were shining.

When the invasion came, Joe was in Vermont doing business for Billy. Joe was to meet their Canadian coke connection with a payment of twenty-five thousand dollars. The invasion threw the meeting to the backburner and Joe laid low in his hotel for a few days just watching and waiting to see what would happen. Eventually Joe was approached by some people who knew he had connections and knew he could help them. Realizing he could do his patriotic duty and maybe make a few bucks, Joe buried the cash for the drug deal and signed on with the resistance cell.

Psychological Profile:

While not loud and obnoxious, Joe is brash and to the point with most of his conversations. He is loyal, but only to a point. Years on the street have taught him that loyalty is a word that people will use to fuck you over. Joe is not a jingoistic patriot by any means, but a life time of Cold War propaganda and his own leanings as a "business" man has made him hate communism and the Russians who fight for it. A violent man, Joe is not afraid of violence and in some cases enjoys hurting people.

Skillset:

  • Proficient with weapons (handguns and shotguns mostly)
  • Career criminal with burglary and car theft skills.
  • Criminal and civilian connections throughout New England

Equipment:

  • Beretta M9
  • Duffel bag with $25,000 in it (Hidden)

Name: Benjamin Giguere
Nick: "Ben" or "Gigger"
Gender: Male
Age: 33

Appearance: Ben is not handsome. He stands 5' 9" tall and weighs 170 Lbs. His muscles are taut from years of working a farm or pounding spikes on the railroad. He has steel gray eyes and short brown hair which is usually dirty. His fingernails are normally black and/or filled with grease. Gigger normally wears blue dickies, solid colored T-shirts and Red Wing steel toed boots. He chews tobacco frequently and you might find traces of partially chewed tobacco in his chin stubble or drippings on his T-shirt.

Bio: Ben Giguere was born and raised in Bellows Falls, Vermont, not far from the Connecticut River. His father was an avid Red Sox fan and would take young Benjamin to the country store in North Walpole, New Hampshire just to get a glimpse of "Pudge", Carlton Fisk after his retirement from the White Sox in 1993.

Ben's father, Paul owned a farm in the hills south of Bellows Falls not far from the Railroad tracks and the river. Farming in Vermont is difficult; you go to work before the sun comes up and you finish long after the sun goes down. Paul Giguere was disciplined about the farm and kept at it all day long. When Ben was not in school, doing homework or sleeping, he was helping his old man on the farm.

Often times while out harrowing a field, bailing hay or harvesting field corn, Paul would tell his son that he should look into working for the Central Vermont Railroad which ran along the eastern edge of their property. Ben rarely took his father's suggestions seriously, but tended to his work regardless. When Ben graduated from Bellows Falls Union High School, he never looked back. He did play Defensive Back for The Terriers and outfield on the baseball team, but never good enough to go to College. Nor were his grades all that impressive; lucky to have all Cs.

He went to work for his father full time after school, but found being around dad all day to be irritating; cramping his style. He quietly drove down to the railroad office for the Green Mountain Railway located in North Walpole to inquire about employment. He was told they were not hiring, but that he should check with the New England Central in St. Albans, VT. He was given a phone number to call.

Following a two-week process, Ben hired onto the New England Central Railroad, formerly the Central Vermont in 2002. He took a job working as a Track Maintenance Technician. This meant he would have to inspect portions of the rail that ran from the Canadian border north of St. Albans, south to the Massachusetts border at Vernon, VT. He learned the job working with an experienced trackman. He and three other rode in the same "High railer" inspecting track and replacing 100-pound and 130-pound rail where it was needed. Every year they also engaged in replacing the large wooden ties, soaked in creosote. It was usually, the hottest day of the summer when they were working the tie job.

Paul Giguere and his sons Benjamin and Preston who was two years younger than Ben always looked forward to Deer hunting season in late November and early December. The nice thing about Vermont is they have a Rifle Season. Unfortunately, their Massachusetts neighbors to the south only have shotgun season. This tends to send a flock of clueless flatlanders north into the hills of Vermont to get lost. There were more than a few times when Ben and his father and brother would run across a flatlander winded somewhere west of Windsor Mountain searching for the way out of the woods. They would offer their assistance and help the godforsaken clueless bastards out, and then laugh at them behind their backs later on. It made for some funny stories.

His favorite hunting rifle was a Marlin .30-.30 lever action rifle. His dad used a Marlin 336C in .35 cal. Both rifles had 7x50 scopes mounted on them. His brother, Preston used a Remington .30-06 which also had a 7x50 scope mounted on it.

After the Russians invaded, things did not go well for Ben. His parents, Paul Giguere and wife Lauren were killed from an automobile accident on Interstate 91. The death of his parents devastated Ben. He viewed the Russian invasion with hatred. Although, the invasion did not directly cause his parent's death, it did facilitate it. With the presence of Russians in Bellows Falls, Ben took to the hills in search of a group he heard about one day at work. He put together his standard hunting kit along with a few extra supplies. He also took his 31 year old brother, Preston with him.

Psychological Profile: Ben never cared for politics, as was his attitude toward school in general. He focused on his work and his hobbies. He enjoyed working, whether it be farming or track maintenance and he loved hunting. Ben's father, Paul was firm while raising his two sons, but fair. He was never too hard on them, but didn't let them slide by either. He made them work for everything they achieved and this has shown through in their personalities. Both boys are quiet and polite. They are hard to rattle.

Ben really doesn't have an opinion of the current situation other than he knows the Soviet invasion is bad. He would like to help return Vermont and the US back to the way it used to be. He is willing to fight to bring back the USA.

Name: Ainsley Evans
Age: 31
Gender: Female
Ethnicity/Nationality: Caucasian
Physical Description:

Feminine and fit, blessed/cursed with a pretty face of dark features topped with long, straight, black hair. Though in her early 30s, it's not hard to mistake Ainsley for a younger woman. If you listen close enough, or long enough, you can hear the hints of a Texas accent.

Skillset:

• From a childhood spent hunting and camping, Ainsley can handle herself relatively well with a pistol in the woods.
• Having recently finished her residency in General Surgery at a Boston area hospital, Ainsley is a fully certified and trained medical doctor.

History:

Ainsley Evans regrets not taking a lower paying position in the Houston Medical Center. She'd be closer to family during the trauma and emergency of invasion, and more than anything, she would have avoided the drama that has enveloped her in Burlington, Vermont. But it was the hospital in Burlington that offered her by far the most, and so she took it, loving the idea of Vermont in the Spring and Fall. Back when her biggest non-occupational concerns were a cabin in the woods, and a giant cup of coffee.

Of course, the Commies would have to complicate her life. Everyone's lives.

The life of a General Surgeon at the UVM Medical Center in Burlington was a busy one before the invasion; rare was the open weekend Ainsley had to explore the beauty of her new home state. Mostly she worked, and she slept, before waking up at the sound of her OnPage app going bonkers to tell her it was time to start the next work day. When she could she went out with a few nurse friends to concerts, to restaurants, bars, whatever Burlington had that called itself the nightlife for the city.

Born and raised in the suburbs of Dallas, Texas, Burlington wasn't exactly what she thought of when she thought of big city--but it's what she had. She could still do the camping, and hunting, and fishing she grew up with. It's just at this point in life, she was busier working and trying to survive not the wilds of Vermont but the wild adult dating scene she found herself in. She'd been dating a cop named Scott when the invasion came in truth. Their two month anniversary was the last time she'd ever see him.

Being the Doctor turned girlfriend of a cop that got himself killed with the initial wave of Communists made Ainsley a popular choice for Burlington PD cops that weren't happy with the current state of things, beginning a chain of events that would eventually lead to Ainsley being noticed by the Resistance. After about a year of patching up Resistance aligned folk in secret, and helping to provide pharmaceutical resources. In her little off time, Ainsley now cared little for night life and dating scenes: she spent her free time in the woods, shooting, practicing.

She even bought a large EMT pack, and spent months customizing both the pack and it's contents to fit the needs of a "country doctor" that made house calls in combat zones. That was her plan, at least, to eventually disappear from UVM's Medical Center in Burlington. Somehow some of the Burlington PD boys that she never really knew that well, and one she did know fairly well, had gotten promoted out of turning their loyalty to Communist masters, started asking about her to the other doctors and nurses of her hospital.

She never really got nervous. Not until Derek Gordon, her long gone boyfriend's partner and once a friend of her's, showed up at her condo one day and demanded she come with him. On the way he laid it out: he couldn't prove it, but he knew she was helping the local people resisting the Commies. He didn't need to prove it, though, to tear her world apart. He could help her, though, if she was willing to stop being stubborn and naive. If she was willing to stop helping anyone under the table, and go out with him.

The last bit burned the worst. Derek had always been sweet to her, but she figured always figured it was due to his partner. It wasn't until she realized he'd wanted her, too, that she started to wonder if Derek had something to do with Scott's disappearance.

Now she sits uncuffed in a locked Burlington PD Interrogation Room, wanting only two things: to get out so she can fully join the Resistance, and to kill Derek Parks.

Psychological Profile:

Raised with God, guns, and the glory of America. The daughter of an engineer and a school teacher, Ainsley grew up in the thinking man's Bible Belt: as such she isn't exactly a radical or fanatic on any political level...although she is patriotic. After a decade of Med School and residency, there are times when the Doctor's God Complex comes out in Ainsley. When she feels as if she knows better, even if most those around her disagree. Usually it contains itself to the medical field, as she likes to keep her worst traits in check the best she can. Usually. She cares for others, and is typically pleasant natured and positive...with a heavy side dose of sarcasm.

Equipment:

• All weather hiking boots, jeans, various undershirts/shirts/sweaters topped with a black biker jacket with hooded sweatshirt underneath.
• Sig Sauer P238 (.380)
• Modified field medic pack.

Name: Jane Donovan
Age: 32
Gender: Female
Ethnicity/Nationality: Canadian-American
Physical Description:
Jane is approximately 5'6, and weighs in at about 130 lbs. Her curly, light brown hair has natural highlights, and it falls a few inches just below her shoulders. Blessed with hazel eyes and full lips, her medium-dark skin tone further accentuates her features.

Skillset:

  • Drawing/design
  • Somewhat of a book worm
  • Really good with directions
  • Knows some basic self-defense

History:
Jane was born and raised in Vancouver, British Columbia to an engineer father and a nurse mother. She is an only child, and despite missing out on the sibling experience, she considers her childhood to have gone extremely well. In school, she was immediately drawn to the arts. Jane found she had a natural talent for drawing and she would practice just about every chance she got. Her parents were extremely supportive of their daughter and would often encourage her to join an art club or maybe go out more and meet people with similar interests and talents, but Jane didn't necessarily take their advice to heart; she preferred the quiet, private lifestyle she had known so well throughout the years. When Jane was in her senior year of high school, she received a scholarship to the School of Visual Arts in New York, and once the time came, she left home for the first time.

During her second year of schooling in New York, Jane became a tattoo apprentice at a shop near her school. Within a matter of months, she was promised a permanent, full-time position provided she completed additional training to gain a better understanding of the industry. It was then Jane made school her second priority, and her schedule switched to part-time classes which allowed her more time at the shop. While her parents were supportive of her decision, they nonetheless reminded her of the importance of school, the same old speech Jane always received. She promised them that she'd stay in school, and she kept her promise. By the time she graduated, she was one of NYC's favorite new tattoo artists, and her clientele only grew the more publicity she received.

Fast forward nearly a decade later when Jane's life came to a complete halt. The invasion wreaked havoc on her life, as was the case for just about everyone else. Being that she didn't have any family in the states, Jane's immediate goal was to make her way back to Canada one way or another, but that proved harder than she'd imagined. She knew she wouldn't last long, and as she made her way north, she eventually joined one of the smaller resistance cells. Everything was going as well as one could expect if the country you're living in has been invaded, but that changed when the group got to Vermont. Just about everyone within that resistance cell was killed or gravely wounded, and unfortunately, Jane wasn't spared. She's clinging on for dear life and even though she believes she could recover, time isn't on her side as troops could easily close in on her location.

Psychological Profile:
Jane is not a woman of many words. While she's not anti-social by any means and can get along with just about any social circle, she prefers to listen rather than contribute to a conversation. Given her non-confrontational nature, Jane will avoid fights or unnecessary arguments and instead, she'll attempt to resolve the issue in a civilized matter. Since the invasion, however, Jane's attitude has shifted slightly to better suit her surroundings. She's much more outspoken whenever she believes she's right, and her patience tends to run short quite often.

Equipment:

  • Glock 43
  • Backpack with canned goods, water, and a blanket
  • A small radio
