The Mess Hall, 11:30 am, Day 1

All of the buses of campers had arrived, and all of the campers had been corralled into the Mess Hall for lunch and a welcome to the camp. Lilac, head counselor, stood at the front of the room. She stepped up onto a chair to get the attention of other campers, though the added height only put her at about the same height as many of the campers sitting down. Holly was used to this, however, as a Fae, and knew how to work around her small height.

"Good afternoon, everyone," She said brightly, easily drawing the attention of most students with her natural Fae charisma, "And welcome to Shadow Falls' 200th annual summer camp!"

She paused, and a few campers clapped halfheartedly. Determined not to let the lack of enthusiasm deter her, she carried on. "
For all of you who are returning, welcome back! For those of you who are new and don't know, my name is Lilac Honeybell, and I'm head counselor here. We have a great year planned for you guys! First, enjoy lunch at your own leisure, and then please stop by this table," she gestured to the plastic one by the door where the rest of the counselors sat, "to get your schedules and cabin assignments. We will also be providing a personal copy of camp rules for everyone in the hopes that it will prevent some of you from letting them slip your mind." She gave a few returning campers a look. "We hope you all have a great summer, and if anyone has any questions, a counselor would be glad to answer it. We're recognizable by our purple lanyards," She gestured to the one around her neck, "And don't forget to have fun!"

Her speech finished, she stepped down from her chair. The lull of conversation started up again as she went to help the camp chefs with setting up the lunch buffet.

Tempest had made herself comfortable at a table tucked in the back corner of the mess hall. She had sat here for the past three years, making small talk with whatever cabin mates she had that year but never really becoming close with anyone. She listened to Lilac give her yearly speech and sat back to wait for the food line to die down before she got up to get lunch.

She pulled her sketchbook out of her bag and flipped it open, turning to a fresh page and tapping her pencil thoughtfully against her cheek as she tried to determine what to draw. She had one earbud in, so she could focus on something other than the lull of conversation that made her head hurt, and had one of her favorite bands turned up loud enough that someone sitting close enough could probably make out the words.

She was less than thrilled to be back here. Her past few summers had been fine and all, but she always felt like she was missing out on the adventures had by her friends back home. She was sixteen this year and could finally drive on her own, yet her mom sent her back to this camp. She didn't like being hidden away in the woods when she should be staying out all night, watching horror movies in her pajamas with her best friend, and living the life she dreamed about. She felt like she was finally old enough to have real adventures, but her mom seemed to disagree.

She sighed to herself and pushed the thought aside, settling on some lithe little Fae girl to sketch.

Keegan settled himself in the seat next to some girl in the mess hall. It was the only seat available. He plopped his lunch tray down and started to dig into his burger. He seemed to not be paying attention to anyone, which could've made more than a fair share of people annoyed but he didn't care. He licked tomato sauce off of his thumb and returned to wolfing down his fries like he hadn't eaten in weeks.

He would've died (well he already did that) for a blood milkshake but eh, you couldn't have everything. As he wiped off the last of the hamburger grease on a cafeteria napkin Keegan turned and looked at the girl.

"Well, hello." He better make friends here. Smart ones, who could get him through whatever he needed. And could get him a blood milkshake.

@ineffable

Tempest glanced at the kid who had decided to sit next to her. She noted the way that he ate like he hadn't eaten in weeks. She looked back at her sketchbook and continued her work until she heard him say hello.

"Hi." She said back shortly.

She continued to sketch and hoped that would be the end of the conversation, though she knew better. It wasn't that she didn't want to talk to him, or that she was trying to be rude, she was just in a very bad mood at that particular moment and didn't want to get all upset over something she'd be fine with if she wasn't feeling particularly nasty.
