Griffin's life had never been an easy one. His sixteenth birthday was no different except that things went from bad to worse. At five am his father came into his room and pulled him out of his bed. He slowly climbed to his feet. He was used to his father's abuse. It had been happening since his mother's death when he was six. It was a fact he had learned to accept. "I see you go you mark." His father growled.

Griffin looked down on his chest. There it was. Right over his heart. The mark looked like a book. His father took advantage of his distraction. Because he was noe six foot six and taller than his father the older man had to get the upper hand when he could. His father hit him with the belt. Griffin reacted out of instinct. He curled up into a ball to protect himself as much as he could.

Complicated. That was the right word, when it came to describing Amy's life. Her father, worked for the Navy, being re-stationed every once in a few months...sometimes a year or two. Amy couldn't get used to one single place, as her home. Once she got to see, different places. It was also irritating, as she lost a few friends, any time she moved. Not to mention, never having a proper mother figure in her life. Her mom, died when Amy was really young. After her dad re-married. Things seemed to go down hill. Her step mother, didn't seem to care about her at all...often complaining due to Amy's social awkwardness and issues.

The pair did not get on. Amy tried to like her...of course she did. Mostly for her father's sake. But it was just not happening.

It was a slow, afternoon in the book shop where Amy was working. Books, she loved books. To read, to feel drawn into another world. It always calmed her down. She felt a slight tingling against her skin...Walking to one part of the shop, there was a small bathroom used by the staff. She lifted up her shirt to inspect herself. Amy blinked in surprise, when she saw a mark on her chest. It resembled a book. But it seemed to be source of the tingling and slight discomfort she was feeling.

Then suddenly, out of nowhere. Amy flinched. It was as if someone had lashed her with a belt...she looked a little panicked. Wondering, where the sudden, unexpected source of pain came from. Her heart raced inside of her chest, beating rapidly. The discomfort and pain written over her features. But she also felt confused.

The beating continued until Griffin passed out. Once he was unconscious his father stormed out of his room locking the door behind him. Several hours passed before Griffin regain consciousness. He pulled himself to his feet slowly. Pain filled his body but he pushed it aside. He would deal with it later. He was sixteen old enough to drop out of school and get a job. He slowly made his way to the bathroom where he showered and shaved.

Once he was feeling somewhat human he pack a few things. He took only what he could carry. It had taken him years to figure out how to escape. He picked the lock and silently made his way out of the house. He moved slowly and cautiously. He knew that if he was caught he would never see the light of day again. Luckily his father seemed to have left. He knew he needed transportation so he made his way downtown where he hoped to find a way out of town. He had to get out of town before his father started looking for him.

The rush of the pain, continued for quite a bit. Amy closed her eyes tightly, trying to suppress the pain. When it was slowly leaving, she tried to forget what had happened. But how could she? The feeling of someone else's pain, was not something she could forget easily. But, if she were to get through the rest of her day...she would have to. She couldn't let, it take over her mind. Not, when she had things to do.

The rest of her day, was quite ordinary. After she finished, her shift at work. Amy went home, as usual. Her dog, Pepper greeted her with the usual enthusiasm. Jumping, tail wagging, playful barks and licks on the cheek.

Her life at home, it was unpredictable. One day, she get through her day fine. The next, she had to listen to her step mothers harsh words, and take a few slaps, hair tugs. Amy never said a word, to her father about it. It's not like he cared to listen. He always believed, his wife...even though, Amy never done anything wrong. Her step mother hated her, with a pure passion.

That particular day, her step-mother was in one of her moods. So Amy done the best to avoid her. She done her house chores, which consisted of cleaning the kitchen after lunch and dinner, tying her room and her own bathroom. Other than that, she spent her time with her dog Pepper. Pepper brought her the only joy, in life she needed. After a walk with Pepper, through the park...she studied a little bit for school. Before she and Pepper fell asleep, curled up on her bed.

Griffin limped down the street. No one paid him any attention. He stuck to the shadows as much as he could. Eventually he made it to downtown. He had no money so a ticket out of town was out of the question. While he didn't like the idea of stealing he saw no other choice. It would take to long to get out of the city by foot. He had to reach the city limits by dark or he might never make it out of town.

He waited until he found a house that looked like the owners were well enough off to replace the bike but didn't have cameras. He hot wired the car. It was a skill he had picked up from his father's men without them knowing he was watching them. Luckily it was as easy as he thought it would be. But then again he had always been good with his hands.

He stuck to the alleys and backroads. Unfortunately he didn't know the city well and it took longer than he would have liked but eventually he reached the city limits sign. He breathed a sigh of relief. But he had no intention of stopping until he needed gas or grew to tired to drive safely.
