FOLK: people who are rooted to one place, who would rather tell stories than live them.

VAGRANT: a drifter and wanderer, pirate and adventurer. Loyal to no king and bound by no law, so long as they keep moving.

COTERIE: a crew, a gang, a cult of Vagrants who travel and trespass together. Usually led and recruited by a Captain.

LEGEND: a Vagrant or a Coterie which has been immortalized in folklore and ballads. Universally revered or feared.

WHISTLEHOWL: The brightest star of the Shambler's Dragon constellation -- and the oldest and deepest Legend of all.

This is the story of the greatest legend that was ever known: the journey of those peculiar vagrants and their impossible search for a star.

Following the hyperfantasy worlds and deliciously simple plot hooks of One Piece and HunterxHunter, here is yet another story of an intrepid young dreamer with a MacGuffin to find and a misfit crew to gather along the way.

As is the nature of the MacGuffin, the Whistlehowl Star isn't important and may not even exist. It's the journey we're here for.

The world doesn't have a name, or has many names depending on where you happen to be standing. This is the sort of place where people get around on flying whale-buses, where forests are lit up at night by peculiar mushrooms, where vast treasures are guarded by riddling monsters. You never know when you'll be snatched up by a passing griffin or robbed by a posse of masked children.

The only constant is the Vagrants, whose reputation precedes them. There are those who call themselves wandering healers, traveling spiritworkers, pirates and raiders and mercenaries, explorers of the farthest reaches -- but they're Vagrants all the same. By law there is no law that governs the Vagrants, as long as they don't spend more than three days in one place -- at which time the resident king has every right to arrest them or charge them taxes for loitering.

The technology level here varies widely from place to place -- from the tribes of the desert to the ticking cities among the hills -- but nothing is more advanced than the Fallfair Clock which towers over the city of the same name.

Her parents both live peacefully on a little island where they lead a simple fishers’ life, netting the skies for the fish that leap through the clouds. They're content with their folky life, unlike their daughter; Sunny surrounds herself instead with people she deems good at heart and adventurous, people she could trust without hesitation.

Sunny was born on the sky-island of Luvailmaer to a family that fished the sky for a living -- their cottage will always be home to her, but her addiction to adventure is too strong to stay. She makes a new little home wherever she happens to be, and she depends upon others' kindness for comfort.

WHERE DO THEY GO WHEN THEY'RE ANGRY?
In the throes of rage, Sunny will seek out a high place to scream -- the higher and more precarious the better.

WHAT IS THEIR BIGGEST FEAR? WHO HAVE THEY TOLD ABOUT IT? WHO WOULD THEY NEVER TELL?
She’s afraid of the ocean -- the idea of being surrounded by water with no way to breathe is an unfamiliar and frightening concept. There is no one she wouldn't tell her fears, she doesn't mind if it's known.

DO THEY HAVE A SECRET?
Sunny was entrusted with a secret by a visiting Vagrant named Coyote, and is sworn to never tell a soul.

WHAT MAKES THEM LAUGH OUT LOUD?
Almost anything has the potential to make her giggle, but especially slapstick humor and bad puns.

HAVE THEY EVER BEEN IN LOVE?
Sunny has never been in love, and doesn't care to be. It’s just not her thing.

DESCRIBE THE THINGS THAT WOULD BE HARD FOR THEM TO PART WITH.
Grandmother's astrolabe has its own leather pouch that Sunny had sewn herself; it's strapped to her back at all times, never to leave her person. It's made of white brass and is artfully designed. Coyote's earring dangles from her left ear; it's in the shape of a tiny pewter dragon.

Simple sandals laced with twine and rough soles when it’s warm – in cold weather, secondhand boots and socks as thick as they come.

Baking honeycakes, which her father would always make on cold dreary mornings, to be devoured under a blanket with a warm mug of spiced milk.

Her grandmother would tell her the stories of the constellations, and how they point the way no matter where you are. She taught Sunny how to use the astrolabe, which she hasn't parted with since. Grandmother was a Vagrant who settled on Luvailmaer, and had rich histories to tell.

Sunny's life ambition is to find the Whistlehowl Star, discover its secrets, and most of all to become an even greater Legend than the star had ever been.

I disappeared for a couple months and abandoned a few things, but now am back with a fresh perspective. I thought I'd try a new approach on a fresh slate.

Sunny Skyward will be a central and constant character; it will be her role to gather the PCs around her, to motivate them and drive them forward, but not to overshadow them.

I'd like to begin by basing a plot on one PC at a time -- RP through arriving at the PC's home or wherever they happen to be at this moment, befriending them, solving a small adventure and taking them along on the journey to the next PC. This means that not everyone will get to post right away, but I think the character development and plot investment might be worth it. We can discuss options further in OOC.

Three long claw marks that have yet to fade run along her back. They're from a griffin she wasn't fully prepared to deal with.

FRIENDS AND FAMILY, PEOPLE THEY SURROUND THEMSELVES WITH?
She used to wander with her mother, her only living relative. That was until she was ripped apart by the very same Griffin who attacked both her and her group. Now she wanders alone. She prefers to be around people who are intelligent and have a quick wit. Aro also values humor in a person, even though her kind of joke isn't exactly the cleanest.

WHERE WERE THEY BORN? WHERE HAVE THEY LIVED SINCE THEN? WHERE IS HOME?
Aro was born in a small unnamed grove but hasn't seen it since the day she was carried away in her mother's arms. She doesn't remember the place, she only remembers her mother's stories of it. Aro is a Vagrant, she lives on the road. To someone who wanders, home is where they are. They don't have a special building or a special place, to them, especially to her, home is where the heart is.

WHERE DO THEY GO WHEN THEY'RE ANGRY?
When upset, Aro used to run into her mother's arms. Now, without her, she has nowhere to go but inside of herself. When she's angry she traps herself in her thoughts, not paying attention to the world around her. That is until something knocks her out of her mind. Then she will focus her unbridled rage and the thing that took her out of the one place she considers safe.

WHAT IS THEIR BIGGEST FEAR? WHO HAVE THEY TOLD ABOUT IT? WHO WOULD THEY NEVER TELL?
Aro's biggest fear is being abandoned. Having someone that has stayed with you through thick and thin suddenly leave you for something they consider better is something that will always make her feel pathetic and weak. She hates even the idea of being left behind. The only person she's ever told about her fear was her mother and a few of her fellow travelers, who are all now dead. Aro is the kind of person to open up to anyone who asks, so it's not really much of a secret that she's afraid of such a silly sounding thing as being abandoned.

DO THEY HAVE A SECRET?
Aro's secret is that she was the real reason her group got attacked. She was the watch for the night and should've easily spotted the monster that killed her mother. But she was distracted, something that the group would shame her for. Aro didn't notice the Griffin until it was already upon them, ripping her friends and family apart. She ran as fast as she could, the monster only catching her once before she made it into cover. Ever since, Aro has felt like she doesn't deserve to be near anyone, for she would only get them killed. She keeps this secret buried, and hasn't let it breathe since the day it happened.

WHAT MAKES THEM LAUGH OUT LOUD?
Aro enjoys a kind of slapstick humor, and if anyone falls down or hurts themselves in a ridiculous way, she's bound to laugh.

HAVE THEY EVER BEEN IN LOVE?
Once, but they too fell victim to the Griffin that has scarred her in more ways than one.

DESCRIBE THE THINGS THAT WOULD BE HARD FOR THEM TO PART WITH.
Aro takes personal gifts very seriously and will put up a fight for them if they're taken. She has two gifts, a necklace given to her by her mother, and a scarf which was hand-made by the leader of their group's mother.

Fawn brown shoes covering small, pale, dirty feet. She prefers walking barefoot, so if she doesn't think she needs to, she won't wear shoes.

Aro really never had a kitchen, but her group had always gathered around a fire to share stories while some sort of red meat was being cooked. To her, dirt and cooking meat are the smells of home.

Aro had seen first hand what the Griffin had done to her mother, and has never been able to remove the thought from her mind.

Aro wants to be love without fear that they will one day die. She wants to feel that it's alright to care and that she won't be the reason that her loved ones will perish.

RIGHT NOW, IN THE FIRST MOMENT OF OUR STORY, WHAT IS THEIR BIGGEST PROBLEM?
Lost in an angry thought, Aro wasn't paying enough attention to her surroundings. She is now stuck, hanging upside down with her feet tied from a rope hanging from a rather large tree. Her pack is on the ground, along with any sharp objects she could use to free herself. At this moment, Aro is waiting for whatever set the trap to arrive and kill her. That is unless she finds a way to free herself from the trap.

Edric & Balsaam, the treasure hunters

Balsaam

NAME: Edric Van Nergan
HAIR COLOR: Ash grey.
EYE COLOR: brown
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES: Edric's frizzy hair is tied back in a ponytail. His worn duster coat and sword at his hip easily identify him as a vagrant. At first glance Balsaam could be mistaken for a raven or crow, but upon closer inspection he....isn't.

SCARS AND BIRTHMARKS: Edric's hands and forearms are criss-crossed with scars. He bears the brand of a horned boar of the back of his right shoulder. A patch around Balsaam's tibias are bare.

WHO ARE THEIR FRIENDS AND FAMILY? WHAT SORT OF PEOPLE DO THEY SURROUND THEMSELVES WITH?
Edric lost his father, aunt and little brother when the slavers came, and knows not whether they live. Until he met Balsaam, he had no one. The pair might not be family, but they're partners and that's good enough. The pair aren't ones for making fast friends, but they're always in taverns and bars hunting for scoops.

WHERE WERE THEY BORN? WHERE HAVE THEY LIVED SINCE THEN? WHERE IS HOME?
Home for Edric was once the Cliffside town of Rosetta, known for its sunsets and beautiful gardens. It was razed by slavers, which started Edric's life on the road. He eventually found himself part of the collection of a wealthy merchant alongside Balsaam. The two mounted a daring escape together and have been travelling side by side on the road ever since.

WHERE DO THEY GO WHEN THEY'RE ANGRY?
For a walk, probably to look for something to hit whilst having a long rant at Balsaam. The easily offended bird tends to fly off and disappear for a while when he's in a mood.

WHAT IS THEIR BIGGEST FEAR? WHO HAVE THEY TOLD ABOUT IT? WHO WOULD THEY NEVER TELL?
The pair are constantly digging and teasing at each other and will do so over anything. One topic is off limits however: cages.

DO THEY HAVE A SECRET?
Balsaam has never asked Edric about what the scars on his hands mean. Edric has never commented on the fact that its odd for a bird to be able to talk. It suits them both just fine.

WHAT MAKES THEM LAUGH OUT LOUD?
The pair tend to keep each others spirits up, though there is a certain amount of one upmanship and laughing at the misfortune of the other.

HAVE THEY EVER BEEN IN LOVE?
Edric has no time to spare for thoughts of love. Balsaam's lecturing would indicate he has some thoughts on the matter.

DESCRIBE THE THINGS THAT WOULD BE HARD FOR THEM TO PART WITH.
Each other. The pair have become dependant since escaping their slavery. Edric also seems generally attached to his possessions. Something has to be really falling apart before he'll consider replacing it instead of repairing it.

The iron tips of his dusty boots. They're comfy but worn. They could probably do with a new sole soon, too.

The scent of burning wood, baking, savoury pies and pudding. Edric's father was terrible with food, so his aunt cooked for him and his brother. These memories of home are what drive him to keep seeking it out.

Edric's father teaching him to spar in the halls of their home. Those same halls burning, the night the slavers attacked. Being unable to protect himself or his family as his neighbours were cut down, and being locked in a cage in the back of a wagon, forced to watch his disintegrating home fade away into the distance.

WHAT DO THEY WANT MOST OF ALL?
Edric journeys to find out became of his townsfolk and to take revenge on the ones who enslaved him. Balsaam wants nothing more than for Edric to find something that will make the troubled young man happy.

The money has dried up. The two have had a string of chasing groundless rumours and empty, long-plundered tombs, but Edric's spent the last of the cash on a tip about a ruin supposedly containing a strange treasure that's a sure thing!

As briefly mentioned at the very bottom of the OOC, I'm attempting sort of a different approach here. At this moment I'm working with Tenma on a collaborative first post, in which Sunny and Laphicet will meet and begin the first leg of the journey. After that, the plan is to properly meet each PC one at a time, conduct a small adventure, and fold them into the group to move on to the next PC and the next adventure.

The upside of this would be that everyone will get a chance to properly and thoroughly introduce their character in a small adventure dedicated to them. The downside is that many will have to sit out until it's your turn. Also as we add more players, each adventure will probably take longer to complete.

However! There may be a way to speed things up a bit. Nyte and Aro are both stuck in the woods -- for our purposes, these could be the same woods. Edric's ruin could be not far off. We could potentially run a couple plotlines intersecting one another.

I still very much want to properly give individual attention to each PC's introduction and current plight. The plan is to go in order of when the character sheets were approved, to post when you're called upon.

Let me know your ideas and preferences! And totally feel free to use the OOC however you like, for whatever you like!

WHO ARE THEIR FRIENDS AND FAMILY? WHAT SORT OF PEOPLE DO THEY SURROUND THEMSELVES WITH? Arlo's father was a wiseman, his mother a carpenter. He was an only child, and his parents died of a fever many years ago. Arlo likes being around anyone who is friendly and

WHERE WERE THEY BORN? WHERE HAVE THEY LIVED SINCE THEN? WHERE IS HOME? Arlo was born in a small settlement on a lake tucked away in an obscure nook of the world. He lived there until his parents sent him off to apprentice to an aged wizard. His parents died while he was away, and he ended the apprenticeship to put their affairs in order. When that was done, he began wandering and has done so ever since.

WHERE DO THEY GO WHEN THEY'RE ANGRY? Someplace with lots of trees and no people.

WHAT IS THEIR BIGGEST FEAR? WHO HAVE THEY TOLD ABOUT IT? WHO WOULD THEY NEVER TELL? Arlo has two related fears: one is that he will never be able to develop control of his wizardly abilities and wind up dying, alone, on the road. The other is that his "focused personality" (see SECRET) is not a symptom of the concoction he drinks to control his magic, but a very real part of himself that could take control at any time. He's never told anyone about either of these things, and currently he can't see a situation where he would.

DO THEY HAVE A SECRET? Arlo's secret is that he could be a powerful wizard – if he was willing to pay the cost. Arlo struggled through his apprenticeship because he simply wasn't very good at magic. Appropriate power level was his issue: he'd be unable to start a fire in the fireplace one day, and instantly melt a candle trying to light it the next. His master brewed up a potion that helped him control this, but it had the unfortunate side effect of turning him into a cold and ruthless person, lacking in empathy and eager to acquire power. The duration of this effect is unpredictable, but it's always too long. Arlo did some unkind things while under this influence, and he refuses to use the concoction - although he carries some with him, as he can't quite bring himself to get rid of it.

WHAT MAKES THEM LAUGH OUT LOUD? Many things. Good jokes, bad jokes, clever turns of phrase, a lucky roll of the dice, the vagaries of the universe…

HAVE THEY EVER BEEN IN LOVE? No.

DESCRIBE THE THINGS THAT WOULD BE HARD FOR THEM TO PART WITH. 1. His boots (see below). 2. The Sunwhistle. This is a coppery-colored penny whistle that has been in Arlo's family for generations. The problem is that his father died before explaining to him what it does and how it works. Arlo knows it to be magical, but he's never been able to get anything out of it except clear, pleasant musical tones.

LOOK DOWN AT THEIR FEET. DESCRIBE WHAT YOU SEE. A pair of knee-high boots made from some unknown animal's hide. They are tough, insulated, and waterproof, and made from a patchwork of pieces in various brown shades. They lace and button up the outside. His mother gave them to him as a going-away present when he embarked on his apprenticeship.

WHEN THEY THINK OF THEIR CHILDHOOD KITCHEN, WHAT SMELL DO THEY ASSOCIATE WITH IT? WHY DOES IT RESONATE? The smell of bread baking. Arlo's an indifferent cook, but he knows how to bake, and has many pleasant memories of baking with his father.

DESCRIBE ONE STRONG MEMORY THAT HAS STUCK WITH THEM FROM CHILDHOOD. The first time Arlo's father started a campfire using magic. It's a bittersweet memory, because while it's a fond memory of Arlo's family, it's also a reminder of his own shortcomings.

WHAT DO THEY WANT MOST OF ALL? To make a difference… somehow. Arlo's spent much of his adult life trying to find a way to control his magic, or failing that, to contribute to something larger than himself. He's not been successful at either so far.

RIGHT NOW, IN THE FIRST MOMENT OF OUR STORY, WHAT IS THEIR BIGGEST PROBLEM? In yet another attempt to work his magic and be part of a successful endeavor, Arlo hired himself out to a group of fairies who have a magic door on one of their tress that's stuck. The problem is that Arlo can't figure out how to unstick it, and the fairies are not allowing him to leave until he does.

Since losing his antlers and becoming trapped in his current, fluffy body, he has surrounded himself with "foolish, easily manipulated fodder for the Ascendant Ghoul King"; which is to say, anyone that can tolerate his ridiculous posturing.

WHERE WERE THEY BORN? WHERE HAVE THEY LIVED SINCE THEN? WHERE IS HOME?
Ashorn Rattlebones was born to Meatgrind and Stitchgristle Rattlebones, low level advisors to the Ghoul King of the Bonelands and ruler of all Ghoulkind. From a young age, Ashorn was clever and ambitious, but, his terminal lack of subtlety and tendency to loudly declare his plans made him something of a joke. Eventually, Ashorn realized exactly how his kin felt and decided to leave the Bonelands to better himself.

Unfortunately, Ashorn ran afowl of a powerful witch who stole his antlers and transformed him into a stuffed bear. He adopted the name "Kisses" to prove exactly how well he was taking the change. He swears he's adapting and will be back to being Ashorn in no time. Honest!

WHERE DO THEY GO WHEN THEY'RE ANGRY?
Kisses goes to the nearest reflective surface and tries to practice looking intimidating.

The truth is, Kisses is starting to get the impression that, between his cuddly and adorable body and the non-ghouls he has been spending time with, he's goin soft. He refuses to admit this to anyone, as he wants to present his current form as nothing more than a minor setback in his quest to become the Ghoul King.
