Yeaaah, it also depends on how the writer presents their character's inner suffering. They could take an outside viewpoint and make it look funny or they could go on what their characters are feeling and experiencing, their thoughts and just downright make it a gruesome brutal depressing experience.

A:"Let me take the full fro..*breathes heavily*..frontal damage of the beast!"
*Goes in front and opens his/her arms*
B:"No need! YOU get behind me, I will gladly lay down my life in the front line while being ravaged by the beast, giving my comrades a chance to escape!"
*Gets in front of person A*
C:"STAND BACK EVERYONE! I GOT THIS!" *Gets in front of everyone and starts removing their armor equipment*
*A, B and C all start arguing on who will be the meat shield*
D:"Guys, no need to argue. Come on, we are a team...so just let me get in front an-"
A,B and C:"SHUT UP!"
