METAGAME

The Roleplay will be about a secret chatroom on the internet only accessible to those talented in hacking. All kinds of anonymous hackers congregate here to discuss about hacking, form alliances, or sell and buy "services". There are a total of 16 chatrooms (Chatroom_0 to Chatroom_15) but this role play will take place mainly in Chatroom_3. Each chat room has a keeper that takes care and manages the channel to prevent leakage of information. The origin of the Hacker's Chatroom is a mystery.

RPers post in the form of chat logs, hacking behaviors (for example if you hack into a bank there will be codes; you don’t need to understand programming, just be creative), and a bit of actions in roleplay characters’ life.

The role play is set in a universe very similar to ours.
World events tie loosely to real world events.
The date is Sunday, 24th December 2017 (GMT) and it is Christmas Eve.

THE CHATROOM

---

The Secret Net was an open-sourced software designed for traceless communications between criminals and people intending to keep their identities anonymous. Just like many other open-sourced codes before it, its origin was largely a mystery with its creator unknown. The Secret Net did not catch the public eye, until five years ago when a notorious group of seventeen hackers calling themselves "The Keepers" decided to alter the software's source code and designed it in a way that they have full control on the traffic of the Secret Net. The new software then became a popular social platform among hackers well-known for its impenetrable security, and hence the origin of what you know today as the Hackers' Chatroom.

The main server of the Hackers' Chatroom does not occupy a specific physical location. In fact, every user device acts as a server to the chatroom upon first connection, making it near impossible to DDoS or shut down as long as any one of the users are still connected to it. Depending on individual chatroom keepers, some may host the channel's database in a well-maintained server room for additional security measures. Each keeper has a unique way of defending and managing their own channels.

1. The Keepers
The infamous hacker group consists of 17 team members each skilled in executing different types of hacks. Throughout the last decade, large-scale hacks have been performed by the group, inflicting widespread financial damage to the world. Nobody knows their exact identity, and what is the organization's ultimate intentions. The Keepers are the main managers of the 16 channels of the Hackers' Chatroom.

2. Hackers
Those who are talented enough to hack and access the secret net are mostly welcomed to mingle in the chatroom as long as they follow the keepers' rules. Hackers often befriend, chat and share about their hacking experiences with each other, forming a sense of bond within the hacker community.

3. Criminals
Non-hacker criminals may access the net through special means approved by the keepers. They make use of the chatroom to contact with clients that are looking for their special services, or collude with other criminals in performing illegal activities.

4. Clients
Through a cleverly designed security system, clients may be granted temporary restricted access to the Hackers' Chatroom to buy all kinds of services from other criminals.

5. Others
Sometimes secret agents, lost birds, and people who might cause trouble to the chat room may gain access to the platform. The keepers do not welcome this sort of people and will ban their IP address immediately upon exposure.

BASELINE RULES:

5. Make sure your nickname in discord is your CS Username. You can change it by right-clicking your name on the bar tn the right and click "Change Nickname".

POST LIMIT:

The minimum for posts is three paragraphs once per week. The minimum for Discord activity is once per week.

SO WHAT'S THE DEAL WITH THE DISCORD?

The Discord is an extension of the RP. The RP itself is somewhat Slice of Life, and it is still an RP, so you need to be posting IC on the Guild. Try to make your IC activity match your Discord activity. If your character is unable to access the hacker.chatroom IC, don't post in the Discord until they are able. You can post OOC as frequently as you like, but Discord IC should match Guild IC.

SO WHAT IS THE WORLD/STORY LIKE?

Early game we are letting people do whatever they want in terms of story. It's a modern day open-world "write your own adventure" sandbox, where you'll have freedom to do what you want. Since we're hackers, you can be located anywhere in the world. Over time, the GM and I will be working in story elements, most likely in #bulletinboard or #public posts. They'll be a bit like optional missions, so if you aren't sure what to do, you can go to them and move the story forward. You can ignore them, or you can launch straight into them.

HACKING 101

The essence about programming is to understand that machines are brainless, and all you are doing when you code is you are ordering it to perform precise tasks for you. There are countless programming languages out there, but the logic is always the same. Here are some simple steps on how to code a program (note the coding terms are not real, I made it more intuitive):

1. Define your goal
Lets say you want to program your robot to move from point A to point B which is 100 meters away, then you have to break down the goal into more objective and precise actions: move the robot forward for 100 meters.

2. Step by step
Every single command needs to be written down. In the previous case, the pseudo-code can look like the following:

3. Group repetitive actions into functions
As you can see, actions can get too repetitive. In coding, you may define functions and loop them. Lets call the function "Walk", and we input "stepsLeft" into the function. The indentation is used to indicate that the coding lines are grouped under the same function.

What the code did there was first it defined a function named "Walk" with the input variable named "stepsLeft". Depending on the steps you input, the robot will walk for that exact amount of steps. Then finally, it calls out the function "Walk(100)" which means the robot will walk for 100 exact steps forward. You can also loop the actions without defining a function:

4. Let your robot make binary decisions
Sometimes a decision cannot be made on the point of writing the software. This calls for decision making by the robot. For example, the distance of point B is undefined. The robot needs to sense whether it has reached the location every time before it makes the next step. Do note that robots can only make binary decisions (Things that are true or false):

5. Be precise
Just remember that every single command needs to be precise and not ambiguous. For example, "walk for a long distance" is not precise enough as the word long is really subjective; "walk for 100 steps" is a better choice.

6. Be consistent and organized
Organize your codes with proper indentations, punctuation, and spaces. Be consistent with the word choices you are using. If you use the term "loop" to repeat your robot's actions, don't change it into words like "repeat" or "again" in the same program. Be consistent with how you organize the code as well.

7. Comments
Sometimes there is a need to put comments in your code so that you (or others) understand what each section of the program means at first glance. Here is one way to do it:

Comments are invisible to the robot upon execution. They are purely there for clarification purposes to the human programmer.

8. Use your creativity

The beauty of programming is there are always more than one solution to a problem. So use your creativity! As long as it gets the job done, it is a good code. In a role play, if you are creative enough, you may even express your character's personality through your codes. No single hacker approaches a single problem from the same perspective.

Gunther wears mono-colored t-shirts that are either blank of have a large design on the front and baggy blue jeans with white sneakers. When he's out, he wears a large blue longshoreman jacket with a hood if it's cold and a black baseball cap and black-tinted sunglasses if it's sunny. His holster (see Devices) is clipped to a black two-latch leather belt. He tries to maintain a casual, careless appearance that suggests he is still a college student.

At home, he has a (heavily modified) Getac X500 connected to an external hard drive and hardwired to a server in his second bedroom, along with any other devices. On the move, he has two PDAs. One is a handheld computer, with an encrypted signal and a few hand-made programs that can break into PCs and smartphones, access and disable security cameras and networks, freeze up or shut down computers, and a few other things. The other is a bit different. He carries it in a holster clipped to his belt tucked inside his pants at his back. He has never used it, but it is always loaded.

Occupation: Freelance hacker. Works mostly from home.

Cyberskills: Backdoors, encryption and decryption, small-scale infiltration.

Personality: Solitary and content. No personal connections with family or friends. Loves challenging himself and constantly tries to learn new things, including making his own computer parts and conducting "field work."

Background: Gunther is a full-blooded German, born and raised in Munich. He was an intelligent, ambitious boy who had maybe two friends that didn't last past high school. He was never a star student, with zero athletic or artistic interest, but he was above average in all subjects. He majored in computer science in college and developed a deep interest in it. Socially, Gunther was unsuccessful in friendship and romance, and subsequently lost interest, choosing to focus on school. His Germanic blood gave him a desire to challenge himself, and he drove himself to become an expert in the field. His field of study expanded to include robotics and even genetic engineering. Three years in, he expanded his field into less honest computer work and discovered that he could make a living by challenging his skills on his own terms and time. He finished his degree at 23 years of age, earning a Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering, and moved to America, leaving family and memories behind. He ended up in Virginia and took up residence in a modern apartment building (two bedroom flat) where he got to work. Currently 29, he has been in the hacking business for a solid seven years.

Gunther found the Hackers.chatroom just by wondering if such a thing existed. Besides the chat room, he has in the past taken more interest in "field work" and has tried scoping out places and trailing people to hack them on the move, but it's far more dangerous and you can make just as much of a profit by staying home. He owns a separate apartment in the same complex, under a different name with false ID, which he uses mostly as a decoy, including a dummy laptop with encrypted files that contain no information and a server connected to a dead network. He visits it occasionally to make sure everything is running, clean it and throw away junk mail.

Gunther currently runs his own small business as a freelancer and, on occasion, fixer. Most of the work comes from finding secure information, moving money, and shutting down competition, and he works only in cash and bitcoin. As for his standard of life, he eats healthy food, jogs in the morning, and is teaching himself krav maga. He shares his apartment with Zero, his German Shepherd, who acts as his companion and security system. After all, no amount of cyber security can top a well-trained dog.

The Goddess
I saw her there, on that ruin of Yemen. Her eyes were red and her breath was short. Her chest behind the soft and dark cloth reveals her magnificent beauty. Her long black hair wove me into these dark desires that I know God shall not forgive. Her eyes filled with hatred as each time I took a closer step near her. She was the good and I am the bad.

And then, we dance.

For a moment, we walked in a circle of intimacy. Her gaze pierced my soul with thousand of invisible blades. If my goddess is yelling at me for laying my disgusting eyes on the beautiful creation of God. Then I would gladly pull my out eyes out of my tiny brain. The goosebumps appeared under my armor as she was passing her judgment. The chill from the air makes the chain of the monster inside me to lose as I stared directly at that crafted face. The pebbles fall down with each of her graceful steps carefully placed on the rocky surface. Her pants covered her ankle, but I can imagine her white and soft feet under that rough and thick cloth. And together, we dance in the circle. The howling wind soon becomes the conductor of ours great duets. Pebbles and concrete become our playground. Dead victims become our spectators, only acts as a decoration to her already beauty face. The long dark hair, green eyes, soft and delicate lips, white teeth, long and thin eyebrows hypnotized me. And the full moon on our head witnesses our testimony.

But she ran.

And then I chased her. On two. Then four. Paws touch the ground. Accidentally losing balanced and slamming into the dead things that lied on the asphalt. But I quickly regain my balanced and chased after her as fast as I could. Couldn't she understand my love? I wondered to myself as I quickly close our distances. I could hear her panting, short but filled with this dandelions smell. Her sweat was like pearls, decorating on her yellow skin forehead. We ran in this endless maze, ruined of Yemen. She hoped to escape this fool that lay eyes on her. But I wished she would be mine.

And it seems like God want us to be together. In her eyes, I am probably nothing more than a devil that wear the skin of man. That I am the worst of the worst, the thing that pig excreted after their meals. No matter what she thinks, it pained me. For to me, she was shining the new light on the horizon that lay in front of us. But it was nothing to her beauty, which seems to increase with each breath that she takes from. The sound of the nearby collapsing building could not shift my attention from the panting that came from her cherry lips.

Precious was her flesh. Warm was her body. Soft her sound. Sorrow was her crying. And how beautiful it is for her to smile when she died. Even with her discarded body, the goddess still looks so innocent in her sleep. If she could be on our side, then I surely would fell in love with her. And I tasted her all, with the flesh that came from her. The blood I drank without sharing to the crow or the dead nearby. It seems like even after death, she still cares for this fool like me. Even hate, she still sacrifices her flesh for my mouth to taste such delicate and beautiful meal.

The next day, I return to my comrades and just said that everyone had died in that mission. And no one asked a word about what happened during those moments. Only a few reports had to be filled, a few more rebellions need to be killed, a few more targets need to be hunted. And none of them could fill the emptiness in my heart.

Return home
I return home in Point Barrow, Alaska and have almost nothing in my pockets. An old abandoned mines, frozen roads, desperately needed to repair the house, and a bunch of stuff that I myself care none. I feel useless. This burning desire inside me doesn't stop. Nights and nights with different women make no improvement. They were ugly, pigs wearing the human skins. Their snorts and screams had nothing like her. Drive with their most basics form of desire, these beasts understand no concept of beauty. Disgusting they are. They are nothing like her, not even like a strand of her hair. Her eyes still fill my mind in my sleep. Her screaming noise of despair is my anecdote. Her dandelion smell is my filled the atmosphere of every corner that I lay my eyes upon. Each night, my dream keeps relapsing of what could be.

During my time, I join and acted as a right hand for the Russian Mafia. They offered me illegal vodka and stuff that I could not remember. I worked there for a few years, making the Head treat me almost like a younger brother and give me many legal money. In return, I kill some and oppressed his family members and those that dared to go against him. I worked there for a few years, before being replaced by another younger guy. He was brought by the Head's Wife and pretty young. So before getting fired, I talked to my Head about their affairs. Before leaving, the boss handed me his laptops along with the rights to form a new trade of organs delivery with the Chinese. I give the Head's blood brother my power in controlling the gang, in return to promise to deliver the corpse that I kill. The price is small but the profit is huge. So the problem is not about worrying that would the Head betrayed me, but whether are there enough for me to kill. And it seems the cops are suspecting me so I am planning to hide for a moment.

I had finally made it to the Russian. Staying in the Far East right now. I also had used the invitation card of the Head to logged into an impressive site called as Hackers. Chatroom. And I am planning to get a job as it seems by bones are crackling with the stupid weather of Russian. Hope that I could shift my killing from killing stupid teens who drink too much into real victims.

Background:
Aria grew up most of her life in southern California, when she was 14 her family moved to a small town in Nevada and she had a tough time meeting new people since she had always spent time in her room playing video games or watching Youtube. She eventually met a girl named Carey who shared similar interests as her almost a year later. Carey was part of the tech team at their school and was admin on the computers. She let Aria on the tech team but at the time Aria had no real computer skills besides having been a gamer, so Carey taught her how to write programs and test for back doors as well as crack passwords so she could test the school's security. Aria became intrigued and at the age of 15 studied the hell out of hacking until she was fluent. She wanted to find a way to use the skill to make the world a better place. She decided on an alias, Sia, based off the Goddess of knowledge in Egyptian mythos, and became a Grey hat hacker nearly a year ago. Since then she has untied some of the knots in presidential lies and leaked the information. When she realized she couldn't maintain her computers, and pay the WiFi bill, she picked up a second job and started accepting hacking jobs online.
