From a few worlds, thousands were built.

But that was a long, long time ago.

In the current era, we are far less fortunate.

Four centuries ago, the whole system was ran by immaterial authorities who kept cosmic order over the network of worlds. They ran the whole solar system for centuries, but were discontent. The immaterials wanted total conformity. Their mad rush for universal conformity led to the shattering. The immaterials simply vanished, which led to absolute chaos and a perfect, incoherrent storm of disasters immediately afterwardAfter the decades of chaos, all that was left was the material realm.

What saved civilization from collapsing into total extinction was the resilience of the micro worlds built in the previous centuries. In these micro worlds, a vast store of smaller local societies developed under the metaphorical noses of the immaterials. Spaceship production began again and a new, more materialistic era had dawned.

The overall body of innovation which civilization saw under immaterial rule remains out of reach simply due to a lack of wealth for the shattered societies to even consider the excesses which the immaterials or the creators of the micro-worlds enjoyed.

The micro worlds are unlike the natural planets or moons. The micro worlds are hospitable to life and contain their own internal ecosystems, climate and terrain, all designed by various groups over the ages with very different world views from each other. The empires which have arisen since had to conquer natives whenever they tried to take any of these worlds for their own colonial ends (which in current times, has proven cheaper than building a new world from ground up).

Said micro-worlds are incredibly diverse, coming in every shape and size within the laws of physics. Some worlds are floating cities in the void, others have their origins as artificial habitats, while others are solely built to be a self-sufficient ecosystem. The local custodian AIs and solar energy panels within many of these worlds would prove to be critical to their survival in the shattering and in maintaining the biospheres they hold within themselves. And it is these very worlds which the current age has centered itself on.

What happens next, of course, is up to the societies which have arisen in the past four centuries.

Guidelines

1. Technology
-No FTL systems.
-Do not give yourself the industrial complex to make a micro-world within a century.
-AI should avoid being super human in terms of intelligence, all such super human AIs are dead.
-Avoid setting breaking technology (like say, a means to blow up the sun, infinite free energy or a invincibility barrier)

2. Biology
-No life from outside the solar system.
-Please be creative with your intelligent life, don't go for the obvious.

3. Worlds
-You may not use black holes as a gravity system.
-While habitats are internal, i'd prefer them to be mostly within 2 AU of the sun (or within the asteroid belt).
-Worlds of a size bigger than 150 km in length or are more than 50 km in radius are major worlds.
-Everyone should be based in this one star system.

So we are talking about basically any civilizations of reasonably humanoid or artificial creatures, living in high-tech artificial worlds floating around in space? What level of civilization do you have in mind specifically - modern, medieval, some postapocalyptic Mad Max-like thing or it is just up to us?
The worlds are self-repairing or do they need some maintenance from their inhabitants? That would be pretty hard to do for some of the more primitive nations.

Yes, this is the case. Genetically altered / organic or completely synthetic life living within artificial worlds.

As for the tech level, it's pretty open here and up to you. I expect it to very rather diverse due to each world being its own little world.

The worlds are by default self-repairing due to the custodians. The custodians and their nature is up to you as well, as only the localized custodians survived the shattering to begin with. It is assumed world maintenance is a common task for them even if how the custodians behave or how they interact with others is incredibly, incredibly varied.

As major worlds are contested, is it common for several habitat-based factions to have a presence on their surfaces, or otherwise some stake in their fate (like with Cutis's historical importance)?

By any means, I shall get to work on a sheet as soon as possible, though progress might be a little slow for a few days yet.

The Concord seems to be balanced and very thought out, accepted since it's complete enough.

I like how different our approaches are. I made a surreal society while you did a more sci-fi one. Will be interesting to see how future potential players approach this.

Anyhow, it will be interesting how the Domain will deal with such peculiar society. Much harder to infiltrate for the humanoid formless, that much is certain. I would expect for the hallucinogenics to spread into the Domain though.

@Arawak Allright, I am trying to work on something now :)
Just a physics sidenote, you say that the Splinters are "used to lower gravity environments" yet originate from "dense cigar shaped world which rotates incredibly rapidly". That does not make much sense, because more rotation = more gravity. So if the world would be rotating super fast, the gravity there would be much stronger than on other worlds. The stations in scifi movies (ie in Elysium) are usually shaped like toroid to some point - if they would stop rotating, there would be 0 gravity. If they would rotate too fast, everything living on them would be crushed.

Looks good to me with just a question on the interstellar travel part- is this just a goal of theirs or have they actually done it?

I did go for something that fully embraced the rebuilding theme. Eventually, the Concord might yet evolve into something different, but for the moment it is still very much in the consolidating phase.

Transcendentals could be a good guise for Shapeless infiltrators to take. Some of them are humanoid, though still clearly synthetic, and one acting strangely is nothing out of the norm. The downside is that they are not very influential, and as a cover might only be useful to gather information. Still, it's something that could be interesting to see in action.

@Arawak I was thinking they are close to having some usable prototypes of ships that could jump short to nearby systems, since they have already occupied all of the worlds in their original system.

Traveling to other stars you can spend the money on if you want, but the no FTL policy makes it way harder than it normally would be. Everyone's meant to be within this single star system.

When you refer to system do you mean like a regional world cluster?

@Arawak System = solar system, like a system around a single star or something similar. I assume all our nations have developed ability to travel withing their systems, otherwise they wouldnt be able to control multiple worlds.
And I know you said no FTL, but having absolutely no option to leave the original system makes no sense, how else would our nations eventually interact?

Everyone orbits the same sun within a dyson swarm of artificial worlds. So interplanetary travel is all you really need.

IC is open for posting.

The time system used here is manually updated, usually based on how events are flowing. With time updates comes orbit updates as well once I get the universe sandbox map set up which will be today. It is only meant to represent orbits. If there is any specific traits you want, feel free to notify me on that.

@Arawak Well that kinda changes things :D I did assume that the worlds were in different systems, since it wouldnt make much sense to build hundreds of worlds in just one solar system. But OK, I will change it accordingly.
