Over a thousand students attend Breckenridge High School, a rough school in an even rougher town. Separated into five forms of curriculum, students are given one label, based on their academic performances, which dictates what that student can and can't do within the school: AP, Honors, Regular, Special, and Remedial. AP, short for Advanced Placement, is for the smartest, most gifted of the population; it can be argued that AP students don't even quite belong in high school. Honors is just short of them. Regular students are the largest. Special is for those who can't keep up, often because of mental disorders or other disabilities. And Remedial is for those who don't care about their grades, struggle for reasons not connected to a particular disorder, or are juvenile delinquents who might not even graduate at all before being thrown into jail.
It's mid-December; students are excited about the approach of the winter break, Christmas, and the New Year. Midterms are nearing completion, make-up tests are being scribbled on, projects presented and turned in.
But one afternoon, on December 17th, just before school is about to dismiss and students released to savor the two-week-long break from their studies, a strange, unknown voice announces through the intercom in place of the normal afternoon announcements, "From here on out, students will be separated based on their status within the school. AP students are a collective. Honor students are a collective. And so on and so forth. Each week, a new objective will be presented. Whichever group manages to complete that objective first will be given the best of the supplies, as well as a bonus. Two more groups, upon finishing the objective, will also be granted supplies, but not as much and without the time bonus. The last two groups, however, will have to find an alternate means of lasting through the week until the next objective."
