I actually went to MtG locals today.

It was a little more uneventful then I would have imagined.

I've bought the little 2014 Deck Builders toolkit thing (so like... 200 commons basically) and have thrown in like 4 boosters not including the ones it came with. I'm trying not to buy singles right now. I like the idea of trying to make a deck out of the tools I have. And I don't want to netdeck or anything of the sort. I did however buy four Gruul Guildgate's because they were an obvious thing that I needed to help my little hodgepodge of a deck.

I think that once I actually get a decent deck together that I like I'll look at adding singles to improve it.

But yeah! First time actually playing with actual cards. It was neat.

It actually was a tourny. Just a small free thing tho. Three rounds. I forfeited a match because I was late.

It wasn't anything excruciating like the time you had. The only painful thing would have been the slight awkwardness in the air. People weren't very outgoing towards the solo guy who showed up out of the blue.

Sounds like you are doing a decent start. As a starter I suggest green/red or Green/white... They are relatively simple to play in comparison to blues and blacks

I have a black/white douchebag vampirism deck (not actual vampires, just tons of effects that steal life from the enemy to give it to me), consistently stomped the shit out of all the decks my friends and brothers had. Then I brought it to a tournament that it was legal in and I got my ass handed to me. Managed to win against one guy who seemed to be rocking an intro deck for the newest set with no modifications, but everyone else made me their bitch. I never did another non-standard tournament.

My deck was Red/Green. I had the most multicolored cards for it and both colors are pretty straightforward. The shop plays Standard. I would like to play Modern so I could use the 2013 cards that I've grown to love from the video game I played, but alas that is not the case. And in Modern there are a lot more opportunities to face off against a broken-powerful deck, so it's not too bad. New is good.

The deck is largely built from Orzhov cards from the original Ravnica block, which is when I first really got into playing Magic. Extort would definitely fit right into it.

I'd get back into it if I had the money to buy cards, but I don't, so nope.

That actually sounds like a decent way to start in all honesty...also, note that you'll always meet a powerful deck or a broken one, but yes Standard does tone it down to a fairly good level. Still though I love modern for the fairly wide variety that it holds...
