Hey, anyone interested in a bit of SPESS piracy?

Though I guess space pirate might be a bit incorrect. the players will be crew of their very own ship, free to plunder or whatever else they might want to do.
This'll be very sandboxy in that regard.
So, any takers?

I do love the general idea. Do you have any sort of specifics at all?

I like to start out vague, since I don't wanna risk an idea I'd lovingly crafted for weeks bombing because nobody cares.

Anything you'd like?
Although I can say that there probably won't be aliens.

So it's basically a ship RP? I'll try it, but my muse has been suffering lately.

It's a deleted cutscene from Metroid Prime 3. I found it on the Metroid wiki and thought it was really cool, so it ended up in my signature. I've been trying to find the whole thing with sound and everything, but I've not had any luck so far.

Okay, we have interest. Now, does anyone have any preferences about anything? I'm pretty accommodating as long as there's no 'dual katana guy in a trench-coat' type characters.

Also, Google chrome seems to think katana isn't a word.

I'm thinking of drawing inspiration from Metroid, in all honesty, and using a setup similar to your typical Pirate Trooper from Metroid Prime. That would be a plasma wristgun thing and a wrist-mounted energy lance.

Energy weapons are a bit high tier, I'm thinking of starting you off with Slug throwers. Also, now might be a good time to elect a captain, as my duty is strictly NPCs.

I like my space pirates closer to Firefly than Metroid. Red Dwarf, maybe?

Anyway, my character would probably be from a planet with lesser technology.

Well, you have to remember that Metroid has Space Pirates refer to a certain species, which is the Zebesians. They're technically not even pirates, and Other M actually shied away from calling them Space Pirates. That's when them being called Zebesians began.

Anyway, plasma is not technically energy, since you're launching matter. However, I don't think all energy weapons should be off-limits to begin with, because energy weaponry is not necessary overly complex and expensive to make. For example, a Gauss rifle would be a very cheap and very common energy weapon. Railguns are a bit more expensive and rare, but are still going to be fairly cheap and common in any futuristic setting. I'd say Gauss railguns would be where the boundaries begin to get pushed a little, since they'd not be all too common compared to railguns and Gauss rifles.

And I thought we were all doing our own ships.

I love that Silver Carrot just referenced Red Dwarf. That show is brilliant, hence he must be as well.

I also love space pirates, whether one ship or not, though I prefer a crew all of PCs. And as long as nothing is going in be as instantly fatal as space already is, I am open to the variables.

I also love Red Dwarf. Kriton (not sure how to spell his name) is my favorite character!

Well, I said 'their' own ship. Sorry, it is a group thing. And I'm afraid that energy weapon is very high end. Thing is, energy weapons in this setting are quite large, more akin to cannons. For instance the smallest energy weapon is the Gungnir Laser Destroyer, which is roughly the size of an M60. I'm thinking more of a grimy kind of Sci-fi, more industrial, less 'Ipod.' As for railguns, they aren't man-portable. In fact, Browning M2s are still in use! Sometimes, you can't beat the classics.

You, uh, do realize Gauss rifles are real and already as powerful as your typical airgun, right? Yeah, they're a bit awkward when effective in combat, but most of it is the barrel and magnets. Gauss guns work using electromagnetism to propel a bullet at very high speeds, depending on the number of coils you have. The barrel has wire coiled around it to create electromagnetism (hence why they're also called coilguns), and the more coils you have, the more powerful the gun.

Here's an actual fully automatic Gauss gun in action. This guy also explains the science behind it much better than I have.

If you really, really don't want us to use "energy weapons", then there's still a way to allow us to use Gauss guns to start with and not have us using energy weapons. The gun only uses electricity and electromagnetism to propel a projectile, but doesn't actually shoot energy at a target. The actual damage still comes from a projectile. It's only considered an energy weapon because it uses electricity as a power source.

While they would be awkward to use when practical in combat today, I'd imagine that with this RP being set in the far future, they'd completely replace firearms as the standard. Yeah, the M2 would be used as you said, but most would go with a coilgun over a firearm since there's far, far less risk of explosion and the fact that, by this time, they'd also be far more powerful.
